If you put a Waba Grill side-by-side Frame Broiler would go broke. Flame Broiler is not cheap and you are super hungry you get a better value from Chipotle (probably twice the portion for the same price). Flame Broiler grilled chicken or steak is prepared ahead of time in small batches. The steak tastes more like steamed meat than grilled steak, but isn't horrible. Waba Grill is ten times better. Here's the problem if you are looking to part with ten bucks for a bowl. The portions of chicken or steak are cheap. I watched them lose a customer just today. The guy got half/half chicken and steak. He got less than half a scoop of steak (it was clearly short) and he asked for a little more beef. They asked him if he wanted "extra" meat so they could charge him more for an already expensive bowl. He declined and was clearly not happy. He won't be back. They lost a customer then and there. There's a Waba down the street and right next door is Chipotle. The bowl determines how much stuff an employee can add. After adding the rice and vegetables, they should put a heaping scoop of protein. There's no way to over do it because it has to fit on top. The portion control (important for all restaurants) is build into the serving container already filled with rice and vegetables. They have a choice. Save 15 cents worth of protein on each random customers that walks, or give the customer value and establish them as a regular. Customers will not complain, they just won't ever come back. Likewise, you can get just cabbage with vegetables with no carrots or broccoli or anything else. Poor quality control. Servers who don't care. Clearly "be cheap" seems to be the marching orders. I'm no longer going to patronize this restaurant. Clearly Flame Broiler doesn't get it. They are going to portion control themselves right out of business. Hopefully that happens and they replace it with a far superior Waba Grill. There is an easy fix, top off the bowl with a healthy scoop(s) of protein and build up a repeat customer base. Maybe Flame Broiler management needs to try Chipotle and compare its stock price to this two-bit operation. Chipotle did not get to that point being cheapskates. read more

So it has only been recently that I have started eating at Flame Broiler. I wish I started eating here sooner! So it is supposed to be healthy, and I'm not sure if it actually is or not but I am sure that it is pretty delicious. It's pretty simple yet very good and satisfying. Their beef is pretty good although their tofu is usually made as it's ordered so it's extra fresh. Their magic sauce and hot sauces are great as well. I get the triple fire hot sauce and don't make the same mistake that I did and drown your food with it. It's actually pretty hot. I love coming here, I just wish it was a little cheaper but I guess it's because it's (supposedly) healthy. read more

I'm giving this restaurant one star because every time I crave flame broiler, I get it, but every time I come to this location I get very disappointed. The meat is dry and is over cooked. I know someone that use to work here and they actually told me that they "reheat" the meats by putting it back on the grill over and over again when they don't have any customers. I've been to every flame broiler in San Diego. For some reason the quality of this particular location is so much less compared to all the other locations I've been. Normally they don't weigh the meat out and it's a good portion. At this location they did, which I understand they want to control portions to save money, but it's very odd as it isn't the same at other locations. It's not a huge deal but I normally get a nice big full mini bowl and it's spilling over, here there was a lot of space in the bowl. The meat also tasted vastly different. The chicken definitely tasted sub par and the beef was dry and not as flavorful as I remember it at the other locations. Didn't seem like it was prepared the same as other locations. Also, for the vegetables they gave an extremely conservative portion, again unusual for flame broiler. And they didn't have zucchini at this location! Over all due to the inconsistencies in how this flame broiler is run, it doesn't equal the great product it can be. Of course it was edible and a decent lunch with some flavor. But every bite didn't remind me of why I need to come back to eat here again. The reason people love McDonald's is because they have 100% consistency with all of their thousands of locations no matter where you are. You can get Brown or White rice Next you select what type of meat so I got half and half which is half beef and half chicken then you get your veggies and some chop green onions to top it off . Perfect for a Rice Bowl !! Then you can get ready to enjoy your yummy Rice Bowl !! This location is located in the Mira Mesa Mall where the old Starbucks use to be . The service is good also here . Both chicken and beef although hot but both DRY as heck, as most of your Yelp reviewers had also agreed. When I was there in the slow 4pm time, the cook had just finished cooking up new batch -- 3 lbs of meat and placed them into the warming tray. Are you kidding me?! There was no customers in the store and dinner rush wasn't for another hour or two?!!! Why would you do that, this might work for Chipotle or Mexican with tortilla and guac burrito but for rice dishes, meats need to FRESH COOKED or at least re-warmed before serving to each fresh customer! You should consider cooking the meats half way into the warming bin and fully re-cook them per customer's fresh orders to raise quality standards. I wish you well, please raise your game with moister meats. We all crave fresh cooked meat rather than the opposite, as this is what customers crave when we pay for our food. We have been to the Mira Mesa Flame Broiler 3 times. The first time was "okay," but the next time when I came in with a coupon, I was told is "privately owned" and don't accept the general Frame Broiler coupons. The next time, I brought the "right" coupon for 1 free regular bowl with the purchase of another and got our 2 sodas off, but no free bowl, which was $3.85 more than the discount. Every experience I've had there has been poor. I don't think they really want my business so I will be happy to oblige. There's another Flame Broiler at the Sorrento food court and a GREAT Waba Grill at Mira Mesa and Camino Santa Fe. We'll be going there instead. read more

