YEEEHAWWW yet another place with Oatly oat milk!! (I went when the shortage was around its start peak time so I'm not sure if they still have it in stock) I run Lake Merritt quite often. What do you want most after a good ol' morning pavement pounding? An iced oat milk latte!! The latte was really good!! Nice and bold while still being super smooth and not bitter at all!! AND THEY HAD OATLY!! So many places have been out of that specific brand of oat milk due to a shortage and Oatly not opening their new factory till March 2019 :( THE BRAND REALLY DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE HERE. Once you've had Oatly, it's like you can't even drink other cow juice alternatives anymore...it's that life changing friends The workers are super friendly!! I had asked about how long it would take for my drink to come out (bc when you're a college student training for a marathon you gotta sandwich a 10 mile run in between two classes you can't skip and you see that a place has Oatly and you jump on the opportunity bc getting your fix is sometimes very difficult bc you never know when and where you're gonna find Oatly again and also bc sleep deprived), and my drink was basically out by the time I had finished paying WOW Bottom line: Such a cute location!! It's an outdoor coffee shop. There are string lights and succulents and a bunch of cutesy decor!! It's also right next to Urban Remedy and across the street from Whole Foods. I really love Equator Coffee! Their medium/dark equator batch brew is where it's at. I live nearby and like to grab a cup on the weekends for a walk around Lake Merritt with my doggo. There's a cute little patio area where you can sit and enjoy your coffee and/delicious food offerings. They have dog treats up at the counter and typically can see a dog or two lounging with their coffee drinking humans. Notable that they have creamer, milk (think it might be... fat free?), and almond milk options at the counter! Great coffee. You pay for it, but it's really good. The bay area is so saturated with coffee shops that I suppose in order to get into the market, good coffee has to distinguish itself. Equator distinguishes itself from other coffee around the Bay Area by it's sustainable and fair trade philosophy. I opted for the 12 ounce pour over which was $4.50. I was disgruntled after ordering the coffee, but once I sat down and drank, I was blown away by the raw flavor. I didn't need any cream or sugar (I literally never drink black coffee, never). Might stop by again for a short pour-over or Americano, but be prepared to pay for what you get here, which is a lot. read more

A few weekends ago, I did a halfhearted run around Lake Merritt before calling it quits and getting some pizza at Whole Foods. I was just about to start the journey back to my car when I did a double take and noticed the cargo container turned into coffee shop that is Equator Coffees. A friendly couple who were waiting for their drinks gave a glowing review for Equator's coffees and said they were regulars here. However, the only way to order is through the app. They did a fantastic job of convincing us because I immediately downloaded the app, created an account and ordered a Matcha Shakerato (matcha green tea, vanillla syrup, heavy cream) and Rooibos Chai Latte (Rooibos = caffeine free). The matcha was good but did seem like something I could've easily made at home. The chai was great. Not overly sweet like Starbucks and with a great balance of spices. I give Equator props for going app-only for their orders. While it's a bit more work, it does solve any issues with queuing up to order and greatly limits contact between you and the cashier. For now, the app stays on my phone. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying some pour over coffee. read more

Made my way to this cute, outdoor coffee spot with some friends while visiting the Bay over the holidays. We walked over from my friend's house, but I can imagine parking would be tough since it's near Lake Merritt. Their outdoor seating area is really nice with lovely succulents on the tables; great for pets! I ordered their London Fog and shared the veggie quiche with my friend. The quiche was delicious! Tried this coffee shop multiple times and recently I ordered the classic shakerato. It's a pretty small drink of espresso shaken with cream and it's great if you need a quick caffeine fix. The house made vanilla latte was just alright as well as the latte. I am still a fan of their canned cold latte and I tend to grab a can whenever I am heading to Wholefoods. The design of the whole place is great from the shop itself to the tables consisting of various succulents in the middle. What an amazing little café! It's a container café with a beautiful outdoor deck! The tables are so cute! I love the succulents that adorn the tables! This café roasts their coffee locally and they are women-owned. I can't wait to make this my regular spot! I ordered a pour over of their organic Ethiopia and I love it! It was so fruit-forward! This place does an oat milk latte right. The people are friendly and the physical store is a hipster shipping container. The downside is that it's only outdoor seating, so some bugs might land on your face. But other than that, I managed to enjoy my latte and study for a good few hours, since they provide wifi. I can't wait to be back, it's just in a crowded area so it's hard to park sometimes. read more

I am a big fan of Equator Coffees in general and this location is a real gem! It's perfectly situated by Lake Merritt and has quickly become my regular stop when going for a walk around the lake or having a picnic during the day. My go-to order is their cold brew which is always delicious and is very well balanced. I've also had the matcha latte a couple of times. It's excellent. The matcha flavor really comes through and--importantly--it's not too sweet. There has always been at least one other person ordering or in line when I've been the last few months, but they do a GREAT job with social distancing. All ordering and pick ups are handled outside so it feels super safe and organized. I can't recommend it enough! read more

