Fish Only is one of the best options you can pick for your daily lunch hour. But first thing first--Fish Only is Cash Only. Got it? ;) Anyhow, the reason why I find Fish Only as an always welcoming and attractive choice is consistency. They don't have a super big menu range, but what they do offer, most selections are decent. I cannot really recall a time when I found their food unacceptable, sans maybe 1 rare occasion--and that was me being picky. My belly is usually quite satisfied after a trip to Fish Only. Chances are, most people would ADORE their food. ...As you can already tell from my 5-stars rating. I'd list out some food items I've tried (or "mini dish reviews") at the end of this entry. If you'd like to skip to there now, feel free! Otherwise, I'd like to address that their prices are fair, but not considered cheap, since their portions tend to lean on the smaller side. For me, it barely fills me up, but I'd get hungry again rather soon, in contrast to what I've felt had I dined elsewhere. I'd advise you to call in your order ahead of time, so they can prepare you meal prior, and then you can simply drop by and get your food to go. First, you save time. (Otherwise, food prep time is anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes.) Second, while the dining area is fine, nothing wrong with it, it could get slightly crowded with many hospital employees from nearby facilities. I prefer to dine somewhere more quiet and secluded. But that's just me. Workers are mostly Asians, and depending on whom you get, some may appear aloof and quiet, and some may be more friendly. (They don't tend to smile.) That's just kind of part of their culture and upbringing; I assure you guys, they aren't actually cold/rude. (At least, I hope.) Finally, a general comment before specific dishes blurbs: The seasoned rice and coleslaw that are served with most choices are decent. The coleslaw is ok, most def edible, unlike some other places'. The rice is basically soy sauce flavored, but I kinda really like it! Splash some hot sauce on, mix it up, and it's even better. = = = Selected food choices summaries: = = = Red Snapper Filet: you get 2 whole filets! ...Whereas for other fish choices, you get 1? Anyway, this one tends to be drier and tougher. It's only ok. I mean, perhaps the fish specie itself tends to be boring, but dipping it in tartar sauce fixes it right up. Still, not my top pick. Salmon Filet: this is the safest choice from the charbroiler, also something I could whip up successfully at home. But due to the ease of cooking salmon, this one usually turns out more flavorful and savory than most. Recommended, for you, and for myself as a go-to. Rainbow Trout: boned, whole trout from Idaho, apparently, per menu. I don't like this one. Boned, ugh, inconvenience! The only item that I really cannot recommend. Sorry, rainbow trout. Seafood Combo: fried food galore. This is for the days when you feel like eating dirty, and forget about counting calories and cholesterol intake. It's hard not to like this one. It's fried food! Yum. Fried Clams: you get tons of clams from this option. Everything is butterfly-style, and you won't find any shell. (That should be a given, but my friends asked about that before, and you may be too?) I prefer seafood combo; clams just don't taste as good to me... Personal preference, perhaps. Still a fun try. Chicken Sandwich: surprisingly, this was an unexpected hit, especially for only 5 bucks. The fried chicken strip was not too dry, nicely complemented by the moist coleslaw. The french roll wasn't too hard, just crunchy and crispy enough. I further flavored it with some hot sauce--then it was reasonably amazing, within the confines of $5. I'd pick this again. Shrimp With Hot Garlic Sauce: mostly sauce, not many shrimps. Flavor is there, but sadly, shrimps, barely. (Tastes great though!) One & done; not a repeat purchase for me. read more

Stopped by b/c I was hungry and it's lent season. Upon arrival, I was greeted and the ambiance was welcoming and inviting. I ordered the Soul Food Fish Special by which I was pleasantly surprised. The catfish was crispy and tasteful. But, I must say, the collard greens are the reason why I will be returning (SOOOOO GOOD & GARLICKY). I've been getting take-out from this restaurant since 2006. The quality of the food and my general dining experience with this place has remained remarkably consistent and favorable over the years, although it was an egregiously dark day when they took scallops off the menu. :-( What has kept me coming back countless times (other than the close proximity to my workplace) is that Fish Only offers filling portions of decent tasting food at very affordable prices. It also helps that they cook up the food reasonably fast. I should point out that it's while it's definitely *not* the best seafood I've ever had (not by any stretch of the imagination), it's still pretty good, yet amongst the least expensive I've had as well. Thus, the overall value factor (price vs. quantity & quality) for this restaurant is very favorable. Even if you're broke, you can afford to eat here. In fact, despite steadily rising food prices over the past decade, I don't recall having noticed any price increases on their menu until 2013 - and even at today's