So, I am in Cleveland for just 2 weeks, and needed a coffee shop where I can sit and read my book while sipping on some coffee or munching on some pastries. So, while walking to Starbucks, I bumped into Fluffy Duck Coffee Shop, and I thought I should give it a try. Although I witnessed poor customer service (Older guy behind the counter being rude to customers), and despite the coffee shop not having wifi, I fell in love with the atmosphere (Less people, less noisy). For about a week, I would go to this coffee shop from 8 am to 12 pm, buy coffee and chocolate croissant and read my book. At 11:30 am, I would buy Rustic Turkey, a sandwich which is really good! I spent about $25 each day. Problem: Today, I was told that I was no longer welcome to sit for more than an hour in the coffee shop. I was told this in a very rude tone as if I was a "free loader". Maybe I was! Lol. But in my mind, there was no traffic in the shop and I was spending money too! Ohh, more background too: This older gentlement, in one of my conversations with him on the first day, told me that the coffee shop was going out of business. He said that due to the effects of Covid-19, they have been experiencing less traffic. He also said that they are having problems with the landlord. Now that I think about this, Covid-19 or their landlord aren't the problem! Here me out: - Fluffy Duck is at the heart of the medical school, the hospital, and a dental school among others. It's the only coffee shop within a 1.5 mile radius where a student can sit, sip coffee and complete an assignment. The owners have failed to take advantage of this location. I love croissants and find them in every city and corner of the world. And the croissants and Kouign-amann at Fluffy Duck are spectacular. I would even venture to say that they are some of the best Viennoiserie in the United States. Having been trained at one of the premier culinary and baking arts institutions in the world, the owner makes all of the baked goods with considerable care and perfection. Stop in here. You will not be disappointed in these flaky and buttery yummies. Of note, the staff is awkward and not very friendly, so don't plan to go for the customer service. I've been coming here for a while now and let me say pre COVID this place was always packed and I would even bring my laptop in to do some work and wasn't ever met with any resistance. As of late, whenever I go in and get just a latte (which is actually really good) the owner will always ask "no food?" And make you feel like you're doing something wrong for not ordering food. Its made me so uncomfortable I sadly do not go there anymore and it's a shame because although over priced the coffee is actually really good and the space is very pleasant to do work in. This place has been on my list for a while since it had great yelp reviews, but boy was i disappointed. I'll talk about the good first - the place is very well lit and spacious with several outlets. The coffee was decent. Now the complaints i have - the coffee was EXTREMELY overpriced. I got the latte and it was $5 for 12oz, with just way too much ice packed in it (just look at the amount of ice in the photo). it also seems like there was just a single shot in it. Absolutely ridiculous this price, this amount, this caffeine content - even some NYC cafes are cheaper than that. The milk doesn't taste high quality either. Overall seems like it should just be a $3 regular cup of latte. - the SERVICE was Absolutely. Terrible. TERRIBLE. The guy at the counter looked like he just doesn't wanna be there. He seemed annoyed initially because I didn't want to get the pastries/sandwiches. His tone made it almost sound like I've committed a crime by only getting the coffee. I saw online that there's free wifi, which is why I brought my work to spend a few productive hours in the morning there. While their pastries and breads are still the best in Cleveland, the operation has gotten so inconsistent that it's not worth going anymore. Hours are never accurate on their website, google, or yelp. If you do manage to catch them when they're open, they likely won't have anything you were looking for. I get that they're a small business, but it's not like they have a huge selection with one or two things sold out, how hard is it not constantly be out of croissants? Or bread if any kind? All before 10am? Really unfortunate, but unless you want to call them before you ever go there to confirm their hours and whether or not they have anything to sell (not that they'll hold anything if you do call- so it's still a gamble whether or not they'll have anything by the time you do get there) you're better off going somewhere else. read more

THIS BAKERY. It's iconic. It's amazing. It's delicious. Today I got a sausage egg and cheese on the softest, most pillowy brioche. I wish I remembered to take a pic but I inhaled it. The dough was so tender, and it would bounce back after your press it down in the most gorgeous supple manner. The sausage was also very high quality! Could it be homemade? Very good flavor that paired well with the brioche seasonings on top (fennel? poppy seeds? etc.) It was a tad bit pricy at $6.50 but let's be real it was absolutely worth it. Between the soft brioche, and the amazing sausage, it's a pleasure. TREAT YO SELF. I've also had their almond croissant, it's soft and buttery and not overly sweet. Amazing almond flavor. I love this place... the look of it... the environment... the location... the food... to me it's all perfect! I don't know how they have successfully created an oasis of calm in the middle of chaos(CCF is right around the corner, there's ongoing construction,kinder care is one door away). Regardless, this space definitely has serene charm about it. I love the fact that they don't have a ginormous menu with everything in the kitchen sink on it! The menu is selective and varies with products available. A bonus... they make their own breads! I tried the ham baguette sandwich off the lunch menu and while the bread was a little tough for my liking, the bite of the sandwich on its whole was perfect! The dressing(don't know what it was but it was delicious),ham and the bread all came together just perfectly!! They don't do soups in summer. Will definitely be back to sample more of their offerings! A true gem of an addition to this area! read more

