Given that it's located in the trendy, and upscale Bishops Arts District which offers you different high priced culinary style restaurants...this place is a steal. And don't let the run-down looks deter you from visiting this cool lil spot...the hospitality, and great tasting dishes will make up for that. A morning ritual in Texas is that of breakfast tacos. Meats, eggs, potatoes, between a warm flour tortilla is the perfect sidekick to some coffee! This place has them for $1.50 a piece with several classic options. You can add cheese for extra if you'd like. I just had a side of salsa, some black Community coffee. They also went ahead and brought out a short stack (2) of pancakes that I hadn't ordered yet and was still on the fence about. They were good, fluffy and very sweet, but I couldn't finish them. The breakfast tacos, of ham/egg and potato/egg were exactly what you'd expect. Nothing fancy. Nothing outstanding or the best I've ever had. But they hit the spot, especially considering the size of them! They are quite large so be aware when ordering. (Also, I feel like I could have gotten the Migas - missed opportunity on my part). Oh shit...here we go! Ok we just walked in and i am the only greengo here and they all looked at me crazy- good sign! Took a seat and it took a minute but here is chips y salsa. Dropped without a word. Fresh and crunchy hard corn chips with...yup- salsa the way salsa should be made. Very spicy with large chunks of onions, jalepenos and cilantro. Oh man this is looking good! Oh shit thats spicy! YES! Awesome menu with lots of traditional simple plates, like tortas, enchiladas and nachos, and a surprising amount of greengo choices like pancakes and bacon. I ordered a steak/beef torta and two barbacoa tacos (balsy order for first time i know). Barbacoa will make or break a place am i right?! I actually ordered 1 beef taco 1 steak torta and 1 barbacoa taco, but either my waitress didnt understand me, or she overruled my order (which i think was the case and i was cool with it). To my pleasure, she asked corn or flour for the tortilla (if you order flour you are a child or dont belong...just sayin). I asked for FRESH jalapeños and please make it spicy (once again the "this greengo loco" look washed over her. She also said i had ordered too much and that i couldnt eat all of it. What? Someone cared about my experience an wallet? Or she knows the cook is lazy i dint know. Regardless i showed her my massive bicep (i can curl like 15 lbs.) and said "im a big boy!" Shortly after i am brought what looks like a short cuban baguette sliced in half, butter grilled and filled with steak chunks (maybe 1/2 lb of meat-HUGE!) avacodo, sliced (yup) american cheese, mayonnaise lettuce and tomato. Unfortunately it came with pickled jalapeños instead of fresh. Without me saying a word, she jumped and said "oh baby you wanted fresh jalepenos" at which point she rushed off and returned with a large ramekin of fresh diced jalapeños and some hot ass red sauce. As i dove into the torta, the world as i knew it ceased to end. At first sight i was disappointed, but after one bite i realized some mother freakin Einstein genius of a mexican cook had concocted this torta of all sandwiches. My world spun, my culinary life flashed before myeyes and i floated off to a world of plesure i did not know existed. Apparently the owner of the place (apparently 20 yrs strong as proprietor) saw me begin this spiritual food driven out of body experience, and asked me if everything was OK. Now i dont speak spanish but apparently the spirit ran through because i rattled off something in fluent spanish that apparently meant this is one of the greatest things that has ever graced my face and accompanying mouth eyes and nose...holy shit. She just nodded as to say "yeah no shit gringo 20 freakin years". Now this out of body experience may have been spurred by the 4 alarm fire growing in and around my taco-vaccuum brought on by the fresh jalapeños and red fire sauce. Looking down from above i saw one of the staff try to spray me with a fire exstinguisher, but as expected from a small family run Mexican food restaurant that shit was broken and didnt spray me. Probably a good thing. About the time the feeling started returning to my face my barbacoa tacos were brought out. The meat of the gods (my god at least) was perfectly as you want your barbacoa presented. It was greasy, but just greasy enough. There was very little visible fat, and had obviously prepared with love and care as the texture, consistency and flavor were all exactly as i hoped. Barbacoa perfection! And of course this angel of Tex-mex brought out fresh cut cilantro and sweet white onions. I had multiple tongasms at this point - shit. To be clear, this is an old family owned restaurant for Mexican people. If you are picky dont go. Also, eyes forward dont look around as it is NOT as clean as you want. If you try hard enough you will probably find one or more health code violations (maybe maybe not, i