We went back again last night to El Torito West Covina. We had a great experience again and ordered different dishes. I had the bacon wrapped shrimp in peppers with manchego cheese, those were bomb! There were different textures and flavors bursting with sweet heat. My husband had the carnitas plate with rice, beans and tortillas, that plate was also bomb. The carnitas were crispy and tender. I had the Modelo Michelada and that was refreshingly delicious. At the end we had the churros with hot caramel and chocolate sauce for dipping and they smelled like a bakery, they were hot and crispy just like homemade. Our service was great again, and Jorge our server was very friendly and helpful as were the rest of the staff that stopped by to check on us or pickup or drop off from our table. The ambiance was light and cheery with the music going in the background and all the smiling people enjoying their food. We will definitely be back, we love this restaurant. read more

So four or five years later my brother wants to try this place. Hmmm... ok... let's give it a second chance. We ordered the 1800 fajita supreme... and it was ok... but the chicken was a little dry. Aside from the food what was upsetting was our waiter. He seemed very he was very upset about something... but we had to face the brunt of his situation. No friendliness and just bewildered when we asked questions. Like... why were we charged $3.84 for soda water. He said something like... it uses CO2 and gotta charge for that. Really?!? Every restaurant we've been to in the past doesn't charge for soda water. And then they add a surcharge to your total without letting people know. Of course it's on the menu in very small print. And the waiter went and got the menu and pointed to the bottom of the menu. On somewhat of a positive note, the waiter did bring out my diet Pepsi refill. No senior discounts... yet they let you know about AAA discounts after you have paid for your bill. El Torito seems to be scraping the bottom of the barrel at nickel and dime people. read more

My family has been coming here for 25 years. We always ask to sit in Ricardo's section if possible. Her know my family when we were still a huge family. When my mother in law passed the amount of people that comes together is less. But he always asks about my father in law since he no longer joins us . We always brag that we always get the best service here. Today was our first Easter and my concern was that that tacos were going to be overtaken by ham & Tri tip. I always look forward to the handmade tortillas and the carnitas. What a perfect venue for a private party. After a solemn day at forest lawn we had our reception here. Upon arrival our tables were clearly marked and area laid out with the correct amount of tables and chairs needed for our guests. A nice separate sort of indoor patio room with fountain and mix of booths and tables. Drinks served and food was buffet style. Plenty of space for guests to walk around and have their fill. Food was nice and hot and refilled right away once it got low, maintaining a clean buffet table. Dessert was served and I have to say it was one of the best flans! I went this past Sunday to have a late lunch, after the brunch. The service was terrible. I ordered an appetizer slightly before my main dish. The waitress said, "ok let me put that in, I'll be right back." She came back, took our order and I never saw her again. After finishing the basket of chips and my water I waited for about 30 minutes in total. I flagged down a bus boy/ avocado maker and asked to speak to our waitress. He said, "ok, what did you need?" I told him, "our food" " we've been waiting for over half an hour and we haven't even gotten our appetizer." He said, " we are really busy right now but let me get her. " He comes back and said, "I called her, she's on her way." He leaves then comes back again and says, " is there anything I can get you? Would you like more water?" I told him, "I would like to speak with your manager. " He said, " what for? It's not like he's going to cook your food for you." Honestly, I felt like choking the avocado out of him and leave but I remained calm and asked to speak with the manager again. 5 minutes passed and I had to flag another waitress and ask for the manager again. Then our waitress shows up and says, "they said you were asking for me?" I said, " are you the manager?" She said, "no". I told her to call the manager for the 4th time. The food finally gets there along with the appetizer and it was cold. Finally the manager shows up and wants to know what the issue was. I told him our Siri and what the bus boy had said when I asked to speak with him. His response was, " what do you want me to do?" I stood quiet until he said, " I can bring you another fresh plate" and he walked away. I ended up getting up and walking out without eating. What a complete waste of time. I came to El Torito for Easter Sunday brunch and honestly had such a great experience. It can get pretty busy on holidays, but everything felt well-managed and the vibe was still relaxed. Our waiter, Hector, was a standout--super friendly, funny, and really attentive without hovering. You can tell he actually cares about the service he's giving, and it made a big difference. The food was solid--everything came out fresh and hot, which I always notice right away. Nothing worse than lukewarm brunch, and that definitely wasn't the case here. I submitted a review a couple months ago as I was not pleased with El Torito removing happy hour from weekends, shortening weekday hours and removing some items from the menue & changing the pricing of others. The review was done in part because a waiter suggested it, stating El Torito pays close attention to Yelp reviews. However it appears management only responds to 5 star reviews & does not address complaints. I also emailed corporate with no response. And El Torito is the only restaurant I'm aware of that still charges a surcharge on every bill while many restaurants did so during the height of Covid which was difficult on many businesses, but they discontinued the surcharge soon after.
