Loved this place when I lived in Memphis - but I visited this location recently and was really disappointed. My meal was terrible and not enjoyable whatsoever. I had my go to catfish filet plate, and it tasted completely burnt, and like it had been frozen & reheated, not fresh at all. The red beans and rice I used to love were almost inedible. The only semi-redeeming part of the meal was the hush puppies. I really hope my visit was an anomaly, because I need flying fish in Dallas! I'll try visiting another location and see if it's any better. read more

If you notice I often leave 5 stars for places I really like. I start out with 5 and knock down when I perceive an issue is persistent and warrants it. In other words if the person behind the counter has a bad day and doesn't get me taken care of in 30.6 seconds, I won't knock them down to one star like some of the reviews I see on yelp. With that said, Flying Fish is a great place for Catfish in the local area. Very nice, light and non-greasy fish that doesn't taste like you kissed the bottom of White Rock lake is always preferred! Shrimp is nicely cooked, and battered as well. Nothing pretentious about their batter- It is cornmeal based,very simple and tasty. The fries are also the smooth thick chip kind that is fried to perfection. Fresh lemons and ice tea is very good. Tarter Sauce is good as well as the cocktail sauce, although I like it with extra hot horseradish. Not sure about anything else on the menu since I come here for the catfish! read more

I've been here before but not this location. I wasn't really that hungry but wanted something. I picked the catfish tacos and wasn't sorry! The staff is EXTREMELY friendly and helpful and the place is really clean. Don't be fooled by the strip mall exterior, it's a great place for country fish camp cooking and southern charm. read more

Sundays are now the only time I'll go to Flying Fish. The oysters are now a random $.29 each (which comes out to half their regular price for a dozen) and domestic longnecks are $1.50. I have been here several times. It had become a staple of my Sundays. Usually I am greeted by a young hispanic woman that is really quite nice. My last visit was the opposite. I was greeted by a different young hispanic woman that was very snappy in her behavior. I tried to return the beer that I bought as it was VERY flat. I explained the issue to the woman and told her that I would like to trade for a fountain drink instead. She told me that the soft drink would cost more and that I would have to pay the difference. Now I realize that we are trading items here, but you are more profitable if I drink the fountain drink... so why hassle either of us with correcting the charges? And where throughout this process was the apology for the crap beer you served!!! I told her she could just refund me the cost of the beer as I would have a water. One week later... still no refund. I'm fine with less than perfect service. I can handle a flat beer. I can't stand that I was treated poorly AND that I didn't get my refund. SO here's the deal Flying Fish: Stretch the money for that one beer far. Invest. That will be the last dollar you see from me until I see a refund and an apology. PS - get the other girl back! Stopped in for breakfast and coffee. Food came out in two or three minutes. Four self serve coffee pots set at the counter, refills permitted. I had the avocado and egg (over hard) sandwich with a side of grits. White bread was perfectly toasted, still soft with a crispy exterior. Grits were thin but were packed with savory buttery goodness. Table is adorned with hot sauces galore. Clientele mostly business men during the week. I've gone here 2 times. The first time was excellent with fast service and good food. The second time I order to go, and wait over 30 minutes and it was not that crowded. I finally see someone else get their food before me and I asked about the wait. Turns out my food was just sitting there for who knows long and getting cold. The only apology that I got was "my bad". The only thing I liked better about living in East Texas than living in Dallas was the abundance of quality seafood due to its proximity to Louisiana. Since moving to Dallas, I've struggled to find good quality gumbo. I've found the Flying Fish to have the best gumbo in Dallas. read more

I love the Flying Fish!! We order off the food apps often and it is always tasty fresh and correct! Their fish is great and always crispy and other favorites include the catfish poboy and crab legs. Maybe I had fried catfish on a bad day, but they were the skinniest fillets I've ever seen. Maybe 1/4 in. thick. Likes - very laid back atmosphere, especially in Preston Center neighborhood - great vibe and friendly staff; Dislikes - I ordered the fried shrimp with hush puppies and they were just void of any flavor. This may not be their speciality, so I'm willing to try this place again and order differently. I have to say the prices are very reasonable. Been eating here since they opened in 2004-2005, ate here tonight.....food quality & service has consistently gone down as I witnessed tonight. Catfish was semi-warn & a little old tasting. Soggy, burnt veggies, shriveled up shrimp, super dry, flavorless. But on the positive side...the rice and beans were amazing! Cool environment but super crowded and no place to sit.
