This is, I feel, the best location of the best burger chain on the East Coast. The reason I say East Coast is because I don't want peope who like In-N-Out Burger to yell at me. I'll pass judgment on that establishment when I actually experience west of the Mississippi. Five Guys burgers are exactly what they should be: fresh yet greasy, with no frills. There are a lot of topping choice, all free, but I prefer simplicity. You can't go wrong with the fried onions, though. Keep in mind, the regular burger has two patties and the "little" has one. They post where they get the potatoes for the french fries on a white board (usually somehwere in Idaho), and they are made boardwalk-style with the skins on, which I like. While the fries can be inconsistent (sometimes, they can be a bit soggy), the portions are more than generous (you need only one medium order for upwards of 3 people) and they have malt vinegar, which is a huge plus. When Five Guys was still a fledgling little establishment in Northern Virginia, my father was one of their first regular customers. I tell my West coast buddies that Five Guys is the In-n-Out of the East coast, and as long as we're mindful of exactly all the little qualifications that should be assumed into such a comparison, I stand by the statement. Do they serve monstrously huge burgers like In-n-Out? Well, not so monstrously huge as the fatuously unnecessary but oh-so-deliciously-so 6x6 or any higher factored In-n-Out custom burgers, but for a "regular" burger, you get a good hunk of burger with two beef patties. Do they hand peel their own potatoes and fry em up by hand like In-n-Out? Well, yes, although for my tastes I would have appreciated somewhat skinnier fries. But I attribute that to a general "east coasters like fatter fries" sense I get, as a transplanted Californian. What Five Guys lacks in quality (in my admittedly biased view) of french fries they certainly make up for in quantity. Remember bag fries, back when you ate out at places like McDonald's? Those overlooked, uneaten fries that escape your attention when you initially began eating your take-out? And then, with the fries all gone, you'd peek into the bag and lo and behold, the glorious sight of a few more crispy golden treasures. Five Guys takes this idea and just runs, runs flat out with it and unbelievably fills your bag with fries. The server will first fill your styrofoam cup with fries, then put it in your bag... but then will, with absolutely no outward indication of how wondrous and beautiful a gift this is, take the fries scooper and ladle up a generous extra helping and pour it right into your bag. The first time I saw this happening I was sure the counter girl was hitting on me. No such luck, but I did get a hug bagful of fries. Can you customize the hell out of your burger like In-n-Out? Well, not quite so creatively, but there is a dazzling array of condiments and sides to stick on your burger, although I will admit I'm more of a burger purist so am not so impressed by that. These qualifications aside, in my 5 years as a Californian on the East coast, 3000 miles away from the nearest In-n-Out, I will say that Five Guys is a worthy and tasty alternative. read more

I didn't know anything about Five Guys until I visited DC and a friend told me that "it's the east coast's In-N-Out." Disclaimer: I am a native Californian. An Angeleno, in fact, so I have been raised on the undeniably best burgers in the world. So when I hear a place being compared to the venerable In-n-Out Burger, I felt obliged and challenged to check it out. So I walk in. First impressions: This location is small, definitely a downtown/city location. The menu sprawls above, with quite a selection to choose from. Definitely not the simple 4-item menu at In-N-Out. There are a lot of toppings to choose to put on your burger, and seemingly no limit to how many you can put. So I went for a burger with the works, minus pickles and some of the sauces. A side of fries and a small soda to round out the meal. My food arrived, and I open the burger to reveal what's inside: Two patties (apparently a "burger" means a "double hamburger" - you have to order a "little burger" to get a regular burger... confused yet?), all the toppings as I ordered, so far so good. And the first bite: Definitely not In-N-Out level. The bread was cold, slightly soggy, and stale (not toasted). The meat patties tasted processed and of a lower quality, closer to Wendy's than In-N-Out. I could tell instantly that Five Guys does NOT use fresh, never-frozen beef. The toppings were okay, dropping all over the place, though that was my fault for ordering so many. The fries were a very generous portion, spilling out of the container and filling up the paper bag. However, they were way too salty. Points to In-n-Out for letting me choose the salt level of my fries. Finally, there are peanuts just laying around for you to pick up, open, snack on, and throw the shells on the floor wherever. Very cool, but it seemed like something I'd do more at a country BBQ instead of a sanitized, mid-city burger place. Do NOT go to Five Guys expecting In-N-Out. The little burger is not little, its big. The regular is insane. A tad bland, but its a juicy perfect medium with super fresh veggies. The bun is too soft and does not hold together well with all the juices. Its cheap and the menu is simple for the simple-minded like me. When coming from the land of In-and-Out, you have to get used to the ways in which 5 Guys exceeds and fails to meet expectations. You just aren't going to be able to get onion rings, mushrooms, and the 12 other toppings avaiable at 5 Guys on your In-and-Out burger. But you also won't get the heartburn involved in two 1/4lb patties (too big! get the children's sized single patty version for $3.50ish) or the greasy bun (mmm, In-and-Out spongey bread...). But as a stand-alone burger joint, I can definetely