Was walking around Balboa Park and wanted to grab a drink close by! Excelsior was a solid choice. Nestled on the bustling Mission St, it seems to be a neighborhood staple with students and families alike. I ordered the Ube Matcha and a Ube (pop?) Tart to go. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside, the shop is on the smaller side with a singular table in the back and some window seating up front.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was nice and provided me with recommendations on pastries when I asked. I really like the Ube Matcha! Matcha flavor wasn't too strong, but allowed for the Ube flavor to come through. Creamy, not too sweet. Definitely up there on one of my favorite matchas in the city! Highly recommend this spot if you're in the area, always great to support our local neighborhood businesses!

Went out for a walk today and had to make a quick stop at Excelsior Coffee Co. before going too far. Picked up an iced coffee to go (always perfect!) and couldn't resist checking out their ube pastries and desserts -- colorful, rich, and absolutely delicious. This place truly feels like the heart of the neighborhood. The staff are always so friendly and welcoming, and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the vibe is just right for a quick grab-and-go or a cozy sit-down.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Between the coffee, the vibrant ube treats, and their other desserts, there's always something that makes me want to come back. If you're in the area, it's definitely a must-visit neighborhood coffee shop!

On the corner of Mission & Excelsior is this cute & mighty black & brown owned coffee shop. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The intentionally in crafting this space shows a love letter to the Excelsior.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This is a small-business to support! With lots of ube baked good and drink options including tea, coffee and even some refrigerated beverages. Quick service. Cute stickers to buy at the front. Matcha Latte -- nothing special but would definitely get it again. Enjoyed the overall flavor.

Stopped by here on a Saturday and there was a decent amount of people at the cafe. We ordered the matcha latte, breakfast burrito, Ube poptart and banana bread. The matcha latte wasn't anything spectacular or different from what I usually get at other spots. The eggs in the breakfast burrito was a bit runny/ watery? But the hot sauce on the side made the flavors really come together! It was a bit of a wait for the breakfast burrito. The Ube poptart was different -something we haven't tried before so we liked it; it had a nice texture to it and wasn't soggy. The banana bread was my fave - nice texture and flavors! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Overall, this is a very chill cafe, I do wish it was a tad bit bigger though so we had more spots to sit![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

I had high hopes for Excelsior Coffee since they have their own beans, blends, and other bags of coffee in store and online. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I like the vibe of the coffee shop, with a good theme and unique decor, it definitely differentiates itself from other coffee shops in this regard.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I was a little disappointed in the horchata latte I got. It felt a little watered down. The espresso flavor wasn't as strong as I would have hoped, maybe a single shot and not double? And the horchata flavor didn't have the nutty, cinnamon, and sweetness that is typical of an actual horchata. The idea is unique and I was super excited, but wasn't quite there on execution. Could have been a one off experience though! Would be interested in coming back to try other menu items and some of the baked goods

Visited on a Sunday morning with some friends, one of whom has been coming for years and kept mentioning that this was his favorite coffee shop in the city. Finding street parking near the shop was surprisingly easy, which was a nice bonus. We arrived around 9:30 AM and encountered a short line, but it moved quickly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The shop is small but offers some seating, and the staff was very kind and attentive.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I didn't try their pastries, but they had a nice selection that looked delicious. I ordered a cappuccino, which was good--slightly more acidic than I typically prefer, but still tasty. I found it to be on the milkier side. Overall, I'd revisit this spot to try their pastries and explore other of their coffee drinks.

This is my friend's favorite coffee shop, so I had to come check it out. There was a decent line at 9:30 AM. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior is very cool with its bold, graphic style and neon lights.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's a little bit of seating my the front window facing the street and also a bigger table in the back.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The owners are so nice and friendly, they very clearly care about their customers and regulars. They have lots of pastries in the display case and more treats in the fridge with plenty of ube flavored goodies. Next time I will try! I got the Ube Matcha Latte, which only comes iced. I found that the matcha settled rather quickly and it was mostly milk. The ube flavor did not come through at all, which was disappointing. For how expensive it was, I expected a lot better. Would recommend sticking to coffee here.

