Arriving late in the afternoon, the overall selection was limited but the atmosphere was Parisian, right down to the abruptness of the clerk. This is one of my favorite bakeries in Honolulu. They bake a variety of rustic breads, pastries, cakes and cookies that are almost too pretty to eat! They have a daily loaf special and if you ever get a chance to try their olive loaf, definitely buy it! My favorite pastry from Fendu is their lychee tart - flaky crispy crust with a custard center and a lychee fruit on top. It is so unique and tasty! Fendu is tucked away in the back of Manoa Marketplace and does not have seating indoors so I suggest stopping by here after lunch to grab and go or treat yourself to a pastry after going on one of the popular hikes nearby ;) read more

We went for the Turkey and Ham Panini and Wagyu Burgers and left with much more . I can't say this loud enough but those Chocolate Croissants were the bomb. I can't say that I'm an expert, but I've had a few while in Paris, but it was an explosion of flaky laminated dough heaven. It was so crispy and flaky! I love the food here, but be prepared to wait. Parking is ample in the Mānoa Marketplace shopping center, but it fills up around meal times. I really like their butternut squash soup when they have it, and their pizzas and baked goods are solid. One of my favorites is the pesto pizza, which is topped with large slices of tomato and generous gobs of goat cheese. Be prepared for a kanak attack, but it's very tasty. We ordered a takeout for lunch which included sandwiches and a pizza. They told us to come in about 15 minutes, and when we did it ended up taking maybe 45 minutes for our order due to a mix-up. I recently put the food from here into me and it was nice. My girlfriend is vegetarian, so both of us need to order vegetarian food so that she can steal my food. The staff was very friendly and willing to make accommodations which was very appreciated She ordered the petite croissant and egg sandwich without the bacon. This sandwich was very good and the muenster cheese was totally so good. I ordered the fendu breakfast Panini without the ham on it. The only complaint I have about fendu is the fact that they advertised shallots on this sandwhich, and there was only one very lonely tiny peice of shallots. I need more shallots in my life, and fendu did me dirty. The desserts were excellent and seem to be a main selling point for Fendu. The buttermilk and fresh berry Panna Cotta was cute and also very tasty. The pear chocolate Danish was amazing and I would highly recommend it. The desserts at this bakery is affordable and elegant. Most importantly it tastes so delicious. My favorite is the Panna cotta. The texture was soft and strong in vanilla flavor. The fruit toppings were also fresh. Unfortunately, the sandwhich we got was not very good. It was comparable to Safeways cold deli sandwiches. The meats were mediocre and the bread was hard and cold. When I think "Tea Time", this is the bakery that I head to in Manoa Valley, Fendu Boulangerie. They have a special sweet bread they make on Saturday's only, get there early or it will be sold out! Or you can place an order. On a daily basis they have the best scones that are the perfect size and tastes heavenly, and countless other assorted pastries, breads, loaves, puddings, tarts, cookies... During the Holidays they make an exceptional panettone that is very moist and fruity, perfect holiday bread and great for gifts that everyone will love. The only reason I gave them 4 out of 5 stars is because of customer service. One of the cashiers is so friendly and helpful, the other makes you feel like you are bothering her when you shop there. We visited for lunch, and the food was amazing! My husband, son and I all had sandwiches. I got the basil pesto chicken panini which was great. The flavor was strong and everything was fresh. For desert I ordered the lilikoi cheesecake. It was incredible. Reasons why I'm not giving it 5 stars: -The drinks were expensive and the prices weren't labeled. We just grabbed 2 drinks from the fridge and they were almost $9 together. Next time I'll bring something or go next door to Longs. - we got the gourmet grilled cheese for our son. It was just as expensive as the other sandwiches which had a lot more toppings, but didn't come on the same bread. It came on regular sandwich bread instead of the panini bread that mine and my husband's came on. - there's not much seating. There were only a few tables outside. I didn't say cheap tho, so we'll leave it at that but maaaaaan. It's like buying something brand name over generic. Like, you can see/taste/ why it costs more. Anywho here's my take: Pros: -Baguettes: Really good; crusty/chewy. They toast so well and retain all that texture and taste. -Croissants: Soooo good, but you gotta