Last night, my friend and I came here for dinner after walking around Bryant Park - Winter Village. At 6 pm on Saturday, we were extremely lucky that the wait was short. We just came here from a nearby hot pot restaurant, we were told it was a 2 hours wait. My friend is Hispanic hence she kept saying the meal reminded her of Mexican foods. I guess her dish was very spicy. She ordered a spicy chicken soup. I had kimchi fried rice. I enjoyed the scallion pancake the most. For the non aficionado's this may be a good choice but those that know, should know better. Bulgogi, aight, nothing more to write about. The galbi soup was good but I've never had a bad one before. Both were alright but the seafood kimchi fried rice had a lot of chewy hard to digest parts and the bulgogi soup could use more seasoning. However, overall still quite decent. Venue (4/5): There is a good amount of seating and it's reasonably well decorated. The bathrooms were clean and the layout was efficient. Service (4/5): They didn't check up that frequently but the waiters were helpful. Came in during lunch time on a weekday, it was not as busy as the tofu house next door. It's very difficult to get a place to seat down in ktown during lunch time. Service was pretty good. Appetizers were just normal. We ordered lunch's special tofu soup, however they are slightly too salty for me, I had to eat with rice( i ordered tofu with beef) My friend ordered seafood tofu soup was not too salty for her. I love the food here! All the dishes we ordered were delicious! I definitely recommend any of the star items (chef recommended) ones because each one of them was excellent. The food is definitely pricey, but for the taste it is worth it. The service was prompt. Since we came on a Saturday at 5pm there was no line yet and so we were seated quickly. When we asked for extra utensils for the group they made sure to give us extras. The restaurant itself is quite nice. It's a mix of modern with warm brown wood. Also weird side-note: The sound doesn't travel quite well inside (everything gets muffled somehow) so it was a bit difficult to hear others across the table. Ehhh, just didn't live up to the hype. Food overall just wasn't that impressive. Got the popular items too - the Kimchi Fried Rice w/ beef - was so excited to try this - hardly had any beef in it, and lacked flavor (believe it or not), and it just didn't taste that good to me. I was expecting a lot more robustness and great flavors but it was a huge downer. We had a couple of bites and we packaged it up and gave our leftovers away to some homeless dude sitting on a rug. Hope he liked it. The beef dish looked great too, but the beef was somewhat dry / overcooked and that was a big damper. It's like they covered up the overcooked meat with a broth and some veggies / condiments. I mean it was okay but nothing exciting or out of this world, and it most certainly could have been better. The Chicken Wings - we got the sweet and spicy - it was solid. I think you would like these and I would recommend. Thick crispy coating, I like the rosemary touch, and they were solid - so these saved the day. Nothing fascinating but they were good enough. Kinda weird but they don't offer any gift certificates or gift cards. A lot of young patrons here. One of the waitresses - she's really big into upselling and lacks the business acumen and / or decorum of when the customer signs the cc bill and is still at the table you don't usually need to pick it up right away - you could wait until they leave - but she's all about the $$ and I thought it was rude how she barged in and grabbed the bill. And she wasn't even our waitress. So overall very disappointing, and all these high-powered-positive-so-awesome-best-food-ever-reviews just baffled us. Did not live up to expectations. Another Korean gal we spoke to next to us said she never gets fried rice at places like this, but she liked her Bone Broth dish. Service was inconsistent here. The guy who sat us was not too nice or patient, just all business. Our waitress was patient and nice but 2/3 of her recommendations didn't pan out. Personally would not recommend corn cheese fried rice, chicken skewers were quite small and there wasn't any unique flavor profile in the rice. Haven't been to this place and was in the mood for bibim naengmyeon (cold spicy noodles). Pretty crowded when we got there, but there wasn't much of a wait. Ordered and food came out pretty quickly. This place hit the spot on a very very cold evening. We came for an early dinner so it wasn't too busy yet. It's a pretty casual vibe that is a great place to catch up with friends! Here are the dishes we tried: - Hae Mool Pa Jun (seafood scallion pancake): There was a lot of seafood and the portion is huge! It's a little on the oily side, but the side sauce it comes with (not sure what it is, kind of vinegar-y?) cuts the oiliness. - Jap Chae (glass noodles) with beef: I've had jap chae that is way too oily but these were cooked really well. Really flavorful but not too strong. - Budae Jjigae (army stew): This was the perfect dish for a cold evening. There is lots of sausage, spam, and pork belly. It was a bit heavy (maybe because of all the fatty meats) but definitely hit the spot. - Bi bim bap with beef: Large portion with lots of meat and veggies! This is my friend's go-to dish here. Right after my Spain/Portugal trip and on the way back home, I had to visit this place to satisfy my craving. I was tired of bread, ham, and prosciutto, and this place never disappoints. Of course, the prices are higher than before, but I appreciate the generous portions