Wow, this place was fantastic when I was in college in the 90's. My friend went there a few weeks ago and raved how horrible it is now and I didn't believe him because its always been awesome. Went there today and it was TERRIBLE. We had the Generals Chicken and the mandarin chicken. Worst Generals I've ever had....and it used to be fantastic. Mandarin was better than the Generals but it still wasn't very good. Both were so bad we each ate half and left it for them to throw away. Hot and sour soup was not very good either. Wife said the egg drop was decent.. Rice was bad too. Eggrolls were not good either. Kid had lo mein and thought it was ok. He brought his home. Damn shame. Hands down the best Chinese food in New Orleans (and the Northshore for that matter). I usually stop by at the Five Happiness after shopping at Costco since its right across the street. On Tuesday, we tried couple of dinner platters for $14.99 per person which comes with egg roll, soup (wanton and hot and sour), shrimp fried rice and choice of one of the entrees, beef with broccoli in hot garlic sauce and General's chicken. We've tried their lunch menu and house specialties and everything is good here so do give it a try. Service is always courteous, prompt and professional. read more

In town to help my daughter move into her new apartment. We decided to order take out to watch Pittsburgh Penguin game 3 playoff. I had the Combination Fried Rice and Egg Rolls and she had Sweet & Sour Chicken. All was good. The Egg Rolls were the best. Nice and crispy full of shrimp and veges. S & S Chicken were tender and very nice sized pieces. Fried Rice contained beef, pork, chicken and shrimp, lots and lots of shrimp. Beef was a little dry. Overall the Fried rice needs some additional flavor. My suggestion add I white onion. There was so much of the Fried Rice, I had enough for dinner then the next day I had 2 more serving on my drive home to Ft Worth, TX. read more

One of the best in the N.O. area for Chinese. It's somewhat hit-and-miss, so you really need to know what to order. I recommend the hot and sour soup, crab rangoons, potstickers, shrimp with pecans, and crispy pepper beef. The only negative is that I wish they'd devein their shrimp. Horrible. We have been ordering here for over 20 years with excellent food. HOWEVER, under new ownership and entire meal was horrible tonight. They even stopped giving rice with the lo mein . Don't order from here. The pop stickers were horrible. I spit them out. Too much salt in everything. They are cutting corners on all food I ordered tonight. Always check your orders before you leave. My girlfriend an I stopped by to place an order to go and she ordered pork with Broccoli in garlic sauce for me. I went to Five Happiness today for lunch. It is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants, but that it not why I'm writing this... In Orleans parish, there is currently a requirement that restaurant patrons be vaccinated or show negative covid test. This is supposed to be enforced. I was disappointed that there was absolutely no attempt to enforce this. Apart from a sign on the door, I was not asked whether I had been vaccinated nor required to show proof of vaccination. It made me feel uneasy eating my lunch. Other restaurants I have been to since this requirement came into effect have asked for proof of vaccination upon entry. read more

