This is a review for their breakfast sandwich. I have recently been ordering their breakfast sandwich and they have been very accommodating to preferences through online delivery. The star of the show for me was their Mojo Mustard, which I wish they sold online because it was a consistently fantastic substitute on the sandwich. Otherwise the bread, eggs and other details were thoughtfully put together and packaged, it was overall a very delightful experience that I'm looking forward to having again or potentially visiting in person someday. Thank you to whoever the sandwich saints are that made those for me while I was in the area and please bring the sandwiches over to the SF location, I can't seem to find them! read more

Generally unsatisfactory experience. First, I think it is the job of the restaurant/cafe owner to take steps to remove the crazy guy who is alternately talking very loudly to himself and panhandling from the parklet. He was there the entire time we were there, and made the experience unpleasant - not too mention that occasionally the guy was so loud I couldn't hear what my friend was saying. Second, I ordered using the online interface, which was supposed to text me when the food was ready. It didn't. I finally went in. I got food poisoning at this place. They don't have clean practices and are getting their customers sick. On top of that, their employees are really careless and don't want to be there. The mushroom panini was good, my order was taken down incorrectly or somehow there was a miscommunication... the cook was very rude and to fix my order the person that tried to help was very rude... the experience all together was terrible... the food was good but the cook was inconsistent he made the first salad with dressing on the side... I had a taste for mushroom panini which is how the order was mixed up the person that took the order forgot to change my order so she kept the original order on there... so I end up ordering two meals and the cook made the second salad with dressing on there so I literally just left it in the counter... so disappointing... the cook needs to find a different job the customer service sucks... read more

This place is my new favorite spot for pretty much anything in the East Bay. It has it all - magazines and newspapers when you want to chill and read by yourself, WiFi if you're studying, lots of table space for meeting up with people, and all sorts of great food, drinks, and dessert options. I came here the first time after running to Lake Merritt in search of coffee and a pastry. I got an almond milk latte and a chocolate chip cookie, costing me about $8 without tip. The latte was okay (I don't think I would come back purely for the coffee) but the chocolate chip cookie was DIVINE. I really think they have the best chocolate chip cookie I have ever eaten: it's thick, chewy, and has sea salt on top! The ambience here is so great. Lots of natural light, people watching, and really friendly baristas. I came back with my boyfriend two days later because I loved it so much, and we got spiced cider, a Waldorf salad, a decaf cappuccino, and another chocolate chip cookie. Farley's on Potrero Hill used to be my hangout about a decade ago (review: http://bit.ly/2izGnBh) but honestly, I had not been back for quite a while because so many other coffeehouses popped up closer to my home and well, you know how that goes... Yes, I know, I know...I never phoned, I never wrote. Anyway, this review isn't even about that location. One evening after work, I found myself in Uptown Oakland where the hip and happening appear to be bubbling up if you want to trust the local realtors. I just happened to strolling on this part of Grand Avenue and recognized the Farley's name from days of yore. And what exactly is 'yore' anyway? I did a double-take thinking I was back on Potrero Hill. I was impressed at the contemporary-meets-cozy set-up with the place with the signature magazine rack that I recalled from the original location. I ordered simply and had the $4 Pour Over (photo: http://bit.ly/2izJsBk) which I promptly took up to the mezzanine level where all the laptoppers were camping. Luckily there was a counter overlooking the main floor and front entrance (photo: http://bit.ly/2vyHanD), and the outlets were not as close which was presumably why none of the laptoppers took those spots. Obsessed with the vibes at Farley's. It kinda feels like hanging out in someone's living room with the cushy chairs and wood paneling. Everyone seemed cheerful and lively and the baristas were playing great music, so the energy was awesome. There's an upstairs and downstairs seating area. Unfortunately upstairs was kinda dirty. There were coffee stains on the wall where I was sitting and the counter looked like it hadn't been wiped down recently. Still, the good vibes and natural light made up for this for me. What made me knock the place a few stars was the quantity of food I got and the limited wifi. My mushroom panini tasted fine, but left me quite hungry. The wifi also did not satiate me. They kick you off after 2 hours and there's no way to get back on. Better than nothing I guess, but pretty annoying when you have a good workflow going and you lose your connection. Probably won't come back to work or eat again, but will come back to grab a beer or coffee and hang out in their very cute outdoor parklette area out front. read more

