¡Nos encanta la buena comida! And who doesn't love good eats? El Huarache Azteca es una joya local escondida en Highland Park. We were up the street at The OffBeat and la cena/dinner was calling para mi y a mi novio. I'd never had huarache and neither has he, but would had two delicious ones along with great service and beverages. The inside is nice, but the weather was perfect so we dinned outside at once of their tables as did many others. He order in Spanish and I understand every word him and our amazing waitress exchange. I started to order in Spanish, but got in my head about conjugating properly, but práctica hace los centavos... So maybe next time lol Everything is authentic and amazing. Great vegetarian options that are also vegan friendly. Refreshing Aguas Frescas, Cafe/Coffee, and various Soft Drinks (Jarritos, Coca Mexicana aka Mexican Coke, Sangría Señorial, Perrier and more). Plus bottled cervezas! Their menu has a lot of variety, aside from the star of the show (huarache). You can also order tacos, tortas, sope, nachos, gorditas, burritos, y tanto (so much)! Great art and murals, especially inside along with a menu board. They give you physical menus and red as well as green sauce for the table, both of which are excelente, though the red has more heat naturally. We enjoyed the Huitlacoche (Corn Mushroom) sin queso y sin crema (without cheese & cream) for me and the Flor de Calabaza (Squash Blossom) for him with everything. It was like a flat bread with refried beans, cilantro, onion, corn and the topping of choice. The masa is perfect and one is a good meal, two is plentiful. We didn't have their chips with salsa or guacamole this time as we snacked a little beforehand, but definitely will next time. Sandia Agua Fresca is a 10/10, never had one so pure and so good. Tasted like the freshest watermelon jugo I've ever had. And the food is 12/10 for sure. Prices are more than reasonable. Restrooms inside for customers with easy access. Parking is street. Pup friendly if dinning outside. Open siete dias a semana from 8am to 8pm.

    Menu as of 3/28/26

Food is good, but on-site menu prices are 80% higher than what is advertised on their (outdated) website. See recent photos.

This place is a local gem family owned and operated in the city of highland Park. And it's serving up really delicious, authentic Mexican food with a big variety of meat options available best known for their huaraches. But my personal favorite, there is the chilaquiles with a steak and eggs. This is a family friendly restaurant seating inside and they have a lot of different agua fresca flavors to choose from. . On sat & sunday's day, they have barbacoa and menudo available. The owners and staff are so friendly. They made me feel like family and the restaurant has a low dim light setting, that's just calming, you're able to completely enjoy your food

Chicken mole plate Is so good here and yummy All made so Fresh good portion size

Tasty huaraches and agua frescas! This is a must stop in Highland Park. It is a cute restaurant. A huarache is a traditional Mexican dish that is fried masa with beans inside. The toppings in include your choose of meat - carne asada, chicken, chicharrones, etc. You can pick your type of veggies. If you have picky eaters, you can order everything on the side. It's very affordable and worth a try since it is a traditional Mexican dish. The agua fresca was very refreshing. It was authentic (not made with powder). It was not overly sweet. I tried the sandia (watermelon) and it was so good. Parking is street parking. It can be a challenge, but it's worth it if you're looking for authentic Mexican food. The customer service was so-so.

    Meat quality is awful
    Alex ..

Dross. I ordered the Green Sauce Beef Wet Burrito. The green sauce was bitter and nasty. The meat quality was awful, with a significant portion being inedible (like almost half). Tough and Chewy...had to toss it in the trash. Not a one time situation. It's always bad so that is why I am writing this review.

A hidden Gem in highland park! A must try in the neighborhood. Lost of seating available. Parking: street parking available. I ordered the Popular Huarache de Asada - it's so damn good i had to come back for seconds . Their michelada is also really bomb!

