Great upscale breakfast/lunch spot. We were looking to get out for lunch during the week and picked Flair based on Yelp reviews, and we're glad we did. The place is open, light, and airy. Tables are mostly four-tops with a couple larger tables by the window. There is a bar with a few stools for singletons. We were there for lunch and the menu had several items I might have liked to try: soups, salads, sandwiches... you get it. Our server was friendly and witty and helped me pick between two salads that both looked yummy. My companion picked the salmon. We were both impressed with the freshness, taste, and presentation of our selections. The wine selection is outstanding, and they even had a non-alcoholic beer for me (dry January). The prices are reasonable for what we received, and we'll be back. BTW, the breakfast menu looks even better, although we don't go out to breakfast much. read more

My friends and I decided at the last minute to have dinner together in Chapel Hill and lucked out in finding an open reservation at Flair restaurant on a Saturday night. The decor is upscale, classy, and inviting. Each of us loved what we ordered. The order of calamari was delicious but on the small side - it would barely be enough for 2 people to share. The huge main dishes made up for it! We ordered: Braised Short rib - my husband said it was the best he's ever had! Dijon crusted salmon with puréed parsnip - I loved this dish. The crispy coating was delicious. I requested it to be cooked as rare as possible. It was perfect! Blackened salmon with mushroom risotto - my friend said it was great! Herb chicken Milanese with gnocchi and arugula salad - my friend said her leftovers were just as good the next day! The dessert menu looked great but we were too full to try anything. I am happy to say that Flair is my favorite standby restaurant in this area. Over the years it has improved quietly on all selections on their menu, the quality, and variety of their dishes offering something for everyone... Yet all is exceptionally well prepared. And the service is impeccable, attentive, welcoming, and unobtrusive. How often does it happen that we are out with friends in a "hot" restaurant , seated around a table with good foods, but the atmosphere makes it impossible to have a meaningful conversation? you got to scream at each other over the loud music or the beat... or the waiter/ waitress interrupts you constantly when you are engaged in a conversation? Or presents their life story to you as if you came there to become their best buddy-- not because you want to enjoy a delicious meal with your own friends? I came across Flair when searching for a nice dinner restaurant after my brother's UNC graduation. I was able to make a last minute reservation for Saturday at 7:45 pm. When I first stepped foot inside the restaurant, I was immediately impressed. The interior was modernly decorated and gave a distinguished, yet intimate atmosphere associated with a nice restaurant. For our appetizers, we ordered the smoked salmon tartare and tempura fish bites. For our entrees, we got the smoked salmon mornay, dijon-crusted salmon, steak frites, and chicken roulade. Each of the dishes, although they took some time to arrive, were beautifully presented on their respective plates. The smoked salmon tartare was unique as it came with small slices of bread to eat with. The tempura fish bites were delicious with the associated sauce, but it resembles more fried fish than tempura. The smoked salmon mornay was my dream dish -- including both smoked salmon and avocado, what more could I ask for? The sauce was rich and creamy and tied the whole dish together. The steak frites were alright but the amount of steak seemed a bit small. My dad was not particularly impressed with his chicken roulade, although he noted that the mashed potatoes were nicely buttery. Unfortunately, I failed to grab a picture during my meal today. However, we were so pleasantly surprised with this restaurant. The interior is gorgeous. Atmosphere is absolutely delightful for dining. The wait staff was all incredibly kind, courteous and helpful. We came for brunch and the menu had a nice selection of brunch dishes, specials, as well as lunch options. I had an omelette which was cooked perfectly. I wanted to take my parents to a nice Sunday brunch in Chapel Hill. Flair Restaurant popped up as one of the top search results on Yelp with a lofty 4.5-star rating and well over 100 reviews (usually, a good sign). Unfortunately, we didn't have a great experience. While the food was OK/good, service could've been better. Our server was friendly and I think she tried, but we were forgotten for long stretches of time. Tables were seated after and served before us. I don't know if it was a training issue (the server seemed kind of green) and/or staffing issue or what, but the lackluster service left a poor impression of this place on us. That said, I could see our experience being different on a different day. Maybe we were just unlucky. Flair opened in April 2017 in the space previously occupied by Bean & Barrel, a coffee shop, bar, and grill. I believe elements of Bean & Barrel remain. Flair has a coffee and wine bar, complete with barrels above (suspended from the ceiling) and even a drive-thru window (though I'm not sure Flair uses it). Outside, the storefront sign says "Flair Fusion Restaurant" (Google shows that too). Our menus and receipt said "Flair Restaurant & Wine Bar." I consider this a New American restaurant. More on the menu below. Inside and out, the restaurant is nice. It's got a classy, casual vibe with a modern, eclectic, and perhaps busy interior design. Light colors and wine-themed. The covered storefront patio is small. This is a cozy place. We were seated in the side dining room, next to the semi-open kitchen. I booked our reservations via Yelp (party of four). On a Sunday at noon, this place was busy. A lot of the customers were older and/or elderly. The Carolina Meadows retirement community is nearby and Governors Club is just across the street. This is an interesting part of Chapel Hill, sort of a unique enclave away from the "city." At the time of writing this review, brunch is served every Saturday and Sunday, 11:00am-2:00pm. The brunch menu contained starters like Hummus & Tzatziki with Pita Bread ($12.95) and Guacamole Bruschetta ($12.95), soups and salads, brunch items such as a Quiche of the Day ($15.95) and French Quarter Frittata ($16.95), and sandwiches and burgers. Here's what we ordered: Starters * Fried Green Tomatoes ($10.95) - fresh green tomatoes, pimento cheese with buttermilk ranch * Smoked Salmon Tartare ($13.95) - horseradish sauce, capers, red onions, pistou, Russian black bread crostini Brunch * Seafood Crepe ($19.95) - scallops, shrimp, salmon, capers, cherry tomatoes, arugula, asparagus, caramelized onions, dill beurre blanc sauce * Country Eggs Benedict ($16.95) - Hollandaise sauce, poached egg, and Canadian bacon on fried green tomatoes, with fresh greens * Blueberry Pancakes ($16.95) - mixed berry butter, berry compote, whipped cream, maple syrup Sandwich & Burgers * Country Cuban ($16.95) - country ham, pulled pork, Gruyere, whole grain mustard, pickle relish, brioche Dessert * Blueberry White Chocolate Bread Pudding ($10.95) - warm bread pudding, lemon white chocolate ganache, caramel, vanilla ice cream Drinks * Coffee ($3.45) * Cappuccino (large, $5.45) * Orange Juice ($3.45) As mentioned above, the food was OK/good. There wasn't a memorable must-have dish to me, but nothing was bad either. My mom is a fan of fried green tomatoes and I think she enjoyed Flair's version, topped with melted, hardened pimento cheese. The cool ranch went well with the tomatoes. The Smoked Salmon Tartare was A-OK. It tasted fresh. The Russian black bread crostini was made out of rye bread, I think. Pistou, which is a French green sauce made with garlic, basil, and olive oil, was drizzled on top of the crostini. A nice touch. I think my dad was satisfied with the Seafood Crepe. I'm allergic to shrimp so I couldn't try it. It looked decent with a nice variety of ingredients. The Country Eggs Benedict was alright, but there was a discrepancy on the menu. Instead of being served on fried green tomatoes, the eggs and ham were served on what I believe was a toasted English muffin, so that was disappointing. Also, the ham (Canadian bacon) tasted a little dry and plain. I liked the Blueberry Pancakes and Country Cuban. The portion size on the pancakes was generous. The pancakes were delectable and comforting. The berry compote on top consisted of blueberries, raspberries, and I think strawberries. The Country Cuban was solid. It was warm and tasty, with yummy bread and a gratifying, savory filling. The dessert menu had seven options priced at $9.95 to $12.95 each. The Blueberry White Chocolate Bread Pudding was good. It was sweet and decadent. Appetizing texture. My mom, who is Thai, recognized that on top of the ice cream and bread pudding was a Thai crispy coconut roll. You can get them at Costco. The drinks were fine. The Cappuccino hit the spot. It just took a really long time for everything, including our drink order, to come out. I wish the service was better. read more

