I've been divulging in Fat Ben's baked goods for some time now and I've never been disappointed. A licensed home bakery, Chef Ben A. uses Instagram as a platform to promote his business. One look at his IG and you won't be able to deny his creative talent. Sadly, Covid-19 times have really hurt his business in terms of wedding and birthday cakes. Typical for such a creative genius, he's designed weekly boxes for pick up at his home licensed bakery in Mason. How the boxes work: He puts out a menu of the theme he's chosen for the week. Everyone is given a time to email him requesting a box (this is usually around 10am). You send your email exactly at that time and hope you get on the list. If you made it, you quickly get a confirmation email with all the details for pick up times/location and how to pay. Pick up is typically a Saturday or Sunday from 10a-1p. Some of my favorites include: strawberry pizza pockets, cinnamon toaster strudel, prosciutto and brie pastry... he's so creative! I scored a cookie box from Fat Ben's Bakery and they were nothing short of amazing. I've been following the bakery instagram page for a while (which I highly recommend) and this was my first attempt to get in on one of the boxes advertised. They can sell out super fast so it's best to set reminders for yourself if you want to get one! Anyway back to the cookies. Um. YUM. Such a variety box, from strawberry lemonade sugar cookie to a jalepeno corn bread whoopie pie, tiramisu cookie pie to curry sugar cookie and a fruit cookie pizza to a flower wreath cookie (and more). They were worth the 45 minute drive one way from NKY to Mason and I feel like that says it all. When eating the cookies, we had some family over for a very small bday party (blame COVID) and we cut the cookies up and shared them among the 10 of us. I think everyone enjoyed them! When I stumbled upon these miraculous pastry creations on Instagram, I was smitten. He doesn't have a storefront, but he does occasional pop-ups and takes customer orders. I went to one of his pop-ups at Kenwood mall. It was only a half hour in to the scheduled few-hour block, but he was all but sold out! We scooped up a couple of cookies, and they were darn tasty. I wish we'd gotten there early enough to try the mini cakes and the toaster pastries. However, and this is for me a big HOWEVER, I was dismayed to see him go from using his phone to reaching into the food case with his bare hands to pick out our cookies and bag them to accepting our payment. Personal hygiene around food is a must for me, and I know most bakeries use wax tissue to handle the baked goods. read more

He will go above and beyond to find the flavor or design that you are looking for! His pop up shops sell out so quick! Cool and fun colors and decorations, creative ideas for pastries! Excited to have a new go-to in Arts/Legal district of downtown Cincinnati. Fatben's was an easy walk from the office and offered a variety of delicious options. Ask for the surprise items you won't be disappointed - I wasn't. I headed there with the intention of getting a donut and walked away with a homemade savory egg biscuit sandwich, probably the best I have ever had. And, I couldn't pass up the specialty cookies and the birthday cake scone each of which I am sure will be as delicious. What a fun spot with a walk-up window at 8th and Sycamore - and if you are lucky you will meet Ben - an added joy! read more

I've been following Fat Ben and his beautiful pastry creations on Instagram for the longest time, but never had a chance to actually feast my eyes or tase buds on any of his delectible creations until his newly-opened order window at the new Crown Republic Gastropub! I, of course, stopped by on the grand opening and ran into Fat Ben himself! There is plenty of street parking (no payment necessary till 9am - holla!) which makes it the perfect week day morning stop on your way into downtown. His order window is right on the corner of 6th and Sycamore and offers scones, muffins, pastry pockets (think Pop-Tarts without the preservatives), breakfast sandwich, and much more (he mentioned some gluten-free cinnamon rolls in the oven and the most rich brownie I've ever sampled). The prices are typical for a pastry shop ($3.50 for my pastry pocket, $6 for a breakfast sandwich, etc.) and I hardly can't wait to come back. Is tomorrow too soon? ;) read more
