We've come to Flora a couple of times and will certainly be returning! It's on the list of places we would bring out of town friends to. It's kept the feel of the former Dunlavy, so it's got a great vibe. They also have a great patio, which is shaded and has fans so it's actually nice to sit outside even during Houston's summer heat. And the location is nice to walk around before or after your meal. I love a good octopus, and the charred octopus at Flora does not disappoint! We've gotten it each time we've been. The shrimp tacos, tuna tostada, and ceviches have all been great as well. We've tried their flan for dessert and it's been on point. The only downside is the prices here seem a bit exorbitant for what you get. read more

I was really apprehensive to eat here after seeing so many negative reviews, but an old friend was in town and this was where they wanted to go. Valet only for $5+tip. This I would say was the only "inconvenience" I experienced, but really not the end of the world. I don't mind valet when parking is really limited, but I pulled in and drove through the whole lot with empty spots left and right (coned off) until I got to the valet station. When I see valet where there is just a giant parking lot in front of the venue it really makes me question if valet is necessary. Of course I was the only one from my party to arrive on time and the host let me choose to get seated at my table right away or wait for the party at the bar. That was nice, as they did offer to seat me even though 100% of the party hadn't arrived yet. I opted to just sit at the bar and get a water, and in the like 10 minutes I sat there at least 4 different bartenders checked on me to make sure I was ok and did not need anything else. The good service continued on throughout the rest of the night. According to my receipt our server was Elizabeth, and she was wonderful. She would talk to us about the portion sizes, tastes preferences, and made recommendations based on this. She was very patient with our larger party and made splitting the bill really efficient! On top of this, the restaurant closes at 11 and our table was the last party there til almost 12. We were not rushed at all and they let us hang out and have a great time until we were ready to leave. So overall top notch service experience. Onto the food. I had the red snapper ceviche and it was amazing! One of the best ceviches I've had, it was super limey and delicious. I really don't like seafood much except some ceviche and sushi, as I hate when it tastes "fishy" but this ceviche just tasted like delicious lime, perfect! I also had the al pastor tacos which was a good call as either of those two dishes alone would probably not have been enough food. (Especially since there is no free chips and salsa to munch on). The al pastor tacos were decent, but tiny and nothing to write home about. Good to help fill me up that's all. {{If you want good al pastor tacos (bigger & cheaper) go to Pistoleros on Westheimer. }} My friends all enjoyed their meals as well and we were all worried about portion sizes but left full. 2 people ordered the nachos as their meal and neither could finish their plate of nachos. I passed on ordering a cocktail as 9/10 times I am disappointed by the taste of the cocktail and the price I just paid for it. Tried one of my friend's tiny margaritas and so glad I passed, it just tasted like straight alcohol (I understand some people think this is a good thing, but not me, I want to enjoy my drink!) They give you pretty small water glasses, but the servers were always on top of refilling our water! I absolutely would go back here again! Went for Houston Restaurant Weeks. BEAUTIFUL location. Like a tree house! The food was very good, overpriced but good, and the service was lovely. But GOLLY, it was LOUD. We finally gave even trying to talk across the table. And as the lights got lower, and the disco ball came on, the music got even louder. We finally figured out they were trying to get us old fogies out of there for the 2nd seating, I guess. Elegant interior but that's where the elegance ends. The location is difficult to find/enter. Parking is limited to have to valet (it's not complimentary). Staff is impolite and not welcoming. Server was a complete idiot. Gave us incorrect menu and entree descriptions for 3 guests' food so we had to send them back and wait. Everyone else's food got cold waiting. Food is also mediocre. I get annoyed when fine dining focuses on appearance and ignores food quality or taste. This place is all hype. High prices- do not justify the poor experience. read more

My sister and I are in town for a concert so we decided to curate our experience with a mix of Houston-original eateries and familiar places. One of the new places we visited was FLORA on Saturday night. It's very confusing to get in and only valet is offered for an affordable $9. It's an efficient process overall once you piece it together, but I think it's valet only so that the business may squeeze more patrons into the lot. (There were cars in places that weren't parking spots EVERYWHERE, but they were parked nicely.) the valet staff was very nice as well as the hosts. The real issues did not begin until we got seated. Firstly, the restaurant space is gorgeous but EXTREMELY congested! You could reach out to the table next to you. I was not a fan. There was no level of intimacy. Plus there was no dress code. I wore a very nice cocktail dress but there were people wearing athletic clothing right next to me. Seemed a little off, but I digress. The huge issue was our server IVAN. He greeted our table fairly quickly but became rather despondent after my sister and I didn't want to indulge in $16 guacamole and didn't want to buy alcohol. I understand their prices are their prices, but we don't even like guacamole and didn't plan to drink as we had a long day and wanted to drive home safely. He didn't check on us, didn't ask us how the food was or anything. Yet, I saw a server at a neighboring table tell the story of the restaurant to her guests while actively engaging. That was discouraging and that's when I started to feel that something was OFF. Why wasn't my server at least trying to talk to us? Ivan's response defintely felt discriminatory. He got a $0 tip for the absent service he provided (I was a bartender and server for 5 years so I'm usually VERY understanding, but this service experience felt like a slap in the face!) Ivan saw this and confronted my sister about not tipping. She calmly responded "You didn't even talk to us. And you came by to say "Y'all ok" and scurried off before we could answer." He replied, "Oh I was really busy and other tables were ordering more food. I was trying my best." Well if that was his best, I'd hate to see his worst. Then he proceeded to beg us to not tell the manager about his behavior since we knew his name. Overall, very poor experience. I won't be coming back nor recommending anyone else to this spot. Side note. Our food came out and we got shrimp tacos, which were good but 3 small shrimp tacos with 2 shrimp each for $26 was as a reach. read more

