I recently went to a hole-in-the-wall Burmese place based on the posted Yelp hours and found it closed for lunch. Wanted to grab something quick to eat before heading back to work, I decided to try Wan Kee Restaurant. This is a Chinese fast food place with hot trays of ready made food for takeouts or dined-in. I decided to try their 3 items--BBQ chicken, Orange Chicken (too sweet) and Rice. Not bad. Service was super friendly. Appreciate it so much. Nice interior for dine in also. TL;DR - affordable lunch Has Wan Kee been here for a while? How did I not notice this place? Anyway, this place does accept card and is quite affordable for the amount you get at this place. For example - two items (rice/noodles and an entree) is around $8-something, and another item is $10-something. We got a chicken kung pao, it was quite saucy and good. We also got a spicy fish, which was quite tender (not my fav) but a great value. Funny that they offer refried beans - but hey we're in the mission! read more

I came here for lunch where the food is served buffet style and you have your choices of 2 to 4 items. Prices start around $6-7 and go up for each item by about $1.50. There were a variety of different dishes ranging from what looked like orange chicken to fried rice to various veggies. Do note that rice counts as an item, so if you want two entrees and rice, that's 3 items. I ended up getting the chicken curry and pork spareribs. The curry is a yellow curry that comes with potatoes and carrots and tastes okay. It's not particularly amazing but it is flavorful and good enough. The pork spare ribs were not too bad either, but they don't really taste all that amazing. I guess for kind of a fast food feel the food wasn't too bad. I'd skip the steam rice, surprisingly that was quite dry and unpleasant. There was also this tamarindo tasting drink which was interesting to find here. I came in yesterday during the rain and I was preoccupied. The owner was very very friendly too much so I should have been suspicious. The only prices posted were for combo takeout which i did not want. There was no take out menu and i asked. The food? The chowmein was barely cooked and the bits of carrot were raw. That was the best part. The fish had no taste and was 3/4 bones and said bones were very hard to remove. The sauce seemed to be made solely of corn starch and food coloring. The pork was pork knuckles and the same sauce not just bland but no taste and heavy on the corn starch. As i said I was preoccupied with the heavy rain and not watching carefully. I live in SOMA and didn't check the food till I got home. i seldom leave feedback negative or positive but in this case it is soooo deserving. What a rip off. Restaurants like this truly give the Mission a bad name. Avoid eating here! read more

The veggies are crisply fresh, not soggy. The owner, Kiki, is welcoming and friendly (Asian or Pacific Islander woman who interestingly seems fluent in Spanish?). Cocktail jazz playing softly (I'll take it, so much better than many potential alternatives). Never seen it too crowded but has a loyal and diverse following, so never empty for long. I'm glad it survived the pandemic, so far. I had a lightly-fried fish (swai, very tender) dish, a yellow curry chicken, and sautéed veggies, all tasty and satisfying. There are 15-20 options, (including plantanas!) The combos are one of the best nutritious deals in the Mission: 2@$8.85; 3@$10.85; 4@$13.80. We stopped by here to eat lunch and I asked to use the bathroom. I was told there wasn't a bathroom. Ok...went all the way to the public bathroom and then returned for lunch. Horrible spicy chicken and very bland veggies. Then I decided to see if I could at least wash my hands, went to the back and low and behold there is a bathroom!!! The curry was flavorful and came with a drumstick. The spicy chicken was tasty and had just the right amount of heat. The plantains were soft and had just a hint of sweetness. Despite the lady who was serving the food was very nice & friendly, but the food was left over from probably the day before and it tasted nasty (the food tasted weird). There were no flavor in the ordered we had (lemon chicken, pepper chicken w/ fried rice & bamboo with chicken, fried calamari w/ chowmein). While there piling your food they always ask is this enough or would you like more! and depending how hungry you are u answer. OK, this is a small restaurant on Mission street. It is nothing fancy...it is the type of place that is catered by the elderly, monolingual Latino workers and other neighborhood folks. I originally went there because it seemed very popular, during lunch time there's a line out the door. Go for the lunch menu: the food is plentiful and affordable. You can get rice or noodles, a warm side dish and chicken (or fish or vegetables) and a can of soda for six bucks! Yes, you can't even get a fast food meal with that type of money. I have tried the chicken yellow curry with potatoes and vegetables with rice several times. It is decent, and the food is comparable to any other curry I had on clement street. The Chinese lady behind the counter (the owner maybe?) is very nice, and always tells me what's good that day. There's also a Latino dude that works there, he generally takes my order in Spanish - he is also very nice and they both move the line fast. Like I mentioned, they have a large Latino clientele so the menu has some interesting "fusion" items, like black beans topped with cilantro and fried plantain. One of my favorite food choices is rice, plantain and steamed bok choy. I recommend getting your food "to go", instead of sitting there with some of the more colorful characters that populate the few tables in the dinning room. I'm sure some food snobs would never go to places like this, but it is an option for a quick, affordable and tasty lunch. Beats a cold sandwich any day! read more

A Lithuanian tourist guided me here (strange world) last week. Immediately I was delighted by the smiling Asian woman who goes out of her way to be friendly. Whatever you order, she says "special for you!" I agree with the other post that the food isn't strictly Chinese. It is an odd fusion, but I liked everything I've had here. I must say, I'm impressed. This place is the complete opposite of what it looks like. From the outside it looks like one of the many places in the Richmond or Chinatown where the food is greasy and totally lacks flavor, and the owners are brusque and impatient. I always assumed that's what this place was, until I finally went in today. The food looks good up-close. You can tell it's not just meat in oil. The ladies behind the counter were very nice, joking with customers and explaining what was in each dish. The food tasted good. Very flavorful. We're not talking "the best Chinese food I've ever had." But, it might be the best $6 Chinese lunch I've ever had. I didn't feel sick afterward, so that's huge. At most of these Chinese buffet places in the city a "2-item combo" would mean 2 dishes and rice/noodles. Here, the rice is an "item," but because of their prices it's not really a big deal. I really love this place, the food and the lady who owns it. The food is pretty delicious, especially the Orange Chicken. The menu is small. What you see through the window, is what they serve everyday. That's really the only thing I would change. Adding a new dish of the week or switching out some that aren't that popular. The owner is amazing! She's super friendly and she remembers your name after a few visits. She's very generous with the serving size. The Chinese worker is rude as hell. From outside, the place looked clean and nice. A couple friends and I wanted to try it out and the food was cold and tasted old. We went back to the front and asked to refund our money nicely, the worker (i forgot her name, she was asian) yelled at us and told us she can't give us our money back. She made a huge scene and started yelling like crazy infront of the customers. So we asked her if we can atleast switch our food or heat it up, she was giving us so much attitude. I don't know how they let her work there with that ugly temper of hers. The other workers were really nice and calm.
