Since it's quite a drive from Irvine, I finally took the opportunity to visit Er Wa Cold Pot Fish, a place I've been wanting to try for a long time! Besides the fresh sea bass and pork intestines, the pot was loaded with tofu, cucumber, bean sprouts, and other vegetables. It arrived at the table overflowing with food . The sea bass was incredibly tender and flavorful, soaking up all the delicious broth. The pork intestines were soft and rich, and the bullfrog was fresh, meaty, and not fishy at all. Every bite was delicious . Cantonese Chinese Sausage I didn't get a single bite The moment it hit the table, my three little monsters devoured it! They almost started arguing over the last piece Houttuynia Salad (Fish Mint) When I ordered it, the server asked: "The flavor is pretty unique. Have you had it before?" I actually ordered it specifically for my husband. It's not something you see often on restaurant menus in the U.S., and my husband absolutely loves it. The moment I saw it on the menu, I knew I had to take some home for him That evening, he was so happy when he saw it. Definitely worth bringing back Shredded Chicken Cold Noodles I expected Sichuan-style cold noodles to be quite spicy, but they were actually tangy, refreshing, and only mildly spicy. I've been here several times because the weekday lunch special is a great value, and the portions have always been generous. Today, there were three of us. We ordered the same items that are included in the lunch special because that's what we always come here for. After placing our order, I noticed they had entered everything as regular menu items instead of the lunch special. I immediately corrected them that we re ordering the lunch special not the regular menus, but the staff refused. she told us the lunch special was only for two people, that it wouldn't be enough food for three adults, and also said the kitchen had already started preparing the order so they couldn't change . end up even with everything ordered as regular menu items, 3 of us couldn't finish the food. We packed almost everything to go. Because of that, what should have been around a $40 lunch turned into a $104 bill The most frustrating part is that everything they insisted we order was far too much. Three adults couldn't even finish it. We had to pack most of the food to go (see the attached photo). The photo clearly shows there was still plenty of food left in the fish pot, along with all the extra ingredients they recommended we add. I don't mind paying for good food. What I mind is being told I needed to order significantly more food when we couldn't even finish what they insisted we order. Love this place!! The Erwa Cold Pot Fish is so good with rice! We always order two (one spicy and non-spicy) for my grandma cause she can't have spicy haha. The pots come in different sizes depending on your party and they are filled with fish and veggies! My family also ordered the hot and sour jelly noodles and marinated beef tendon which were good! They don't come to play with the spiciness. My fav dish was the cold noodles, it was the perfect texture although verrry spicy. Cold pot fish was not actually cold, it's still warm but just not kept on a burner. The fish was very tender and I liked the tofu/veggies that came inside the soup. You can also order other items to put in the pot (like spam, wood ear mushroom, more veggies, etc). This is a hidden gem Chinese spot in the same plaza as Meet U BBQ in San Gabriel. It's literally in the corner next to Melo Melo. There is free parking in the lot. There is also an underground parking lot with stair access that leads to Meet U. I was also curious why the name is "cold pot". I ordered the popular shredded chicken noodles and konjac jelly noodle and both were super oily and too spicy for my taste. The soup for the shredded chicken cold noodle was entirely chili oil and a bit of vinegar and sweet soy sauce but it was too overwhelmingly oily. The konjac jelly spicy noodle was even more spicy with thai chilis and a more sour taste and the noodles absorbed all of the chili oil which made it too greasy. I would try something else other than the noodles next time but I would not recommend these noodles if you can not handle your spice well. I would recommend to ask for the sauce separately so you can add to your own taste and spice tolerance. read more

To my surprise, the fish was actually hot and not cold. I went to my good friend, Google, and learned that it's called "cold pot" because the fish is fully cooked in the kitchen and then served in a pot, where it's left to cool slightly; whereas in hotpot, the food is cooked at the table. I don't have Sichuan food often but everyone at my table enjoyed it, including me, so I know it was good. I loved the numbing spice from the broth and peppercorns but I needed rice to offset the spice a bit. We chose the blackened fish fillet with a medium spice level, which I don't regret, but if you're weak with spice I would lower it a bit. I balanced all the spice by eating the spicy and sour golden soup, a dish that was much milder and comforting. It wasn't spicy at all but there was a bit of tanginess and a generous amount of beef belly. The hot and sour jelly noodle was alright since it wasn't as chewy as I would have liked. The chopped cucumber in garlic sauce is a good side dish since it also functions as a palette cleanser. Overall, the service was great and the food came out relatively quickly. We came in on Saturday late at noon (it was almost 1 p.m.). It was not too crowded, so we got seated right away. The place was in a small, busy plaza. The good thing was that they have underground parking as you drive into the back of the plaza. There's also elevator access from the underground parking to the ground. There were also three of us, and we ordered the signature cold pot fish. Just to be clear, the fish was hot but served in a cold (room temperature, no additional heating) pot. You can also choose add-ons to the pot. We added a couple of veggie options to the pot. The fish was fresh and well-prepared, with no aftertaste at all! You can choose the spicy level. I forgot to take a picture of the sauce. You can eat the fish and everything else in the pot as they are served. I preferred to use the sauce. It was like hot oil splashed onto some seasoning, chopped green onions, and fried soybeans; it was very savory and killed the spiciness a little bit somehow. It was a good match. The duck head was my first lifetime try. It looked scary at first. I made the outside of the skull face to the plates so I could not see the shape of the head. Judging from the chili pepper on top of it, it was not as spicy as I expected. The mixture of the chili and peanuts increased the overall savory components. It was an interesting experience. I ordered Erwa beef slices with golden soup, hot and sour jelly, and two white rice for two people, and the total came out to around $70 with tax and tip, and I wasn't even full. I witnessed the young female waitress (who works dinner shifts) melt down today in this restaurant. At first, it looked like she was making sure the customer leaves a cash tip, but she lost it so quickly and looks like she had a whole mental breakdown. The waitress yelled on top of her lungs across the room, getting everybody's attention, and called the customer a "f****** idiot" in Chinese for not leaving a tip. She was close to flipping the table and smashing some plates from how I see it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I no longer felt safe there, so I put down the menu and left.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Her hostility was shocking even to me, I feel so bad for the party getting yelled at.
