Punjab is everything it needs to be it's a convenient local small business that offers Vietnamese and Chinese (+other east and Southeast Asian) dishes at reasonable prices in the Mission. This place has also been here for so long and I've always walked by it. I'm happy I finally got to try it. The service was great and they pack your food to go for you which is so nice and honestly adds a lot to my perception. Like a lot of establishments they prefer if you pay in cash or there is a percentage on card purchases. The resturant is very spacious with a lot of Asian art scattered around and some vintage neon signs which I love. We ordered the shumai, meatball pho and Singapore style noodles. The shumai was not my fave. The portion sizes were insane for the entrees. The meatball pho was a little salty but the texture of the meatballs was good and the more everything soaked in the broth the better it got. The Singapore style noodles were good I've never had it before so not sure what it should taste like. I will say the shrimp was cooked perfectly but just wish there was a little more flavor in the noodles and chicken. Overall, I'd go again and take a group of friends especially the morning after a night out. I feel the mom and pop vibes, so I don't expect something insanely gourmet or anything like that. It is decent food that hits the cravings at a good value and it is convenient cause I'm local. This totaled around $40 for 2 people with 3 dishes and we had plenty of left overs. I'm still on the hunt for a good classic egg foo young that's wok-fried, has an appropriate amount of veggies and protein mixed in, and is smothered in a nice savory gravy. When I saw this place on social media, I had to try it! They even had crab rangoons, which is another classic American Chinese food I love and miss from the East Coast. Unfortunately, the egg foo young was similar to what I've been finding around the city. It was pan fried with lots of veggies and only a hint of protein. The gravy was bland, and the white rice was overcooked and dry. The rangoons tasted like they overcomplicated the filling when it should be as simple with cream cheese, imitation crab meat, white pepper, a little sugar, and salt. The filling just tasted off to me. What this place has going for it is the very reasonable prices and large portions. I ordered takeout and got my food in a reasonable amount of time. It's probably my fault for ordering an unpopular dish, and they may shine more with their other Chinese entrees and Vietnamese dishes since they're a fusion restaurant. Great service and food here for lunch today. Pork fried rice combination entree with pork lo mien was quite good; very happy to also get a bowl of Egg Drop Soup with it. Beef chow fun is also good as well. Take out can easily be under $20 per head if you live near by and for the portions they give it's very good for your buck. This place is a 24th street gem! The name of the restaurant skewed my perception at first but this Chinese restaurant is something special. When you enter, you feel the welcoming energy and vibe. They have a cool bar area which the locals must love to sit at. I chose a corner table and was helped promptly upon arrival. I was craving egg foo yung with rice and this place did not disappoint. I liked the Punjab special because it includes shrimp, pork, and chicken.. a loaded combination. The gravy was also a nice touch and brought an amazing flavor. This was one of my mom's favorite places to go growing up. I remember coming here for lunches and dinners with family for Chinese Food. It was inexpensive and gave you a lot of food for the cost. Well, I'm here to say that they are still pretty inexpensive (comparatively) and you still get a huge portion for the price. Although it's not fancy, unique or gourmet - the food is delicious and served up quickly. My coworkers and I come here frequently for the "soup". They have a pretty large selection of Chinese soups, as well as Pho. They have quite the menu that spans different cuisines, so there is something for everyone. My favorite is the rare beef pho with meatballs, I get the rare beef on the side. The wonton soup is also very good and a large portion. Service is friendly and they always seem to remember our group, we order right away and within a few minutes, delivered hot to the table. read more

The place looks closed because of the plywood in front of the building covering the damage from a car that crashed into the restaurant but they're still open on their usual schedule. At the server's suggestion, I had the sesame chicken rice plate with soup for around $12 which is a good price for this area of the mission which has been getting more expensive even before inflation. Might have to order the general cho's chicken next time since they don't serve that as a rice plate and it's a little more expensive. If there was one thing that might have made this 5stars, maybe if the rice plate came with an egg roll or even a crab Rangoon filled with fake crab and cream cheese. Some small appetizer for a little palate cleanser might have done it. Still a very good meal and hopefully they're able to get the front fixed soon. read more

My go to spot for Vietnamese food when I'm in the neighborhood. Great Pho for a good price, I recommend the 5spice chicken pho, the #1 pho, or the lemongrass beef noodle soup. 3 VISITS For four Wednesday nights (one in February and three in March) I've been rehearsing at Brava Theater. About one block away from that theater is Punjab Restaurant. On that first Wednesday night I passed by Punjab Restaurant prior to my rehearsal. I didn't eat that night, but one item caught my eye - Korean Chicken. The second Wednesday night before rehearsal I came here to eat dinner. I ordered the Korean Chicken, which I hoped it would be something similar to the ones I've ordered in the past at two other Chinese restaurants in San Francisco. The Korean Chicken at Punjab has a more chili flavor than I anticipated. The following Wednesday before rehearsal I came here for dinner. I always believe if an item has the name of the restaurant that means this might be a signature dish. I ordered the Punjab fried rice. The rice tasted too dry. This was the only item I order that night. On my last night I came back here again before rehearsal. I was going to a try an item named after the restaurant again. This time I was choosing between the Punjab chow mein or Punjab Hong Kong-style crispy noodles. I decided to order the Hong Kong-style crispy noodles. I also ordered pork egg rolls. What I noticed from the egg rolls is I couldn't taste the pork. The Punjab Hong Kong-style crispy noodles had too many vegetables. After eating the Korean chicken, which I was disappointed, I wanted to give this place a try a couple more times especially since this restaurant is about a block away from Brava Theater where I was rehearsing. The items I ate didn't taste terrible but just ok. The only reason I am giving this place one extra star is the service - I receive the food very fast about 15 minutes after I place an order. Since I am done with rehearsing for a show, I do not see myself coming back here again. read more

