Our waiter, Danny was quick to respond to our needs and take our orders, and was pretty engaging. The manager Dave was so accommodating to a party of 11 people. He was so polite and charming. He kept our best interests in mind the whole night. The staff's efforts made my birthday one to remember. In terms of food, my party left extremely full. I really want/wanted to like Flame. I've given them so many chances. I went pre-pandemic and post. Every time there's always something missing... The food is fine. It's hibachi and seems to be on the same level as a chain hibachi spot (but I don't think it's a chain?). The service is maybe a level below the food. While it's not horrible, every time I've been there's just been something off. Last time, as an example, I ordered the hibachi grill (outside, so not at the grill itself) and noticed something on a table saying it came with a free beer, so I ordered one of those, too. At the end of the meal I was charged for the beer. I called it out to the server and he was nice about it and all, but said I should have told him I wanted the special with the free beer. Odd thing to say. I'm trying to give everyone the benefit of the doubt right now, so no biggie. It's just not my go to spot with so many other good places in a block radius. read more

The vegetarian sushi menu wasn't impressive. I had to specifically ask if they had sweet potato rolls, which they did, but it leaves me wondering what else they "have" that isn't on the menu. I also struggled to find minimal tofu options elsewhere on the menu (I think there was maybe one appetizer and one or a few entrees). Sweet potato roll was my favorite. Vegetable tempura roll might have been good but it contained mushrooms and I am a freak vegetarian that does not like mushrooms. Avocado roll was decent but I've had better. Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday, as most of the people there. The restaurant is surly large with multiple hibachi stations. Apparently they are very strict with being on time and send multiple reminders which is understandable. Our hibachi station however stopped working 5 minutes into the celebration and we waited for about 30 minutes watching our limo food on the grill and waiting for the grill to hopefully come back on. Another 15 minutes went by and surprisingly no one thought to move us to another grill, however our food was transferred over to the party sitting adjacent to us and cooked on their grill and then dished onto our plates. At this time we were very disappointed, and the other party at our table suggested that we get a huge discount. I ended up getting sushi, which was ok. When our bill came we were given $12 off, which was shocking giving we missed out on the entire experience. Thanks to the bold woman in the party sitting by us who gave the manager a good lesson on running a business we ended up getting 50% off our meals. The steaks were $15 each, and came with an appetizer and a good portion of veggies on the side: mushrooms, squash, zucchini, broccoli, etc. I got the golden tofu appetizer while my friend got Tom Yum soup (yum!!). My friend got her steak medium rare, while I got mine medium. Both were DELICIOUS!!! And so perfectly seasoned!! Our hibachi chef really catered to the two little girls and tried so hard it became annoying. He does a few new moves that we had not seen before but basically similar to any other hibachi restaurants. The meal here includes one app, main, and white rice. I'm used to getting soup and salad. I chose the salad and was not a fan of the ginger dressing...sweet and too creamy, not enough ginger. The meal itself...I got the filet and shrimp combo and it was very good. We paid extra ($4) for the fried rice. The steak had a bit too much pepper for my friend but all in all a good meal. We ordered takeout and tried the crispy duck buns and indian roti for appetizers (they were out of the duck mini tacos) and for entrees got the short rib massaman curry and shaking beef (they were out of the oink oink fried rice). The crispy duck buns were good, but lacking flavor. The roti was really oily, but the massaman dipping sauce it came with was tasty (although also very oily). The shaking beef lacked flavor, though the beef was extremely tender and perfectly cooked. I ended up adding the roti dipping sauce to it to give it some more flavor. The short rib was also cooked to perfection and was in the same tasty but oily massaman curry. Overall the meal was good, but I don't know if we feel strongly about going back. If we did, we would try other dishes. It was also unfortunate that they were out of the two dishes we wanted to try. read more

Several years ago when Flame was on Amsterdam Ave., I visited numerous times. It was friendly, lively and very enjoyable. Then when they moved to W, 82 St., shortly after that location opened, I visited & had an enjoyable sushi meal at the bar. Something has changed over the years. The place is what I would call stark, and the waiters couldn't care less whether they serve you or not. I went for lunch today and asked for the Sushi Bar. Turns out they have no sushi bar; so I was escorted to a back room with tables and no atmosphere. I was the only patron in the entire place. Shortly after, a couple of ladies came in and sat down to eat, but we turned out to be the only luncheon patrons. When I arrived, the waiter acted as if he were doing me a favor to seat me. I felt uncomfortable all the while I was there and just wanted to eat and get out of there. Several things regarding the service did not sit well with me, including telling me he could not provide hot sake and then deciding he could. When he brought