It was New Years Day and they were open! That was a plus and the only reason why they're getting a rating of 2 stars, otherwise I would've given them 1 star!! However they sat my best friend and I at a dirty table, like really dirty and we had to have them come clean it off. They took forever to come and even give us water. We ordered our food and the guy working at the front brought my best friend someone else's food. The guy working at the front was totally out of it and should not have been at work. We asked him to bring my friend some hot salsa and after he walked around the restaurant, he went and stood against the wall at the front podium and I had to get up out of my seat and walk to the front and ask him again to get the salsa and even then he didn't get it, he had the girl waitress get it. We also asked him for a refill on our water since we were never checked on once we got our food and he did the same thing as he did when we asked for the salsa and I had to get up again and ask for more water for a second time. The girl waitress apologized for the way the guy was acting and I asked her what his problem was, she then told me that he was way too hungover. ‼TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE‼ Needless to say, we will not be coming back here again. The BOMB!!! I have to say first the service was amazing. Second, the food is delicious. I ordered the taco salad and when he brought it to me it was beautiful. I quickly destroyed it before I remembered to take a picture. Oh well... the waiter brought me this green salsa and it went perfectly with my salad. My husband ordered the flautas and he was not disappointed. Drinks galore and great layout, didn't seem crowded or small at all. Very large menu and did I say excellent service!! read more

I have had awesome experiences here And also had one time that wasn't great.. Normally it's great the guy knows me cause I go to the hookah bar next door (genie hookah) but this last time I was in I got a blue moon and asked for a Glass and when I poured the bar into it I noticed that the glass had stuff floating in it. The lady working didn't comp me the beer just said it had to have come from the beer. Which can't be true cause it's a glass bottle from a factory and I have had many blue moons and never had anything wrong with the beer. Also they didn't wait on me too well. Stuff took a long time. Forgot about my water. I will only come back if the guy is working he is always friendly and on top of everything :-) read more

El Guajillo may have an outdated building, and an interior that needs major renovations and updating, but you won't be disappointed coming here. Although they lack some updates, they are far ahead in authentic Mexican cuisine and service. The food was amazing, and probably in my top 3 Mexican restaurants in Portland right now in my book. I had a beef chimi and chicken enchilada with black beans and rice. The beef in the chimi was superbly seasoned, and they also added poblano peppers to add some extra pop. The chicken enchi was also terrific, and made with creamy authentic queso and cotija cheese. The only thing I would improve was the black beans, which was served more as a bean soup than a nice thick side of beans how I usually like them, but still tasty. The service here was extraordinary! I was served water, chips, and salsa immediately. I was tended to every couple minutes for more water and salsa for the chips. The waitress also gave me additional salsas to try and said that she makes them all fresh in-house and has about 7 different salsas. My check came with a tasty little chip with cinnamon, whip cream, and caramel drizzled over it. Very good! I'll definitely be back soon. read more

So Hubby & I decided to take the grandkids out to dinner got there around 6:30 hardly anyone there, we were seated promptly but then nothing it took forever to get menus & no water was offered or given, we waited & waited then for someone to take our order by this time several more parties has come in & been seated. We finally order & we ask for water & drinks & more chips (we ended up asking for more chips agin before dinner because it was so ssslllloooowwww). We notice that one party that had arrived after us was already eating & were like Hello where is ours) no one came over no one acknowledged us nothing. Finally when dinner did arrive yeah wasn't impressed & then my grand daughters was like 10minutes after everyone's else's, & then I had to go ask for it. So we will not eat here again! Oh man, this place is just bad. Just don't do it!! Was brought chips and salsa, then offered guacamole. Kinda felt like we were being upsold. That was the first mistake. $3.50 for 2 tablespoons of guacamole!! And it was terrible, from a package for sure! My husband asked for roasted jalapeños on the side, and they brought him the jalapeño nacho slices. Completely different. I ordered a chile relleno and chicken chimichanga combo plate. My husband ordered a chimichanga and tamale. Every single mexican restaurant that I have been to serves a chimichanga with a scoop of sour cream, and guacamole. The server asked us if we wanted sour cream and guacamole. I said just all sour cream, no guacamole. (Assuming I would get 2 scoops of sour cream) and my husband said he didn't want either. When the food came out, my husband had one scoop of sour cream and I had nothing. Fine, he just scooped it over to my plate. And they charged us $1.25 for that one scoop of sour cream!!! The chimichanga was okay. Nothing special by any means. My chile relleno was so tough. I could hardly cut it! No flavor either! And there was a layer of Pico de Gallo in between the pepper and cheese melted on top. Just gross!! $32.65 for a terrible meal, and even more terrible experience. Wish we wouldn't have strayed from going to taco del sol for tacos!! And it would have been less than half the price of this joint. read more

