I used to love First Wok. Their food is great. But their customer service is lacking tremendously. Normally when you pick up your carry out order there is no need to check that your order is correct. But today I got home to discover that my order was incomplete. (They left out part of it.) I called to complain and they said well drive back to get what they left out. I said that is impractical. I asked why don't you take something off my bill? They said no, drive back and we won't adjust your tab. I said that is not good customer service. I asked if they were familiar with Yelp. EXPENSIVE!! Staff is rude! The food is decent, but be prepared to pay top dollar. Do not expect Sunday dinner perks/ free egg roll or soup with your meal, although they will charge dinner price. I think it should be honored since the only option people have is take out! read more

First wok has been around longer than I have (33). If that doesn't ensure that they're doing something right then take this review for what it's worth. I frequent this location often and each and every time the staff is super attentive, friendly, and always on top of things as they zip around the place. The food is a bit too saucy for my liking so I usually ask for light sauce and it comes out perfect. Some people like it saucy and if that's you I would suggest to not change a thing. The general chicken is amazing and the egg rolls are by far the most flavorful and delicious you'll ever eat. The fried dumplings are are perfectly crisp and not greasy at all and they come with a dumpling sauce that is slightly acidic but sweet and goes perfectly with those little pork pockets. The drinks are made right there at the bar and the bartenders pour a little bit heavy but who's complaining? Haha. I usually get a beer or two but once In a while I'll spring for the margarita which is super tasty. Prices are a little steep but portions are more than generous and if you can make it in for lunch they have fried chicken!!!All in all I'd say first wok is a great place to come with the family or maybe for a drink with some coworkers and enjoy a drink a good meal and great company. read more

My girlfriend and I ordered 40$-50$ of food. Paid in cash. Two general Tsaos and crab Rangoon etc. HALFWAY through eating we discovered short CURLY GRAY HAIRS in the Tsaos!! I am disgusted and disgruntled beyond measure ! My girlfriend threw up whatever she was able to eat and I wanted to throw up but was so mad i couldn't even do that!!!! I called AND went back to First walk on 44th st se with my complaint and the man I talked too WOULDNT GIVE ME A REFUND. He made it sound as if it was MY fault there were grey hairs in the food, and said that they all had black hair. Ummmm I'm sorry but regardless of this I still found hairs. And I brought the hairs in to show them! I was a fan of this place beforehand and recommend you to many people. Now I tell everyone of my experience and avoid it at all costs. Delicious food! Ordered take out for lunch with my co-worker. - I'm a first timer to the restaurant, and love Chinese food. The person who answered the phone was extremely nice. Easy to understand and read back our fairly large take out order. Said it would be ready in 15 minutes. I took off from work right away, as the restaurant some distance away from the office, got there and the people were super friendly. I ordered the orange chicken with crab rangoons and was very impressed with the flavor and the fact that it was still hot. I'll be coming back there. read more

I ordered take out from First Wok for the first time. We ordered two meals and a side of Crab and Cheese, the total came out to $35. I was shocked at the price as the woman that took our order never gave us a total when we called. On top of that, the Shrimp and Broccoli I ordered only had a few shrimp and wasn't worth the price. The Crab and Cheese, while tasty, were way smaller than most places. Aside from the food, when I arrived the woman taking food orders was yelling at a customer on the phone and ultimately hung up on them. She was very nice to me but it doesn't excuse the poor service she gave to the other customers. All in all, I would only return if there were no other options. read more

Took my 10 year old grand daughter for dinner, it was our first time there. The food we ordered was good. Started off good but when I received the ticket to pay it indicated the price but in capital letters it stated NOW with two underlines....I really didnt know how to take it....offensive to me and my grand daughter. If its the ticket for the cook the cook knows to make the dinner for customers in that order. But to hand me a pay ticket with NOW is a bit demanding. I KNOW all those people didnt have NOW on their pay ticket and if so this restaurant needs to stop. Made me feel some kinda way being a black women and the only blacks in the establishment at that time with all those caucasian peoples. I may be wrong but thats how it came off to me. I know a Master Chef would not appreciate that receipt for it establishment rather its for co workers or customers. That's just not correct business practice. read more

Been eating at First Wok/Golden Wok (same family/same menu?) Too late for lunch menu today, so ordered egg drop soup and apps. Soup, as usual was delicious. Egg rolls, which I normally love, were overcooked, smaller and mostly wrapper, tasted like nothing. Fried dumplings, also overcooked, had thick, "thick crepe " batter. Both tasted slightly burnt (old oil?). Complained to waitress, she was very nice, but said she was only the server (couldn't voice complaints to the cook?). These restaurants were my favorite in the Grand Rapids area. Won't be going back to this one. read more

This is an ok place to eat- food is good. I had chicken chop suey, and it was good. However.... our server... was not pleasant. She was very rude, seemed we were a bother for her. Every time she came to our table to bring us something, she would literally drop it on the table- " okay here you go." She never asked if we needed anything- like a refill of hot tea. The table next to us laughed with us because they had her as well and did the same thing to them. She never stayed long enough for us to ask a question or even to say thank you! It was literally "drop and go"- we didn't want to ask for a box because we didn't want to deal with her attitude. Needless say, we most likely won't return. With a saddened heart and an empty wallet I am left disappointed. Me and my two beloved friends got take out from First Wok. We called and placed our order for 2 chicken fried rice, 1 vegetable fried rice, pork dumplings, and crab Rangoons. We were absolutely thrilled to find out that our order would be ready in just a short 15 minutes but soon realized that thrilled was the wrong word to use. The correct word to use would be sad. First of all, our order cost a total of $54 and they did not bother to put prices on their menu nor tell us the total of our order over the phone. Second of all the pork dumplings were TRASH. NO BUENO. DO NOT ORDER. They were a waste of money. The rice was decent and not bad. Big portions, but nothing special. Not worth the money. Lastly, I give this restaurant a 2/5 simply for their crab Rangoons. They were CHEFS KISS, YUM YUM, MMMMM. I recommend only getting the Rangoon if ordering from this place. read more

