The guacamole was fresh and simple preparation of perfect avocado. The chips were actually fried corn tortillas which were excellent. I had the skirt steak. It was tender and perfectly cooked and even though rare it came to the table still warm. Another excellent salsa. It was accompanied by a salad of sautéed onions (scallions and shallots at least). We also had the dish tacos which were full with a very light batter almost tempera like . The portion was ample. The classic margaritas were well made. Empellon was suggested as a good spot for a work lunch, and it is! I was initially intimidated by the prix fixe menu because of the amount of food, but you are able to order a la carte. We started with the guacamole that comes with five different salsas - I had never mixed and experimented with so many salsas but they really do allow you to put your own twist on the guacamole. I ordered the steak tacos which were solid. The tortillas were thinner and far more delicate than I expected - they fell apart before I even picked them up so ended up having to eat them with a knife and fork. (gasp!) Reservations are a must as it gets packed for lunch. We had an early reservation at 11:30a and, as I was leaving at around 12:30, the restaurant was 100% full. The restaurant has a relatively spacious feel given that it is quite compact (probably because of the high ceilings). There are a limited number of outdoor tables. read more

This place used to be known for its great tacos. Well, we there for lunch and the two (!! - not three) tacos we got were abysmal. And cost $24. That's not even the worst part. The worst part is that I ended up with absolutely terrible food poisoning after visiting the restaurant and I have no doubt in my mind that it was caused by the $33 lobster salad I ate. The service was not good either, they kept on asking whether they can collect the plates while we were still eating our tiny portions. The ambiance is also very 'corporate like' and you will hear everything the table next to you is saying. Therefore, not a great place for a business lunch either. I will never visit this restaurant again and it's a shame it's gone so much downhill in such a short time. read more

It's surprising when restaurants nail the food and then get everything else wrong. I feel this warrants some feedback. The food was 5star and the experience was 1star. If you go here make sure you sit upstairs because downstairs is just too noisy. An overwhelming number of men in suits just standing around cursing and drinking. Bumping into your table. And this was on Wednesday, can't imagine another day of the week. Is it always like this or was there a private event? Because it's so noisy why use giant Cheesecake Factory sized tables downstairs? Creates less space and there is no chance you can talk to the person across from you without yelling. I feel using small tables downstairs will help a lot. There was a large party sitting next to us and you can see they could only talk to the people seated adjacent to them. They completely gave up on trying to talk across the table. The art is strange. We were sitting next to a sculpture of a rooster with tits laying in a kinda sexual pose. I don't mind the sculpture but it's an odd choice for a restaurant. Anyways it gave us a laugh so maybe it's a good thing. And finally our server lectured me about ordering a drink from someone who was not him, and because I did that, he has no idea where my drink is and it may never show up. Bizarre to get this lecture at a fine dining restaurant. But damn the drink was so good. Again I should emphasize the food and drinks were 5star and I'm sure the upstairs experience is more pleasant. While the food and service are certainly more upscale than his downtown establishments, the flavors are every bit as bold and creative. Having lived in San Diego for 4 years, it's difficult to get Mexican food anywhere else. Decided to give Empellon a try and it was a pleasant surprise! Granted, it's definitely given a more "modern" touch here and dishes are crafted with the utmost precision. It seemed everyone had started with the seven salsa appetizer, and it was highly recommended, so we decided to go for that one too. The seven salsas are arranged so that the spice levels increase as you keep going. My favourite was the first one: a cashew cream that was so creamy, with a hint of smokeyness to it. This with the guac together was perfection! The chips were also refilled and we just couldn't stop eating them and adding all the different sauces to it. I'd recommend taking it slow with the chips, especially since we had lots of food coming and were a bit full from the chips! For others, we got the jumbo prawn fajitas, fish tacos, and an asparagus special of the evening. The white asparagus, as explained to us, was grown completely in the darkness (no photosynthesis, no chlorophyll). The texture was really great, and was a light dish in comparison to the heavier foods that were to come. Fish tacos were great as you'd expect, though I personally added a few more sauces from our appetizer onto it for just a little more "zing." We were getting quite full at this point, but each decided to try a fajita - six pieces of tortilla come with it, and you make it yourself. The juices of the dish were so well blended in, but we weren't expecting it to be quite spicy! I really did like that though, and brought the rest home since we were full, but it was even better the next day given that the flavour had all soaked in at this point. For dessert, we just had to try the avocado ice cream. The presentation is flawless - it really looks like an avocado even in real life when it's in front of you. I couldn't really tell what the flavour was really, just that it was a mousse like texture and melted instantly. I finally came here for lunch one day with a colleague after wanting to visit for some time. I was not that impressed and found it to be extremely overpriced for what it is. My guess is that most people coming here come for business lunches and so they don't care because they're not paying out of pocket. Also the service was not very good. It took a long time to be acknowledged, and the person who brought us our beverages went to 3 tables before he realized it was our order. For food: We weren't that hungry so we didn't go with their pre-set lunch menu, and instead we ordered guac and tacos. $21 for guacamole of this size is probably one of the most, if not the most, expensive guacamole I've had in the city, and it wasn't anything special, just avocado and white onion with some cilantro. Now to be fair, the 7 salsas that come with the guacamole is pretty neat, and they all tasted unique and offered nice kicks, but I'm still not sure if this was worth it . I chose the skirt steak tacos, which although very good, $20 for 2 tacos that are not that big is just ridiculous. If these were the best tacos I had eaten then that's one thing, but they weren't. Apparently, the only tacos that are not gluten free are the fish tempura tacos. I'm just not sold on this place - maybe I'd come back when someone else is picking up the tab, but it did not do anything to draw me back for the price. read more

