Gah! Once again, I trusted a friend's recommendation over Yelp's (no offense to my friend!). I voted for Henry's but she voted for Eric's. I don't go out for Chinese food in SF often - it's one of those save-for-a-rainy-day-take-out type of things because let's be honest, nothing can compare to Grandma's cooking so why even bother. I got the crave and headed out to Noe. Ambiance and service wise, Eric's was great. They had your standard 5 waiters standing around, ready to re-fill your water the second you take a sip. Food was pretty average though. I tried the Shanghai chicken - not a normal dish for me - and I found it to be way too salty. I also didn't dig the green flakey things over real vegetables. Potstickers were above average and the sweet and sour soup was perfectly acceptable. All in all, if they delivered, I would add them into the rotation but since they don't, there's nothing pulling me back. read more

My boyf and his family are Noe Valley natives. When I came to visit them this weekend, they took me to their favorite and go to grub spot -- Eric's Restaurant. I must say...I was impressed. Mango Chicken (extra spicy) Eric's Fried Rice Drums of Heaven The extra spicy mango chicken was HEAVENLY DELISHHH. It wasn't exactly firey spicy like I enjoy, but it was tangy spicy and rich. Howeverrrr, it was loaded with jalapeno slices...and when you got a bite of that with your chicken...it was fire. And then, the mango complimented the spice to tame it down and give you a zesty flavor. BOOM. ultimate party in my mouth. -- Please do yourself the favor of ordering this dish. Eric's Fried Rice is also really good. It's loaded with all types of meat, but they warn you of that in advance. It is hands down my boyf's favorite fried rice in the whole entire world. So, to say it was anything less than perfection would be blasphemy. Drums of Heaven Unique fried chicken. They carry a punch but it is a unique flavor. Their dipping sauces are definitely awesome to try with the drum sticks. The more brown/orange dipping sauce is horse-radish-y, but beware, it's reaaaally potent and makes your eyes water (which I enjoy), but if you're not into that, just use sparingly. The other sauce is some sort of sweet and sour sauce. To be honest, I'm not sure if the sauces even compliment the taste of the drumsticks...but the drumsticks are awesome, the sauces are awesome, and together it's just a real party in your mouth. I have been a big fan of Eric's for years, but I've definitely noticed the quality of the food declining in the 2-3 years, and I've gone less and less. Each time it has gone down in quality. Tonight I ordered take-out and was extremely disappointed. The egg rolls were tasteless, the peapods were mushy and most tragic, the mu shu chickedn was served with FLOUR TORTILLAS?! Huh?! This was the first visit to Eric's for all four women in our party, and we all liked it, although I would say it is not strictly Chinese which is OK with me. If a chef wants to improve on or get creative with a cuisine, then go ahead if it tastes good. Maybe "fusion" is the latest buzz word. For instance, the appetizer sampler plate ($7.50) had Crab Meat Rangoon (cream cheese and crab in a won ton skin and fried) and that is not a typical Chinese recipe (maybe Burmese?). Tasted good, though. Another atypical thing for a Chinese restaurant...it was CLEAN! I wanted to try the large Sizzling Rice Soup ($8) so we could all try it, even though one of our party did not want soup. Well that changed when she saw it! It was full of vegetables, seafood, and of course the sizzling rice, so our friend changed her mind and was glad she did. Our group also ordered Mu-Shu Pork ($8.50), Asparagus Beef ($8.75), Beef with Green Peppers (lunch special...can't remember price), and the Hoisin String Beans ($7.50). It was a Friday at lunch time and not particularly busy, the service was good. It was not noisy, which facilitated conversation. Two hour street parking was easy to find. I came home last nite to my sister and her guy saying that they wanted Chinese food and that they were going to Eric's to pick up some food and would I like any. I was a little reluctant. I am having a pimple problem right now, and I didn't think that eating greasy Chinese food would be just what the dermatologist ordered. But, of course, I caved. Food over vanity. I had them bring me back something veggie. And they arrived with Asparagus in black bean sauce and veggie mu shu. I also had some of their hot and sour soup, since Eric's gave a gargantuan portion of it. The soup was pretty good! Great for a cold night, especially since we've been experiencing record lows. The asparagus was so-so. Nothing special, nothing to write home about. The mu shu was good. But as my dining companions noted, they were skimpy on the wraps. By the way, why is it that every Chinese restaurant is skimpy on the wraps? There's a TON of stuffing, but always like 4 wraps. Am I eating this wrong? Please let me know. This used to be an excellent restaurant, but it has become a sad factory of mediocre and standard dishes. A recent lunch was so bland that it really shocked me. The service was slow despite being only about 1/3 full and the server was rude. Then to have such boring and bland food was so disappointing. I used to eat here quite frequently and always enjoyed it. In fact, my first date with my husband was here 17 years ago, so I have very warm feelings for this place. Got their potstickers appetizer. There was hair on it. Sure, I was grossed out....but having worked in the restaurant industry....I get it, it happens. I sent it back, requesting a new one. My friend already laughed, saying: you know they'll take the hair off and send the same one out again. (I wished he wasn't right) Got the " new" potstickers and after eating half way through, I saw another hair. So, sadly, my friend was right. Stopped eating right there, didn't even tell the waiter anymore, because clearly, either he or the kitchen staff ignored my request. Chinese food is always a dice game, even in the most heralded, guilded of establishments-- Far too often, perfectly nice vegetables and meats are abused beyond recognition, covered in gluey sodium-ladened sauces, and plopped down on a bed of rice. Not only is that really boring, it's kind of gross. While Eric's is definitely guilty of this in some cases, there are a few things on the menu that are really tasty, very fresh, and wholly satisfying. I usually am pleased with at least one or two parts of the meal, even if the whole picture isn't a home run. Things to enjoy, even if you're not that into Chinese food: The vegetarian mu shu (A+), hot and sour soup (A-), and Eric's Spicy Eggplant (with chicken, shrimp, basil, and spicy sauce... usually an A, though sometimes it sinks to a B). Things to avoid: Chow Mein, anything with garlic sauce, the lemon chicken, weekends, the pinot grigio. read more