didnt try), but I DONT CARE. For food this good i would eat in a grayhound bus station bathroom. To take it farther, if you suck at all in any way dont go...i dont want to see you there and neither do i. Rule of thumb- if you tip less than 20-25% and are white DONT GO, you are better off at Uncle Julios or that burrito chain millenials eat. BTW millenials arent allowed in this place so fuckoff please all you millenial entitled dipshits.. I will offer this advice, dont order ice tea- just dont. 5 stars is not enough, these people RULE! Praises cheeses. *amen* To be honest, I didn't even know this place was here until I accidentally walked in one day. Don't ask where I intended on going cause I don't remember. But I do remember that waft of a delicious smell that filled my whole body. Be prepared to just stand there, cause there ain't no waiting area nor is there a hostess. Just lots of people running around, cleaning tables and of course...eating. A waitress saw me and said "sit wherever"...so uh, I did. Sat in a measly, old and ripped booth. It was heaven. A sweet man brought over warm chips and delicious salsa. I mean real delicious. A few minutes later the waitress dropped off (in a hurry) a huge booklet for the menu. A reason I LOVE this menu is because it was definitely created and printed with Clip Art pictures of steamy mounds of food. Who remembers the joy of Clip Art and printing from your inkjet printer? Then putting them in sheet covers to protect them fo'eva and eva! Holla! I ordered the huevos con papas. Mmmm, scrambled eggs mixed with roasted potatoes and a side of refried beans. Comes with tortillas. Good lawd!!! Delicious HUGE chunks of potato and loved that I was able to make my own little tacos. MP usually gets the burrito with eggs, jalapenos and onions. Eats it all. The overall menu is a typical divey Mexican joint. Burritos, tacos, enchiladas and soup. I've never had to soup here, but I notice that a lot of people order it, looks delicious. Oh and they also have chicken fingers and mac and cheese for the kiddos. Always a great crowd, both families and couples! Prices are super cheap, our meal was $11 - including tip. We found ourselves in the Bishop Arts District this morning. At 10:00 am, only El Jordan, Cafe Brazil, and Oddfellows were open. Oddfellows had 1 hour and 30 minute wait. That was a no go for my impatient crew so we came here. El Jordan was busy. Had one table left. The place is small so it's packed with people on each side of you. I ordered the migas and husband got the breakfast tacos. Right off the bat you can tell it's a family owned business. We sat by the kitchen so we seen the 2 man show cooking. It took 1 hr and 15 mins before we got our food. Hell, I could've waited at Oddfellows for that long. An hour in and most of the tables were granted chips and salsa. The salsa was delicious. 15 minutes later out food came. My water went unfilled. My migas were good. The husband liked his breakfast tacos. I debated between 2-4 stars, but after I read Heli's review saying they have been open for 18 years, how could I review them negatively. The 2 man show in the back was crankin the food out as fast as they could. I used to like El Jordan more than I do now. Some of the stuff is good, but the service is very spotty. They often forget part of the order (although they usually apologize afterwards), sometimes it is just very slow. They only sometimes have chips and salsa. I used to get the barbacoa tacos, which I liked for not being too greasy - but the last couple times I felt queasy after eating them so I switched to the ham, egg, and cheese burrito (which is really more soft-taco sized, order two!). My honey likes the menudo. The french toast is not bad, it's wheat though which is a bit odd. They have Mexican cokes, which is a plus. I think the thing that turned me off them though was seeing one of the dishwashers come out of the bathroom and not wash her hands. I've been very hesitant to go back after that. read more

Overall we love El Jordan. Good, genuine (though certainly not tops on the healthy scale) Tex-Mex at a great price. Breakfast and lunch only, the breakfast is served all day, which is great for the times you're in a pancake kind of mood. Everything is very basic, no fancy flavored pancakes or Eggs Benedict, but we've eaten here more times than I can count and never had a complaint. They also offer an "American menu" of burgers, sandwiches and the like. I've never tried their burger (that's Hunky's domain for me), but really like the club sandwich on occasion. The Mexican fare is tasty and inexpensive. Lunch plates average about $7 and are definately filling. Get a combo plate with beans and rice or a big messy plate of yummy nachos. The staff is great. They've all been there for the 7+ years we've been going and are always very friendly. They only lose a star with me due to the fact that the restaurant could really use a little overhauling. While I'm a fan of the unfrilliness of El Jordan, unripped tablecloths and a less dingy bathroom would be nice. And as tasty as the food is, on occasion it's a little too heavy on the grease! read more

