Chicken tacos are so bland! I was so surprised- they tasted like nothing. And the chips were stale. I must be getting picky since El Pollo Loco tacos are so much better and their chips are fresher and salted! I went back and ordered a combo meal and they were okay- the chicken fajitas were a little bland, the carne asada quesadilla was much better.

Fairly decent food at #2. I haven't been to the original El Sombrero, so I couldn't tell you if it's any better or worse. I can tell you this, it's way better than what sits across the parking lot. Located at the end of a strip mall, #2 makes do with what little space that has been allotted them. If you're not friendly with whom you're sitting at the beginning of your meal, you sure will be by the end! Quite intimate are the booths. As I mentioned, the food is fairly decent. I believe that I'm being fair with that assessment. There are some hits and misses, but mostly hits. Like the taquitos. They're big and flavorful, and they come with rice and beans, which are also a hit. I'd take a pass on the ground beef offerings. There's better stuff on the menu. Try the Chile Rellenos, though. They're spot on. You'll get full at "the hat." If you're looking for a place to take the edge off a long day of surfing, or if you've got the munchies, this is for you. The prices are a bit steep, but bite the bullet. It's worth it because they don't use lard. That lubricant can foul up the stoutest of constitutions. Quick Tip: I wonder if anyone has noticed that they serve their Coke in Pepsi cups.

    Quick beef taco. Great service

Old School hole in the wall but still delicious traditional Mexican food. I ordered just one Beef crunchy taco. Originally I thing this was a pick up n go.or maybe a fast food type of dining, however, there were quite a few patrons seated and it was near capacity. Changing my mind, I decided I'd sit dow and took the last table. After i ordered at the front the cashier and the servers were quite chill bringing me water and chips. These chips were not greasy at all. A little thicker than usual but tasty. I enjoyed my quick stop between errands here. Will be back. Parking in the mini-strip mall.

I was looking for a new Mexican restaurant and think I have found one with El Sombrero! I ordered take out, however, the restaurant is spacious but cozy and next time I'll be sitting down to eat! I ordered the Viking Burrito (which I thought was a weird name for a burrito), and it might have been one of the tastiest burritos I've had in the South Bay! Every flavor was pronounced, the citrus in the carnitas, the beans, the rice and the AMAZING green sauce to make it wet! Absolutely loved this burrito! Homemade chips and their salsa has a unique flavor and is delicious! On top of that, the front counter person was SUPER nice.

    Blandest salsa and burrito ever...

At 57, having lived my entire life in Southern California, I know good, authentic Mexican cuisine. This place is definitely not that. The chips are cold and taste like they come from a factory bag, not cooked there fresh, warm and greasy as they SHOULD ALWAYS BE. The salsa is extremely bland and tastes sweet. They were not able to put anything really spicy inside my burrito like serranos, habañeros or even jalapeños. To make it spicy, they brought me a bottle of Tapatío. Whatever. The sauce on my wet burrito tasted like it came from a can. I took two bites, stabbed my fork into it, told the cashier what I thought of their cuisine, paid my $17.50 and left, never to return again... IN ALL SERIOUSNESS, I WOULD RATHER HAVE TACO BELL BECAUSE YOU KNOW IT IS KIDDIE FOOD. IT'S NOT PRETENDING TO BE REAL MEXICAN.

Fish and potato tacos and rice
    Rebecca T.

El Sombrero has been an establishment in the South Bay for years, and I had to give it a try. I had a fish taco and potato taco, along with a side of rice. The tacos were warm, tender, and very tasty, and absolutely packed with lettuce inside. This is just my personal preference, but I would've liked to have had less lettuce in my tacos. The rice was the star of the show, however: so flavorful that I wanted more! Overall, an inexpensive option for dinner that'll leave you full AND leftovers for the next day!

I came here for dinner on a Sunday night and my experience here was pretty good! My family and I shared the following dishes: -Chicken and Steak Fajitas: The meat was flavorful and tender. They came with warm homemade tortillas and it was tasty. -Chicken Taquitos: These were tasty, but a little less crunchy than I would like for my taquitos. -Chicken Enchiladas: Solid, saucy, and cheesy. -Chicken Tamale: Also solid and moist. -Shrimp Fajitas: Plump shrimp and tasty. -Chips and Salsa: Tasty and crunchy and I love the heat from the salsa. Birthday Flan: Creamy, custardy, and not too sweet. Honestly, there were no misses here. Everything was tasty, flavorful, and nothing was too dry. The prices were also good and not too overpriced for Mexican food considering the area. The service here was pretty good and efficient. Parking is metered parking. The food here was not mind-blowing and I would still opt for other places though. However, it is a solid pick for a restaurant and Mexican food in Manhattan Beach.

