As a fellow food service employee, I really do not want to post negative review. However the dining experience were so negative, I had to do this. And this place really deserves no star. Two of us had lunch at Fairwood Cafe yesterday. It was the worst dining experiences we have ever had. The place was not even half full when we walked. The first dish, Tuna with mixed fruit salad has NO Tuna at all. The waitress said as a matter of fact in a cold tone, "we do not have tuna so I did not put it in" after we inquired about it. Later, the waitress totally ignored us after served main dishes. There should have been an ice cream on hot waffle as the last dish for the meal. We waited almost half an hour after finished main dishes. And finally we had to wave to the Waitress. She just shout, " wait". And finally she brought us ice cream but NO waffle. At this point we have had enough. We have had the same chicken meal set for two a few time before and were generally happy about it. This time, both services and the dish themselves were so bad considering they just had the price increase. No wounder there were only a few tables of guests at Saturday noon time. I liked this little place, despite only seeing it under Covid lockdown. It has some really pretty tiles and ambiance and the to- go was pretty effortless. The owner was patient and explained a couple dishes to me and I got lots of food, Chicken Chow Mein, Spicy Chicken Fried Rice, and Vegetable Fried Rice, plus egg rolls. I guess I accidentally hung up too early and she had asked me about soups because I got 3 free soups in our order too. Everything was packed up well and ready when I got there. Good old fashioned Hong Kong cafe comfort food during COVID-19. I've been coming here since before the pandemic and it's quickly become one of my favorite places to eat at in the Union City/Fremont/Newark area. I place pickup orders with them at least twice a week during these COVID times. My favorite is the wonton vermicelli noodle soup and the ham and egg macaroni soup. ALWAYS ON POINT! Really hoping this restaurant doesn't shut down and survives the economic havoc caused by this pandemic because I will legit be really sad if they close down. Compared to Venus Cafe, the dine-in service at Fairwood is much better. It has a homelike, cozy feel to it and it really seems like the staff here cares a tad more about your business whereas at Venus, i feel more like they just want you to eat, pay and get out. I live 5 minute away but just found the place yesterday due to a blackout. Very authentic Cantonese food and reasonable price. I am surprised nobody in Chinese community recommended this before, likely they were not bought for it. For me I will definitely go there often from now on. At this point I have already waited close to 15 mins. She still runs around looking busy, so I wait for her to come take my order. After another 5-7 minutes... Instead of coming to get my order, she went and take orders from the couple who came in 15 minutes after me. While I'm still sitting there waiting for her to come get my order, after sitting for almost 20 mins. This is too much. I guess she don't need my business. I left. I called the phone and the cashier picked up telling me that they are closing at 1AM and can stop by to pick it up. I come here often with family and friends. The food is delicious and comes with generous servings and great price. They open early at 8am with breakfast selections but also closes late till 1am. We found this place by searching through yelp because Venus Tam food quality was not as good as before and notice staff changed and later found out it was sold to different owners. We were looking for the old flavors and comfort food feel and good thing this place is just nearby, I really wanted to give it 4 or 5 stars because they food was good when they first open and owner is there to make sure good food are server and excellent customer service are provided. Throughout the last couple of years owner is there during the rush and is depending on couple of servers that does not do justice to this place, yes they are short staffed at times but only for no more than 40mins within a small dinner rush, the male server always give a negative vibe to his customers, always neglect guest or if guest goes up to him to ask for stuff like a fork or missing items, he would rely "can't you see I am swamp and I can't get to you now" leaving customers with a bad vibe, the female server on the other hand tries hard but forgetful at times. So as far as service goes spot on 2 stars Now onto food items, quality had definitely seen better days, baked dishes are no longer moist but rather dry as Mojave desert, meats are rubbery, chow fun are all stuck together, etc to make things worst, I ordered the large size 1 liter lemon tea that I have been drinking for over 10 years from both places, male server came by and ask me what size do I want ? The rice porage didnt really have a taste so I didn't like that one. The special house noodle combination was really good. Chicken garlic wings was good and fresh. My wife and I been loyal customers of Fairwood Cafe for at least 4-5 years, we even recommended them to friends and families. However, we showed up today with our 5 months old new born. My son is allergic to soy product and he is still on breast milk. Therefore, we kindly asked the waitress to check with the kitchen and see if there's anything on the menu doesn't have soy sauce. The cook walked out from the kitchen and asked us to leave and never come back again. He told us to go home and cook for ourselves. I want to urge all customers of Fairwood Cafe! I've been here many times... can't believe I've never given a proper review! Fairwood Cafe is definitely one of those "local" joints. You wouldn't travel a far distance to get here, but if you live in the area, it's always an option due to the long hours. Whenever I go, it's usually about half packed with people enjoying some HK food. While the outside looks a little rundown, the inside is very bright and colorful. The food itself has been inconsistent, but the portions are generous. Their baked dishes are decent, but I got two mini chicken wings in my last baked pork chop dish, and the time before that I got one giant one (inconsistent). But I think the thing that makes Fairwood stand out is the service. The owner lady is very, very friendly. If you're somewhat of a regular customer, she'll remember your name for sure. The other servers are also friendly and helpful, way beyond what's expected at an Asian restaurant. Odd tidbit... the restrooms are located outside behind the building. It's kind of scary going at night, but when you gotta go, you gotta go. Since it's outside, the restroom is pretty gas station-like.