eat it same day as they're crispy/chewy. Next day, it lots it's crisp, but was still good. -Carrot Cake! OMG, this was my fave, fave, fave. So moist and dare I say a bit 'wet' with syrup like carmelization. This doesn't have or need a cream cheese frosting. It's amazing without it. -Parking is easy as it's in the Manoa Marketplace, right next to Longs baby! The So-So: The Blueberry muffins...they were alright. Not stand out, as they tasted like regular old blueberry muffins. Cons: -Okay, it is not cheap and I totally respect that the ingredients and skill/artistry it takes to make this type of breads and pastries warrants the price. I was disappointed after going to Fendu Boulangerie. I decided to try this place because it was nearby and the pastries looked good on yelp. I ordered a croissant breakfast sandwich with egg, bacon, cheese, turkey and ham, and a chocolate croissant. The food tasted good but nothing special. I was disappointed in the prices. For 3 items, it costed $15. I thought this place was too pricey. If you don't mind spending more than something is worth, than I would still come here. Here yesterday to pick up Lilikoi Cheesecake for Keith-son's Birthday. It's his favorite this year. This shop is sooo tiny that people are whispering in your ear as you stand in line. Was going to get coffee but the man behind me whispered "not here, it's not very good".....yikes! So two Lilikoi Cheesecakes it was. After being rung up I asked for a mango scone, $1.05 each for a tiny scone. Love scones so I thought they would be worthy of a try. No so, too cakelike and moist. I love the sandy scones that you have to put butter or clotted cream on. While the flavor is there the texture is all wrong. Sticking to the cheesecake in the future. I give this bakery 5 stars just for their croissants! That's right! I woke up this morning on a mission - find the best croissant. Where did I go to start my search...wait for it...Yelp! That is right - and again, the Yelp community did not disappoint. After reading a few reviews I decided this was the place to go - OK also the fact that it is a french bakery did help! I went up to Manoa with a little anticipation - hoping it was as good as everyone said and trying not have any expectations, just in case. I parked right in front of the bakery which is on the far left of the mall next to Longs Drugs. As I walked to the door a saw a small line - now the bakery is not very large, but very clean and has a nice "Boulangerie" feel to it. Just trust me on that one. :) There was a small line and from my vantage point in the back of the line I could see their regular croissant - golden brown and looking flaky (from the back of the bakery now!) and their ever so lightly dusted with powdered sugar, chocolate croissant. Guess which one I went for....both. I am not going to lie. The croissant was warm, light and flaky, with just the right hint of butter to round it all off - I literally had a croissant moment - I have not had a good croissant until that first bite. It was a combination of of - "Man why have I not been here before "idiot" thought and "Wow am I glad I drove up here for this." I turned around and went back in for one more regular croissant, I was saving the chocolate one for later. :) The chocolate croissant was equally as brilliant - light and fluffy layers of pastry sounding a dark chocolate center - it simply melts in your month. They have Banana Bread, Carrot Cake, Pumpkin Bread, homemade Cranberry and Mongo Scones, Mango and Lychee Danish, French Onion Soup....and the list goes on. I am definitely recommending going there for their pastries, but will also look to have lunch up there soon and update this review on their lunch items. The lychee was a little dried out, but you could still taste the fruit itself. The pear galette was also yummy. Im not exactly sure what type of filling was under the pears, but it was damn good. Fendu is a little gem in the heart of beautiful Manoa. This small bakery is full of yummy eats both sweet and savory. There has never been anything that I didn't like from Fendu, however some of my favorites that I order often are: Sweet: dark chocolate brownie lychee tart chocolate mac nut cookie chocolate croissant mint macaron Savory: Grilled veggie panini Wagyu beef burger Egg and bacon petite croissant breakfast sandwich Olive loaf (bread loaf) Mushroom pizza They also have fresh baked breads and a specialty bread is baked daily, check the window for the "loaf of the day" Sweets range from $2-$6 each and sandwiches are on average around $8 (give or take a couple $$). Pizzas are a little shy of $20, but the ingredients are fresh and high quality. If you are planning on ordering a meal, you will probably wait 5-15 minutes, but that's just because they make everything fresh, and it's worth the wait. Place your