I really love this place. I'm so white, I attract moths at night, so listening to me trying to order off a mexican restaurant's menu is about as funny as listening to an Asian trying to say, "Ya'll". The food is really good. The portions are humongous, rarely does anyone finish their plate. The salsa is always fresh, but it varies in heat from day to day...which is bound to happen when a salsa is home-made. The prices are so cheap, you could feed 3 people for under $20, easy. Breakfast is awesome. I recommend the burritos which are about a buck fifty each. If you've had a few too many the night before, the menudo will do the trick...just don't ask what's in it. You already DYL'd, what do you care what's in your soup? For lunch I recommend the tacos al carbon, flautas, carne asada, enchiladas, or fajita nachos. Now that I'm done with half the menu, go ahead and eat the rest of it too. El Jordan as previously reviewed is quite the hole-in-the-wall, but that's why it's so charming. Holy mother of chorizo! I have found my new favorite breakfast spot in Dallas. Coming from Austin, I have always wanted to find a place in Dallas that was comparable to Polvos or Juan In A Millions. El Jordan Cafe is the kind of place that hasn't changed in decades. The restaurant has probably had the same mismatched tables and chairs, a serving staff that barley speaks any english, and the cheesy mural on the wall of the Mexican country side for years and years. These are the reasons you should initially fall in love with it. Lets get to the goods. The Migas on the menu are good, but you can them ten times better. Ask to have the homemade chorizo scrambled into the mix. When the food came to the table, the aromatic scent of chorizo and peppers awakened my senses. At the first bite, the heavens opened. The tortilla strips added crunch while the chorizo and peppers added a fiery spice to the tongue. I have found exactly what I have been searching for. read more

So, you are in the Bishop Arts District at breakfast or lunch time and want to eat..you could go to one of the many newish gentrified eateries or you could go to the one outpost of pre-gentrification, El Jordan. El Jordan is old, torn up, cramped, and the servers barely speak English, so of course I love the place. The food is simple and good. The cheese and onion enchiladas I had didn't look like much but the yellow cheese mixed with chopped white onions tasted amazing. This is old school Tex-Mex comfort food. The beans are nice and greasy and taste so good when mixed with the solid, standard Spanish rice. I ordered an extra taco with fajita meat. It came in a flour tortilla and was enormous. The prices are great. I waddled out of there for not too much over 12 bucks with tip. If you are up tight and can't stand a down and dirtty divey spot to eat this place is not for you and if that is the case and you are in the BA there are plenty of places for you in the area. Alos be warned; parking in this area is awful. There is a large lot near by but it is marked for other places than El Jordan with ominous no parking signs. Also, bare in mind that is a breakfast and lunch only joint. They close up before three I believe. I hav heard that this is also a very good place for a cheap greasy breakfast. I have only had lunch here so I cannot vouch but if I were a betting man, I would put it all on this being a great joint for breakfast. read more

First they were understaffed so you had to get your own table, and quickly sit down, wait until they cleaned the table, and wait some more so they could come take our order. I will continue to visit El Jordan Cafe because the food is amazing but today 10/22/21 about 11am they gained a fan of El Jordan Cafe, I witnessed the staff interact with someone less fortunate and how the interaction went was even more impressive such a small gesture for someone who is already down and out. I also witnessed many customers coming in with concern for El Jordan Cafe and the limited traffic that comes through. We need more establishments like El Jordan Cafe. With all of Dallas' upper crust hipster-dom building up around it, El Jordan has held its ground as the bastion of the original, non-planned cafe of Bishop Arts. I love the area, but I do find it refreshing to have something original here, something that wasn't communally crafted to serve a demographic, but rather serve good cheap food independent of neighborhood trends. Having got that out, come here for a very inexpensive, but equally satisfying Mexican breakfast or lunch. The breakfast tacos are under 2 bucks and they're huge. If you're looking for something a little more American/Texan, go for the chicken fried steak and eggs. Don't expect anything fancy here, but the service always comes with a smile and the food quality to price ratio lands somewhere in the almost perfect sector. read more