I've only been to Empellon once, but thought the food was pretty unique. This is a vegetarian review and I haven't tried any of the tacos or meat-based mains. I shared the guacamole with seven salsas and ordered the pumpkin seed cappelletti. I loved the concept where you could pair different salsas with the chips and guac since the salsas have all sorts of flavor profiles and range from non-spicy to decently spicy. I thought the pumpkin seed cappelletti, although I haven't tried anything like it previously, was overall too salty. I appreciate that there was at least one vegetarian option in every category (tacos, mains, starters, etc.) I recognize that Empellon is meant to have a cool ambiance with the dim lighting, but main dining area was so loud that it was difficult to have a conversation. Although I won't be frequenting, I think Empellon would be worth a try. read more

I came to Empellon today for lunch. I had low expectations just from some of the reviews I read on here but I was pleasantly surprised. Restaurant has nice decor, very bright. We sat upstairs. Service was good. We did the $38 prixe fixe menu and also shared crab nachos. Crab nachos were delicious. From the fixed menu I tried the cabbage salad which was great and big and then the fish tacos as my main which was also very tasty and a big portion. I probably didn't need dessert since I was so full but I had the flan which was the perfect small portion. All of the food was very interesting and the presentation was very good. I enjoyed the meal but it wasn't cheap - luckily I was there for work on the company's dime. $32 for nachos and $20 for two tacos with no sides is a bit pricy for my wallet! Would recommend for a business meal though. read more

