Visiting Breckinridge, Co on our annual ski break in early snow covered January. This is an upscale restaurant with down home feel. Apparently an old house converted to restaurant. Appreciate the cozy feel with stain glass windows & well selected art décor throughout restaurant. Be mindful that the food choices are dynamic, especially kid's menu. That was our only issue, my kid only had options of quesadillas or tacos which was okay because they were tasty. We were first served crispy lentil wafers with yogurt dipping sauce. My family's Indian palate devoured that because it's actually a common Indian side dish we call "Papad". We felt the dishes were small portions but perfect for our needs. You can feel the well thought out efforts by the chef, well presented like art also. We ordered the 3 course meal set for $75 with soup d'jour ( soft shell crab with tomatillos) chicken & ice cream of the day ( mint basil) all superb. Ember tries to be an upscale restaurant but in my experience fails miserably. The flavor profiles, heavy handed plating, and mediocre service left much to be desired. Truth be told, I would have rather eaten dinner at a chain restaurant because at least I would have known exactly what I was getting. I ordered the arugula salad, black cod (as recommended by the waiter), and French toast. The arugula salad lacked any sort of distinctive flavor and oddly enough there was a lukewarm stuffed pepper in the middle of the plate. The black cod was barely lukewarm and overcooked. The French toast was palatable but lacked any exciting flavors - it reminded me of something I'd get at a fast food restaurant with a dipping sauce on the side. My friends had issues with their appetizer, the scallop sauce tasted very sour - not sour like would be expected from a lemon butter, but sour as in it had turned bad. When they returned the appetizer to the waiter simply said "what do you want instead." without an apology or any sort or acknowledgment of a likely bad dish. He brought port wine out with the dessert to try to make up for it, but the port wine was not something any of us would drink. I will say that the steak was the best tasting course of any of them and I was jealous of my friends that ordered it! I wish I would have ordered that instead, it was delicious and well cooked. All in all, Ember was disappointing to me. Even at $60 (which i would consider inexpensive for 3 courses) the pricing seemed high for what I got. Charlie or Chuck was not very welcoming. The restaurant was nice, and the food was okay. But Charlie/Chuck was not polite with the simplest of questions. We actually found a hair in our food and didn't even complain about it because we knew how rude he was and we just didn't want to deal with it anymore. When I gave him a polite "constructive feedback" privately he just said "thanks bud". I wouldn't rate this restaurant based off of this servers service alone, but definitely something to think about. The food here is worldly fantastic. A must is the pheasant carnita's with a bit of spice and wonderful mouthfeel. Don't miss the lamb. Oh baby, this is how lamb should be, tender and juicy with a ton of flavor. This chef owned restaurant shows its true colors with an awesome menu and creativity that mirrors some of the best in New York or London. Breckenridge is known for its skiing, but perhaps it should also be known for its food scene; Ember is a Micheline star-quality restaurant nestled amongst black diamonds and blue squares. We went as a large group (10), and they were exceptionally accommodating, setting us up in what was essentially a private room. All members ordered the Three Course pre fixe menu, and all dishes were divine. My courses were as follows: Appetizer: Boar Tenderloin - this is one of the best dishes I have ever had. It was delightfully cooked, and paired with a Brie mousse (yes, Brie whipped into a mousse) and foie gras emulsion that were life-changing. It was the hit of the table Entree: Lobster-Stuffed Pheasant Breast - again, this was exceptional. The bird was perfectly roasted, and the flavors melded together well. A number of people at the table got the Wagyu steak, which was a hit, but I personally preferred the pheasant. Dessert: Pumpkin Bread Pudding - I am not a huge dessert fan, but even this course wowed me. The pumpkin bread pudding was playfully arranged, with accompanying chocolate pop rocks which were an added element of fun. Finally, both the drinks and service were exceptional. Tonight we had the most amazing meal! I've been to Ember many times and have never been disappointed, but tonight was even better. My mom and I shared apps-the scallops and the lamb cheeks. Both incredible. Finished up with the Buffalo entree and the black cod entrees, also incredible. The extra touches on all of the dishes were the best part...black garlic gelatin, fried deviled egg, special sauces on everything. The food was amazing as was the service. read more