my plate of sashimi, he set it so far from me across the table, I had to get up and place it in front of me, which is what he should have done in the first place. With regard to the food, the service was swift. The food arrived quickly. I ordered hot sake, sashimi lunch, and white rice. The sashimi lunch came with miso soup & salad. The sake was very good. The miso soup was terrible, worse I ever had. Dishwater probably would have tasted better. I just didn't eat it. I can't fault the sashimi. It was 9 pieces of the standard pieces you get in most sushi restaurants and very fresh. Usually a sushi place offers soup or salad and rice, but this place served the soup as well as a huge green salad, which was ridiculously large and could have served as a main course. The dressing was good, but only enough to eat about one-third of the greens, which were very fresh. (I noticed the 2 ladies also ate very little of their salad). Although I ordered white rice, I got sushi rice. The waiter never bothered to ask me which I prefer. The prices for a sushi restaurant were quite reasonable. I went out of my way to go to this place and, overall, I was very disappointed. Unless I decide in the future to try the hibachi, I won't return. This is the best hibachi restaurant that I have been to! The food was so delicious and well seasoned. I had the beef dumplings for my appetizer and I had the shrimp and scallops for dinner with fried rice and vegetables. The food was amazing. The hibachi experience was also very enjoyable the chef was funny and interactive. He gave everyone at the table sake which was good. That was my first time trying it. The food was great and the atmosphere was very nice. The reason for the four star rating is that fact they don't have range hoods above the tables. This is the ultimate date night spot! The restaurant is beautiful and I loved the atmosphere because it was low key and romantic. My boyfriend and I had their special which includes 2 special rolls with 2 classic rolls free and an avocado salad as an appetizer. The sushi was exquisite! So fresh and flavorful and we were more than satisfied. Even the avocado salad was good. Next time i come I will try the hibachi because it smelled amazingggg and it looked like so much fun but you def need a reservation for that. I reviewed the menu and placed my order, The cooks were very entertaining and attentive. The food was amazing. I don't eat egg so they were very accommodating to my dietary restrictions. The atmosphere was very delightful. The only thing I would say is the happy hour prices doesn't apply when you are seated at the table which I was very disappointed about. Found this place when my friend and I got hungry after strolling through Central Park. The place has a nice ambiance and our water was super sweet. We ordered a couple of things since we were starving! First we had the miso soup which was really yummy. Then we moved on to the Steam Souo Dumpling. It was my first time having it and wowowow it was insane. I got the Hot Loved sushi roll and definitely recommend. The tempura shrimp was so crunchy, it makes my mouth water thinking about it. I can only speak for what I got: shrimp dumplings, scallion pancake, and a few rolls. But they were delicious! Fresh, flavorful, and exactly what I was looking for. We ordered the dim sum sampler and general tso's meatballs for appetizers. They were both great-especially the meatballs. We also had some sushi which was awesome. I recommend the lobster tempura special roll (forgot the name). I found the prices to be very fair as well, considering it is NYC. I was a fan of the décor of the restaurant. It was very clean and trendy looking. My only complaint is that there are no martinis on the cocktail menu. When I asked the waiter if he could suggest a fruity type of martini, he really didn't know what I was saying and appeared 30 minutes later with a peach flavored vodka drink. This place is super popular with the under 10 set, and birthday kids of all ages. There are bursts of flame with out-of-tune renditions of "Happy Birthday" every few minutes. The food is fine--nothing will poison you, but nothing will thrill someone who periodically dines out in NYC, either. Flame is, in short, a nominally Japanese-influenced Cheesecake Factory with a show. The pros: hibachi chefs are entertaining for kids and "kids." No matter how old you are, trying to catch food in your mouth never gets old. And fire never, ever goes out of style. Our talented chef cooked our food to the exact right temperature each guest requested -- no small feat given that all of us ordered different items at different temperatures. Quality of the food was so-so. We liked the fresh summer squash sauteed on the grill, the perfectly cooked little broccoli florets, the cool onion volcano (though the onions were undercooked when served). Mushroom haters would've liked a chance to opt out. Filet mignon was appropriately tender and cooked to a perfect medium rare as requested. Chicken was unobjectionable. Seafood was ok, with each option cooked to a good temperature, but not of good intrinsic quality. Everything was a bit fishy -- about as fresh as a midwestern Cheesecake Factory might serve it -- but nicely seasoned with what tasted like diluted, sweetened soy sauce. We enjoyed all the staff except for the really bitchy little man acting as host on the evening we dined, who would benefit from hospitality lessons. Given the theatrics, I get the appeal. Anyways, we were craving hibachi and decided to give this place a try. Apparently, in NYC, noodles and fried rice are EXTRA. Just FYI, this might be more expensive than what you are used to.