What made it worse was there were gentlemen on either side of me who got another beverage and the check without me getting a menu. They even noticed and gave me their menus! And said they'll try to get the bartenders attention for me. *awkward* but also so nice of them. I eventually ordered - my beverages were delicious and the food was good. We were staying near LAX and I didn't want to drive too far, so we stumbled upon this Mexican spot in the cutest little downtown area ever. El Segundo, you are THAT b*tch! We arrived around 5:30 on a Saturday and were seated immediately (thank goodness). Our server was super duper friendly and even had multiple conversations with us throughout the meal, sharing anecdotes and talking to my tattoo artist friend about getting a tat from her LOL. We quickly ordered some chips and queso (not free) and were blown away by how creamy and tasty the queso was. The tortas were also delicious and easy to scoop a lot of cheese on to. On to the menu, they had a good variety of Mexican dishes, but the price point, man. I thought $4-5 a taco at Barrio Queen in Arizona was steep, but this place charged $7-8 for a single small taco. I would've been okay with any menu item since it's Mexican and nothing under that cuisine could be bad, but seeing each enchilada over $30, made me steer clear of the main entree dishes. I also knew I wanted to try fish tacos, so I just opted for one fish taco and one grilled taco, with a side of mashed black beans. Crazy that some black beans also were at least $5. The fish taco was nicely battered and the guacamole was ripe and creamy, but the grilled chicken taco was nothing spectacular. There was also cauliflower tacos and beef brisket tacos ordered among us. My friend who ordered the beef brisket taco rated it 7.5/10, whereas the cauliflower tacos were rated 9/10. The food also took at least 20 minutes to arrive at the table. Both sauces my tacos came with were extremely spicy so I didn't even touch those. My friends enjoyed their meals, and the side of green rice two of them got was rather tasty. Overall, our server was the best part of the experience. She really ate DOWN, whereas our food and the price point did not.

He's been coming to this location since before I was born and I'm damn near 40. But this time I came alone and the place was packed. They don't have a big seating area. It's like a bar with about four seats to the right and four seat seats to the left so it doesn't accommodate many people, so people order to go. And that was my plan. I walk in and the server (with his chef at and money taped to it) and I grab the same menu. He allows me to have it, and he grabs another and gives it to one of the customers. I say all this to say that he definitely knows exactly when I arrived. However, A white man walks up less than a minute later and for some reason he decides to ask him if he ready to order, as if I'm invisible. This was the second time that this happened to me today and God knows how many times has happened to me in life. So at some point, I just have to stop ignoring the fact that Black people aren't welcome in certain spaces. Maybe we are by law, but not at all met with respect! That is all!

When I was thinking of writing this review, I imagined explaining that I had not been to this…read moreeatery in years. And that much is true, I went in 2023 because I wrote a Yelp then for that experience. And I continue to believe it is a "solid choice." I can see how it can lend itself, and be enjoyable, to many eaters. And how its beach adjacent location draws many sandal wearers and surfers gone business casual for the night. So I will begin my focusing on what I thought was our servers faux pa. My friend Conrad and I hang out on spin mode, with the cycle never really stopping. So we kind of have an implicit expectation that sometime during our time together we will break bread. But on this ocassion, I had already eaten and he had not. This does not mean that his hunger would be true until we parted ways. We could eat together, even if I was not eating. We were by the joint so we decided to eat there because I wanted to share with him what I have found to be consistently solid and pleasant. While we were there we got a table for two. We informed our server that only Conrad would be eating, since I had already. And he gave a look. Yes, a look that I interpreted as a mix of confusion and judgement- which together makes out of place bewilderment. Why? I can totally see a pair of folks being too embarrassed to go into a restaurant, especially, a nice place like Manhattan Beach Post if only one was eating. Again, I can understand that easily. I mean people are shy and unwilling to insert themselves in situations that are non standard. But then there is other people. The people who wear PJs to the store, who rock hair of a purple shade, and well, others have grown so old that eating with a friend while they are not eating, is not embarrasing, rather just the steps of an unplanned evening. To be more specific, I think the server should have saved his "not even a drink" and proceeding confused face to himself. Conrad and I had valid reasons for entering and not dining as a duo and he should have responded with undersstanding, not just like I had said I was so hungry I could eat bigfoot raw. In short contrast, I offer the host of the place, Crystal. While eating with Conrad I did taste just a wee bit of his four cheese ear shaped pasta- Orichette- and his biscuit. The biscuit is strong but with the maple butter it sings hard, give this buttered biscuit a stage at Madison Square garden or that famous opera house in Sydney. The Orichette was also super good but one of the cheeses had like this chalky taste. It did not taste bad, but also not good, which made me engage with the dish at an analytical way. And personally, when food makes me think, I love it. Crystal heard a version of this dialogue and engaged with me saying that she feels the same way because it makes her feel like a food critic. She also asked me to go when I was hungry. Service like hers makes a place shine. Service like the server gave us makes me question why there was no guard at the door ensuring that both of us had an appetitte. The decor of the place is one that I have seen in the recent the weeks---- brown with live plants. It is lovely. It is both muted and alive. This place has been around for years and will survive my review. And I do plan to go again. And I will make sure to be hungry. I am not sure if I can guarantee that for the person I take but I will try my best.