order then go and do errands around the corner at Longs. Fendu Boulangerie is a place where Francophiles like moi can enjoy making obnoxious douche-worthy statements because we think we know it all when it comes to French cuisine because we've done a short stint in France. We like to say things like, "Fendu makes the best pain au chocolate in Hawaii"; "This is the closest thing to an authentic boulangerie in Hawaii, but it doesn't even compare to the bakery down the street from my dorm in France"; "I wish they had authentic brioche." Then we like to tell our lame France stories about drinking coffee at the cafe, dining at the most amazing hidden local restaurants, taking long walks in the park, and then we'll tell you that "Midnight in Paris" was the BEST movie in 2011. You get the point. Still, the chocolate croissants at Fendu are really good! They're rich and flaky, and I think they use good chocolate which makes it stand out from other bakeries. Sometimes they can be a bit too greasy for my tastes, but they're definitely worth trying. I've tried some of Fendu's other sweet treats and didn't come across any that I disliked. The baguettes are really good too, better than anything you'd find at a Saint-Germain in town. On my most recent visit I had the Hamakua Mushroom pizza, and it was okay; nothing to rave about, but not bad. Overall, I like Fendu Boulangerie. Whenever I have to go to Manoa Shopping Center for something I'll always stop by and pick up a small treat. My mom and I recently visited Fendu Boulangerie for lunch. I had my heart set on trying some of their sandwiches, some of which are only available for lunch. The small café was busy, with most customers waiting for their take-out orders. I say take-out just because there isn't really anyplace to enjoy your meal here ... there are a few tables outside of Fendu, but most people just get take-out. We didn't take long to order because we had looked at the menu beforehand, but our sandwiches took 10-15 minutes to prepare. In the meantime, my mom and I walked to Breadbox and some of the neighboring businesses to see if they had anything interesting. My mom's sandwich was really good, but I probably wouldn't order mine again. The bread in hers tasted really fresh and the flavors blended together nicely. I wouldn't mind visiting Fendu again, but I would just order something different for myself. Here's what we got: "Gourmet Grilled Cheese Panini": This sandwich is only available after 11 a.m. and you have to allow for an extra 12 minutes of cooking time. This definitely sounded like a gourmet option, as it included fresh mozzarella, gouda, Vermont cheddar and Parmesan reggiano cheeses grilled on the eatery's country sandwich bread. This sandwich seemed promising as well because I saw lots of photos of it on Yelp. However, I was really disappointed because of the bread. The pieces of bread were so hard that they tasted like cardboard. It was really tough to eat the sandwich because of it ... each bite was super hard! That was a shame, considering that the cheesy medley was on point. The cheese combination was amazing and I could definitely taste a little bit of each cheese. It's too bad the super hard bread ruined this dish. "Chicken Cordon Blue Panini": My mom ordered this sandwich, which turned out to be the eatery's saving grace. I enjoyed her sandwich a lot more than I did mine. This sandwich entailed tenderloin chicken grilled with black forest ham, sweet onions, mayo, gouda and swiss cheese and farm tomatoes. My mom's sandwich was delicious! I liked the moist, tender, thick chunks of chicken, and there wasn't actually too many onions throughout the sandwich. The bread that comprised this sandwich wasn't too hard, either. The blend was great and I would order this sandwich for myself, no questions asked. "Basil Pesto Chicken Panini": If I ever try another sandwich from here again (that's not the "Chicken Cordon Blue"), this is one of my next options. It features chicken tenderloin sautéed with Hawaiian salt and black pepper that's grilled on a rustic bread bun and topped with bacon, mayo, fresh tomatoes, shallots and goat cheese. I love goat cheese, so I'm sure this sandwich would actually be up my alley. "Fendu Breakfast Panini": This breakfast option intrigued me, and if I'm ever here for breakfast, this panini would be first on my to-try list. It includes eggs, basil pesto, shallots, fresh mozzarella cheese and prosciutto de parma ham. The Bakery: I still haven't been able to pronounce the name of this place but what gets me is the freshly served pastries that have melt in your mouth crust and a light sweetness to add to the overall flavor. The pricing is a little on the 'expensive' side, but for pastries like this, you'll probably want to at least get just one (try one every day/week/etc). You're mainly