I live right next to this place, and it's maybe a 3 minute bike ride from door to door. I stopped in today for the first time, and it's an amazing space. Great decor and great vibe on the way in. I sat down at the bar, as I was solo, and aside from getting a glass of water, no bartenders acknowledged me for maybe 5-10 minutes, despite there being only 2 other people at the bar. There are cameras at the bar, so I'm sure management can check the tapes. Once I was acknowledged, I ordered the Jacy, which was excellent. However, I never received or was offered a food menu at all. Once my drink was done, I was unable to get the bartender to look at me, so I placed my drink closer to the bar to imply that it's empty and I'd like another one. That never happened, and when I finally got the bartender's attention, I just closed my tab and left. This is not a cheap place, and the menu items all look excellent, but my first experience really took me by surprise. It was remarkably inattentive, and I don't want to assume, but it almost felt intentional, considering there were only 2 other people sitting at the bar. I want to come back, as a friend of mine has been wanting to try it, but I certainly hope the next experience is more in line with the branding and pricing of this place. Fingers crossed. read more

*I originally wrote and posted this review on 6/23/22 on the page for The Dunlavy because Flora had not created their own profile yet.* My husband and I went to dinner at Flora with another couple back in March and I really cannot tell you how underwhelmed we were with the experience. We started by ordering the $20 queso. We thought for $20 it must be fantastic, but boy were we wrong. When they brought it, it came with a scant single layer of chips and it had a congealed layer of cheese on top and was not warm. A gentleman (who I am assuming was the floor manager) stopped by our table at this time to ask how everything was. My friend asked him, is this tiny amount of cold queso really the whole dish? He replied that it was 4oz of queso which he seemed to mean as a justification. For reference most mexican restaurants in town serve an 8oz small queso for around $5-$8 and a 16oz large for around $15. I understand that this is an upscale restaurant but I honestly found this insulting. The rest of the food was *fine* but I really couldn't get over the price gouging for cold cheese and 12 chips. read more

First time here and everything was perfect. Ambiance in this place is unmatched. Beautiful view along with the nice decor. My sister and I sat at the bar. We ordered the guacamole, when it came out I was like ooook bland looking, but it was everything but bland. The guacamole was so authentic and tasty. We ordered drinks and each of them were delicious and strong... so strong I had to ask for a little juice. The bartender (I think his name was Danny) was the amazing he took my drink and mixed it slightly different so that I may enjoy it. We ordered several different items on the menu including shrimp nachos, chicken enchiladas (green sauce) and I forgot the other meal but they were all really good. It was worth the money spent. We were here for my friends birthday and enjoyed the place BUT some caveats.... The restaurant by itself is nice, BUT it did get super sweltering hot because it's essentially a greenhouse trapping all the heat in+ the windows don't do it that much favors. Still a super cute restaurant, and the views are stunning! No self parking available you HAVE to valet(it's $9) Now on to my caveat. The food was good, it's $$ but we expected that. My problem was our waiter. He was SO pushy. Kept trying to get us to order more than we wanted. It was so uncomfortable. At first we thought he was being extra attentive cause it was my friends bday, but every-time he came he kept suggesting random food items to add, even when we kept saying no. I get that, it drives up the tip amount, but my goodness he was so pushy and almost aggressive. Looked around and he kept doing that to JUST us. Whoever you are, just calm down my guy. Anyway. TLDR; nice views, decent food, gets HOT during summer and pushy+ aggressive waiter. read more

Came here for brunch on Sunday, and while they don't offer traditional brunch options or a separate brunch menu, it did not disappoint! Located in Buffalo Bayou Park, the venue is stunning. A gorgeous open space with multiple chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, it is very elegant. They offer outdoor seating as well. Unlike the restaurant that was here before, Flora is a full table service sit down restaurant. We were greeted by a friendly team who were knowledgeable about the menu and offered great suggestions. We ordered the sopacitos and ceviche for appetizers, and both were delicious. For main course, our table tried the chilaquiles, green mole, mole enchiladas, and the barbacoa de borrego. We enjoyed each item we tried. The chilaquiles and barbacoa were my favorite. For dessert we ordered the tres leches and churros, both which were amazing. All in all a great dining experience. Definitely upscale. I will mention that parking can be challenging, and unless you see a spot on the way in, you'll likely need to valet. read more

Boy! Did we get to celebrate in absolute style...Flora Mexican Kitchen was a gorgeous restaurant! The service was absolutely impeccable - MUCHAS GRACIAS mod Paco & waitress Andrea. The food was absolutely top notch to die for!! Every bite we had was simply scrumptious. We shared the Quinoa & Lentils salad. OMG! Most of us had Mole Poblano. I had it w brick chicken & others had it in Chicken Enchiladas. It was one of the #BESTMoles I have ever tasted! It was so unbelievable - I forgot to take a pic. We also recommend the Gratify Ceviche & Mojo de Ajo Shrimp. To finish it off, their Churros melted in your mouth. If you haven't gone, go try them out! You will not be disappointed. read more

Meh. It's OK. I've been here a couple of times. It's pretty pricey for basic Mexican food. Food is ok, average but not worth the $30-55 prices. With drinks and apps it came out to $65 pp plus tip. Lunch. That was lunch. There is also very few stalls so they force you to valet for $5. They do accept card. The drinks are ok. It's a cute spot but I don't think I'll come back. As a huge fajita fan I decided to try theirs, and I can honestly say it was some of the best tasting fajitas I've ever had. There was also this magical green sauce that came along with it that they honestly need to bottle up and sell. It was absolutely amazing. Whatever you order... Ask for the green sauce.
