We came early on a Saturday night and were accommodated right away despite being late to our reservation due to traffic. Our waitress gave the best recommendations. We had the cucumber cocktail- amazingly refreshing! We had the chickpea appetizer - delicious and unique as well! We also each had the chicken enchiladas, the waitresses number one recommendation- flavorful, and rich . The water guy was wonderful and came by our table 3x in our time there. That's saying something since in that time no one else came by and wait on us once we were seated. I always consider how busy establishments are before I make a judgement on service and it was not busy at 6:30p on a Tuesday to warrant for this lack of service. Less than subpar experience. The location is very cute great for pictures, but if you want a nice dining experience I would not recommend dining here. Where do I even begin. Firstly, we made a reservation two weeks in advance for the patio. We were left waiting, standing over half an hour, to then be asked seated inside or wait another 25 minutes for patio seating. That should've been our sign to leave. It was so loud in there you could barely hear yourself think much less have a conversation with the person across from you. We left with a headache from the blaring music and shouting conversations. Our drinks and nachos, if you can even call 6 stale chips with greasy ground beef and cold cheese nachos, came out fairly quickly. As did our enchiladas and pollo adobado which were both medicore at best. The best part were the refried beans and that's not saying much. It's not pictured but we also ordered the chocolate cake, which was basically an overpriced dessert you can find in the freezer section of your local H-E-B. Lastly, the valet situation... Don't get me wrong the attendants are super nice but they were so packed with cars that they didn't even have any open spots they were parking cars on the street bumper to bumper. We were sat at a small awkward table where our server seemed either socially anxious or just very unmannered. He would retire our plates early and seemed like he just wanted us to leave, as well as over hearing him talk about us to his coworker. Per reading other reviews I suppose this has happened to others, this restaurant has the potential of being 5 star if it's staff committed to giving guests excellent service instead of being so pretentious. It was cool and refreshing and extremely drinkable which led to my second margarita. For my meal, I ordered shrimp tacos with a side of guacamole. The shrimp tacos were beautifully presented and the taste was out of this world. They were so fresh and made with their in house corn tortillas. I forgot to mention the chickpea appetizer. It was a surprise hit. The chili lime heat on the outside mixed with the creamy inside. Not to mention the bits of garlic chips mixed in. Whoever thought of this dish is a creative genius. I think whatever you order on the menu it's going to be pleasing to the pallet. They pride themselves on super fresh ingredients which is the key to any wonderful dish. If you're expecting Tex-Mex and this is the wrong place for you. I highly recommend this place whether it's you're celebrating an event or it's a date night or girls night out. The only "wow" factor are the chandeliers but even that gets thrown off with the giant disco ball and club music. One tasted like limeade, and the other tasted like water with a splash of lime. On to the blah food. The Guacamole came on a plate, deconstructed. I don't get the concept, especially if it's on the exact same plate that we were given to eat off of. And there was no lime, barely any salt. For $16, we gotta mix our own flavorless guac? on a plate, not even in a bowl? The small bowl of Queso also had no flavor. Disappointing round of appetizers. Out of 6 entrees, one fish taco was thoroughly enjoyed. Everything else was...tragic. The Mole sauce is not good. The Lamb Barbacoa was dry and tasted like nothing. The Skirt Steak tasted burnt and salty. That's probably where the salt from all our other dishes went! The Short Ribs were decent, but killed with the Mole sauce. Tres Leches is really just booze with a side of cake. Flan tasted like straight caramel hard candy and the Churros were okay, a little over done. The reviewers aren't lying when they say overpriced small portions, but honestly, I wouldn't mind that if the food was at least good. But now we got overpriced small portion flavorless eats. Multiple items in our order came out incorrect as there was no protein on one of our salads and no flour tortillas for the skirt steak, only corn. It took the kitchen a full 10 minutes to send out flavorless chicken (mind you, this is a Mexican restaurant in Houston where the standard for taste is high) at which point we were largely finished with the salad. The server should have comp'd the $12 chicken but instead suggested more salad dressing for the plate full of chicken as if he knew it was flavorless. To complete the experience, one of their busboys spilled a dish of sauce on two in my party as he was clearing the table and it took over 20 minutes to deliver a single order of prepared tres leches. The service was extremely slow....we had to hunt down our waiter multiple times to order drinks and food. The octopus was cooked perfectly though and had a delicious sauce. The meal left a lot to be desired especially given how expensive the entrees were. The appetizers were the most flavorful - the queso had us scraping the bowl and the corn tortilla chips were salted perfectly and had a great crunch. The octopus appetizer was so tasty and cooked tender. However the fish which was $65 for two pieces of fillet was so bland I had to ask for salt and pepper despite them both being covered in sauce. Ceviche was fresh and tasty but for $26 the portion size was only enough for 5 bites! We also got cocktails which again at $18 felt like a rip off. This review is for the new updated restaurant "Flora." I just don't understand why the owner would replace Kitchen at Dunlavy with this when the food was so much better back then. My friend and I was heavily disappointed with the quality of the food for the price. Our tab ended up $100+ plus tip and we left completely starving. The only star i'd give is for the amazing service provided by our waiter. However, the salad was lacking with so much flavor. It felt like they just grabbed it out of the bag and tossed it in the plate. For the tacos, even the $1 street tacos are so much tastier than this; they're practically the same size! The cocktail was okay. Overall, I wouldn't recommend anyone to come try the new restaurant. Also, parking is such a pain here with the small lot. Flora is a beautiful restaurant, located in a glass treehouse, that has a breathtaking view of the park along Allen Parkway. In addition, it has more than 40 chandeliers in the interior which adds to the ambiance. So make sure you come looking good and feeling good! They have valet parking and a small lot where you can self park. They have a menu that is made of newly interpreted dishes from Mexico with a hint of Texas. Our waitress was amazing and gave us great recommendations. She was very attentive throughout our time there. We had the shrimp tacos and the Barbacoa De Borrego (braised lamb). Formerly known as The Dunvaly, now Flora. The previous restaurant had awful food and going into Flora I thought they would have much better food for the price that they have. I can't say the food is bad because it's not. However, finding similar dishes for a lower price would be easy. Nothing really stood out to me except for the breathtaking views. The food is made by hand and they definitely did try to make the food as authentic as possible. They offer a variety of well known Mexican dishes like Tostadas, enchiladas, and Mole. The type of people they're tending to aren't for true Mexican food enthusiasts. It's Americanized to say the least. Even their hot sauce wasn't too spicy. We started with Flora margaritas, which were delicious. Not too sweet. My friend got the margarita with mezcal in it, which was also delicious. Very smoky flavor, we commented it was a manly drink! For appetizers we had queso and guacamole. The best guacamole I have ever had, and it can be customized to your heat preference. The shrimp tacos were flavorful and delicious. The lentil salad bowl was refreshing and tasty, and the green enchiladas were wonderful. We did not get dessert but our server thoughtfully brought us mini margaritas for my friend's birthday.
