During our weekend stay in Catalina, we ate at Eric's three times; once for breakfast and twice for lunch. The first time we came here for lunch because we needed something fast, we were right on the pier, and it seemed pretty popular. We ordered a Clam Chowder in Bread Bowl and Fish 'n Chips ($20 total). The chowder was okay, kind of on the watery side, but I thought the bread bowl was pretty good 'cause it was soft. I definitely recommend the fish 'n chips; I loved how crispy they were on the outside but still juicy on the inside, and the tartar sauce that came with it was really yummy. The second time we came here was for a quick bite for breakfast. My boyfriend and I shared a breakfast burrito with machaca (shredded beef) and no beans (with tax, $10.11). It was so delicious, we came back for the same burrito again for lunch the same day! The reason why this place isn't 5 stars to me is because they're not open late. Most places in Avalon close early, and Eric's is no exception. They're a bit on the pricey side as well, but I'd definitely come back and I recommend coming here at least once to try their fish 'n chips and breakfast burritos. As is my usual routine in Catalina, the first thing I do when I step off the Catalina Express is search out where I'm going to get some decent Fish and Chips and Chowder! In the past, I've walked past Eric's and went down to the small place in the "tower" towards the end of Green Pier, but we decided to give Eric's a shot. It's always been pretty crowded in the past and this time was no different. We figured it might be good, with what seemed like a lot of locals munching down. Eric's did not disappoint; the Fish and Chips were excellent. Three nice sized pieces with just the right amount of breading on the outside so it didn't overwhelm the taste of the fish. The Clam Chowder was ok, but it had a bit too much celery for my liking. I am so disappointed!! I have been coming here for over 50 years and my parents came before me. There were certain traditions that we could count on every summer that we looked forward to. One was always making a beeline to Eric's for the classic hamburger and the other was the fish sandwich at Rosie's. Well, the classic Eric's burger is gone...disappeared ...poof! In its place is a disgusting, dry whole wheat bun nothing like the original. The original had a soft white texture which wa buttered and fried on the grill. Then came the mustard, lightly spread over each slice of bun, a perfectly salted (lightly) thin hamburger patty, chopped onions and chopped dill pickles...just the right amount! I would always try to duplicate it at home, but it was never as good. Eric's needs to bring back the classic! They can keep the others on the menu if they like, but please keep the classic for we purists! I live down the street from the "World Famous Jalama Burger. That burger is good, too and they have never changed a thing. It's what makes Jalama Beach a fun, special destination! . I am sure the current owners of Eric's think there food is fine, but the reviews suggest otherwise. Bring back tradition !! And while you are at it, tell Caleb to bring back the classic fish sandwich....ditch the whole wheat bun!! It's changed hands of course, and now has a better area to sit on (if you like barstools), and the menu's been significantly expanded to include some great Mexican choices. I love clam chowder & I definitely love it mute when it's in a bread bowl! These people make delicious clam chowder in a bread bowl & every bite of clam chowder has lots of clams in it. The bread bowl is $8.25 and of course a drink is around $3, but this place is worth it. Of course like all restaurants along piers, you have to wait a bit for a seat/table to become available. They also have and I quote "homemade" frozen bananas. Not sure why they quoted the homemade, but my bf tried it and loved it. I got the Good Humor chocolate cup cookie ice cream sandwich which was under $3 which is a steal. That treat can be pricey if you buy it at Rite Aid or Vons. Husband had the fish and chips it's panko crusted not buttered and had pastor tacos which were good but they only had red salsa. They also put onions and cilantro on them without letting you know just FYI (I hate raw onions lol). They've got bottled beer and beer on tap but you have to stay within a specific area to drink it. They have funnel cake that looked good but was kind of high priced imo so I didn't get it. They charge 50 cents to use a card so bring cash or deal with it. They do have water cups and free tap water which is a plus because most places charge for bottled water since the island is in a stage one conservation status. read more

Catalina Island and buffalo have gone hand in hand ever since they were introduced to the island decades ago. That's why when I come to a place selling buffalo burgers, I expect it to meet certain standards. A dry patty, pathetic toppings (pickles, mustard, and chopped onions), and plain white bread is what I got. I walked down the pier to Fish and Chips to see what some of my friends got, and their buffalo burger looked like something you can actually justify for $8. Juicy and big with premium toppings (wheat bun, mayo, lettuce... the works). I would give it less, but their pretty decent fries, and what looked to be acceptable-looking fish tacos kept it afloat. Now after ordering I noticed something strange...no one was actually eating! everyone seemed really pissed off! The Orange Juice I ordered was hotter than the sun, I chucked it after a couple of sips...we then found some shade away from the restaurant. I came back....10 mins later still no sign of the bacon sarnie. We got a table and noticed a lot of people frustrated around us. 30 mins after ordering, I was ready to throw in the towel. I looked into the kitchen and the chef was EATING his own breakfast! 45 mins after ordering, I finally had enough and went up and asked to cancel my order, I had been at this shack for an hour and eaten nothing. It was then he produced the most miserable looking sandwich I have ever seen! It was a crusty piece of bread with some old dried up fatty bacon attached. we both looked at it, and handed it back to him. I told him it to eat it himself and I would simply be writing a review! After reading this page I couldn't resist writing a review because no one has mentioned the enormously wonderful treat that resides in the walls of this small Avalon landmark:The Pier Burger! This heartattack between buns is the following: onions, lettuce, tomato, bacon, sliced hotdog, beef patty, mustard and catchup. Deliciousness. Topped off with some of their yummy seasoned fries and for some reason I get a kick out of their ice which is the crushed up chewable kind which makes a cold coke like a slushy. Perfect afternoon meal. Also, the location couldn't be better, you can have a drink if you stay within the white line and everyone loves service that includes yelling out a small window.