The building was very interesting with all the different levels. We got to sit in the top floor which was perfect for our party of 6. The food was fabulous, our table had the scallops, elk, snapper and the quail. I had the quail and By far the stuffing in the quail was the best and the scallops! Do you every feel guilty for fine dining when you decline any wine or drinks beforehand? We kind of felt like the server gave us "that look" but we were simply here for dinner. The chef is clearly very talented because we enjoyed everything immensely. None of the portions were generous but that doesn't bother us at all. I almost spoiled my appetite with the bread and unique cheese spread, check it out. My pork chop was grilled to perfection but I wanted more of the cherry glaze! Enjoyable experience with decent atmosphere. Great at accommodating dietary restrictions and careful to advise on what was in each dish or sub items (example desert). I wasn't the hugest fan of the $75 prefix. I think that the food was good but a bit cold / felt like they had things prepped and just cooked the protein for the dishes. You definitely have to have an open mind and palate. This is a three course fine dining experience for $78 a person. You can only order a la cart at the bar or from one of the three bar top tables in the bar. The food was great, filling, and unique. The portions were small, but given three courses and Indian inspired chips and dip served first, we were all stuffed! We definitely felt cultured after we left. The bread pudding was great, but we were not a fan on the choco latte for dessert. The only reason I give it 4 stars is due to the price, the limited menu, and nothing generic for kids. There were six in our party so we pretty much ordered the whole menu - quail, elk, salmon, New York prime, scallops, duck, ramen soup, and lamp cheeks. read more

I have been to a lot of restaurants, was a cook at some of the best restaurant in the world. I want to give this 0 stars but yelp won't let me. Im not joking when I say this, nothing had flavor $200 meal for two people and not one thing had any salt or was thought out. It all looks pretty but the chef should not be cooking. Our meal had all of the promises of fine dining - a comfortably appointed tasteful room, real paper menus, a good wine list, and attentive service. Everything was in place - everything that is, except flavor - and texture. At first glance, you might think, "Wow, this place offers some interesting dishes combining interesting ingredients in some interesting ways. I am definitely looking forward to having my tastebuds rocked!" Unfortunately, almost everything I tried had the consistency of mush and virtually no flavor whatsoever. Some examples: The dipping sauce for the papadum was harsh. I'm not sure if combining artichokes and avocados is such a good idea. The quail was rubbery. The halibut smelled fishy. The buffalo was so tough I could barely cut it. The ramen noodles tasted soggy, like they came out of a can. The pickled items had almost no sour taste whatsoever. Limp French toast cubes served with tired chunks of cheese was like a sad little joke to punctuate the end of a tremendously disappointing meal. The best bites were supplied by the store-bought ingredients - flaky phyllo dough, and the sweet/tart/richness of amarena cherries. How hard is it to add a sprinkle of salt, a dab of butter, or a squeeze of lemon? I mean, come on. These are the basics. If you are going to ignore them, you better have a damn good reason. Unfortunately, this place does not. I hope we were there on an off-night. I hope there are other times when Ember really shines. If not, it's hard to believe the fans of this place have let this sorry excuse for fine-dining survive for all of this time. Maybe some people are so suckered by the trappings they forget to actually taste the food? If you want to go through the motions of a fine dining experience, without actually experiencing it, then this is your spot. A classic case of "All that Glitters is Not Gold." read more

Fantastic place really, my family and I come here every so often and always have incredible service and food in the dining room. Unfortunately the only reason I'm leaving 4 instead of 5 stars is because of the bartender. My hubs and I came in tonight and I was surprised the she was dressed so, um, casually. More like revealing for what I'd consider a fine dining restaurant. Her demeanor is very off putting such as her speaking poorly about fellow staff and customers loudly. We've also been there a couple times when she's brought her pup in. Although we're dog lovers I'm surprised the owner finds this acceptable. I only feel the need to write this because it's quite literally every time we go there that she's kind of a thorn in everyone's side. Truthfully we've heard similar experiences around Breckenridge about her. The food is so great I'd hate for this place not to do well! Not sure we'd return if she's going to be the only bartender. Maybe we just sit in the dining room from now on. It seems to be much more professional when folks are paying a significant amount of money to be there. read more