    Super Huarache

Super huarache is less than $15 and makes a really good brunch or dinner. It's filling and the salsa is flavorful. They give you 2 options : 1 mild and 1 spicy . My bf got carne asada - it's a tried and true for a reason Service is good, calm but friendly. The server explained to me what's in the order so we know if it's enough food. The place is clean with good ambiance , really nice for a valentines date night, give this place a chance if you are in the area.

    They've lost their touch
    Brenda R.

Not only did the cost of food went up but they also started getting stingy with the amount of meat they throw in. Almost $8 for this huarache so that I can eat just masa??? Ridiculous. On top of that their meat is no longer tasty, just dry.

The staff are lovely humans who really seem to care about their customers. We have some faves on the menu. The bean dip is fabulous and I'm addicted to the baby gem salad. They have recently amped up the filling in the delicious crispy squash blossoms and I love the acidity and heat. The fish is also a hit in my books. One dish that doesn't work for me is the lamb chops, which is a shame since it's my favorite protein. I've ordered them multiple times with clear instructions on temperature and have found them overcooked and tough. The beef tostada was just ok. Whilst I loved the pickled veg on the side, the beef was underseasoned. It wasn't bad - just not up to the standard of other dishes. Located between Koreatown and Pico-Union, this restaurant delivers an outstanding dining experience from the moment you're seated. My wife and I both ordered the Mole Coloradito with chicken, and it was absolutely delicious. One detail we really appreciated was being able to choose between white meat or dark meat--a thoughtful touch that lets you customize your meal to your preference. The mole was rich, complex, and full of flavor, exactly what you would hope for from a restaurant known for its Oaxacan specialties. As a welcome appetizer, they bring fresh chips and salsa to the table, but what really impressed us was when they replaced the salsa with their incredible mole sauce. It was so good we found ourselves dipping everything into it. Both meals were served with rice that was perfectly cooked with a great consistency and flavor. For those feeling adventurous, give the Chapulines (grasshoppers) a try. They may sound intimidating, but they were surprisingly enjoyable and added to the authentic experience. The staff was exceptionally friendly, attentive, and patient with those of us who are not fluent in Spanish. Their hospitality made us feel comfortable and welcomed throughout our visit. As soon as you walk up the stairwell you'll be transported into this super cute place with an outdoor-indoor feel, almost like an elegant treehouse. We were seated on the second level which provided a Birds Eye view of the restaurant. We ordered a few items to share: Cameron ceviche, flautas and for our sweet tooth, French toast paired with a mango sorbet surprise with a candle for our birthdays (tip: we drizzled the melted sorbet on our French toast and took small scoops with each bite - game changer!). Everything was so delicious! We also ordered mocktails, a miche-nada for him and a lemony drink for me. This experience wouldn't have been as great without the exceptional service we had. I browsed the menu and had a really hard time deciding, but ended up on the cauliflower rajas taco, the crispy shrimp taco & the vegan Korean BBQ taco. The waiter recommended the crispy shrimp taco, but I actually enjoyed the vegetarian tacos more. I love cauliflower and poblano so that taco was a great starter. So much flavor and a variety of textures. The tortillas were super flavorful too. The potato taquitos came next and I am actually obsessed. The outside was perfectly crispy, the interior was soft, flavorful & cheesy. The sauce complimented it perfectly. I can not recommend them enough. The crispy shrimp taco was really good, but I also tried a crispy fish taco and would honestly get that over the shrimp. I think there was mango or something in the coleslaw of the fish taco because it had a really nice fresh flavor to it. Last, I had the vegan Korean BBQ taco. The mushroom shreds & the flavor were just perfect. Again, as a pescatarian I have really never had Korean BBQ because it's so heavily meat focused. I truly loved this taco. Another standout was the Scallop Aguachile. The portion of scallops was surprisingly generous, and the bright, tart sauce complemented the sweetness of the scallops perfectly. Easily one of the best aguachiles I've had. My fiancé ordered the seafood soup, and it was just as impressive. It was loaded with fish and shellfish, making it feel well worth the price.