I have had a hard time finding a coffee shop that I absolutely love, since the Blue Bottle on Webster Street closed down. I genuinely thought that this might be my new love. NOT !!!!!! Their coffee is just "ok" and the service is not consistent. I have been coming here for over a month. Sometimes, I receive my pourover in a timely 5-7 minutes. Sometimes it can take 20 plus minutes like today. I watched people come and go, but no coffee for me. Then I saw a couple complain they they did not receive their coffee. A barista gave them their coffee and then I heard her say to make another "Ethiopian pour over". At that point I still had to wait another 5-6 minutes for my pour over. There was no acknowledgment that they made a mistake. Like I didn't have to get to work. I did have to get to work and I was late !!!!!! This is not the first time this has happened. I watched a homeless man get better service and I think he got his coffer for free. But I had to pay $5.75 for coffee that took more than 20 minutes. I guess I will have to keep searching for a coffee shop that I love read more

Exceptionally friendly staff providing exceptional coffee. Didn't catch either of the baristas names but they were both sociable and projected a warm personality. Because of this our experience at this Equator was even more enjoyable. The seating is really unique where it is solely outdoors with a long table. Above is a heat lamp so you don't have to be concerned with being cold. The table features a continuous center piece of succulents that compliment the Bay Area vibe. I really really want to like this place. The setting is so cute with the outdoor seating and is super convenient (right next to my gym, Pacific Strength.) But they just seem to drop the ball on several key things. - They are supposed to open at 6am on weekdays. At least a quarter of the time, I notice (I usually workout until 630), the opening employee doesn't show up or is late. I think they eventually open, but they lose my business because I've already left the area. - The coffee is really good and I LOVE that they have the option of fresh cashew milk from Urban Remedy, but they are SO SLOW!!!! I will be the only person who's ordered a drink and it takes at least five minutes to get my coffee. I know five minutes does not sound like a lot of time, but when I can order ahead from my mobile device at popular chain coffee stores...peets and starbucks ahem, five minutes is extra time in the morning. Just sayin... - The prices are also pretty steep for what you get... I really hope they can step up their game. read more

So I've never tried crack, but there is no way that it's stronger than equator coffee... as a night shift nurse, I appreciate a caffeinated beverage and am happy if it tastes even halfway decent... BUT EQUATOR IS SO GOOD and gets me through my crazy 12 hour shifts!! The habibi is amazing, but as a lover of all things ginger, the evergreen coffee is my absolute go to. Every week I grab a coffee and walk the lake and for that 15-30 minutes sipping my coffee, I almost forget that we are in a pandemic and that everything sucks! The place is quite small, very cute. The baristas are super nice and enthusiastic, which I love. If you're feeling hungry, TRY THE VEGGIE QUICHE!! I'll admit, my assumption was that because it was coffee shop food, it would be dry and sad.. I was SO wrong. I have a pretty sincere morning cappuccino habit. I feel like I tithe to various 3rd-wave coffee shops each month, thus I speak with a decent amount of well-earned authority on the subject. A new relationship has by proxy led me to Equator several mornings a week. The coffee quality and barista skill is pretty high. The setting is cute, with a number of de riguer aesthetic cues (succulents, large sans fonts, shipping containers). The food is average to slightly below (pastries, mostly, with a few middling more substantial options). My problem: it is hands down, with the possible exception of Ritual, circa 2008, the SLOWEST cafe in recent memory. A drink that takes about 25 seconds at Blue Bottle takes like 5 minutes for some inexplicable reason. It's uncanny, and sincerely aggravating. What's especially galling is that it seems to just be the general lethargy of the baristas; their sloth-like somnolence. They're not chatting too much or playing with their phones--they're merely intrinsically slow. read more

Excellent dark roast coffee!! The first time I had Equator Coffee was at Stanford Court in the city. It was rich and not bitter like some of the other dark roasts that I have tried. It took me 7 months before I realized how close this place was! After driving past one day I came back the following week with my parents who were visiting and another time to bring my brother. Both times I had the batch brew dark roast. My brother ordered a Cortado that wasn't on their menu and boy was it delicious. It was creamy and rich unlike the one we tried at Fifty Fifty in the city. I had such high expectations because of all the other positive reviews and also oatly oatmilk with anything would be amazing! Right? Nope, wrong. The coffee from the latte tasted sour and extremely bitter and left a weird aftertaste, it could be the oatmilk also but something about this latte wasn't right. I really wanted to love (not merely like) this place as it's walking distance from my house and I've loved Equator Coffee in Mill Valley. But this one is NOTHING compared to the MV experience: 1) The cashier girl(s) are constantly rude - like they hate life and have to work there. No smiles, no optimism about being there. It's a service industry, isn't it? But every time I've gone there, I've had to see the half-alive energy of the cashiers who take my order as if they're doing me a favor. You're the first face of your business and you give off an impression of "when can I go home"? No. Thanks. 2) The pastries are INSANELY overpriced for the quality - if you're actually making good pastries, fine, take my $5 (as apparently that's the normal cost of such items in SF). But if your croissants are stiff and burnt, do not make them in-house. Suck it up and buy it from Firebrand down the street. They know what they're doing, you don't. Stop selling your stale shit. 3) The pace - for a coffee spot, this place is INCREDIBLY SLOW. I've ran late to meetings because getting a coffee took 15 mins when it should have taken 5. I've visited the MV location for Equator and even with a long line of 10+ customers, they were able to get my order within a reasonable timeframe. You can make this location look as cute as you want, but if your service blows and the quality of your merch is subpar, how long do you suppose you'll last here? Bye. read more