I usually swing by Farley's to grab a quick cup of coffee or latte before work. Parking itself may be a hassle (mostly metered parking), but It's conveniently located by 19th street Bart station. I've only gotten the coffee and the latte, but I really enjoy it! It has a nice bitter, but fragrant coffee flavor and more importantly, it's strong. It's not watered down at all! I recommend it if you need a caffeine fix! Usually, Farley's is pretty consistent; however, I will say that today was probably not a good day! I wanted a latte and they were out of milk except for almond, half and half, and whole milk! Perhaps they're out because it's the holidays, but it still seems a little off to me. Nonetheless, I got a latte with almond milk and it was still strong and delicious. It did not disappoint! I also got a banana bread today. Again, I'm not sure if it's the holiday, but it tasted a little stale. The edges and part of the middle were really hard. Perhaps, if it was warmed up for me, it wouldn't have been so obvious. Usually Farley's is consistent. Since I've been here a few times, I can honestly say that today is definitely an off day. Stopped by here for Oakland's Restaurant Week. It was really busy. All the tables were filled. While glancing I noticed that some tables are reserved for dining only, meaning no laptops. You'll have to find a designated table for that. Additional seating can be found upstairs but once this place fills up, you'll end up sitting on the wooden benches outside. Since it's ORW I decided to order off the preset menu. For $20 I got the turkey & apple sandwich on brie w/ black bean soup & a glass of white wine. The sandwich would have been better if they used real carved turkey meat or roasted turkey meat and not deli processed meat. The apple didn't really mesh well with the dijon sauce. Sandwich was edible but I've had better. The black bean soup was amazing! The wine was sweet & didn't leave my mouth dry like some do. Wasn't served in a wine glass tho. There are two registers which helps speed up the ordering process. Food pick up is towards the left of the line (they'll call your name when ready which can be hard to hear depending on where you are sitting & the level of noise). Farley's East has been a favorite of mine from even before I decided to make Oakland my home. They've recently done an expansion, in record time, I might add. They *might* have been down a week. Props for that. Their late hours have saved me from an early bedtime more times than I can count. These changes have brought in a more extensive menu and seating. I grabbed the Salad Nicoise and hubs got a BLT (came with a side of greens). Both were perfectly executed and have us wanting to return for more. But what got me here to write this review is the cold brew I whipped up last night from their House blend. It's refreshing and does not disappoint... and to be fair, the last few I've made had me stopping in for someone else's. The reno has also gifted us all with a penny gumball machine. I've read a number of reviews by patrons who were unhappy that they couldn't use their laptops while visiting Farley's East. I have no issue with that -- in fact, the owner's explanation makes plenty of sense to me -- but it was still at best a mediocre visit. I'm new to the area, and I met a coworker here a few weeks ago. Our order consisted of his latte, my hot chocolate, and an almond croissant. We sat down at a table, and when my colleague's name was called, he went up to grab the drinks. Only one of them was ready: his latte (or so he thought), so I told him to start and enjoy it while it was hot. He took a sip and immediately realized it was not his latte, but my hot chocolate. This was partly my colleague's mistake for not asking the barista which beverage this was, but it could also have been pretty easily prevented had he been told "Here is your hot chocolate. Your latte will be right out." Several minutes later, when his latte still had not come out, he went up to the counter to check in and learned that the staff had forgotten about it. By that point, I had tasted my hot chocolate and thought it was decent but not terribly hot, so I brought it up to the counter and asked if it could be reheated. I was told that it couldn't be because there was no microwave and since I had drunk from the cup, the drink could not be poured back into their equipment. I can appreciate that explanation...AND it would have been a nice gesture for the staff to offer to make another hot chocolate since mine had cooled down while I was waiting for the other drink we had ordered that they had failed to make (and because it was not all that hot to begin with), but I guess the staff didn't want to acknowledge an error on their part. Really nice coffee shop with a crazy good latte. Seriously, their house blend coffee is so good, I almost bought a bag. Also, if you do buy a bag, you get an 8 oz hot coffee for free! They also have a very good chai, which has a nice little bite to it (I LOVE a spicy chai, and this place was enough to satisfy me). Felt a little salty towards the one barista for being inconsistent about covid mask protocols. Here's why : 1. Witnessed barista holler at guest across the cafe and shame him for forgetting to mask up 2. Folks stayed longer at their tables than the 15-30 minute allotted time 3. Tables were spaced less than a foot apart and folks weren't wearing masks after they finished or began drinking or eating . I don't understand why you must shame one person and not holler and the folks sitting at tables not wearing masks while waiting for their food or beverages. Cashier lady was great. Farley's is pretty awesome. I usually do a pour over coffee with a tablespoon of butter (yup, they totally made it work for my KETOgenic diet). I love that they have the stamp card to reward you for buying with an eventual free drink. It's all overpriced - but has always been delicious. A friend of mine got the biscuit and claims to have jokingly had a religious experience with it - aka, it was the best she ever had. Chicken curry salad (so yum, get it) My only complaint - and as silly as it sounds the reason I won't go back. I asked for my reward card to get stamped after buying a $15 salad and tipping for carry out service I might add. The guy who checked me out said no because it was just for buying drinks. This makes no sense. One more note, sometimes they are a bit slow. Most probably don't have as high a standard as I do for service. But if your charging these prices, it's the small things that count and keep people like me who will spend the money anyway. Note: for the food, keep it up! read more