see the appeal of 5 Guys. It's very walk-up, Fosters Freeze-y, but conveniently located in a metropolitain area. Every now and then I want a burger - and when I want a burger I really want it & they hit just the right spot. The fries are perfect-o except they only come in two sizes gi-normous - and not quite as gi-normous. What ever you do - don't order the grilled cheese or the grilled veggie and cheese. Perhaps the most disgusting thing I have ever been served - they basically put a hamburger bun in the dripping with said filling and fry it - just awful not to mention weird! I don't go to Five Guys often (food's too rich) but when I do I'm always satisfied. That's all you should ever want in a burger; BEEF SATISFACTION. I like the Five Guys model also: come in, order a burger totally the way you want it, step back while it's prepared fresh, and eat peanuts! Excellent customer service. Employees were very polite and approachable. Employees smiled and acknowledged every customer that walked in. Cashier and servers were very friendly, fast and efficient. Employees were accommodating to customers' needs. There's peanuts for customers while you wait for your order. Burgers and fries servings come in gluttonous portions. For example, their regular burger is really a double and French fries are enough to feed 2 or maybe 3 people. Customers are at liberty to request for smaller portions of fries. Checked online to find out when they closed - 10pm. Walked a ways to get here with my family and arrived at 8pm. Doors were locked and people were eating inside. One of the workers was cleaning the grill and looked in a hurry to leave. The sign on their door says they close at 10pm 7 days a week. Somehow this particular location on H St. seems to be the least favorite of this local chain, but alas, us out-of-towners don't have the luxury to be that picky. Like we're gonna go the airport 5 Guys because the one half a block away from our hotel is supposed to be not quite as good? Rigggghhht. We stopped at 5 Guys for lunch, having vaguely recalled seeing something about it on Food Network. Jody and I are not the hugest fans of fast food, but we are huge fans of a delicious juicy burger, and we love to support local business. It's true, we have no basis for comparison with the other 5 Guys locations AND I've never been to an In-n-Out Burger, but we were pretty happy with our food. My "little" cheeseburger was super-yummy, and perfectly sized for a pre-conference lunch. The famous fries, which are cooked in peanut oil, were very crisp and potatoey. We chose not to snack on the large open box of peanuts with all this swine-flu business, but other customers had no qualms about reachin in there and snacking to their heart's content. We LOVED the hand-written sign stating where today's potatoes came from (some no-name town in Idaho, of course). My conclusion? You should not visit D.C. without trying a 5 Guys burger-- yes, even if you have to go to the H St. location. Totally worth it. read more

Love the fries, but I'm still an In-an-Out devotee as far as burgers go. I didn't like the bun which was softer, a little sweet, cold, and got soggy easily. Like a fool, I tossed the receipt for my order, which happened to be purchased on a corporate credit card, after I spilled some delicious Cherry Coke all over it. Needing the receipt for my expense report, I called the store to speak with a manager about getting a duplicate. I spoke with Jeremy, a very nice guy who took all my information so that he could look through the credit card receipts from the day I was in. I'm not yet sure if he was able to find it (my fingers are crossed!!!), but I really appreciate his willingness to look for a measly $11 and change receipt. I went here while at a convention. I went in cause I needed a quick meal but I really wasn't in the mood for a burger. I asked the cashier what I should get and he said the grilled cheese. That sounded good so I got it. It was really good. They took a hamburger bun but put the parts that normally would touch the patty they were the parts on the grill and the cheese was in the middle. It was really good. I also got some fries. I walked a ways before I ate any of them so I am sure if they were just ok because I didn't eat them immediately or because they are just normal fries. While I was waiting for my food I noticed they also had cajan fries, I think I would have liked those more but I guess I will just have to wait till the next time I'm in DC. YUMMY!! I am originally from So Cal and used to visit DC for work frequently and have actually recently moved to the area. People will not agree with me and will probably hate me when I say this but IN-N-OUT is really not THAT great. Don't get me wrong it is a good burger, but ordering one as is -- is just too cheesy and small. However,those grilled onions get me everytime...but In-n-Out has NOTHING on Five Guys. I LVOE Five guys. It is fresh, a nice size, and not expensive. The only downer is (if I remember correctly) they are cash only, but they do have an ATM inside.YUMMY!!! Comparing this to In-N-OUT is ridiculous especially if you are a California resident. Just by eating this burger at Five Guys, I already miss California. The burgers were too big especially for a cheeseburger and the price was kind of pricey, I didn't know that a little cheeseburger will fill you up already. The meat proportion to the bread and cheese was overwhelming and the amount of fries given was ridiculous. Regular fries would feed 4 people i think with the servings they give you. That's the only good thing about Five guys are the fries and free peanuts. Burger quality is definitely fresh but I don't like my burger to drip with that oil or juice. This is THE place to break your diet and have a burger and fries. Buns were fresh, as were the vegetables on our burgers. Large size fries were too large, but tasty and crispy!