The vibe was cute and service was quick.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Ube Matcha Latte - I honestly wanted to love this, but I truly did not :/ The matcha was too bitter and even though I mixed the drink, there was a lack of ube flavor 1/5. Ube Pop Tart - Very unique and tasty. The favor was there and it was a nice sweet treat to have with my drink. The only thing I would've changed would be having more filling on the inside 4/5. Ham and Cheese Croissant - A very classic pastry that tasted fresh, but was not above any other ham and cheese croissant I've ever had 3/5

I wanted to like this place so bad!! It's close to home and seemed like a nice place to study but I will not be coming back. The drinks weren't bad, which is why I gave them 2 stars instead of 1. We ordered the chagaccino and horchata latte. The spinach and feta pastry wasn't bad but wasn't great. I was mostly excited to try their ube pastries. There were so many to choose from and I couldn't choose so we ordered the ube pastry box. The first box I noticed a short white hair on the cheesecake so I asked if I could get another box. It happens, the place is dog friendly so maybe a dog was there when they were putting the box together, no big deal. The second box we opened had mold growing in multiple spots on the cheesecake. I was so sad to see it but so happy I noticed before I tried anything in the box. I had to ask for them to just refund me because at that point I couldn't trust that any of the ube pastries were safe to eat. There's one big table in the back and one bar seating area at the front with 3 stools.

04.19.2025. Ube Matcha Latte. 7.50. Chicken Empanadas. 3 for 12.00. Ube matcha latte was okay. The ube flavor was strong, kind of over powered the matcha. But the matcha was hand whisked to order, which was nice. Empanadas sucked. The chicken was so dry and the crust was not the best. It lacked butter and taste. I would definitely not get these again.

Been coming here for years and finally taking a minute to write a long-overdue review. Was told about this place by a coffee / espresso aficionado who runs his own shop and spoke super highly about the quality of espresso drinks. From cortados to cappuccinos to mochas to straight espresso, everything that the baristas make here is done to incredible quality standards. I've personally been in the food & beverage / hospitality industry for many years and can't give this place a higher recommendation. Service is friendly / chill, art and decor is super on-point & on-brand, and the proprietor is an awesome woman who cares about / is involved in the community. Excelsior Coffee is an absolute a 5-star gem.

We came to this cafe because that had some UBE goodies. We found UBEmisu & UBE treats leches cake slices. Mmmm they were so good, especially the tres leches cake! Super moist, indeed. The UBEmisu had a strong espresso flavor, which I loved. The UBE flavor in the cakes were not overpowering. Which is fine. We also ordered an UBE rice crispy treat, pop tart and cookies. The barista was not very enthusiastic when we visited. She didn't explain what the cookies or pastries were. There were NO prices listed, so we're blindly just picking up this and that and our final total was $60 for what we bought. I was shocked!

I felt the oatmilk latte was way too bitter. I didn't drink mine and instead threw it away. It was was too acidic for me. Extremely difficult to find parking here, and the staff has a bit of an attitude when I ordered because I guess I'm not a local. For instance when I asked for my drink for here, they said they only have to go cups and that I can stand and drink it here. Ummm, okay.

I've been on a matcha kick lately, and let's just say, thank God Excelsior Coffee was open on a Sunday morning. (All other places I searched for on Yelp were closed until later morning-early afternoon.) I love the hardcore motorbike vibes inside the shop, and was even more impressed with the variety of ube and matcha pastries in the pastry case. This time around, I decided just to stick with a matcha latte (unsweetened and with almond milk). Just by the vibrancy of green, I could tell that the baristas here use really high-quality matcha for their lattes. It tasted so sweet - almost as if there were hints of vanilla, despite it being unsweetened. I also paid slightly less than what I'd normally pay at other shops in the Bay Area ($5.50 compared to upwards of $6.50). I can't wait to come back to try their other menu items! read more

This has been on my bucket list of small coffee shops to try for awhile now since I am a fan of ube desserts. I ended up getting the ube flan ($6) and a matcha latte ($5). The prices are pretty average for a coffee shop but I have to say I was a bit disappointed. The ube flan had a decent flan on top but the ube on the bottom hardly tastedof ube. It had a bit of a more mushy/spongy texture than I was expecting as I was told by the barista it was a cheesecake crust. The matcha latte was average but had a very mild amount of matcha compared to milk. Overall, I loved the interiors aesthetics but this will probably not be my go-to for matcha or ube desserts. read more

When new businesses set up shop in old San Francisco neighborhoods, it's interesting to observe how they fit in with the community. Excelsior Coffee is unique in that they've made an effort to make sure they contribute to the culture vs taking away from it and I love that about them. Their shop serves up really good drinks, pastries, and often has pop-ups for small businesses to shine. My favorite has been Ube Area and all the filipino-inspired treats and flavors they've been selling...I typically grab that and pair it with Excelsior's Horchata Latte. Solid! Overall Excelsior is an awesome coffee shop, with good San Francisco (never "San Fran") vibes and high quality coffee. What's not to love? read more

