GIVING IN, FINALLY: I remember coming to Los Angeles twenty-six years ago and seeing a restaurant called Fatburger driving around the Southland. Didn't sound very heart-healthy, despite a mention in the classic R&B group Klimaxx's "Meeting in the Ladies Room", I had absolutely no interest trying it. Fast forward to 2015 and I have a graduating senior who prefers burgers above all else. Thus, another installation in our Burger Barnstorm around the Santa Clarita Valley. We volunteer at the Santa Clarita Public Library on weekends and we hit a burger joint en route and on the Old Road in the Westbridge Village Shopping Mall containing BevMo and Big Wangs, it is easily accessible and not as crowded and some of the more popular chain fast food spots making it a good choice when hungry or in a hurry. What I liked most about this restaurant was the options. Loved the Asian-influenced egg option, traditional bacon and a list of others as well as size of the patty. I'm a light eater but you can increase your ounces based on S, M, L, XL and XXL. They even have a wall of fame for those interested in risking regurgitation (eating the largest size in a challenge). Great char and well-seasoned burgers AND you could really taste the classic topping trio -- lettuce, tomato and pickles -- slathered with mayo and added catsup and mustard. Son enjoyed his bacon burger with cheese. Fatburger's thin cut fries were fresh, crunchy and on point. This place is as terrible as ever! The last time I reviewed it was on national cheeseburger day. They have not improved. The last time I reviewed them the owner called me. She promised to clean up the place and give me a refund. The place is worse then before and of course I never got my refund. Today I gave them another try because my daughter wanted to go and we thought that during Covid they may have had time to clean up the place. I was once again at Bank of America depositing some checks, and once again, exploring for lunchtime. I'd remembered going to a fatburger once or twice in the past, and had some favorable memories. I pulled on the door, and walked up to the counter. I was greeted and thanked for my patronage. Then I was barraged with questions. I was reminded of my first trip to Five Guys. Bewildered, confused, and hungry. Looking at the sign hanging, I decided upon the XXL. Yes. With all the normal things that go on it. With an iced tea. Yes. For here. I did my best to hold my composure while I answered the questions the nice girl asked me. Eventually I paid fifteen dollars, and walked away with a stick with a number. I sat down at a table, and looked at the receipt to try and figure out what the heck I had just ordered. A minute or two later, a tray was thunked in front of me. The burger was absolutely monstrous, living up to the name of the restaurant. I regretted my recent life decisions that resulted in the beast being placed before me. In retrospect, I hoped I had chosen something slightly smaller. Two patties sat between buns. Lettuce draped over the top like vines hanging in a minecraft tunnel underneath a jungle. Cheese and mayo drooped down like fangs of a hungry beast. A bag of fries sat next to the thing like an animal companion. Burgers come with "The Works" and that equals Bun, mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, relish, mustard, patty, patty, bun. (I added an extra patty when I upsized to XXL) Truly a mountain of meat and bread. had I wanted, I could have heaped all manners of additional items (for an additional charge) upon the burger. Bacon, onion rings, chili, a fried egg, more cheese, even a gluten free bun if I was feeling weird and freaky. Maybe someday I'll even take the challenge, where they pile a whole crap ton of stuff atop a burger, and if you eat it all, you get your picture on the wall. Not today though. Today I'm just checking the place out. I hefted the thing up and took a bite. It was good. I guess I got skinny fries in hopes of the name helping me to get skinny. Yeah. Not so much looking at the colossal burger. Oh well. It was really good. The iced tea was good. It was a ton of lunch, and after completing it, I wanted a nap. But, I had another four more hours of work. Challenging. I'll probably be back, but on payday, and after work. Because 15 for lunch is still a tad pricy. Thanks though! I took some time while digesting to find Valencia on the cup. Amongst the worldwide locations, it's totally in there. I had no idea this chain was so far reaching across the globe! Interesting! 