I have eaten here before with a friend or two... service has never been their strong point, in my opinion, but the food is tasty enough and I trust the chicken. I suppose take out would avoid the service issues. But on Christmas Eve, I was a solitary Jew in search of a quiet, Chinese-ish meal. I don't have any issues about dining out alone, but apparently the staff at Eric's would prefer I didn't. When I walked in, I stood at the front for a few minutes with no acknowledgment. There were not many diners, most of the tables were empty, but several folks were waiting off to the side for their take out. A couple entered, walked in front of me, and were immediately greeted and sat. I remained invisible. I caught a server's attention and the conversation went like this: Me: "Hi there: Him: "Can I help you?" Me: " Um, yeah, I was hoping to get a table" Him: "what do you want?" Me; "Well, to eat dinner" Him: "How many are you?" Me: "Just me" Him: "Only you? One? That's all?" He then asked if I would like to sit at the table in the back, where everyone was waiting for their take out. Eric's is a pretty small place, and we now were the center of attention. "Meh. I've experienced better." has never been so true. I was house hunting in the city with Mark and we ended up hanging out with my old roommate Sunshine/Moonshine the clown. She recommended that we have dinner at Eric's because it is Michelin rated. Yes, it's clean and beautiful. However, those are not the requirements for good Asian food that my mama/family taught: "Follow the Asian people." There wasn't a single one dining there that night. We should have went somewhere else, but we were ravenous. Hunger is supposed to make food taste better, but I don't think it flavored our food much. In fact, we had Mango Prawns, Kung Pao Chicken, and Buddha's Delight and Sunshine complained that they all tasted the same, because they were cooked in the same brown sauce. read more

