El Gallo Giro in Canoga Park is the real deal. Tucked into a small shopping center near the Wienerschnitzel, parking can get tight during a busy lunch rush, but don't let that discourage you -- it's absolutely worth it. Inside you're greeted by welcoming employees and a bright, organized space split into distinct sections -- a taco counter, and a bakery section that smells absolutely incredible. We didn't get to try the pan dulce this visit but the display case was packed with colorful, freshly baked goods that had us planning our return before we even sat down. We ordered a mix of street tacos -- chicken, carnitas, pastor, carne asada, and chorizo -- and every single one was made to order right on the grill with good, fresh tortillas, topped with onions and cilantro the way street tacos should be. Plenty of lemon wedges on the side let you pump up the flavor exactly the way you like it. The pickled carrots, salsa verde, and salsa roja rounded everything out perfectly. The rice was a solid side, though the beans were a bit of a letdown -- not much flavor compared to everything else on the plate. The value here is still outstanding. Four tacos with rice, beans, and a drink for $14 is hard to beat. We upgraded to the horchata for a $3 upcharge and it was well worth it -- perfectly sweet, not overly so, and ice cold. This is the kind of neighborhood spot that deserves a packed house every day. We'll definitely be back -- and next time we're hitting that bakery. read more

I had no idea that this place had so much to offer!! Everything is fresh.. made daily and sweet bread are made my portion to make sure they sale them and when they do, they make a new fresh batch! Now I know where to go for my fresh sweet bread. Las aguas frescas are so good!!! They make whatever fruit is in season. Delicious!! If you have not tried this place, I recommend you come by and just take a look! You will not leave empty handed....... Everything is so clean and organized. The staff are so nice and welcoming. Absolutely love the cafe de olla. I don't usually drink black coffee but I drink their coffee black. It would be a sin to add milk to the cafe de olla, at least in my opinion. It is so good. 3 stars pretty much describes all the Gallo Giro locations. Hit or miss. I feel fell victim of growing too fast too quickly. In the early 2k's almost all their locations were consistent with yummy Carnitas tacos and Torta Cubana(grilled meats sandwich), and their Aguas Frescas(fruit based drinks). They would literally have about 4-5 different kinds. Now.... Very inconsistent, very mid. Carnitas always taste like they have been sitting in the warming tray for hours. This location however still turning out Torta Cubanas that majority of the time taste yummy. Torta Cubana is pretty much my only go-to. Comes with grilled ham, breaded steak, avocado taste like magic. It will take out of a pickle, just be warmed if you dont get fresh food. read more

I came in here with high hopes because my mother in law highly recommended El Gallo Giro. Ive tried their aguas frescos before when my boyfriend has brought them home. But today I walked in to order a torta to go to take to work for my lunch and i was so underwhelmed. There were so many workers around and when i leaned over to ask a question regarding the menu no one even reacted to pay attention or point me towards someone who could help me. I ordered the menudo and I will definitely be going back. The menudo is sitting in a heater pan but if you know about menudo, it takes hours to make this soup. The meat has the perfect texture and it compliments the broth of the soup. The broth and rich and delicious and I had to stop myself from finishing the bowl. They provide onion, cilantro, and tortilla with your order. I had to order a buillio on the side cuz I've always grown eating menudo that way and it was worth it. The buillio is delicious and crispy all around even though it wasn't fresh ! I enjoyed the combination with buillio instead of the tortilla. The ambience is everything you would expect. This location is a lot smaller than the ones I've visited in the SF Valley. There's plenty of parking which is amazing anywhere in LA. The staff is friendly and they have a laid back ambiance going on. We walked in looking for traditional Mexican breakfast and found just that. My mom had the menudo which she said was very flavorful and not too spicy. I had the breakfast super torta, which was just the right amount of savory I needed. We also tried the breakfast burrito, which was supposed to be custom but they forgot to remove the tomato and onion, that's why I knocked off a star. Everything was fresh and tasted great. The champurrado was authentic and we could really taste the masa and the chocolate. The agua fracas also tasted home made and not like the powdery stuff so many other restaurants use. If you're looking for a quick Mexican breakfast I would def give this spot a try. read more

Been coming here for years, since I was a kid! I rarely come now as an adult since there aren't any nearby where I live. I always order a Torta de asada with the salsa on the side. And it just never disappoints! The bread is always crispy and the asada is cooked well & full of flavor. The red salsa is actually spicy which is a plus. I also make sure to order a horchata, this is one of my favorites around town! The service is great, I've never had any bad experiences. The restaurant is decorated with brightly colored Papel Picado decor. The tables could be cleaned more regularly, as there were a lot of crumbs everywhere. The price is also pretty high for a Torta & horchata. Plenty of parking available since this is located in a shopping complex. read more