Where did you go when you ditched class? For me, a nice and quiet coffeeshop does the trick. My boyfriend and I had signed up for a weekend dance event, and the workshops that morning didn't interest us, so we chilled near Lake Merritt then went for coffee nearby at Farley's East. Interesting and eclectic place. There is seating available on the outdoor patio, indoors, and upstairs. The parklet is awesome, but unfortunately it was a little chilly and the seats were taken. I ordered at the front counter and found a seat. Originally I only planned to drink coffee, but their food menu caught my eye, specifically the frittata with pastrami, red pepper, tomato, and mixed cheese. I can't resist anything with pastrami. And it was quite good and filling! It was a little cold by the time it reached my plate, but oh well. There's definitely a theme of "self-expression" at Farley's. Chalkboards line the gender neutral bathrooms for messages of all kinds. Magazines fill the shelves inside the main section of the coffeeshop. So many options for light reading, especially if you're just coming here to pass the time like we were. Not my favorite coffeeshop but worth checking it out! read more

Farley's has shown incredible resiliency by quickly transforming their model from a coffee shop, to a one stop shop for all your quarantine needs! We tried the Chicken Tamale meal and really enjoyed every bite. The 2-person meal comes with two HUGE tamales, which are incredibly flavorful. It is served also with rice, beans, and a fresh slaw salad. We ordered a side of guacamole and it was the perfect touch to complete our meal. Two pretty hungry people could not finish it in one sitting, so I highly recommend the value here! Also splurged and got the strawberry shortcake. We had to assemble it ourselves but it was a delicious airy creamy dessert. Next, I want to try some of their other provisions like the salad dressing, breads, bolognese sauce and so much more! I always like the Cobb Salad at Farley's. It was the first time I did takeout. I noticed they raised their prices probably because of the beautiful renovation and expansion. The portion seemed larger in the box. I loved it but it is pretty steep to pay $13 for a salad (my other choice was going to be the mushroom panini for $9 but greens won over money today). Large chunks of chicken. I wanted to the chocolate chip slated caramel cookie that are homemade on site. But didn't want to pay the $2.50. A lot more food selections and premade food to go with the expansion. The sad thing was no one seems to be reading the magazines. I guess it's not the thing anymore. read more

I've only ever stopped by to grab a quick pastry and coffee, but I like Farley's a lot! They are friendly and have great goodies and coffee. Prices are a little high in my opinion but it's not unreasonable. Every time I pass Farley's it's always doing a good business--whether this is 8am or after 5pm! It's a great place to bring your laptop to work or read. I'll have to come back to try some of their food. 5 stars all the way! I love both the inside and outside of Farley's. There are designated spots to eat and chat, while other tables are available for working on your computer or writing your next novel. There's even an upstairs too so plenty of room to do what you do. The decorations and bits and bolts are all so creative, modern and positive. Lots of "No hate, no [insert bad thing here]". They also, and this was my favorite part, have a wall full of shelves of magazines. And these were like the latest and greatest issues from Wired to Essence to Time... I wanted to just bury my head in one the whole time. They also have a patio in the front decorated with vines, flowers, and nice red chairs and tables. It's perfect for a sunny Oaklandish day. I'm sure I'll find myself outside enjoying Farley's food soon enough. I just did a grab and go today, got a salt chocolate cookie (he gave me a free extra one! SCORE) and a ham and gruyere panini (fresh pressed heaven). Quick wait since I was the only one in line. The panini came with a surprise salad which was tangy and light. The sandwich itself was delicious and I just wanted more I finished up both halves so fast. And that cookie... ughh I have to be careful because I would order a bag of them sweet, tempting cookies. This was the first coffee spot I went to when I moved to Oakland two years ago. The staff is so friendly, the drinks are stellar, and the atmosphere is immaculate! I love that they feature local artists and go out their way to be one with the community. I love the new look. Farley's used to be much smaller and felt tense. I thought the vibe was more stressful than chill. Now that they've remodeled, the place feels much brighter and open. It also helps that the baristas were very friendly. They both seemed open to interacting and having lite conversation. In my previous trips to Farley's (before the renovation) I found the baristas to be somewhat cold. This was a quiet place to work on an acting dialogue with my scene partner. Food and drinks are great. The staffs are okay but there are times when they can be unfriendly. The wait takes long. Stumbled upon this great gem located in Uptown Oakland. First order, and all subsequent orders, was their tuna panini melt. So delicious at first bite! Comes with arugula, tomato & capers. Different touch, but love the capers on it! Acme toast is always perfectly crispy on the edges and soft with a nice crunch on the inside. Turkey harissa panini was okay, can't recall too much of the taste except that it wasn't bad. Grilled cheese panini with cheddar and mozzarella was really good too. Sparkling limeade was very tart and acidic, can't say it was sweet. Reminds me almost of kombucha. Not my liking. Love that they sold Third Culture's mochi dinuts and muffins. Since their demand for it went down during the pandemic, they've stopped selling it altogether. Supposedly Third Culture limits delivery order as well. Only complaint is that the kitchen closes promptly at 4pm. Even if you're in line before 4pm and you don't get to the register to order beforehand, you're out of luck - that's what once happened to me! Street parking on busy Grand Ave, but time will be your best bet. Overall, highly recommend this place if you want a good panini. read more