Normally I don't eat Chinese food in neighborhoods where there isn't a lot of double parking but my non-Chinese-food-eating wife and I were in Noe Valley on New Years Day and we were hungry. I spied Eric's and remember reading that they had salads so I suggested it and to my surprise my wife agreed. My expectations weren't that high because salads on the menu and brown rice as an option usually equals food for guai los but I have to say I really enjoyed my lunch. The Hunan Lamb was excellent, very tender non-gamey lamb with peppers and leeks I just wish it had been spicier. Mrs. G's prawn salad was also very good and I don't often say that about salad. I spied several vegetarian options on the menu so this place is a posibility with non-meat-eating friends. Service was quick, attentive and friendly. One waiter in particular just doted on my nine month old daughter. I only had one dish, part of my New Year's regime of eating "lite" (Lite for me is still enough to feed a family of four normal people) but I look forward to going back and trying more things. Being a creature-ess of habit is genetic, I think. My proof? Every time my relatives come to visit, they always want to travel to my now faraway former Noe hood to have Eric's chinese food for dinner. So, it was with predictable certainty that we were the first party to arrive during a recent dinner hour, all eager for the treat. The chicken kew was delightful and our vegetarian dishes (my cousin developed a taste for rabbit food last year...so cute), were all perfectly spiced and tasty! And the chow mien...well, not a noodle was left on the plate. Our hostess/server even recommended that we try something new, like the avocado egg roll. It was amazing with its seaweedy special yummy sauce. We had a really hard time prying the last dregs of it from mum's determined grasp. Finally, our friendly server negotiated an exchange: the ceramic sauce container for a fresh batch that she could include with the leftovers. I've never seen mum so happy! We ordered (mushu) with prawns, it looks like a burrito! The waitress rolls it at the table, and serves you! I can't believe how delicious this was. Horrible customer service. Placed our name on a wait list with an understanding that there were several people ahead of us and it was Christmas. After an hour and fifteen minutes, I kept seeing others come in a get sat immediately with a party the same size as us which were not on the wait list (because I kept checking to see how far we were on the list- and we were second on the list with a bigger party for awhile). When I inquired, the workers acted like I wasn't addressing them, they acted like they hadn't heard me or didn't speak English and carried on with their task. About four times of trying to get an answer regarding how much longer, or if they may have forgotten about us, I asked again and the woman tried to ignore me again but I made it clear what I was asking and she finally at least game me an answer- she said, " I don't know." This answer would have been okay if the first person had said this, except they had terrible communication. We ended up leaving because no one could let us know exactly what was going on or whether we'd be served at all. The groups waiting had turned over several times and we were the original group left standing. Food smelled good, but I'll never know because I wouldn't go back based solely on the lack of communication and poor people skills among the staff. read more

Vegetarians rejoice! They now offer four meatless (mock) chicken dishes, located under the "Vegetable" section of the menu. From what I've been told by the staff, this was something they just put on the menu as of recent - it was a pleasant surprise to see. So if you're over the plain tofu and vegetable thing, now there are more options. I eagerly ordered the General Tsao Meatless Chicken and wasn't disappointed. Fresh, delicious broccoli surrounded a mound of mock chicken in a spicy sauce. The verdict? Mmmm mmmm good. Even my carnivore dining companion found it tasty. Big Lantern and Emmy's has a larger selection of mock meat dishes, but I don't think either restaurant can match the service and settings of Eric's (which hasn't changed much over the years - a good thing). read more