I looked on the internet for brunch places to try in Chapel Hill, and hit upon Flair. We decided to drive from Raleigh and check it out, and we are so glad we did.The decor is uptown as well as comfortable. We shared a beet and goat cheese salad, which actually could have fed three people. Jerry had the seafood crepe and I had the bacon quiche. We can't wait to go back and try other meals. The owner came to our table and chatted for a bit, and we found out that they own the Italian restaurant across the parking lot called Tarantini. Final formal meal for me on this NC trip and what a way to go back home The food is amazingly flavorful and delicious! It is a fusion restaurant so it's American food blended with Asian food The ambiance has an upscale French cafe vibe and you can just go in and buy coffee if you wanted to and grab a scone or muffin so that is nice to have a casual coffee shop for a quick grab and go Great customer service all around! Friendly! The only thing that was a little on the annoying side is where I was seated I felt in the way not by the people coming and out but by the kitchen staff who kept coming by with carts in and out and I kept thinking why don't they go along a route where it's not busy but could be how they place is and there is no other route but I'm not going to knock it because it was really just this table location as I most of the other tables wouldn't have this issue But this place is really great! read more

My Mom and I were visiting my daughter at UNC and we wanted to find a great brunch spot that we all could enjoy. I searched a few places and Flair seemed to be the best option. We made reservations because we were unsure if they would be busy and we didn't want a long wait. When we arrived we were received with a warm welcome. The decor was clean and inviting. We were immediately seated at the location of our choice. Once seated our waiter came over shortly after to discuss specials. We all quickly decided on our meals. We ordered 2 kinds of quiche and the special, short ribs served over a bed of grits...and a beet salad. We also ordered pastries to go. There wasn't one complaint at our table. We really enjoyed our meal and the service was excellent. If I'm ever in the area again I will definitely return to Flair. read more