I was hoping for more. It almost seemed like they were trying too hard. It was 3 prifixed menu for $70/person which was fine. I don't mind paying money for good food. However it didn't meet my expectations. For the appetizer the Boar Tenderloin was very tough and almost raw in the middle. There was also a mushroom on the plate that I almost couldn't cut with a sharp knife. The flavors in some of the other dishes didn't really go together either. Bad food that needs to be simplified. The culinary staff is trying to do too much and, in doing so, does nothing well. Each dish was more confusing than the next and was seemingly trying to masquerade as high end cuisine by packing as many flavors on one plate as possible. The flavor combinations were bizarre (south Asian curry with guacamole?!) and the kitchen missed or couldn't execute many basics: Scallops were not seared properly, food was not heated all the way through or hot food was put on a cold plate. veal cheeks were basically unseasoned, ice cream was crystalized and freezer burnt, ribeye was filled with inedible silver skin. Most tables, including ours, were not finishing their plates and the servers clearing them did not ask why - an indicator that the staff knows the food is subpar. We meet some friends here for dinner. Honestly, expectations were low because it was one of a few places we could get a reservation. BOY WAS I WRONG! We couldn't decide what to have so we ended up sampling almost every appetizer on the menu. Kumquat salad, lobster enchilada & wagu lettuce rolls were some of our favorites. But there wasn't a bad dish in the group we tried. Topped it off with some desserts to share the chefs special ice cream & root beer pie didn't disappoint. I called the day of for last minute reservations and even though they didn't have any openings when i called when we arrived, they made it work for us. We had an incredible experience. We chose to eat at Ember when we couldn't get into a popular steak restaurant in Breck. I am glad that we couldn't get into the other place because Ember surpassed everyone's expectations. We were escorted to an upstairs private dining room that was very nice. Our waiter was very informative, experienced and personable. The menu was diverse and the wine selection was large. We started with a nice bottle of Pio Cesare Pinot Noir....very tasty! We decided on the simple salad and rock shrimp for appetizers. For my entree, chose the Lamb Osso Bucco and it was absolutely delicious. Highly recommended. I ate every bite. Kim ordered the Scallops and they were amazing. All of our food was incredible....a true culinary experience. From the atmosphere to the service to the food, I can't say enough about Ember. Well done!!! read more

This was one of the worst meals I've ever had at a restaurant in my life and I'm not even exaggerating. The fact that we were charged $75 for this three course meal makes this even worse. I'll start with the good. Our waitress was amazing. She knew the menu well and was able to make substitutions for someone with a few dietary restrictions. She provided great service and was always quick to ask us if we'd like to order more drinks or if we needed water refills. Now let's get to the awful. Everything on the menu sounds amazing, but once you get your food you realize it is a "jack of all trades master of none" situation. They simply tried to do way to much instead of focusing on flavor. I wasn't expecting a Michelin star restaurant, but when the best bite of food was a mediocre tasting piece of yucca cake then it says a lot about the quality of the dishes. I was with a large group and literally everyone hated every dish they ordered. Let's talk about the dishes now. Based on the recommendations of the waitress everyone in are large party got the Lamb Cheeks or the Scallops. The lamb cheeks were tender, but were drowned in a sauce that completely hid the lamb. The flavors did not combine well at all. They had so many different elements to the dish that everything got lost. It was such a disappointment. You should be highlighting Colorado lamb and not hiding it. The same complaints were similarly made about the Scallops which I didn't personally taste. The entree that I ordered was the Lobster Piquillo Relleno. About half the table ordered the this dish and they all had the same criticisms. This was an insult to Lobster. It lacked any lobster flavor and the lobster was completely lost in the dish. Again there were many different elements to the plate and nothing went well with each other. There wasn't a single memorable part of the dish. Every flavor was muddled. The other half of our group ordered the Wagyu dish. I've never seen a steak unfinished unless someone had ordered a large cut at a steakhouse and they got the rest to go. At least 3 people in our group didn't finish it. The most common complaint was the lack of seasoning and that the steak arrived at the table cold. Not a single individual who didn't finish their steak asked for a box to go. I've never seen more unfinished dishes in my life. I felt so bad for the waitress Now let's talk dessert. A majority of us ordered the Pretzel Bread Pudding (BP Squared). It lacked flavor for every element. I couldn't even tell you that they used Pretzel as an ingredient in the bread pudding. The Root Beer Marshmallow was one of the worst things I've ever eaten. Not a single one of us ate both of their marshmallows. Disgusting! Again there were a ton of elements on the plate and nothing paired or complemented each other. Take my advice and avoid this restaurant. They plate their dishes well and they are visually appealing. The photos online do look great, however the taste doesn't even come close to matching. This restaurant needs to learn that less is more. Every dish is muddled and extremely confusing. Focus on flavor and reduce the number ingredients on your dishes and you might actually create a successful dish. They have a lot to learn given this pretentious menu. This was simply the worst restaurant meal I've ever had and I've been to some pretty terrible restaurants across the country. At least the other restaurants weren't this overpriced. read more

Ember is very expensive but very good. The service is good and food gets to you fast. The place is clean and doesnt have the party bar feel that a lot of places have. I like that I can go out and relax and have a more relaxing night. Just know you will spend a pretty penny but its worth it. read more

My wife and I ate at Ember last night and left completely impressed. We had the soup and the scallops for appetizers, wagyu beef and venison rack entrees, and blueberry pie and bread pudding desserts. Every single bite was excellent: great flavors and perfectly cooked. Portion sizes are perfect. It's been a long time since I've felt I got a great value from a restaurant but Ember knocks it out of the park. For the price I don't think you'll find a better meal. Our cocktails were good, and wine was very fairly priced. Our two servers were really friendly. It's a nice, quiet restaurant, not a place I would bring kids to. Overall a great experience: great food and service at a very good price. read more