Having just watched Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations "China" episode, I had a hankering for Chinese food. Grey Cloud is currently staying with us and M. and I talked him into Eric's after he declared, "I don't want some crappy MSG joint with shrines." Okay. Eric's is great and I was delighted to find there was no wait. They have cheap wines, good apps, and I'm a fan of the 5 taste chicken. The mongolian beef was a little dry on my last visit, and what they regard as "spicy" wasn't that hot. But it's always immaculate, it's in a cute little hood with lots of parking, the food is fresh and everyone's nice. It ain't Tommy Toys. And there's often a wait. Good lawdy, that is cheaper than fast food, and nearly as fast. I really like Eric's chow mein, which looks nothing like traditional chow mein. There are so many vegetables in it, I thought that I got the wrong order when I opened my takeout boxes. But I really liked their spin on what is usually a dish of low nutritional value. When I tip the server for togo food, she acts surprised, which makes me sad for her. This leads me to believe that no one else tips her on the reg. Tip her, dammit! read more

Once upon a time Eric's had been our favorite Chinese restaurant in the city -- but ever since the rodent and sanitation scare of March 2008 (when it scored a lowly 56 on SFScores.com) we made ourselves scarce. There were too many restaurants almost as good with a 90-100 score sans the mouse poop. But we couldn't stay away forever. Eric's SFScore gradually increased and the General's Chicken and the potato pancakes beckoned. While I can't vouch for the authenticity of the food, it sure is yummy. We started of course with Eric's pancakes, dressed with a peanuty garnish that tasted much better than it looked. Next came the Rainbow Fish, a colorful concoction of diced cod swimming in a sea of red, green and yellow sweet peppers and drenched in a flavorful garlic broth. And finally, instead of the General's Chicken, we opted for the slightly more healthy Sesame Chicken sitting on a bed of zuchini and carrots with the occasional celery stick. It did not disappoint. If anything was weak it was the brown rice, which clumped together a little to easily as if it had been in the cooker way too long. All in all, I'm happy we gave it a try. I'd be happier still if they posted their SFScore in a more prominent location (like the window) and had more frequent inspections (the last one was mid 2009)... but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. It sure beats our local haunt, King Wah in Daly City, which we grudgingly patronize despite the shark fin soup on the menu. read more

Well, it's not really Chinese food at Eric's. It's Chinese-American food. But that having been said, it was pretty tasty Chinese-American food! And surprisingly crowded at 3:45 pm, although it was a holiday weekend...of course, I *did* notice that we were the only Chinese (or even asian) table. We had four dishes: 1. Eric's special spicy eggplant dish (quite tasty with chicken, shrimp, and peppers in a brown sauce) 2. Vegetarian delight (good portion and variety of veggies in a cornstarch sauce) 3. Szechuan chicken (which actually was chicken with pinenuts and seaweed in a brown sauce, which didn't strike me as being particularly szechuan, but I enjoyed it anyway) 4. Scene One: My husband and I have gone to Erick's for many years, but now we will NEVER MORE. Our take out meal tonight for the two of us, at about $50.00, was marginally okay. But my love of Wor Wonton soup had turned to rip us off, Though not on the menu, they have made wor wonton for me in varying degrees of tastiness. until tonight's surprise which is so bad I am yelping it. I feel very used. Wor means 'every' it is a meal unto itself, a virtual stew as soup. What I bought was nothing close. Save your money by not going here.Too bad, We've had good times here dining friends. I called Eric's letting them know how displeased I am and would never patron them again. They're answer was to hang up. Scene Two: I giave one of my two orders of Wor Wonton soup to a friend saying how disappointed I am and for him to check it out for himself (and for me too). He tells me about two other friends who also experienced Eric's decline. Epilogue: Well the ambiance is still there but the food is somewhere else. I'm augmenting my review to say Esther called me and demonstrated sincerely their desire to make good and to improve.. Honestly, Eric's has been a favorite for a long time, but I hadn't been spending much time in that neighborhood in the last few years. The other night, it was Chinese New Year weekend and I decided that I really did want some good Chinese food for dinner. It's a unique Chinese restaurant in that the walls are white, it's got a ton of orchids everywhere and there is zero tacky cliche ethnic decorating. I enjoy being there. We had beef and snow peas, pot stickers and honey walnut prawns with white rice. It was delicious, and we felt really good when we left. My only complaint was that they ran out of tea, so no tea...which is pretty funny at a Chinese restaurant. I guess it was a very busy weekend with it being their holiday and all. The staff was very nice and attentive although it was packed. There was almost a line out the door for their take out. Again, I think part of that was owed to the holiday. They also have a nice lunch special menu, but their prices are super reasonable to begin with. read more

