Probably the best NYC unique milk tea place that I've stumbled across in the city so far! Came by on a Thursday around 4PM and it was packed. Waited about 5 minutes to order and another 10 for my order. The location is oddly narrow so there isn't much space to wait around for your order. I ordered a large golden bubble milk tea with regular sugar and ice. Interestingly, their recommended sugar and ice levels are 50% sugar and less ice. At first was skeptical since I never order sugar that low but it was actually a good level of sweetness. Moving onto the drink itself, I thought it was pretty solid! The black tea taste was prominent and combined well with the milk. The pearls here are smaller than your average pearl but not small enough to be a small pearl if you know what I mean. Not a fan of the pearl size but I will say the pearls were really good. The only real downside to this place is its price point. I ended up paying $7 + tax which seems pretty hefty than what I'm used to paying for milk tea. Can't see this as my go to location due to the price but I could see myself coming back every once in awhile if I'm around Union Square! read more

Had the milk tea at 50% sweet and less ice -- it was delicious! There was PLENTY of boba (which I feel like many shops might skimp out in). The boba had a great bite to them, I really enjoyed it. Also had coconut jelly in there for some more flavor and texture. Price and service was alright - it was quite slow for an empty shop when I went. In terms of seating - it's just a small seating space (no tables). So it's not a cafe for one to really work or anything at - it's definitely good to just have your boba/catch up with pals. I've heard about Fiftylan for the first time in a Taiwan travel vlog. I never thought the shop would make it to NYC but apparently it's been here for a while. I was in the neighborhood for another errand and saw Fiftylan so I decided to get the peach green tea macchiato. It's peach green tea with milky foam on top - I don't think it's the usual cheese foam because it's not salty at all but it's sweet like heavy cream with sugar in it. As others suggested, the milk foam is sweet and 25% sugar drink was just the right sweetness for me. I really liked the drink. Unfortunately macchiato series don't have topping options so I couldn't get their signature golden bubbles. I'll try them next time I'm there. During 5/22/21-6/30/21, the store has a campaign where you when you buy eight drinks and collect stamps on the coupon card, you'll get a free 16 oz ice cream black/green tea. I'm not sure if I am willing to get eight drinks in a bit over a month but I will try to go again soon. read more

50 Lan is my all time favorite boba shop from Taiwan. I was surprised to have found one in NYC! The milk tea was on point and the boba was quite fresh. I was hoping that they would have the same menu as the one in Taiwan with small boba but I'll take what they got since we can't travel to Asia too easily now. My only feedback is that I wish their hours of operation were longer since they close at 7-8PM. But if you can catch them while their open, I would recommend this spot for boba! read more

This places makes me so nostalgic for taiwan! (though not quite as good/cost effective as their taiwan branch tho) They are known for their unique golden bubbles, which are more chewy and smaller than the typical black boba, and add an interesting texture. The konjac jelly toping is also very interesting, it's such a unique texture. It's feels almost "crunchy" in a way, and has a mild sweetness to it. One thing about this joint is that they add so much of the topping, so the ratio of the tea/drink to toping is always not even. I always end up with a cup full of toppings at the end of it. i was so excited to try fiftylan / koi, as i had heard great things about their international locations, but i was pretty disappointed. their best seller the golden milk bubble tea was basically milk with boba, which was really annoying. i can expect that from a random bubble tea place, but not a well known Taiwanese brand that just opened here. i struggled to taste any tea flavor at all, so for me it was a waste of money. also i felt like it was way pricier than other bubble tea places in the city, including tip, it was 9 dollars. i thought the golden boba was cute and good, but what's the point if it's not in something worth drinking. read more

