I have mixed feelings/reviews. Guests and wait staff were wearing masks, but the bar tender ( older Latino long hair and mustache) was not. The bar tender (mask-less) handed us our menus and scooped up tortilla chips with his hands and no mask. Everything was a mess. Server took forever to come, food took forever to come and meat was raw. Everyone around seemed to be having the same problem. We ended up leaving and not eating the food. Waitress took 15 minutes to come. Finally ordered our food and waited 45 minutes with no water refills or drink refills. When the food finally came the server was using numbers "I have a #1"... none of us knew what a #1 was and asked "what is that?" She then shouted #1 as if we were stupid for not knowing which numbers correlate with the food items on the menu. The service is horrible, the wait time was inexcusable, and the food was inedible. We had a decent size group, 8 adults and 1 child. My husband and I frequent Truckee multiple times a year, and my family has had a cabin there for over 20 years. When deciding where to eat, my husband made the mistake of recommending this restaurant. The restaurant was not packed and they attempted to accommodate us, if you think sitting 8 people and a baby at a table that did not have enough room for more than 7 chairs is okay. They asked if we wanted a high chair and when we said yes, they never brought it so we went and got one. They brought us chips and 2 pitchers of water. The water ran out after one round for everyone. After waiting for more than 15 minutes and no one coming back to the table, one person in our party got up to go refill the waters because we were all empty. They told her to sit down and they would get it. When they finally brought the water, we asked to order. After about 45 minutes (waters and chips were empty and no one checked on us) they finally started bringing the food out. One person cut into his food and noticed the chicken still looked pink, and as he looked further it looked like it was raw. So the other person who order chicken looked at his and it not only looked raw, but there was blood spots. At that point, we had lost out patience and after leaving money for the ice tea that was consumed, we left. As we went to get the stroller, we found they had used the stroller as storage for a booster seat. The waitress returned as the last of us were leaving and said that the chicken only looked raw from the shade covers they have over the seating area and that it couldn't be raw because they stew their chicken. After looking at their reviews and responses on here (which we started looking at about 45 minutes in) and given our experience, we will NEVER recommend or go to this place again. The service was horrible, the food was inedible, and their attitudes are inexcusable. Side note: We went a few doors down, were seated after a 10 minute wait (which we understand due to the size of our party). I like to order pizza from this place in Virginia Beach called Chicho's. they always ask if you want regular or spicy pizza sauce. The spicy sauce pizza is soooo good, but that is an appropriate context for spicy pizza sauce. Anyway, the salsa here tastes exactly like the spicy pizza sauce from Chicho's. This is definitely the worst Mexican food I have ever had. My super burrito came in a pool of liquid, mind you I did not order a wet burrito. So I continue eating with a knife and fork... My girlfriend got a chicken chimichanga which would have more appropriately been called a bean enchilada with chicken. It was indiscernably fried, we hope, but my larger point is that she ordered chicken chimichangas and the filling was 2/3 beans, who puts beans in chimichangas? I also am thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and had just come in from a 60 mile stretch and was VERY hungry, it should've been extremely easy to make me happy. I think you get the point. Just left - Beer was served warm and had an "off" flavor. Silverware cut my wife's mouth. Looked around at all the other silverware and they were in worse shape. Chicken taco was served so hot that when I took a bite, some juice came out the side and burned my cheek. Took 20 minutes for the two tacos to cool down before I could eat it. Well... The wait time for food was over 30 minutes and when we did get are food the order was wrong to top that off the chicken was raw so raw when you pressed on it all you seen was blood. This was a drive by eating almost a year ago and the fact that I remember just about everything, should scare you away from this place. 1) It was a quiet Sunday evening. It wasn't that busy....so the lack of service we received was rather odd. 2) What I just said....lack of service. I ordered fajitas with ceviche. The guac was mashed and bland, was expecting more of a chunky guac. I was also looking for a healthy option (kinda hard to do when traveling out of town) fajitas are usually a great choice, for the grilled protein and veggies, anyway these fajitas were cooked in some sort of a batter? Meal? I have no idea but there was something else mixed in them :( Disappointing. The burrito was the size of a normal burrito but with a $9 price tag. The burrito was face down on the plate with the seal on the bottom. I tried picking it up and it already started falling apart. The taste was pretty bad and bland and after a few bites I was over it. I had noticed too that the burrito leaked over a tablespoon of water onto the plate and that mixed with everything else that fell out made it look like vomit. I sat right next to the kitchen where the waiter and busser went in and out from. It took at least 10 minutes before the busser noticed me and just offered to take it away, followed by the waiter asking why i didnt like it. Her excuse for a watered down burrito was that they steam their chicken, which explains the bland taste. She went to talk to the manager about removing it and after 10 minutes she came to talk to me about why I didnt like it. I explained it was nasty and not not folded right, way too small, the flour tortilla was nasty, and that it was watery and that i didn't order a wet burrito. She then went on to tell me that the chickens steamed and justified me not liking it by saying its "not my style". She also said that its her family's restaurant and to say her food is good because her grandma makes it. I told her that I'd rather eat taco bell than her food and that if I'm starving and still wont eat your burrito then something is definitely wrong. I asked if we could sit on the outside patio as it was beautiful weather, and the gal only said we do not seat on the patio, when clearly the patio was full of tables and chairs. We ordered a side of beans and rice. A shrimp chimichanga. And a chicken super burrito. The beans were bland and tasteless. The super burrito tasted really soupy like tuna with mushroom soup. The shrimp chimichanga would have been so much better if it wasn't smothered in a weird sauce and soggy. Chimichanga burritos are usually crispy. This was not my first visit to the