I used to love this place - their dosas and Idlis are really good but of late they've been under staffed and haven't been able to keep up with the demand. I visit often and the number of times I've had cold food served to me is surprising! It's a family owned restaurant and they're in the process of opening (or have already opened) an outlet in downtown. They've moved their staff around and the new people in the Richmond location aren't as efficient as the previous staff - this causes wrong/late orders and that's why I've stopped going there as often as I used to. The idlis are so yummy and it stands true to the name of "flying idlis" I personally am a big fan of chutneys and tomato chutney had the perfect blend of tanginess and spice. I would definitely recommend trying out the Bullet idli, Magic idli and the fiery idli. Me and my wife used to be a regular customer of Flying Idlis when they operated from home. They opened their restaurant three days back. Happy to say they expanded their amazing menu even more yet the taste of their food remains unique, authentic and delicious. We ordered Magic Idli, Fiery Dosa and Upma. Traditional and very flavorful Indian food is always my favorite. I ordered one of the most popular idlis plate, with two side dip sauces. The flavor was 100% authentic with the host's own amazing twist in it. I finished one dip and he offered me another refill! He even made a very funny comment in dipping instructions sound like "kuchi!!" The service was wonderful! We met the owner, Krish, who is working hard to keep his menu quality at this consistent high level. His dream is coming true. The place was packed. Simple Dosa and Idli menu, with traditional mango lassi and madras coffee and chai also available. We ordered the Yummy Dosa and Yummy Idli which is essentially plain dosa and Idli. Amazing food - really authentic, & great value for the price! I got the plain Pesaratu - it was exactly like Ammamma makes it! I asked for the Gunpowder - they gave it to me in a little container with ghee - EXCELLENT taste - again, just like Ammamma makes her podi. The Magic idlis were soft & yummy. The in-laws were in town and were craving a Indian breakfast. This was the first place my wife could find that was open before 10am so we gave it a shot. I have to be honest I wasn't thrilled when we pulled up and it was in a dingy shopping center. Not judging a book by its cover paid off. This is a small dinner with less than 20 tables and soon after we arrived it was full of customers. We started with stuffed idles for the table and they were fantastic. They were mildly sweet and came with two different sauces. Come to find out, everything we ordered came with these two sauces. One of which was a peanut type sauce and the other lentil type sauce; both were delicious. We then ordered a couple dosas. I ordered the healthy dosa which is now my new all-time favorite dosa. You could really taste all the flavors described on the menu and could definitely tell it was made with oats. A few notes/pointers on this place. When ordering dosa make sure that you order some filling or you will just get the plain dosa with dipping sauce. Also, if your looking to impress someone with ambiance this is not the place to go. Lemme kick start my reviews of Houston with this place. We came here for brunch and ordered the Andhra thali, floating idli and magic idli. The Idlis are really good, floating idli especially had a homely taste. The sambhar is really good. The peanut chutney and tomato chutney were not that great, for some reason they didn't have the coconut chutney today. Andhra thali has everything in very small portions, and they say it's unlimited but just because I tasted a bit from my husband's plate, they refused to give us second portion and said it'll be charged extra. That was the puzzling part of the whole brunch experience. I would rate this place 4 for the food, but 3 for the customer service. She also got a mango lassi but it didn't taste good and after some time, the liquids in the drink separated so we told the lady and she gave us a mango juice instead. The spicy dosa is pretty spicy. Highlights: Magic Idlis are very good, and all prices are super reasonable for meal on a budget. Great place for vegetarian/vegans. Watchouts: servings of sambar are tiny, place is pretty small so when they get busy, it gets stuffy and service is.not the best. The masala dosas had very little stuffing, but were cooked well. We also found that at table of 7 of us, at least one order of our idli orders was undercooked in a rush.