Picked up my sister in bernal heights and really wanted coffee. Saw that this place was 6 minutes away and off I went ( also because I knew they sell Ube Area's desserts, which I am a huge fan). I go the horchata latte which comes with almond rice and two brownie bars: pandan and ube. They are delicious like all of the Ube Area's Desserts. When I left, i realized everyone was buying the special cinnamon rolls for that day ( apparently it was a special pop up). It looked so good and gooey!! I was sad I wasn't aware of it, but hopefully I'll get a chance to try it next time! read more

Pretty good, got the horchata latte iced and it's soooo small for $5...and it's half ice. Felt totally unrealistic of a price. However customer service was great. So sweet and came out to give me my coffee instead of just call my name and let it sit! So I loved that. read more

It was my first time here and I wanted to ask some questions but getting questions answered was harder than pulling teeth. Why? Because the girl that was working here had attitude for days. As in two years later the coronavirus has ended and she still has attitude to spare. I really don't know why she feels like she needs to stockpile attitude but I really don't like being condescended just because the workers here feel like answering my questions is a waste of their time. Considering that the coffee was mediocre and the service (read attitude) was horrible the five star rating must be because of the desserts from Ube area. The rating here is really undeserved. To the owner: If your employees are all pleasant human beings doing their best, maybe they could show that? Or maybe they aren't so pleasant if they're being described as "snobby", "grumpy", "unhappy with their jobs", "condescending" and "pretentious". Maybe you're just refusing to look at the problem. As for sounding off, may I ask what choice of words was so deeply offensive? And if you really are operating out of sheer necessity and survival, maybe--just maybe, not be condescending to your customers? And yes, if I'm being made to feel bad just for asking questions, I will write about it. FYI: An employees second day on the floor does not incapacitate them from being nice read more

Trendy cafe with some fun pastry items. Came in on a Friday morning during Covid. There was a short line outside but it moved quickly. Ordered the horchata latte and was pretty pleased with it. It was subtle but the cinnamon flavor was still able to come through, although I didn't really taste the rice milk. Still, I appreciated that it wasn't super sweet. read more

As I stand out side of this establishment during covid, I peer into an establishment with biker memorabilia and local art that reflects the surrounding area of Graffiti and ruggedness. A seasoned barista cordially focuses on the customer she is attending in An ambiance that demands an expectation of waiting to get proper service. The hospitality is both attentive and connective, meant to have you come back again. The barista, an expert in her craft, extracts an espresso that is slightly bitter but round out by strong milk chocolatey notes with a hint of cherry. Her technique in latte art is impressive, creating a perfect foamed latte for the cappuccino I ordered. Beautiful pastries flavored with Ube and other exotic tastes line the pastry case. Not large or over barring deserts but perfect to have with something to liven up your day. read more

BIPOC owned and operated neighborhood coffee shop with lovely baristas who remember "your usual." I love that they have a test kitchen on the weekend and serve as a pop up location for other small BIPOC run businesses like Ube Area bakery and Rize Up. read more

This place has STYLE. When I was walking up there were three people taking photos outside the window, and I actually considered buying one of their t shirts--I love the old school design. I ordered a cappuccino and it was mad smooth, plus rich in flavor. Will stop by again the next time I'm in the area...great find! read more

I love this spot! I go to Excelsior Coffee for a horchata or matcha lattes, both delicious. EC has a nice variety of drinks that are all great. The pastry section is out of this world, I can't ever decide what to get. They offer a unique variety of colorful treats that are all amazing. The Ube cheesecake is top on my list! Staff here are really cool and sweet. The owners of this shop are local and have worked really hard to make this place what it is today and it really is something beautiful. Art and merch are both rad too!! read more

Good coffee but only if the barista I in a good mood. I came by and a girl gave me a cappuccino that was out out in the bar with out letting me know if it was mine since she out two drink out at the same time. As I waited I noticed that she was calling on other people who was after me so I asked if that was my drink. At first she didn't know but some home remembered that it was mine. At this time the cap was cold the texture of the milk was bad so I asked to get it Re-done. Biggest mistake since she gave me attitude and poured out the mild on my double shot espresso to make this overly hot drink with no latte art. Overall, this place has always had good coffee but some of the employees they hire don't really care about their customers and therefore will never be coming back to the place. read more

This place is such a gem! I had a dream about a glazed donut, so I was on the hunt for one in my neighborhood. Unfortunately, the first time I went they ran out of donuts, but I walked away with an ube flan and two ube strudels! Talk about a delicious replacements! I came here again today and I got a coffee mochi donut and an ube mochi donut. Wow! Their pastries are like sweet, but do not overpower the pastry. I also am a fan of the decor and the stickers they have. I look forward to coming here more in the future :) read more