of food. I was here six months ago and had the best experience. I don't know what happened over the last few months but I can tell you things have changed. We walked in we're seated. immediately someone brought menus and water to the table. Menus were dirty and as we were skimming through we noticed the prices had gotten very very expensive. Now I understand inflation, I understand that restaurants need to make up for the lost time during Covid, but what I saw here was way out of line. At least for me. the average dish was 37.95, which for lunch seems extremely pricey in my mind. We were looking for a place to eat in Ktown and after checking a bunch of places that only allowed to do BBQ, we found Five Senses. We sat at a community table but it was divided with some decorations to make it feel a bit more private. This is a brilliant idea to change the size of parties while keeping the same furniture arrangements. I had a Korean beer to start along with the traditional little dishes of food which I cannot name but were excellent. Five senses is a yummy place in Ktown. I've had about 3 times already! This time I came alone after work bc I was craving Korean food. It was very nice for them to not care that I was solo and they sat me as soon as a table was ready. I ordered octopus over rice and chicken wings. The octopus came first..which I wish came after the wings since I ordered it as an entree. It was sizzling on a plate and had a bunch of lettuce on top which confused me. Not sure about hot lettuce . It felt like it was hiding something BUT when I tried the octopus it was soo good and tender. The sauce is great too! Not too sweet or too spicy. I would definitely order again and just ask for no lettuce. When the wings showed up, they were steaming hot. Too sweet for my taste but the crunch was awesome. I had about half of each plate and took the rest home. The wings tasted so good once reheated at home. Not sure why! Service here is fast and attentive. They refilled my water with a quick wave. A great Korean spot for tofu soup that isn't super expensive. I ordered the Soondubu Jjigae Soup with beef which comes with a bowl of white rice for $18.49. I was originally worried there wouldn't be enough beef, because I usually opt for some sort of tofu soup/galbi combo, but I really enjoyed this meal. It was perfectly comforting with a lot of beef and big chunks of tofu. I ordered it not spicy, and chose to add in kimchi to adjust the level myself since the slice options online were pretty limited. I really appreciated how it came with a variety banchan dishes (including a separate container of kimchi that I used for the overall soup flavouring). Came here for dinner with my gf for dinner on a Friday evening. Restaurants are usually jammed packed in the K-Town area, especially on that one black where everything is. We were surprised to walk in and be seated immediately. We shared an order of the Ju Mok Bokum ($38), which consisted of stir fry baby octopus with Berkshire pork with vegetables and noodles in a house special Gochujang sauce. The portion the large enough to make both of us full. The baby octopus and Berkshire pork were the best part of the dish with the flavor of the sweet and spiciness of the Gochujang sauce. Its got noodles and veggies so you get your carbs, protein, and veggies all in one dish. The food comes with the standard small plate appetizers you typically expect at a Korean restaurant: kimchi, mac salad, tofu, and other items I can't think of. They only gave us one cup of rice, which I wished they gave us two, but I think it's because we only ordered one dish. The Ju Mok Bokum goes really well with the rice, especially the Gochujang sauce. I always love coming to Five Senses. The service is very quick, and the seating area is pretty spacious with large tables. It's a pretty typical Korean restaurant, and it has a great selection of dishes and banchan. I got the yuk gae jang ramen soup, although I normally get the army stew. Both are absolutely amazing, but I would suggest the army soup if I had to pick one. My friends got the stir fried ramen noodles and the hot stone bibimbap, and both also loved theirs. The portions are also pretty large, so you definitely won't leave hungry. We also decided to get the haemul cheese tteokbokki -- also fantastic with plenty of rice cakes and seafood! This place was delicious! Came here on a Wednesday around 5:30pm for dinner and seemed like we just beat the dinner crowd. We were immediately seated and pleasantly surprised by attentive, friendly servers. We got the short rib appetizer, dolsot beef bibimpap and kimchi fried rice. The short ribs were so delicious. It's a little on the sweet side, but I don't mind because there was so much flavor and savory notes as well. It comes with clear glass noodles and root veggies as well, which were all very delicious. The kimchi fried rice comes in a hot stone pot with a freshly cracked egg and topped with cheese. It is a unique take on a classic and was good. I'm not the hugest fan of kimchi fried rice but my brother in law seemed to enjoy it. The dolsot bibimpap is a classic, so I would've been disappointed if it didn't turn out great. Good thing it was just as delicious as everything else! FYI, the portions of the entrees are huge so we definitely could have shared more. They have tons of signs outside the restaurant about needing proof of vaccination but no one checked which seemed odd. Service is pretty standard when it comes to Asian restaurants - quick and efficient with little to zero niceties, which is fine by me. Food wise - it was all pretty good.
