Some key takeaways - the portions are "reasonable" and the food is high quality and pretty darn delicious. Flower Child seems to be a chain, under the same restaurant management group as North Italia a few streets away. I would not have guessed that because it feels a bit more local . . . if that makes sense at all. Like sort of like Local Foods-esque? So you walk into the restaurant and you're sort of bombarded by a bunch of different options, some of them Pei Wei style - wherein you pick the protein and then whether you want it as a Salad, Plate, or Bowl, with several options of each. There's also some starters, wraps, and beer and wine. Vegetarian, vegan, and/or gluten-free selections are indicated, which is pretty great for those of us with dietary restrictions. I've had the Thai Cashew Quinoa with Organic Non-GMO with Tofu was pretty flippin' delicious. I was sort of half expecting a somewhat bland unseasoned bowl of vegetable components because well, let's just say this sort of thing happens to me on the regular. However, it was actually quite tasty. I was left almost wishing the serving size was a taaaddd larger because I'm a gluttonous fatty and accustomed to stupid big American portions. The husband felt similarly about his Grass-Fed Steak Plate. He stressed that it was "really good," although not "medium" like the cashier informed him it would be. And he wished there had been more of it. I also tried the Vegan Ramen on separate occasion and while it was quite a beautiful and vibrant bowl of ramen - it was a tad on the salty side. It wasn't totally inedible, but it's not something I would ever order again. The restaurant itself has pretty terrible acoustics - not something that usually concerns me. I had a late meeting in the area so I was looking for dinner and decided to try out Flower Child. Located in Uptown, it's a great part of town. Lots and lots of good restaurants like Etoile, Songkran, Uptown Sushi, and bars like The Rustic and Belvedere. While there is some valet, there's plenty of self parking too. I got some takeout for dinner and ate it in my car. Flower Child is a healthy spot. You'll find a lot of veggies, salads, vegan options, gluten free . . . you know the drill. The ambiance is casual yet sophisticated. I went with the grilled chicken which comes with two sides. For my sides, I got the yukon smashed potatoes and the gluten-free mac & cheese. The star of the meal were the smashed potatoes. I originally thought they would be potatoes that were smashed a bit but they were in fact mashed potatoes. There was a generous portion and they were some of the best mashed potatoes I've had. The mac & cheese was about average but solid for a healthy option. It's not the mac & cheese you'll find at a soul food restaurant but also a lot lower on the calorie count. I was a little disappointed with the grilled chicken. It's sliced grilled chicken like you would put on a salad. For an entree where the protein is the star of the meal, I was expecting something a little more substantial. I'd give Flower Child 3.5 stars if I could: they do some things well and other things not so much. read more

Visiting Houston for a work trip and like the fact that my co worker knowing I am vegetarian try and find fun restaurants to visit - Flower Child being the pick today. Really cool space - bright and airy with great decor and lots of seating. It's a place where you order then chose a table. With that said the staff were not particularly warm and friendly. No greeting when we walked in - we just assumed we helped ourself and chose a table - so some level of warmer customer service would be nice. That said food was amazing and so maybe yummy and creative choices it was hard to decide. Went with the Tabbouli bowl and it was delicious - also tried some of the forbidden rice dish and it was equally as good. It's a little pricey, but worth the experience and the taste! Salads, plates (pick 1, 2, or 3 sides + add protein if you wish), grain bowls, wraps, toasts, juices, and beverages span the menu, and there are sweet goodies like cookies or olive oil lemon cupcakes to end on a sweet note. A plate of 3 sides without protein was $9, but well worth it! Adding steak, chicken, or salmon can range from $5-9 extra, and tofu is $4. The yuzu Brussels sprouts had a nice citrus flavor, Japanese eggplant was bursting with basil notes, and chili sweet potatoes were just barely spicy with lots of sweet-- all three were addicting! Our food came out relatively quickly from the open kitchen, and it was both fresh and colorful~ There is almost always a line out the door during peak times, but it moves quickly, and the super nice servers are usually able to find you a table once you order at the counter. They bring the food to you, and there's a self-serve area for utensils, napkins, and water. Indoor decor is super cute, and there is plenty of natural lighting :) there is outdoor seating for good days too! The parking lot is enormous, and there is even a basket to hold your yoga mat while you dine (not kidding) :P If you need a great way to get those veggies in, you've found your spot. I can't believe I just found out about this place! I have decided this is my new favorite for healthy foods! The interior is super cute! Very feminine with some French garden feel. You order your food when you first enter and then they deliver it to your table. Very similar to local foods but with more for people that want to customize.