The food was decent, and the ambiance was pleasant, but I was quite disappointed with the service. I feel like my food photos might make the place look better than it felt. Unfortunately, the energy from the wait staff was cold and unwelcoming, which made me uncomfortable, like I had done something wrong just by being there. After reading other reviews, I realized I'm not alone in feeling this way. As a minority visiting the South, I was already a bit nervous, and this was the first restaurant I went to. When we arrived, there were only 2-3 tables dining, so the staff wasn't busy. We stood there waiting to be seated and were greeted with a cold attitude--no smiles, just a quick "over there." It set an uncomfortable tone for the meal, and I felt ignored and invisible throughout the experience. I even tried being extra friendly, hoping it would lighten the mood, but it made me feel small, like I was trying to fit in with the 'cool kids' but was being iced out. Thankfully, this was the only place where I had this kind of experience during my trip. The rest of the restaurants I visited were warm and welcoming, and I had a lovely time overall. My family and I booked the private room at Flair to celebrate my grad school graduation. There were 18 of us total and the room was perfect for my group - elegant and easy to hear everyone at the tables! Elaine was wonderful to work with prior to this dinner - she suggested that I have my guests choose their entrees in advance to ensure for a smooth evening and this was a great tip! It was also exciting to choose some items from Tarantini's Italian menu. My family chose to offer fried ravioli, brussel sprouts, bruschetta, and fried green tomatoes as apps - they were all amazing!!! Especially the fried green tomatoes! We then gave guests these entree options (in advance) to choose from: chicken beurre blanc, Dijon crusted salmon, lasagna, mushroom ravioli, eggplant parm, chicken piccata, and a shrimp curry bowl. Very good neighbourhood restaurant. While the food was very good, it was the service and atmosphere that got me. Friendly, helpful with very good food. I had the salmon tartare to start, high had more flavour than your typical fish tartare. I also tried one of my wife's fried green tomatoes, and that was perfect. I love fried green tomatoes in general and here it is topped with pimento cheese, which works very well. As a main, I had the duck special, which was also excellent. What really made it sing was the squash purée and the Brussels sprouts, but also a nice portion of duck. Quite a nice meal. read more

Underwhelming. I had lamb shank with risotto. The lamb was bland, had a gamey taste and the risotto was crunchy. My wife had coconut shrimp which was bland a tasteless. Another problem was the fact that our meals were delivered within 5 minutes after ordering, proving the risotto was not made fresh. The service was less then adequate for a nice restaurant. This is one of my new favorite restaurants. I took my daughter to dinner for her Sweet 16 Daddy/Daughter dinner. The food was amazing! I had the Short Rib Ragu over pappadelle and my daughter had the Shrimp and Grits. Both dishes were well prepared, presented and received! We started off with the Guacamole Bruschetta which had a very fresh, smooth flavor with a hint of tanginess. Very refreshing. And we ended the meal with a wonderful Creme Brulee and the Blueberry Bread Pudding. Again, very well presented. Both were thoroughly enjoyed. The service was very prompt and the staff was very attentive. We even had an opportunity to speak to the owner who shared the history of Flair and its sister restaurant Tarantini. The ambiance of this restaurant is very welcoming and open. Although there are dark wood highlights; the restaurant is very bright and open. Definitely add this to your list of places to dine in Chapel Hill especially if you want delicious food for those with a gluten allergy. read more

Expensive for what it is. So I'm a tad bit torn here. Food was excellent. Service was ok - Took 2 hours - when we walked in there were only 4 other tables sat. Staff was knowledgeable but food and getting the check took forever. We had the Greek chicken (excellent), lobster ravioli (more on this later), crab cake special (excellent) and the short rib special (excellent). The lobster ravioli said it came with scallops, salmon (?) and other seafood proteins. I guess the proteins were chopped very fine into the red sauce as I couldn't find anything (and did look). The ravioli themselves and the sauce was tasty. Frankly I got the dish just to see what it was as it looked like a very complicated dish - it was. My issue here is two fold - one I feel it's very expensive for what it is - in a strip mall / food lion parking lot and the menu was all over the board - seems it's a steak house/ burger place with a couple fried rice dishes to appear a "fusion" restaurant. They are trying - the decor is a bit over done (marble statues in the hallway to the bathroom??). They do have lots of gluten free options so that's good. Then the prices - it was $200 for 4 with the only alcohol being 1 glass of an inexpensive wine. So - we will try again - I'd suggest trying it but be selective in the menu choices and be ready to pay $$$. read more

My boyfriend and I have had 2 great experiences here. To me, Saturday mornings are perfect for their blueberry pancakes with a side of really high-quality bacon. It's so good and the only thing I've gotten. The first time we went, he got the shrimp and grits, which was really good. The grit cake is a nice touch and probably keeps them from having to make a pot of grits. Cheers for efficiency. The second time we went, he got the New Orleans egg souffle (I can't remember the exact name). He said it was bland but still pretty solid.