food was horrible, i couldn't even eat it. i called back and asked for a refund and was told to bring the food back the next day cause they were now closed. i brought the food back, and they told me they could only give me an exchange when i was told a refund. why would i want an exchange when the food was inedible? $47 absolutely wasted. it's no way to run a business. i also couldn't get any information on a higher up, was told to give him my name and number and i would get a call sometime past the weekend so now I have to take his word for it and hope someone calls me. i have never had to deal with something like this from a restaurant, ever. save your money and go get pho anh trang down the road, much better and better priced. read more

I've tried this place twice now, first time dined in the restaurant and ordered Hunan chicken lunch special. Started great - their egg drop soup was really good. The waitress also brought us crab cheese "on the house" which was really nice...they were ok, pretty basic. Egg roll was not the best I've had. The Hunan chicken had zero spice and the sauce was a little on the thin side. Service was good and it was a nice deal for lunch. The second time, we ordered takeout and I got the Mongolian lunch special - no soup was included, which was a bummer. The Mongolian beef was decent - better than the Hunan at least. Before first wok moved to their newer location they were always spot on. Ever since the move which had been over a year I think it is just not been the same. The owner talks very rudely to people as they come and and answering the phone. Within the last couple months there has always been an issue. My family only does takeout from the restaurant. It started off small with them forgetting some of the sauces to eat with the the dumplings and egg rolls. Then they forgot the egg patties for the egg foo young. When we call to complain it is we'll give you credit. Each time they want me to come back and get it right then. I have already set my table and opened everything up and we're to begin eating. Going back is wasteful and not worth my time. When I finally was going to collect the owner demanded to know why it hadn't been rung up on my bill and was really disgusted. She had to ask another employee. I stated they messed my order up. He last screw up was a couple days ago. We order a soup as the family is ill and a fried rice. When I picked it up I know by the total that the rice did not get made or was included. At least I didn't pay for it. My mum called to complain and she barked at her and said she didn't order it. She did I was right there when she called it in. Pretty said the way we are being treated and the continual mistakes. Like it's our fault they can't get their act together. read more

As a frequent customer, my family and I have enjoyed their food. The prices are steep. This is not the reason for my low rating however. The Kung Po Shrimp (or improper food handling in their kitchen) gave my son food poisoning. He ate half of a dinner serving and was sick 3 hours later. I called to let them know, and I requested a refund for his dinner. The gentleman on the phone did not care. He said they don't have problems there and they don't ever offer refunds. I offered to bring the food back, and he still refused. I will never go there again, and I will be reporting this to the BBB and to the health department. read more

Even before they moved their dishes were just okay. I generally order the chicken/beef vegetable supreme extra spicy, but it never comes that way. They merely toss a chili pepper in the mix to make you think it's spicy. But it's as bland as today. And 2x now they've shorted me the eggroll (which doesn't make to call them, since they don't deliver, nor bother the $2 refund. And it's the principal of staging the order correctly) At least at the Hunan my order is spicy to order. They've somehow gotten lazy over time, and their booths are too small and cramped to fit 4-5 people comfortably. read more

Terrible service and manager is worse. I suggest check your food before leaving to make sure it's right. Add up the total yourself because their hosts can't do math. And have them repeat your order back before hanging up, might save you from having to wait for them to correct your food. I've had 3 takeout orders now that were messed up. This has been our Go-To Chinese restaurant for many years. It has steadily been going down hill- particularly since the change in location. Handicap parking is inconvenient and forces you to actually wheel yourself around parked cars to go up the sidewalk. I am on a knee cart and it was very difficult. The prices have risen dramatically. We asked for a booth and were seated right next to the kitchen with a great view of the bar and a laundry basket filled with dirty linens. Very slow service, and a server who didn't know what a screwdriver was despite the fact that it is listed in their menu. I'm not 100% sure she understood English. Then she forgot to tell the bartender until we reminded her. I could see him NOT making my drink for almost 10 minutes as he worked on his books. Was good when it finally arrived. Food was just OK. Asked for boxes and our check and our waitress apparently had approximately 5 tables and and decided to do all the checks at the same time. From our vantage point directly next to the kitchen we could watch her box up everyone else's orders before she moseyed her way over to us. We waited so long that I left to sit in the tiny lobby while my husband hunted her down at the bar. Basically we wasted 20 minutes waiting for our boxes and check. Probably won't be back for a while. I've been dining here on occasion for the past three years and have no complaints. The food is always hot and delicious; my favorite is the Hunan Shrimp. This is a shrimp, carrot, broccoli, and scallion dish with a dark sauce served with rice (white or fried.) I am typically a lunch diner, and their lunch offerings include an egg roll/crab cheese and a bowl of hot and sour or egg drop soup. I've never ordered the egg drop soup, but I can say that the hot and sour is easily the best I've had in the GR area. (I recently took my mom here and she said the egg drop soup was thick and has great flavor.) The egg rolls/crab cheese have always been hot and crispy; not outstanding, but never bad. Their new location is absolutely beautiful inside; it easily makes the outside world disappear for a while, and is a refreshing change from the standard asian restaurant décor. The portions are generous and reasonably priced, and I usually end up taking my leftovers home. There is a bar, though I have never requested a drinks menu. Service is always polite and prompt. The only thing I'd change are their placemats; currently they use paper zodiac ones. Something less buffet-ish would be a better all around look. read more