11/26/17: Stopped in for a 'quick' bite on our way home (Thanksgiving weekend road trip). We ordered at 6:44 pm but didn't get our food until 7:12 pm (1-XXL burger w/egg, 1-chili cheese dog, 1-onion rings, 1-skinny fries). The place was busy but not crazy so it should not have taken 28 min for our food. From where I was sitting, I could watch each order getting put together. Finally, when our order was up, they picked up an order of fries that was sitting on the sidelines for quite some time - old fries. I spoke up and told them I want fresh fries so the young lady threw that one away and I was given a fresh order. The XXL burger: the meat was fresh but was overcooked & dry; the egg was fried hard so there was no yoke to add a creaminess to the burger which defeats the purpose of even adding an egg to the burger. The onion rings were okay - they were not seasoned. The chill cheese dog was okay but some parts of the chili were dark brown - I picked those parts off - who knows how long that was sitting, uncovered. We stopped in at Fatburger on our way up north recently and decided to give Fatburger a try. I ordered the chicken sandwich grilled and the hubby ordered a veggie burger. The chicken sammy was satisfying and was really the perfect size. It wasn't this oversized meal that you see at most places. I really liked that. My hubby thought his veggie burger was also tasty but thought they put way too much mustard in it so he ended up scraping off most of it. In addition, we both ordered a side of thick fries but I think our eyes were bigger than our bellies because neither of us finished it off. The burgers here are good. You can pick your own size to make sure you leave full. Meat is always well seasoned and never overcooked. Extras are available to spice things up. Fries are tasty and not too salty. The only part that's hard to justify repeat visits is the size of the restaurant (feels like a shoebox) and the prices (13 for a meal is a bit much). Lots of parking. The floors were filthy. From the front door all the way to under the table I was sitting at. I ordered a Large and added bacon, chili, egg and cheese. I love these additions. There were 2 ladies preparing the food and one young man taking orders and standing around (he could've been sweeping). I was also standing at the counter for a while before he approached me and asked "can I help you with something?". Um, yeah you haven't seen me place an order yet have you? Other than that, he was pretty tentative and informative to the customers. The beverage assortment is good. They have 10 soda flavors and a tea tower with 4 different teas. There were orders ahead of us, as well as delivery pickup orders. Staff was professional and courteous, and all wearing masks. Had a small and medium original, both were cooked and dressed right, though patties had started to cool. Fat fries were fully cooked, easy crunch and easy salt, just a bit cool. Normally, I would say that I am a fatburger fan. Back in the 90's I would crave so much for it. However, this location is not good at all. And unfortunately, I have had to trade up for a new model hamburger. The food was overcooked and not that good. Part of the problem is that Fatburger now has a lot of competition: Five guys, in n out, red robin, the Habit, to name a few. I used to think Fatburger was the sexiest burger in town. But I now realize that I was just living in a small town, and the other burger joints have totally seduced me. Fat Burger is expensive for a burger joint... but the beef in their burgers has good flavor, the patties are of a good size, and they're not overly greasy. The ingredients also seem to be fresh and of high quality. The fries are just so-so and the onion rings are kinda plain.... but the burgers are worth going back for time and again. I received a coupon with the address "26906 The Old Rd, Valencia, CA 91355" printed on the coupon. It was a buy one get one free. As is the purpose of a coupon, it motivated me to drive to this location to experience their food. Instead, I was told that they wouldn't accept the coupon. I gently contested that this coupon is specific to this location. One employee took the coupon to a back room and quickly returned. With little effort to serve me as the customer, I was told that their manager does not accept any coupons, and that she would fire them if they accepted one. I went into grab my order and was met with the same nasty disposition and stare....There was no "hello how can I help you" or "thank you". I think it is only decent for you to to do both. I was desperate Sunday night driving home on an empty stomach so I decided to try Fatburger again. The interior was clean and the workers were friendly and outgoing. I decided on the L(King burger) with all the basic toppings and added the mandatory cheese, bacon and egg for an additional fee. I expected the worst, but out came a pretty big ass burger. It was big and wonderfully messy but...the meat was really dry, I mean to the point where I had to squirt some ketchup on it before each bite. If the meat was juicy, this would be an awesome burger. Biggest downside was that it was a 90 degrees plus day when we stopped by, and AC was not real strong so it was probably 80 degrees inside the restaurant. Four stars for food.