Simply the best Mexican food yet in the PDX metro area. Everything is prepared fresh to order so it's a bit slow coming to the table. The tortillas used were fresh and homemade. It's amazing the difference that one ingredient makes in the overall quality of the meal. I had a shrimp fajita burrito that I'll be dreaming about until I return. We also had chicken tacquitos which is a dish we use to compare restaurants. Both 5 star. Highly recommend this sleepy mom and pop restaurant in Tigard. read more

We have been coming here about once a month for the past year and a half, and it's ALWAYS a great experience! The food is wonderful, and the staff always treats us as if we were welcomed family. Also, the best margaritas in town, hands down. Just recently, they got all new furniture from a town near Guadalajara, that improves the seating arrangements and makes for a more authentic feel. I usually order the puntas de filet a Mexicana, and its always delicious. OH--and their flour tortillas are soft, light, and fluffy like you're eating delicious clouds! Nice little gem on HWY 99! Very affordable menu: almost all lunch menu items are under $10. The food was good with nice size portions. They're not as large as other places I have been to, but for the price it's hard to beat. No booths; all table seating. Salsa could use some more chunks but all around a solid find. This was our first time here and we decided to get something to go. First, we noticed the decor which we liked very much. The service was friendly and the food was tasty, made from good ingredients. We waited 25 mins. for our two large orders of the Guajillo Natchos which was a bit long. We were told there would be a 15 min. wait for our to-go order. After everything was said and done, we arrived home to discover our natchos looked as if they sat a little too long. Forget the naysayers - this place has DELICIOUS Mexican food at GREAT prices. I find myself dreaming of the chicken burrito special, which I get mojado style. And I have to say that the salsa this place serves with their free chips (try to get that elsewhere on 99) is The Bomb. I consider myself very picky and also very experienced with everything from taco trucks to high end Mexican food. I'm telling you that this place is on my go-to list...they have worked out the start-up kinks and I have had 3 outstanding meals in a row there. They have a great new menu, and I noticed they now also have siete mares ceviche as well as veracruz style fish. Pozole on the weekends, mmm. Again I ask...where else around here will you get that? It's cheaper and better than the local competition. I dunno - I've got it on regular rotation, and I am no easy customer when it comes to this my favorite type of ethnic food. read more

This was my first time here. It was weird. Like most Mexican restaurants, we were started with chips and salsa. Both were very good. The salsa in particular, was very good. But we ran out of chips with a party of 3. Never in the history of going to Mexican restaurants has my table been cut off after 1 bowl of chips. But this happened here. We asked for more. Never came. We ordered Nachos, and a very large special to share between 3. The pork on the nachos was very tender and well seasoned. The best part of the meal by far. Odd part of the nachos. There was no bean on the nachos. But when my girlfriend got towards the bottom of the plate there was refried beans caked onto the plate. We don't know if there was a smear of beans that was used as "nacho glue" to prevent chips from sliding around, or if this was a dirty plate. The large special (i don't remember the name) had chili verde, a chicken enchilada, some spicy pork that I don't recall the name. The chili verde was a little on the bland side. The enchilada was excellent. The spicy pork was like the verde, a little on the bland side also. Service was poor. Our waiter was very polite, but absent. He never refilled the chips to enjoy the salsa that was quite good. Nor did our water ever get refilled. Had we ordered drinks, this probably wouldn't have mattered, but we only had water. Over all, I'd say 2 out of 5, BUT.....I would return to give them another try. A second experience like that though, and I would not go back. read more

After getting sat, I was forgot about. I thought about leaving, but I really wanted a margarita. So I flagged down a waiter and placed my order. I received chips and salsa shortly after. The chips looked like they were made in house as well as the salsa, but the salsa bland, almost like water. At last my margarita showed up and wasn't as good as the last one I had from Sanchez right down the road. Then my enchiladas showed up. The meat was kind of dry, but the rice was good. The rice & beans were better than the actual entree itself... the salsa wasn't my favorite either. We eat here regularly when we want to treat ourselves. They have good service, good food, and a very creative menu. My own personal favorite menu option is the Chile Rellano plate swimming in sauce with rice and rice. Sometimes I get the enchiladas and they are awesome too. We have taken guest from out of town here regularly and they are always pleased with the menu options and variety. My wife says the Margaritas really are the best in town. We stopped in for the first time after passing El Guajillo for many years on the way up and down Hwy 99. We had the burrito lunch special and loved them. The waitress offered the usual chicken, beef, shredded beef and also steak. My wife ordered the steak ... and then they came to say they don't offer steak burritos for the lunch special but they'd do it for us anyway. I had the chicken and it was delicious. We thought that was very nice!! We'll definitely try this again, maybe next time for dinner. read more