restaurant. I would not even be giving one star to this establishment if I didn't have to. I am extremely disappointed in the manager who denied my boyfriend access to the restaurant with his service dog. Not only that, but was required to show proof of ID for his service animal and once we spoke up how that is discrimination and illegal he proceeded to argue saying he has been in this business for 25 plus years and how his brother is disabled neck down and that he knows the laws. Well this is on the ADA.gov website and also here is another from ABC 10 news not only two years ago. I suggest the manager learns the actual law so that he doesn't get reported for wrongly discriminating against customers. I am extremely appalled and having just moved here I have never had this experience ever in my life. Honestly, SO disappointed with the services here. Food was meh for me personally. I ordered two carne asada tacos that tastes just okay. We waited for quite a while for the waitress to finally come and take the order. No problem for me at all that she took the order for the customers that came after us. BUT it was very rude of her that she saw me waiving after (politely), and still went around chatting with other customers first. She then came to our table, standing right next to us, had her little order note out, AND still chatting with other customers from our table. Like is this really how they do the services here? On just a to go order, after the waitress said 15 minutes, the order took almost an hour....for tacos and chips. My husband and I had lunch here today while enjoying a day trip to Truckee. We had not eaten here before and just decided we would give El Toro Bravo a try. The restaurant itself is a converted old home and it is not too large, but was comfortable and clean. The service staff was very friendly and service was relatively quick. I ordered a salad with crab which was a basic green salad with surprisingly, a lot of crab! Next came my smothered cheese and bean burrito, which I had asked for added diced onions, it was delivered as ordered and it was a tasty burrito. I brought half home! My husband ordered the Chili Rellanos dinner, being a favorite if his, and he said it was execellent. A plus for us both was a house-made salsa (waitress said it was the owners mom's recipe) served with chips, just enough heat to enjoy without being over the top. We will return! read more

We went here after a trip through Tahoe and ambled our way through downtown Truckee to find a restaurant with reasonable prices. Well, the dishes were huge. I had my hesitations about this place based on the 3 star rating and the initial lack of greeting when we arrived. However, the food and prompt delivery of our order made up for it! The guacamole dip is great but only if you like sour cream (you can always order on the side). The house margaritas were tasty. And finally, the special burrito with chicken was very good. I don't understand these bad reviews. I have been coming here for years when passing through Truckee and we have never had a bad experience. I was just here on Sunday and it was fantastic. We got there around 7:00 and there was a wait, so we went to the bar and the bartender was both friendly, accommodating and made a seriously strong and delicious pitcher of margaritas for my wife and I. When we were sat they took our order quickly and the ceviche, my smothered super burrito and my wife's taco salad were delicious (as everything I have ever had there is). read more

As in other reviews, the customer service is terrible on a level I've never experienced before (except for the Hispanic staff working there..they are awesome). I would advise eating/drinking AT THE BAR. Otherwise, if you're having a great day but decide you suddenly want to be treated like pond scum in exchange for your patronage...then grab a table and brace yourself. We stopped in Truckee for dinner before getting to our condo, since it was close to 9 pm and we wouldn't have had decent food options if we went out after unpacking our car. LOCATION & PARKING: Right on the main strip of restaurants and shops on Truckee, we were happy to find a spot quickly and noticed the parking lot after we ran across the street. Good to know. AMBIANCE: It was festively decorated with colored Christmas lights and there were a lot of larger groups/families, a few couples, and a few pairs at the bar. They had the Giants game on, so the husband was happy (I could care less) and the crowd seemed to be into it. I have no idea if they had inside seating, because they didn't offer it to us. It gets cold outside, be aware/warned. SERVICE: We were greeted after a little bit and the slowness of their service continued... while they were pretty friendly. When we were sat, I immediately requested a heat lamp (as I said it gets cold and this was a summer night!) and three different staff members attempted to turn it on. After none were successful, they gave up, said nothing to me, and I sat their in the cold for the hour that I could last. I would have appreciated at least their gesture of an apology and option to sit closer to another heat lamp. I kept eyeing the other seats/tables/heat lamps throughout our dining, which took from my experience. FOOD & DRINKS: I found the food to be good, but not overwhelmingly delicious. My husband stated the margarita tasted good... but he did get a headache, which usually happens with well drinks (i.e. cheap alcohol). Bottom Line - They had decent prices and were open on a Wednesday at 9 pm, so that was nice. While friendly, they were not very mindful of their client's needs which was kind of a bummer. Passing through Truckee on my way to Reno, El Toro Bravo caught my eye. I didn't expect much from a Mexican restaurant in such a remote location, but boy, was I wrong. Great drinks started me out on the right foot, courtesy of Mike, the bartender par excellence. Tells great stories, so I actually had my food right there at the bar: the assortment of one tamale, one enchilada, one taco. Simply superb, and I've had a lot of Mexican cuisine in my day. This a place that won't see me again. The atmosphere looked cute but after that it went downhill fast and never got near to getting up. The chips were slightly stale and not very flavorful. The margarita tasted as if it was a mix and was overpowering with tequila. My wife prefers flavor over the pure taste of alcohol. Now onto the food. The steak quesadilla was large but lacked any intricacy of flavor, cheese and steak. Not much seasoning. Asked for pico de gallo, costs $3.50 extra. HAPPY HOUR 4-6 This is a great place to come for happy hour. The drinks are cheap and strong, so you definitely get your moneys worth. The food here is also decent but probably a 3 star rating, since I've had much better Mexican cuisine. The Monday Night football nacho meat balls are the BOMB!! They are small meat balls with a kick of spice and glazed with barbecue sauce. You must try them sometime. I'm not sure where they are or if they are on the regular menu though. read more
