My registration did end up showing up on time. I don't know what is up with these other, negative reviews though.

Honda San Carlos - Rodrigo and Tiago

I've been bringing my car to Honda San Carlos for six years, and this was easily the most…read moredismissive and poorly communicated service experience I've had here. A YEAR ago, Honda told me that at my next major service I would be due for my brakes. When I was called to schedule this appointment, the brake service was discussed and confirmed. I dropped my car off at 8:45 AM, expecting that to be part of the service. Instead, they performed a large maintenance package that included several things I had already recently taken care of, including an oil change and routine fluid/tire services, but somehow didn't perform the brake service I came in expecting. My final bill was $2,329.94, including $1,219.09 in labor alone. While they had my car, they called about an apparent cooling-system/radiator hose issue. When I asked my service advisor, Fernanda, what the total would be with the additional recommended work, I was told over $5,000. I declined and specifically asked them to stick to the original service I came in for. When I finally picked up my car around 5 PM, I learned they hadn't replaced my brakes at all--they had only inspected them to see whether they needed replacement. That's incredibly frustrating considering Honda San Carlos is the one that told me a year ago I would be due for them. Their own inspection now documents that my rear rotors are scored and will need replacement with the pads. Afterward, I sought a second opinion regarding the repairs and pricing and was told Honda's pricing was excessive and that I was essentially being price gouged. That only made me more concerned about being quoted over $5,000 after already spending more than $2,300. My vehicle was there from approximately 8:45 AM until 5 PM, yet Honda San Carlos has performed more work on this same car in less time in the past. With $1,219 in labor alone, I would like an explanation of exactly how those charges were calculated because the cost is extremely difficult to reconcile with what was actually completed. To top it off, when I opened my hood afterward, I found the technician's used nitrile gloves tucked inside the engine bay. In the past, Honda San Carlos has also typically provided a complimentary engine-bay cleanup and quick exterior wash. This time there was no engine cleanup, no exterior wash, and apparently not even a final check under the hood to make sure their gloves weren't left behind. The wash itself isn't why I'm leaving one star. It's another example of the decline in attention to detail. My biggest issue is the communication. Had I been clearly told beforehand that they were only going to inspect my brakes rather than replace them, I could have made an informed decision. Instead, I spent $2,329.94 and essentially an entire day without my car, yet left without the service I believed this appointment was specifically intended to address. I'm not interested in a generic response directing me to the dealership's main number. If Honda San Carlos genuinely wants to make this right, I want contact information for upper service management--someone with the authority to review my repair order, the labor charges, the pricing I was quoted, and how this appointment was handled. After six years, Honda San Carlos has lost a loyal customer. Judging by other recent reviews, unfortunately I don't seem to be the only longtime customer noticing a change.

Auto City - The leaf I picked up

The owner Sam came across genuine and helpful over the phone when I called to inquire about a 2013 red colored Leaf he was advertising at a good price. His personality and good nature over the phone helped motivate me to drive to Redwood City from Saratoga to see the car. When I got there the car was better than advertised so I was happy, but I noticed he had two more (newer) Leafs on the lot too, including a higher price newer 2015 Leaf in white (was my favorite color and options). He told me that one was not ready for sale yet and needed a couple of small fixes and not yet made fully ready to advertise, but I wanted it anyways and I ended up buying the one I wanted. The online advertised prices these days have to be very competitive to match the market out there and businesses usually post their bottom pricing online. His price advertised online was competitive with private party valuation that KBB gives. And as a dealership he provided the services of DMV registration and all that, so I now prefer to buy from him than from a private party. As I said the car was not fully done and ready yet - driver door remote didn't work and needed to be fixed still - but I needed the car so I took it with understanding that I will being it back two days later when he was originally expecting to get the part and have it taken care of. On my return visit two days later as promised everything went smoothly and the door lock actuator was replaced by his service provider, and my car even got a second wash before I pick it up. They do car detailing and ceramic coating at their location too, which I will likely bring my other (nicer) cars to get done in near future. Sam is a good man running a solid business and this small dealership is on my list of recommendations to my friends going forward. I wrote this rather long review to help a good business continue to do well.

Sam also worked closely with a non-profit I used to work at, and as a result helped change the lives of many individuals who otherwise wouldn't have been able to find an affordable, quality car. Anyone who has experience dealing with car dealerships and salesmen knows that a car salesperson with an altruistic side is hard to find. Final note, while the lot is on the smaller side, Sam has previously been open to keeping an eye out at auctions for specific types of cars if a serious potential client has requests. If you don't need a car right this second this is something to consider.