Wanted to find something with protein and carbs that wasn't too fattening or greasy.. despite the prior yelp reviews concerning portion sizes wanted to give flame broiler a try ... Came here and service was friendly... looked at the menu and opted for the half and half bowl with rice and veggies.. saw that it was 5 oz of protein (I appreciate the transparency) and opted to get extra steak for $3 more... so I knew the bowl was going to be around $10.. Right away I saw that the meats were all pre cut sitting in metal bins covered with plastic trays.. that set off a red light... (unlike chipotle where the bins just hold enough fresh cut meat and are not covered ) I looked in the corner in the food prep and there were huge batches of pre cooked chicken being cut up and put in big stainless steel bins... The Angus steak that I received looked almost boiled with hardly any of the "charring" from the charbroiled cooking process.. Started eating and my fiancé and I immediately noticed how bland the meat was... had to put a lot of sauce to get any taste out of the food... Also got a couple real fatty tendon pieces from the chicken.... When I used to go to waba grill (stopped going cuz portions got really small) they always were freshly cooking meat and everytime I ordered I saw the meat coming off the grill and cut up right away, not coming out of a metal tub .. I definitely recommend other places like waba grill or L&Ls for better taste and better portions. It's a little different from what I'm used to but it's not such a big deal to me. They have everything ready behind the counter so you just tell them what you want and they make your bowl right there kind of like what you would do at a Poki restaurant. Which is cool because it speeds things up a lot. I used to go to the one in Sorrento and I would always have to call ahead so my order would be ready by the time I got there. Plenty of parking and the bowls are for a decent price. Customer service is okay whenever I go. I usually come here because I have a stamp card but today they refused to stamp because I also had a coupon. Apparently I have to pay full price to get a measly stamp on a cheap card. I ended up getting a chicken plate with like one pathetic scoop of meat. I asked to add avocado and they charged me like two bucks for a tiny half slice, I ended up paying $12 for it, and the chicken was dry, burnt and bland, the veggies were hard and cold, and the rice was hard. I came here to enjoy Asian f ood and this is a poor excuse. My 85 year old grandmother could serve me chicken and rice for free. After my experience today I will never dine here again read more

My service experience however was terrible, I asked the staff several times for a drink, but they didn't give it to me, gave me a kimchi packet "because it's free", started laughing and then still didn't give a drink. It really bums me out to write this because my family and I usually come here about once a week for a quick healthy dinner. Some background information: my husband has been a vegetarian for three years and gets violently ill when he eats meat because he hasn't eaten it for so long. When we walked in last night, there was chicken being cooked on the grill behind the counter. We both ordered the tofu bowls. They said it would be out in a couple minutes because they don't precook the tofu the way they do with the meat, so we paid for our food and drinks and went to get a table. Later, when he almost done eating, he says, "I think there's meat in my mouth." He has spent the past 20 hours in the bathroom, emptying his bowels in a manner that sounds quite aggressive from what I can hear from where I'm sitting in the living room. We hypothesize that the chicken on the grill got mixed in with our tofu. (I'm not vegetarian so meat doesn't bother me) Tl;dr: they gave my vegetarian husband some meat with his tofu bowl and now he's very sick. If Flame Broiler is reading this: Please take measures to prevent cross-contamination in the future. read more

Terrible service. No managers in duty to handle complaints. Ordered online. When my boyfriend went to pick up he gave my name and his name they had no traces of my order that was already paid for through Postmates. They made him pay for a new order. As he brought it to me while I was on lunch he explained that nothing was ready. The order was placed at 1215 and supposed to be ready in 5 minutes. It was picked up at 1245 and everyone's running around confused. I called and told her my order was messed up and she claimed my own boyfriend didn't know my own name. He was listening in on speaker and corrected her (Lydia) that he said he told he he wasn't sure if they order was under my name or his but he gave her both of ours. I told her I needed a refund ASAP on the order that I paid for she said she wasn't able to because she has no clue what my order was. I told her I paid through postmates then proceeded to ask for a manager. She said there was no manager on duty and I have to come back in to get a refund I said that's not possible because I'm at work and it needs to be done over the phone. She responds "no you need to come in because I can't do it right now" she gives me her managers cell number. How unprofessional is that probably not even managers number. Pretty unprofessional.