Now let me tell you. I was taken here to celebrate Sojvember aka my birthday month and baby hit the nail on the head. I stepped outside of my comfort zone a bit and loved the fact that I was rewarded with one of the best dinners I've had in a while. I'm not typically a tequila or mezcal kinda gal but "when in Rome", you feel me, & I'm so happy I went with it because the Pomegranate Margarita was fantastic. Strong yet subtly sweet. Two of those baby's & all was well in my world. For starters we had the Guacamole with 7 Salsas. Neither of us eat guac (although it did look visually stunning) but the salsas were where the party was. I tried all 7 and the 5th & 6th towards the end (the spicier end) were my favorite. Asked for those badboys to go lol. I guarantee out of the 7, everyone will find at least one that they like. Then we had the fish tempura tacos. I'm typically not a Fish Taco person (you see a pattern here right lol) but babyyyy these tacos. Unfortunately, a lot of restaurants in NYC, forgot the basic art of seasoning their food, but this establishment did not. The fish itself with seasoned, the tempura batter was seasoned and the tartar sauce, and accompanying salsa was out of this world. Then, we had the Steak Fajitas. I don't typically order steak at a Mexican restaurant, but as soon as I sat down & made a comment to our waiter about how good a dish smelled, he let me know I was smelling that fajita. I knew it'd be seeing me. We asked for a medium cooked and got JUST that and again, SEASONED. I saw the flaky salt adorned on the steak as the smoke sizzled, and it's accompanied with a squeeze a fresh lime juice right on top. Nuff said. Lastly, we finished it out with the Apple Confit. You break a chocolate candy ball to be met with vanilla ice cream and caramel over a bed of apple almost gelatin bites. This place will be seeing me again. Popular Midtown HH spot with creative modern Mexican fusion bar food and exceptional molecular gastronomy desserts. We had: - Crab and uni nachos - very tasty and light as far as nachos go. I've never seen this dish anywhere else and it's shocking that it hasn't gone viral given how good (and easy to make?) it is. Great for sharing or to hog for yourself. - tempura fish tacos, came with two - pretty substantial pieces of fried fish tempura. Solidly good and filling bar food though I wouldn't say the best fish tacos I've ever had. - cocktails were a bit on the sour/bitter side for me personally. I guess to complement the food? I would have preferred slightly more subtle sourness. - avocado dessert which is a dish made to look exactly like a real avocado half, with the exact same texture, consistency, and color. Even had a spray painted on black shell. Came on a bed of granitas and salt. Was not too sweet, a bit like a toned down slightly avocado-y key lime pie. - the standout dish was the Banana dessert, which looks like a stick of butter on blackened banana peel and tasted like... something banana-y that's incredibly delicious and I can't quite describe. I don't know where their dessert chef came from but I don't think I've had a dessert this good outside of Michelin 3-star restaurants. (Edit: googled to find out that chef Alex Stupak used to be pastry chef at Alinea and WD-50.. so actually spot on) The desserts will set you back about $17 each but they are really unique and IMO worth trying. My favorite of the three was the smoked black cod with a potato-chorizo vinaigrette--a delicious combo I haven't tried before. The shishito peppers were actually a good size--but for $17, that felt like a stretch to me. As for the skirt steak, the six pieces wouldn't suffice as a stand-alone meal for many individuals (perhaps Empellón expects everyone to order appetizers)--and the onions seemed to overpower the dish. We could have ordered more food but didn't necessarily feel in the mood to spend more. I went to a pre-show dinner at Empellon with my husband and another couple a week or so ago, and it was a disappointment. We shared: guacamole with seven salsas; crab nachos with sea urchin "queso"; roasted shishito peppers with lime vinaigrette; carrots with coconut crema and spicy coriander oil; lobster tacos with potatoes and dark chile paste; ground dry aged beef picadillo with a crunchy taco shell and Vermont cheddar blend; and their classic dessert - the avocado that isn't an avocado (lime raspado and eucalyptus yogurt). A few of the things we ordered were fine, but none were great and some weren't very good at all. The seven salsas that came with the guacamole - some of them were too sweet for me, which was strange. The crab nachos were a total disappointment, especially because it was over $30; they were dry and bland and mostly just dry chips and crab that seemed dried out with a tasteless "queso." The carrots were undercooked, which I would be okay with if they weren't also underseasoned and bland. The tacos were okay - nothing to write home about, but better than most of the dishes we had. I would say the only things I enjoyed and would consider ordering again were the shishito peppers and the avocado. I also ordered the pumpkin seed cappelletti with achiote and honey nut squash juice which I was really looking forward to, but it never arrived, so I just told them to make sure it wasn't on the bill. The service was also pretty bad. Our server barely spoke to us. I had to start waving to get his attention because he wasn't stopping by to check on us even though they weren't busy (I need to ask for more chips, to add something to our order, and to ask for our check since we were going to a show and he hadn't come by in so long he didn't know we hadn't received our last dish). They also brought me the wrong wine (easily corrected) and forgot one of our dishes. But our server was not just helpful or friendly. The space is nice, and the location was convenient for a show after dinner. But that's really all I can say that was positive about our meal. I didn't enjoy the food or the service, and I would not return based on this experience. Came in for dinner with a visiting friend on a Saturday who is obsessed with the cookbook. Midtown Corporate dinner spot so it was unsurprisingly pretty empty for a Saturday night. The staff was extremely attentive and helpful. We ordered the crab nachos, smoked black cod, fish tempura, picadillo taco and the skirt steak. The apps were pretty good and we were pretty full from the nachos and black cod alone. I wouldn't skimp on the apps. To be honest, the tacos were unmemorable and pretty meh. The steak was pretty solid but we were pretty full by the time they came around. The drinks were very good. The saffron margarita is not to be missed. The restaurant is beautiful though, I love the clay art pieces they have on the first floor -both beautiful and grotesque. My aunt and I started at the bar with a spicy cucumber margarita and a variation on a Manhattan with tequila. The bartender recommended the por que no, si we tried that next and it was divine. Once we sat for dinner we had the salsa sampler, a baked clam special, the steak fajitas and the crab nachos to share and all were amazing. Took a visit to empellon for restaurant week. I love mexican food so I wanted to give it a shot. Mexican is such an approachable cuisine there is always a bit of sticker shock to the prices for high end tacos. Cocktails start at $18. Apps at $14 Entrees go up to $42. In Empellons defense everything I had was good. And all of my pals agreed. Everything we were served was delicious. Every dish is packed with flavor. The steak tacos packed quite a punch. Fresh corn tortillas and served piping hot. The Salmon Tartare with fish roe was subtle and well developed. The dessert was good, I think, it was a chocolate flan and it was really chocolaty but I personally not a chocolate fan. Service was good and I loved the 2 tiered lay out. It was a nice meal too pricey to make a habit but definitely delicious. And a notch up from typical mexican restaurants in the city. read more