I think I found a loophole in my "no Americanized Chinese food" rule: if it's actually *California-ized* Chinese food, it's ok. Mostly this is semantic BS to allow me to get my occasional deep-fried-meat-in-syrup fix, but there is a grain of truth to it. As many other reviewers point out, there's something surprisingly light and fresh about Eric's food, while still satisfying your sinful cravings (case in point: the walnut prawns). The Shanghai Tofu is also a highlight, as are the masterfully grilled pot stickers. Sadly, I haven't been to Alice's or Eliza's, so I can't contribute to the Nicaean debate regarding the consubstantiality of this Chinese trinity. But Eric's is pretty decent judged on its own merits. I like efficient service, but it was a little *too* business-like here. The decor, by day, looks very dainty and fitting for Noe Valley, but at night they light up the big 'ol neon sign, and the lights inside are a bit too bright and they make the high, unfinished ceiling more noticeable. So my recommendation would be to come for lunch. Also, I have to mention that if you like this kind of Chinese food, San Tung is still better. read more

I've been on a mu shu pork kick this month: brandy ho's (well, it was mu shu chicken), dragon well in the marina, & last night (7:30ish) from eric's on church. First impressions are everything: From the outside, Eric's corner location looks inviting. The decor inside is simple & very pleasing to the eye. It's clean, bright, a has few "Asian" decorating touches. We were acknowledged as soon as we walked in even though they were pretty busy. Service deserves 5 stars- we had three waiters taking care of us, which means our water glasses never ran empty, our food was brought out quickly & we were asked several times how our meal was coming along. The waiters here are attentive. Chopstick worthy: We started with the appetizer combo: the potstickers & chicken "drums of heaven" were awesome. The potstickers tastes like the ones I grew up eating & the chicken, what little meat was on them, was nicely marinated in a divine sweet & spicy sauce. Their small wonton soup was a large enough portion for two people, the snow peas & carrots were still crispy, & the won tons were really delicious. I think it was the best thing I ate last night. Their fried rice was as white as their walls; I'm used to it being brown from the soy sauce, so it definitely lacked that good fried rice flavor I was looking forward to. Okay, I'm ready to talk about the mu shu pork... it was delicious- i love their hoisin sauce & the pork was very lean, but why, in the name of all that is delicious, did they serve it up with TORTILLAS instead of thin rice paper pancakes??? I was so disappointed! I know they are trying to appeal to a large, non Asian clientele, but mu shu comes with those rice paper pancakes & I can't settle for anything different. The other thing we ordered was orange beef- the good news was that it was a huge portion. The bad news is that, even though it was decent tasting, it was not special/flavorful enough to rave about. The bf & I ate here a few years ago with some friends & the meal was not very memorable. If it weren't for YELP allowing me to document our latest dining experience here, I'm sure three years from now I would not remember what I ate & if it was even any good. The bf & I agreed we would come back to try other things on their menu to see if anything else holds our attention, but we also agreed that PF Changs in Palo Alto is the best place for "white-afied" Chinese food. My old friend Eric suggested meeting at this place for dinner. Great suggestion. On a week night, this place was fairly packed. However, we were seated after only waiting for 5 minutes. The menu had a nice variety of dishes. We got the orange beef, eggplant in garlic sauce and garlic chicken. Oh and Eric decided to get the Drums of Heaven too. Everything was pretty tasty, especially the orange beef - absolute nectar (as Little Timmy likes to say). I have had orange beef from many places and I have to say this place was the best so far. The prices were very reasonable. Interior was clean and not very 'Chinese restaurant' like. No lanterns or dragons or anything draped in red cloth. Would definitely come here again. read more