Visited Sunday, September 1st with my husband: Delicious Ube pastries, excellent Matcha latte (didn't taste sweetened, which was fine by me!), rad tee-shirts and sweatshirts for sale (I hope they get the Speed Demon one back in a small!)... And no-joke great customer service. Oh and the beautiful Excelsior District neighborhood photos, full of character and history, lining the walls, worth visiting for them alone! read more

My favorite coffee shop! Friendly & kind baristas, great coffee, delicious ube pastries. I like ordering or picking up the pre-made dessert boxes they have on weekends (their social media account has updates on this). They also host pop ups from other small businesses. Don't judge a book by its cover. Cute style. Enjoy the vibe. As for drink quality.. uh Ordered a matcha with OAT milk. Paid an extra $1 & got a splash of milk. While the rest of my cup was filled with ICE WATER & some matcha powder. Wasn't even informed that I was ordering a water beverage with some matcha thrown on top. The cold water didn't even dissolve the powder. Just tossed my drink away cause it was legit water matcha. read more

I went here once about a year ago looking to try it out with a friend bc the pastries looked really interesting. Went in and ordered a latte while looking at the pastries, for whatever reason they don't have placards saying what any of the pastries are. And the employee seemed annoyed when I seemingly interrupted her talking to her coworker to ask? Like I'm supposed to look at this yellow cookie and know right off the bat that it's calamansi flavored. Waited for my coffee while they resume talking and looking around, I will say they have some cool merch. But the coffee was weak, the service was awkward, and I don't go to cafes just for pastries. Went in again today bc I happened to be nearby and wanted to give it another shot. This time I got helped by a different person but it was essentially the same experience. The latte was weak, the sweets were fine (still no signage on what anything is), merch was cool, and the service was awkward. Next time I'm running errands in outer mission I'm just going to take the slightly longer trip to mission blue in vis valley. read more

The bucatini was exactly how I like it--super thick, chewy, and cooked to a perfect al dente. But the real surprise was the gnocchi. The Gorgonzola cream sauce was hands down the best I've ever had. Gorgonzola can sometimes be a little too overpowering, but this sauce was incredibly creamy with the perfect balance of richness and flavor. We couldn't stop talking about it.

I was wrong because it actually was a hard chocolate exterior with caramel filling inside. I'd skip on this because of the price and how difficult it was to eat--we only finished it because we paid so much for it. The strawberry cream cube was also different. It sort of reminded me of a croissant but had a different texture alongside a peppery aftertaste while being sweet pastry. While I liked the texture of it, I personally wasn't a fan of the sweet peppery flavor, but the others in my group liked it. We came on a Saturday afternoon and had to wait in a decent sized line to order our food. Even though the line looked long, it does move pretty quickly. Service was average. The store itself was very aesthetic and had some limited indoor seating. Overall, I'd say I left feeling a bit underwhelmed and I don't think I'd personally come back.

The pastries are all flaky and crispy, and you can tell they were crafted by a true craftsman. I think what makes Juniper so special is the selection of unique flavors they have. My favorite being their award-winning Cubano croissant, their black sesame kouign amann, and their choux pastries. I do want to call out how much I appreciate the amount of savory pastries they have since I don't always want a sweet treat the moment I wake up. To note, Juniper is typically busy, but I have never waited in line for more than 10 minutes, even on weekends. They also have a lot of tables for seating, but because of the flow of people, it might be difficult to find a spot. Stop by here if you're around the area! They are also a sister shop of Saint Frank, so you can get some coffee while you're here as well.

Excelsior Coffee is such a cozy gem! I stopped in for a refreshing iced matcha and couldn't resist grabbing their ube pop tart. Both were fantastic. The matcha was smooth and not overly sweet, just the way I like it. And the ube pop tart? A total standout. It was flaky, colorful, and filled with delicious ube flavor. Tiny place right at Excelsior and Mission, with a really cool contemporary vibe, contrasting with all the places around it. The branding and typography outside the store is really cool, and just draws you into the place. Apart form coffee, they also do food collabs and pop ups, and on the day I went, they had an assortment of regular baked goods (cookies, savory tarts), as well as a whole bunch of ube and pandan items. They are an amazing local couple who were tired of leaving their neighborhood for coffee and decided to make good on their promise to bring fantastic coffee to the Excelsior. Although most travelers choose from their beautiful pastries, I had a more traditional breakfast (eggs, toast, grits; breakfast burrito). Everything was perfect except the grits were very bland (even with cheese). The service is extremely efficient and friendly and the coffee is delicious. I spent every breakfast there! read more

Our picky teenagers loved this place and asked to come here for breakfast everyday we were in Savannah. Delicious pastries, but my husband and I feel in love with the egg, cheese and your choice of meat croissants & bagels with a new coffee special every day to try or you can choose regular. read more