assisted by one lady who is nice and friendly, but the real treat is what's in that brown bag she hands you once you place your order. Favorites of Fendu Boulangerie: The flakiness of the pastries and the subtly of the sweet flavors in each creation are the exact memories of Fendu Boulangerie. Although the bakery isn't open on Mondays (when I need breakfast the most), when I do stop by the pastries are always ready and fresh. One taste of Fendu Boulangerie's Buttermilk and Fresh Berries Panna Cotta and I was giddy like a schoolgirl before her first concert. Yes, my darlings, the panna cotta here is that incredible!!! In other news, this is a good spot for a simple, relaxed lunch with friends. It's a small bakery so there are no tables inside but you can order food and enjoy the weather as you dine at one of the tables outside. My friend and I ordered the Basil Pesto and Goat Cheese Pizza and Curried Chicken Salad Sandwich to share. The pizza sounded amazing but honestly did not live up to expectations. We both felt the goat cheese actually didn't go well with the pesto--mozzarella might have been better? Also, I am no Master Chef but I am certainly a fan of the show. As Gordon Ramsay would say, each bite of a dish should be the same. This was certainly not the case with pizza we got because of the arrangement of toppings on the pizza (check out the pic I took). The first bite was full of goat cheese; the second bite, tomato; and the rest, pesto. The crust, however, was awesome! All in all, this particular pizza needs some work but is not disastrous. I've been here only twice and both times the service was terrible. The first time, I dismissed it because the bakery was packed. The second time, my best friend and I were the only ones there! Usually, when I go into a bakery this fancy, I like to look at everything. But I felt rushed by the person behind the counter, so I ordered 2 cranberry scones and a Diet Pepsi, and we left. To be fair, the worker looked like she was in pain, and so I wondered why she was working alone. I've passed by this place SO many times but I've never tried it. I didn't realize that it had such good reviews and was so delicious. If you know me, you know that I'm a cheese monster and will frequently need two types of cheese dishes satisfied. 1) GRILLED CHEESE. 2) Mac and Cheese. Fendu has an amaaazing grilled cheese sandwich. It's one of my favorites. They use a variety of cheeses but it blends together perfectly to create cheesy heaven in every bite. I also love the lychee streusel (kinda like a danish). It's flaky and sweet and has a touch of (but not overwhelming) lychee flavor. It's not overly sweet but extremely well balanced. I also had their mini mango scone. Scones are typically kind of dry, but the scone here felt a bit more like a biscuit than a scone. I mean it was still delicious but I didn't feel like it was a "scone". Their sandwiches and pizzas are pretty good. But it is a little on the pricey side for a sandwich. I know cheaper lunch places for a decent sandwich. But I mean, the food is really good and I'm sold on their grilled cheese. Not sure what to say about the service. There was only one person working everytime I've been there. Have wanted to try this place out for years and finally got to Manoa to try Le Crepe Cafe so of course I had to stop at Fendu. It's a small place so only 2, 3 at most can fit at a time. Seems like a popular place for lunch. People were calling in their orders (best way to do it from th e looks of things - they have a pick up counter). Since I had just eaten a large breakfast i I contented myself with some sweets to bring home. Their pear and cream cheese tart was awesome. Great crust, nice balance of pears and cream cheese. I definitely would try it, or some other fruit and cream cheese tart again. Pumpkin bread had chocolate chips and nuts. I believe all pumpkin breads should have chocolate chips because the flavors go so well together so I was pleasantly surprised! I prefer no nuts but I do understand most people like nuts in their quick breads. The texture was lighter than I expected and just moist enough. If it had been a little more moist I would have enjoyed it more but then some of the lightness may have been lost. Mango scone wasn't eaten until the next day so I'm not certain of how the texture was supposed to be, but I liked that it still had some moistness and the mango flavor was good. It was great with a past of butter. It's a little high priced but I guess that's expected since the pastry choices will differ from Day to Day. Not sure why ppl like the mango scone so much but we found it dry. Try the Fendu breakfast panini. Nice, crispy and warm. Our favorite is the pear danish. Their cinnamon roll lacks enough cinnamon. Haven't tried their desserts yet but will try next time. read more