This is a two story Beehive anchored by an open kitchen where you can watch the crew mad dancing like a Bolshoi rehearsal. Make a sign at home and hold it over your head asking for the Bar Menu and hope for the best. The decor compliments the space. Pendant fixtures drip a low light glow on the show and the earthy tones if you came for the feel in addition to the food. (Me? I can enjoy a real feel at my own crib. I'm here now for the chow). This kitchen sink arrived in a tall glass with a metal straw. The management wants to save the environment and help you relive your 21st in some dark Tiki Bar at the same time. This bad ass drink was as strong as an Inca Trail Porter. It was a Vermouthy Sangria-esq cleanse even though it had nothing to do with either and was a perfect first round to pair with the bar bites. (Which are better than Porter bites.) After that I tried the Living Still Life. Good thing I'm still living to write about it. Leopold New York Apple Whiskey, Fino Sherry, Egg Whites, and Lemon all mixed up together. It was total refreshment and with the extra wide steel straw you can really get a super suck to gin up the festivities or stroll downstairs and blend your bender into the blender. The Food: Ahora estamos hablando! Who woulda thunk that Tailgate Take-a-Way or a Baby Shower Brunch Buffet could be elevated to such lofty heights? But here it is. The Latin (nee Mexican) feast awaiting you will turn a Frat Party into a Tails and Gowns Pinky extended soiree. Crab Nachos with Uni had loads of Crab and nodes of Uni. Caveat: Like all things that have a Nacho in it, eat like a hungry Hamster as the chips go limp quick. (Any Donald And Stormy reference is purely coincidental.) The thin slices of Jalapeno gave it a last trimester baby kick of heat. Nice dish, this. The Queso Fundido had Steak Tartare (although I didn't find it), and chopped Cornuts. (I found all of those). Wowser, this was addictive. With house made steamin' hot Tortillas, Salsas it was truly terrific. Melted Cheese and chrunchy things, it had all my favorite food groups in a bowl. Caveat: Eat it fast before your companions discover how damn good it really is. The Sticky Rice Tamal with Red Chili Duck was not a dish to duck. Go out of your way to have it. The brick of Sauced Rice was forearm thick and as dense as Pence. Wildly delicious. The Chopped Cabbage Salad with Roasted Fava Bean Dressing came as a perfectly formed disk the size of a Frisbee. Too pretty to eat, I ate it. This was a Master Class of all chopped salads, The Cabbage was crisp and the perky creamy dressing will eliminate any stressing over if ordering it was the right choice. Here my voice. You chose wisely. A brace of Tacos rounded out the meal and my belly. The kitchen ain't stingy, either. Saucer sized tacos (two to an order) were generous to say the least. The Rueben Taco had a pile of lean Pastrami with Kraut, Whole Grain Mustard, and Melted White Cheddar. Think J-Lo does Netanyahu. The Tempura Fish Tacos were way better than anything you'll get at Mikawa, Tokyo's Temple of Tempura. The added Slaw and Salsa were wonderful and the coating was so crunchy I'm gonna have to have my crowns checked. The Falafel made me falafeel good. Jerusalem hits Jalisco. If this restaurant was in LA it would take 60 days to snag a table. Wait a minute, it took 60 days to snag this table in New York, and rightfully so. Make the effort. Everything here is just ok. Nothing great, nothing terrible. For the price, we expected a lot better. First off, the margaritas are not good. They taste like they use a cheap mix vs. fresh ingredients. Also, they do not know how to make a spicy drink; we ordered several versions and asked for extra spicy ones, which turned out incredibly mild. In terms of food, the guacamole and dips is a fun idea, but the salsas were just mediocre. Nothing really blew us away. One even tasted like ketchup, and not in a good way. I would bypass the tacos overall, except for the fish taco, which was the best thing we had that night. The mushroom taco tasted like tomato sauce with little flavor, and the pastrami taco needed something, so we added the mustard salsa from the dips which made it decent. The steak fajita is a platter of ribeye with very little that's interesting or new. In addition to disappointing food, the service was very sporadic. At one point, I waited over 30 minutes for my drink, and we were finished with dinner when I finally got it which was frustrating. Just overall a disappointment, especially for my birthday dinner. Rare high end Mexican food place near my home. I really enjoy their cocktails and guac. I always go back for their avocado dessert. The only sad thing is that their portions are often too big for me so theres very few dishes i could order each time i go. read more

I came here for a company event. Our manager had chosen the place for a team dinner outing. We had ordered a bunch of different appetizers that was perfect for our group size so that I didn't have to think about what to order. Everything tasted amazing and no matter how full we were we still had extra room for dessert, an avocado shaped key lime pie. The service was just as great, we were checked in on regular basis and our water was always full. Can't wait to come back. read more