prices, it's still (in my opinion) a bargain for what you're getting. My favorite dish has *historically* been the Seafood Combo - you get 8 pieces of shrimp, 4 pieces of red snapper, fried rice, and coleslaw. The fish and shrimp are decent - I've never received anything "fishy" smelling from this restaurant. The shrimp are on the small side (but what do you expect for the low price tag, right?). The fried rice is surprisingly good as well. The coleslaw leaves a bit to be desired (it's somewhat on the soggy side), but it's still edible. My recent *new* favorite has been the Shrimp with Hot Garlic Sauce (with fried rice) - it's slightly less expensive than the seafood combo, tastes about as good or better, and is also somewhat more nutritious, given the conspicuously greater vegetable content within. The Shrimp Fried Rice is not bad, but it's a pretty plain meal compared to the aforementioned dishes. It's worth a try, but I don't think I would order it a second time. I strongly advise against ordering the #7 fried clams - while they're not horrible, they appear to be comprimsed of more breading than actual clam, and as hard as I struggled, I was unable to discern any taste of actual clam in the meal. This is probably my least favorite of Fish Only's menu items. For the same amount of money ($5.50), you are better off just getting the #4 fish plus. Although there is no restroom available for customers at this restaurant, I will not hold it against the owners for two reasons: 1) There is very little room within the restaurant as it is, and 2) given the location of the restaurant, a public restroom within would probably be rendered into a hopelessly uninhabitable state in short order (infer from that vague speculation what you will). Parking can sometimes be difficult to obtain in the lot - you can usually get a spot on the street in such instances. I can't really comment on service since I always only get take-out from the place, but the folks working there have always been polite enough, and they've always complied with my demands ... err, requests for extra tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. In short, while I wouldn't recommend this place if you're looking for a first rate seafood dinner, it's definitely worth eating at if you're in the area, and want to fill up on some tasty food without bankrupting yourself. I for one plan to continue eating here on a regular basis for the foreseeable future. P.S. I've never gotten sick eating here all these years, so I think that should count for something as well. :) read more

This is a very small (14 seating) restaurant immediately across from the LA County Hospital. It's cheap and it's fast. I love fish, and this place was close to where I was going today. I decided to stop by based on the Yelp reviews. I ordered the Seafood Combo plate for only $6.45. It was good, but it wasn't as good as I had expected. I should have ordered the Rainbow Trout because I generally don't like fried food. I only ordered the Seafood Combo plate after asking the cashier what the most popular dish was. The serving size was extremely generous. It came with fried rice and coleslaw. I didn't like the coleslaw at all. It was a big soggy and had too much vinegar. My bud and I both had the fish sandwich, and the two of them with a coke came out to less than $10. That constitutes a bargain in my book any day. The sandwich was a pair of breaded and fried snapper filets on as good french roll, with tarter sauce and coleslaw. They have Tapatilla and a southern style hot sauce with a vinegar hit. I honestly don't understand why so many people have written good reviews for this place. I liked this place initially. I love fried seafood so when I was driving by I literally sharply pulled over to try it out. It's a good size for groups of people to come and eat together. The staff is pleasant enough and straightforward, the portions are solid and I like a place that has and gives you cocktail and tartar sauce. But when it comes down to what really matters, the food I could barely finish my plate. To me it tasted like my seafood came out of a box. My wait time was very quick but I'm pretty sure that just means they had it out and it wasn't fresh. There was no seasoning or flavor to the seafood. If I had a "Best Bang for your Buck" category, I'll probably file Fish Only under that. I ordered the Red Snapper Filet for lunch and it definitely hits the spot. At $7.35 with tax, it came with two pieces of Red Snapper charbroiled with grill marks on both sides rested under a bed of seasoned rice and cole slaw on the side. The red snapper fillets can be a bit more moist, but it was alright the way it was. I enjoyed it with the tartar sauce that they provided. The seasoned rice was exactly as it sounds - garnished with some chopped green onions. It definitely is more tasty than just eating plain steamed rice, but it probably also contained a good amount of MSG along with it. I enjoyed the cole slaw as it helped to balance everything out since the fish and rice together would have been just a bit too heavy for me. It does take a while for them to prepare the food, so I'll recommend ordering ahead by phone to speed up the process if you're pressed on time. Fish Only - I shall visit you again soon!