Such a cute and convenient bbt place by the park! I loved the modern ambiance decoration inside. There is some seating by the wall. Sadly they did not have bubbles when we went and so we were not able to try them, but I really enjoyed my Hazelnut milk tea! Not many bubble tea places have this flavor so I really enjoyed it. They recommend 50% sugar and less ice however I find 50% to be still too sweet, so I would say 30% sugar and less ice is the way to go. This is one of their newer locations since the one in Greenwich Village was shuttered and was still known as Koi. During my last visit here, I had their large green tea latte with bubbles (boba on the West Coast?). My drink took a while to make since the matcha powered was freshly whisked. The green tea flavor was very apparent and did a good job as an afternoon pick-me-up. The bubbles they use here aren't the softer and chewier black bubbles that most are accustomed to. Here, they are orange, smaller, and slightly crunchier. Overall, I enjoyed my drink. But I thought the drink was on the overpriced side as the total came out to $7-$8. I believe the toppings are free if you upgrade to a large drink. They also offer a rewards program if you're frequent visitor. I went there basically everyday with my pals when I was studying abroad in Singapore in 2017 and hadn't had any since. their green tea macchiato is my favorite - creamy and sweet milk cap with floral jasmine tea. would recommend getting 0% or 25% sugar because the milk cap is sweet! Decent milk tea option near Union Square. Got the original with 70% sugar and honey boba. The honey boba wasn't super sweet and it wasn't the best pearls I've had, but they did give a lot. Usually i find myself with a little bit of pearls leftover, but with the ice, it felt like I had way more pearls by a long shot. It felt like I had five sips of tea before I ran out. I think if the ratio was a little bit better, I would have enjoyed the bubble tea a lot more. I do like that at least for the tea, the tea flavor was super strong. This is actually a 3.5 star review rounded up to 4. The milk tea is decent. It has tea flavor. However what they're known for is their golden boba but their boba is so hard that it is difficult to finish the drink. It seems like it isn't fully cooked because you can see the starch on the inside of the golden boba and it is more translucent on the outside of the boba. If this is their recipe, then they should let corporate know that that is not a good recipe. The boba tastes way too hard! Not tasty at all! It's also bland. They might need to change the receipe to soak it in honey or something if the name is golden boba. I definitely would not get the milk tea with the golden boba. I hope they do something about their boba so that it can be better so they can continue to stay in business because I support small businesses especially if it's something they can fix. read more

A friend of mine came to visit NY and when he saw that there was a Fiftylan, he made it a must go to on our itinerary for the day. He's from Taiwan and he was super excited to see that there was one in NY. When we arrived, there was basically no line. The place is small, but the vibe is nice, simple, and clean. It was a pretty hot day so I wanted something more on the refreshing and light side, which is why I ended up choosing the peach green tea with the golden boba. Specifically, I also asked for less ice and 25% sugar because I don't like my drinks too sweet. The tea itself was good and the sugar level was just what I was looking for in my drink. Definitely light, refreshing and fruity. Sometimes, I feel like the fruit drinks taste artificial or overly fruity if that makes sense. The golden boba is smaller than probably most boba at other places, which I didn't have any particular feelings towards. I mean my favorite topping is sago, and that is way smaller. As for texture, it is noticeably chewier...at least I thought it was. Again, not a bad thing for me. I liked it personally but just know going in those are the things about their boba that were different for me. Of course, there is the obvious color of the boba too. I'm not a "connoisseur" of this drink category by any stretch of the imagination, and in fact it was my first time. So cheers to that! I was always curious what those little balls tasted like and I must say, it's not a consistency that I like, and it's not sweet enough to add a little kick. I really like the store's "digital" read-out board that tells me the top 5 drinks. That helped me select my black tea, with bubbles, and no sugar. A small ran me just about $6 and is about 8 ounces. I did notice a little pick me up from the caffeine of the black tea, and it removed my hunger pangs before lunch....which I was surprised about. The staff is really nice and helpful. I don't think all the plastic, including the extra wide straw for sucking up the balls is really great for the environment either....but overall, it seems like a nice treat that is unique. I'm going to stop back to try some of the variations. They also offer a "stamp card" for a reward after 8 drinks. It's a brave new world. read more

FIFTYLAN is a very famous boba place in Taiwan and my brother-in-law, who grew up in Taiwan, loves this place! He did say that it's not exactly the same as the locations in Taiwan taste-wise, but it's as good as you're going to get if you're in America unless you want to fly to Taiwan for a cup of tea. All of their boba is golden - honey boba (they don't pop though). To me, they weren't as chewy or flavorful as normal boba I get from Gong Cha or other places. They're also a bit smaller than normal which is inconvenient if you want to drink fast.. I almost choked twice. If you're bringing your child here, know the risks and make sure they drink slow or maybe just don't order it with boba topping for safety reasons. The price is 3x more than Taiwan but again, can't compare because boba in Taiwan averages $2 for a medium or large. They offer 3 sizes which is more flexible than most places. Got the golden bubble milk tea in a size large, cost about $8. Not really sure if it's worth the price as I have tried to better bubble tea elsewhere, the Boba is simply a different color but the texture and flavor is exactly the same if not more bland than other locations. As far as the milk tea itself, it was quite hard to taste the milk tea and would have been nice if the TEA was a bit stronger. I also make sure to get less ice just so it would not be watered down but unfortunately it did not help the situation or the flavor. While I did like this milk tea, I would definitely say it is not worth it for the price and I would not be coming back here. ( there are definitely better options out there for much less $$$) In addition if you are looking for a flavor similar to something you may have experienced in Taiwan, you will not be finding it here unfortunately.
