I've had their boba in China when I was on vacation there so was so happy when they opened in the US. I remember their chewy golden bubbles and delicious milk tea. I think they rebranded from THE KOI (popular in Singapore) to 50LAN (popular in Taiwan). I've tried both the koi and 50LAN in their respective countries and this store doesn't quite hit the mark. The prices are double, maybe even more compared to asia prices, which is understandable because it's NYC. However, I expect the same quality. Their boba is SUPER inconsistent. Sometimes cooked, sometimes half cooked, doesn't really taste like anything. My friends who visited all feel the same about the inconsistency as well. Still a little confused on the rebranding because it seems like they're using the same decoration... but hey, whatever works. Probably wouldn't go again though. read more

I got the jasmine milk tea with golden bubble. The flavor was a lot lighter than other jasmines I've had. There wasn't really a strong floral taste like some jasmines have. Their boba is special because it's kept in the original color and they're smaller. Personally I think I prefer when the boba balls are bigger because you can really get the chewiness. Even though the boba was chewy in this drink, it was a little too small to chew. I got it 70% sweet and it was perfect. I usually order 100% sweet; but the store worker said that the recommended sweetness is 50% sweet. read more

The boba here is soooooo good! I highly recommend the mango green tea macchiato for those who like fruity teas. It has such a refreshing and not too sweet taste with a great floral essence as well. My friend and I visited this location on a Saturday evening. The store was clean and the staff were very friendly. I believe because this is a new location they were handing out stickers and postcards with your order (though this may also be regular occurrence - I'm not sure). They also provide a wet wipe to wipe your drink with. I ordered a Mango green tea macchiato (~$7 after tax) and my friend ordered a Ceylon black tea latte with golden bubbles (also ~$7). The macchiatos are served with a small knife instead of a straw as you are suppose to pierce it and sip the drink so you get both the sweet foam (not cheese foam) and the tea. My friend and I both enjoyed our drinks but we didn't feel they were anything special considering the price. If you're in the area, I think this a good spot for bubble tea but I wouldn't make a special trip here. read more

I had to stop by FIFTYLAN after finding out it was the American branch of one of my favorite boba shops in Singapore - KOI. My go-to is the honey milk tea with less ice and regular sugar. They had to make a new batch of the golden boba once I got around to ordering, so I decided not to wait and just go with no toppings. While I do think the Singaporean locations were better, the milk tea here was still pretty good and had a strong tea flavor! read more

Ever since moving into the area I've been looking for a go-to boba spot... and this might be it!! I've only tried two of the drinks so far, but my thoughts: - Golden Bubble Milk Tea: my preferred drink here (at 50% sweetness). Reminds me a bit of Boba Guys/Lazy Sundaes in that it's not excessively sweet or thick/creamy (like Kung Fu or Gong Cha for instance), so I don't feel terrible after finishing it - Peach Macchiato (basically peach tea with a sweet cream/foam topping): I cannot possibly imagine what 100% sweetness tastes like because I got 25% and thought it was plenty sweet! Overall solid drink but I will caveat by saying I don't generally love fruit teas. The only reasons I gave 4 and not 5 stars: 1. it leans a bit pricey 2. their golden bubbles isn't really my favorite-- the texture is consistently good (a right amount of chewy), which is great, but they're a bit smaller than 'average' and not very sweet -- some people might prefer this, but I personally like more sweetness in the boba even if the drink itself is less sweet read more

Walking into FIFTYLAN Union Square, the immediate impression is that the restaurant knows how to look appealing. From the boba tea statue out front to the clean white tables, FIFTYLAN has a beautiful interior, almost to the level of grand. The service was alright, although there was unfortunately no table they put the drink out on like Starbucks or Dunkin. With many people being there, I was nervous I'd miss my drink when it came out. There was no way to know which end of the long table they'd call out my randomized ticket number they had just assigned to me. The whole system just felt inefficient, so if you're in a rush, I wouldn't recommend. The tea took significantly longer for them to make compared to tea places in the area. The results, however, made it worth it. Now, I have absolutely zero idea how the other FIFTYLAN locations fare when it comes to overall taste, but this boba was splendid. Easily the greatest piece of it was the unique type of boba my milk tea was prepared with, some sort of golden variant. The taste of this boba was this indescribable tangy type flavor, but so subtle. They do NOT have any other type of boba, and that includes the traditional black balls, nor do they have pudding (as I was disappointed to hear). They have coconut jelly as an alternative if you're not down with the new type of bubbles. Do not come here if you aren't ready to try something new; this is a new bubble tea experience. If you are, however, get ready for a tasty drink! TLDR: Sweet tea with unique boba and a delightful, sorta fruity/luscious finish. All the drinks are for to-go at the moment, I ordered the cold bubble green milk tea, I am pretty satisfied with the proportion of sugar, milk and tea used in the drink. I got 70% sugar and less ice. They recommend 50%. The sweetness was good. Their boba is golden colored. Boba is on the smaller side but not too small, and soft & chewy. I prefer the regular sized ones. They do give a lot of boba. It's quite pricey for a medium (almost $7) While it's pretty good, I don't see myself coming again anytime soon read more

Appreciated how their top 5 popular flavors were displayed right away next to the menu.. Also love how you have option to control sugar levels and ice levels. I got their top popular flavor, golden and I have to say it was just ok. The small tapioca balls weren't my favorite, but glad I tried it. Finally, a boba place near Union Square that offers real milk (those drinks are referred to as Lattes), simple syrup and brewed teas over non-dairy powders, fructose, and artificial flavors, although some of their drinks do use the non-dairy powder (those drinks are referred to as Milk Teas). You can customize the sugar and ice levels. I've had: - Ceylon Black Tea Latte: good standard milk tea. I liked it with 100% sugar - Matcha Latte: good and I like 100% sugar - Brown Sugar Fresh Milk: it had a burnt taste to it, kind of like molasses. I wouldn't order again - Mango Green Macchiato: this is a flavorful, refreshing tea with a sweet cream topping. I had it with 100% sugar but next time I'll go with 75% or 50% because the cream is already sweetened Their small is a 12oz which is really small compared to Boba Guys' 16oz small but the prices are the same so that's why I docked off one star. The bubbles here are great, and the tea is great, but the fruit teas have almost no juice. It's very different from the original 50Lan in Taiwan. They are missing some of the best flavors that they have in Taiwan, like passion fruit and lemon. read more