Bread is my Kryptonite, so this is my Krypton. Amazing bread in well prepared, very authentic, tasty sandwiches, croissants, Kouign Ammann, Danish, and pizza. The sandwich had exquisite bread, off-the/bone turkey, thinly shaved and excellent cheese, with beautiful local hydroponic greens. Everything is beautifully prepared. The staff is friendly, and the decor is simple but comfortable. I will have to side with the clean freaks though. A few passes on the crumbs and dirty dishes are in order on the front of the house. This review is solely based on the customer service. My dad is a patient at the Cleveland clinic & I've come to this place twice now for coffee (would rather support small than a big chain). The coffee is really nice & I haven't tried the pastries but I'm sure they're great. I'm hoping they see this: please be more friendly to your customers. Many of them I'm sure are medical staff, people that are keeping other people alive. Many of your customers have family staying at the hospital, and are going through really tough times, which is my case. A little kindness goes a long way, to the older man, please be kinder to your customers. I will not be coming back because I do not want to interact with this man again. read more

Charmed, I'm sure you'll be. Fluffy Duck is almost as adorable as its name, and located on the ground floor of the Innova residential building. Walking inside was a little like stepping into a meditation room filled with pastries. Peaceful, clean, white walls and counters, wooden furniture, and of course, the smell of fresh bread. As I perused the menu and baked goods (kouign amanns!!), I could see the open kitchen space just beyond, where staff were busy rolling out dough and prepping other sorts of tempting things. The tea is served in afternoon tea worthy china - it practically begs to be photographed. The teapot for some reason though kept sticking to the countertop when I tried to pick it up. I'm not sure if this was a poor-design thing, sticky surfaces, or just an artifact of tea drip. Some of the food items were a little on the pricier side, but my Turkey Sandwich did have avocado and was layered with absolutely delicious bread. The Ham Sub Sandwich and pizza options were more economical and I'm sure scrumptious as well. As previously mentioned, free Wi-Fi is available. You'll find some charging outlets near the window seats, but if you're just there to enjoy a nice lunch or conversation, the tables will do very nicely. Two any-gender bathrooms along the far side. It was very quiet when I went, with only a few people coming in and out during the lunch hour, which made it a great place to study. I'm conflicted since I'd rather not have to compete for prime laptop space as it becomes busier. But, I do hope Fluffy Duck starts getting the attention it deserves to keep swimming along! read more

The food is great, probably mostly due to the excellent bread (I order a sandwich) and the coffee is superb. A must for my long day. The owner provides excellent service without being too invasive. Fluffy duck is a wonderful spot right below innova apartments, but even if it weren't below my complex, I'd still make time to visit. Such quality and authentic pastries (all croissants are pretty great) and you can just tell they always use fresh ingredients for all their dishes. The rustic turkey isn't anything complicated but is always a great mid size lunch, and although the Cleveland crisp isn't your classic salad (more crunchy vegetables than leafy) it has great seasoning. This little, unassuming cafe living under an apartment complex will surprise you. The Fluffy Duck is an excellent place to stop for a quick, leisurely bite, and their sandwich game is on point! The locals lucked out with this one. I ordered (what I thought would be) the simplest item on the menu - a turkey sandwich. It was called the Rustic Turkey. It had to have been one of the best turkey sandwiches I've ever had. Buttery avocado, paper-thin lettuce, juicy red tomatoes, slice after slice of cold cut turkey, and an herby alioli spread brought it all together. The artisan, oaty bread was so undeniably fresh! Meanwhile, there were only two guys working their magic behind the counter and hacking away at dough or other ingredients. Whenever a customer approached the register, they'd casually put down whatever they were doing so they could help take their order or hand them a pastry. Something about that was super chill and added a coolness factor to this local a la carte cafe. Whether you're eating onsite or to go, you're in for a superb sandwich! I was able to go to Fluffy Duck Cafe for the first time this week and I was pleased. The space is open and airy, with a nice view into the kitchen to watch the baked goods be prepared. The staff were helpful and would also talk about how they prepare their food! I had a salad, almond milk latte, and an everything croissant (I couldn't leave without trying something from the bakery!). Everything was very tasty and plated nicely. I hate leaving somewhat negative reviews, but this place provided the worst customer service. I called on the phone to order 3 pizzas. The guy who answered was quite rude and acted like I was completely bothering him. He never asked for my name or anything. When I went to pick the pizzas up, there was literally no one there. A young guy and girl were working on making something and chatting. They acted as though they couldn't see me and just went on with their conversation. An older man acknowledged me, but raised his hands go show they were dirty. He kept looking at the other two as if they were going to come help me. After he realized they weren't, he cleaned his hands and came over. He then said my pizzas weren't ready and it would be 3 more minutes as they were in the oven after looking all over the place. The young guy then yells I have them. He slowly stops his conversation with the girl and comes over. He hands them to me. Doesn't ask if I need napkins, etc. and then turns their iPad towards me to pay. And walks away back to the girl. I then had to shout hat I needed a receipt. I went here after a doctors appointment at Cleveland clinic for a late morning coffee and pastry. It was super nice and bright inside. The entire back kitchen was open so you can see the two men rolling out doughs. One immediately stopped working to come talk to me. I ordered a ham and cheese croissant and a pour over coffee. However, he suggested I try there current batches of coffee. The one out was an Ethiopian coffee with hints of strawberry and cocoa. He said he personally thinks it's better than the Colombian pour over, and it is cheaper! He went on to tell me about a book he just read on coffee beans. He was so passionate about it! I loved listening to him. It wasn't too busy, there was lots of seating, there was a cute duck wall by the bathrooms, and my croissant and coffee were beyond amazing.