It was a cold and cloudy day a few days before Christmas. I was looking for something good and hot. Being in the Mission district down on 24th I was thinking Mexican would be the spot. But who would've guessed that this Chinese Vietnamese restaurant had what I Needed. I was greeted by staff and offered options. I agreed to try there Pho and later I saw there advertisement for freshly made dumplings, which I couldn't resist. I'm so glad I did. They are so fresh that they tell you it may take 10-15 minutes but it's worth the wait. Come by and enjoy this bicultural world of foods. Ordered takeout from this place. I thought all the food was solid, but maybe not something to write home about. I thought the flavor of the curry was tasty, but I felt that the meat quality was lacking. Additionally, the curry flavor was strong, yet I found other flavors to be weaker, so when mixed or eaten family-style, the curry overpowered everything. I'd go again when needing takeout and in the neighborhood, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way. I do recommend the curry chicken, though. read more

The nice lady gave us complimentary tea and asked if we wanted our bean sprouts cooked or not. The broth was nice and hot. Seating was spacious in there. You ask why 4 stars. It's been here forever. I have eaten at Punjab for years. They're family owned, no frills, nothing fancy but serve some good chinese food! I love their chow mein, fried rice and their won ton noodle soups. I recently went to the Punjab Restaurant for a meal. The Mission is full of many places to enjoy a veggie burrito yet decided to change it up for something different. I have traveled to the Punjab region in India. Amazing Indian cuisine there. Interestingly enough the Punjab Restaurant doesn't serve any Indian food. There is a cuisine in India called Indo-Chinese that is a fusion cuisine of Indian food & Chinese food yet even this isn't offered here. What the Punjab Restaurant does offer is Chinese, Vietnamese, & American cuisine. There is a fairly lengthy vegetarian menu with 16 vegetarian dishes many that can easily be made vegan or are already vegan by default. I opted to go with the Spicy Basil Eggplant with Tofu. To customize it vegan opt for the soft tofu instead of fried tofu. I had it paired with brown rice. It was quite alright. Nice & spicy. Flavorful & good sized portion. I look forward to future visits at the Punjab Restaurant to try more of the vegetarian menu & to vary it up shifting paradigms from ordering veggie burritos in the neighborhood. read more

My favorite restaurant ever. When I lived in SF, I used to go here like every other day. Food is not only affordable but extremely good. Love the bar setup for seating, it's such a comfy area to eat. Also owner knew me by name, she's one of the sweetest ladies I've ever met. I'm literally gonna make a trip all the way across the country from Denver just to eat here again. Yes it's that good :). Oh and they also offer vegan options :). And they have the best General Tsos you will ever find. I'll bet my life savings you won't find a better place. Looking for a good spot, this is the place. A Chinese restaurant with Indian name, it's funny and confusing but it's actually decent cooking. Well, today I went to get vaccinated at the General Hospital in the afternoon and after that I was hungry. I walked about 7 minutes to this restaurant, I needed something quick cheap and easy. I had the sweet and sour pork with chicken fried rice lunch combination for $12.95 including hot tea. I thought it was decent, the fried rice was surprisingly good. I could taste the Cantonese "wok hey" in the fried rice even though I ordered it as a part of combination and not by itself. I will come back and get the fried rice next time, because it's not easy to find "wok hey" fried rice in San Francisco. You would think that with that so many Cantonese people here you could find good fried rice here, but that's not the case. Mostly fried rice in the bay area are wet, soft and no "wok hey / smokey" taste. I kinda gave up actually, I knew these people are mostly from Taishan not from Hong Kong but the fried rice here gave me little bit of hope. And by the way, here they serves Pho too! ha ha! This restaurant has a personality crisis just like the song by The New York Dolls, except that you don't have to wear your leather pants and stiletto heels to eat here. read more

This is and will always be my favorite place for Chinese food. I grew up blocks from it and my family had dinner at least once a week here, when they were down the block at the smaller place. I compare all other places to this. I love all the dishes and have taken so many out of town visits to eat here. I so glad Felicia is keeping the same quality and good family recipes. Punjab seems like such a misplaced random shop that I feel like it pushes away potential customers with it's generic signs but it's pretty damn amazing for where it is at, how good it taste, and how much it cost. First of all, it's a Chinese / Vietnamese restaurant. Nothing Indian whatsoever, don't get confused. But the poor-ish naming convention for an Asian restaurant just makes this place all the more authentic to me. Service And I feel like this place is the real deal, the service is what you'd expect, a little more rude, but they are actually just no fuss, they are quick to take your order and deliver your meal. Food I've tried the Pho, I've tried the Chinese, and I've tried their Vietnamese sandwiches, all of them pass the price-food ratio test for me. As someone who is more value oriented with food, this place hits the sweet spot! The restaurant seems very home-y for me, the waiters all seem to get along (family-run?) they seem to have a good amount of regulars. THE WAIT I got takeout here in December 2019, on a Friday around 5:30pm. They guessed it would be a 20-minute wait for 2 entrees but they were faster than that. It wasn't too busy in the restaurant.