I've been going here for YEARS. They use to be good but not anymore. If you go to get takeout at night they will give you way less food and it'll probably be cold. I went there a couple days ago and got take out and the food was ice cold and it was a way smaller portion than normal. When I returned it I told them they could have at least gave me a free drink or something seeing as I could have went all the way home with some ice cold food and they acted like I said something crazy. Literally the most horrible thing I've ever gotten from a Chinese restaurant. It's the blandest chicken and onion mixture I've ever had. Plus, never in my wildest dreams would I imagine that I ordered bland chicken with green onions and white onions. Is there good Chinese in New Orleans? This place is expensive and bland. I've been here twice. The most recent was yesterday. Staff was friendly and helpful in making choice. I got the wonton soup and the sweet and sour chicken special. The sweet and sour chicken breading was mushy and falling off. There was barely any sauce on the chicken. It looked like they put in the chicken, random steamed vegetables (onions still had a significant bite) and threw a little bit of sauce on it. Chicken wasn't flavorful at all. I actually had a pretty negative image about this place from past visits for dinner. Came here for business dinner with my work people and they usually served us at one of those private room at the back. Service was always good but the food was so freaking salty with soy sauce galore. BUT I went for lunch today thanks to my friend's suggestion and I must say I have changed my view. Lunch here is quite an amazing deal! I had Chicken with garlic sauce. Tons of veggies and great portion for price. On top of that, it comes with soup too! The service was great again. Left overs nicely packed and given to us when we were heading out. Order came out as we asked and it was not so salty this time so I do see myself coming back for lunch again. Never had an issue for parking spot. Ambiance wise, it is one of the nicest chinese food place in New Orleans up to my knowledge. Very clean. They have a full bar as well. The absolute worst Chinese food I have ever eaten...yuck! The eggroll was soggy no flavor. OMG the Egg Foo Young tasted like flour was added to stretch the batter and too much 5 spice. The beef and garlic sauce was supposed to spicy and hot but it did have flavor. Five Happiness is a popular lunch spot for my work crew and we come here often. They have a great list of lunch specials that are modestly priced (7.95-10.95)and substantial. It's usually two meals for me. The special comes with your choice of soup, entree, rice and a fried wonton. They are good at accommodating a group as we often go with 10-14 and have no problem getting a table. It's Americanized Chinese food, but...let's be honest, most of us love that stuff. Another place that aspires to be better than it is, Five Happiness is on the surface is nice, but I'd hardly call it "great." Product: Chinese food and full bar. They have a number of sweet in house specialty cocktails, which really isn't my thing. The "poopoo platter" sampler is a decent amount of food for 2-3 people to snack on with drink. I've been here other times ordering full entrees, and I'd call them "okay." (3 stars) Service: Full-service restaurant, with host and server. Nothing exceptional to note here. But hey who am I to judge, this place is always full and people seem to enjoy it, i dont think they know any better, however I have been called a stuck up food snob on many occasions so take my words with a grain of salt. First time here in over 30 years. The place is beautiful. Service was great. Most importantly they had beef chow fen. I have been craving this since I moved back here over a year ago a no other places have had this dish. Bravo! There is a good selection of real Chinese food and not just "american" chinese or the vietnamese style here in the area. I strongly recommend this place. I haven't eaten at this establishment in several years. However, I decided to give it a try since it's close to my job. My husband and I went for lunch and the service was fast and friendly. We had two of the lunch specials that came with soup, egg roll and fried rice. The food was pretty good. It satisfied my craving for Chinese food and I was able to get in and eat some good food and be back to work in no time. I will be back to try other lunch specials. I wanted so badly to like this place, but it fell flat and disappointed in so many ways. We came here on a Sunday night, looking for good Chinese food. It's been tough to find good Chinese around the city. We didn't want anything fancy. Just good food. I ordered the combination lo mien with "no shrimp". I told the server I was allergic to shrimp. He then said ok beef and chicken? I said yes. I also ordered the lemon chicken and a couple of egg rolls. The server brings out the egg rolls first. I took a bite and there were 2 big shrimps staring right at me. I immediately spit it out because shrimp makes my throat swell up. So I called the server back and showed him the shrimp. He said "sorry I didn't know you were allergic to shrimp. We have a veggie egg roll." I clearly told him I was allergic to shrimp. I then asked for 1 of them, hoping to just get him to replace 1 of our egg rolls, since he neglected to warn me of the shrimp . (When I got the bill he had charged me for both orders. Bad customer service. He should have swapped it for free). The other dishes came to the table. I thought the lemon chicken was pretty decent. The lo mien lacked flavor, and didn't have any beef in it. I'm pretty sure we were still charged for the combo price. We didn't order any drinks, and our bill was almost $40. This place is priced like PF Changs, but does not even come close to the dining experience you get at PF Changs. And that's a chain restaurant. Chinese food is typically a cuisine that you can get really good food for cheap. Unfortunately this food wasn't that good and wasn't all that cheap. I've only given out a few ratings under 3* in my 150+ reviews I've done on Yelp. I started to give this place a 3*, but then remembered how subpar of an experience it was. It's a bummer. The food tastes like oil and plastic. Horrible Restaurant... Its suppose to be the best in New Orleans.. but the worse compare to anywhere else. We had 4 different dishes.. and they all tasted the same and looked the same. The mushroom I had in one of the dishes.. seriously tasted like plastic! I was scared after I ate it! My husband and I like to play a game when we fly home into MSY. It's called "order 5 Happiness delivery and see if we can beat them home". Typically we do. The food is varied and very tasty.
