This local Albuquerque chain has a great bakery and a big menu. They are a great place for breakfast, but also serve lunch/dinner as well. You order at the counter and then display your number and someone will bring your food to your table. The location we went to was art themed, with lots of paintings on the wall, a ceiling painted with clouds, and mosaic columns. There is a wonderful shady patio filled with greenery. I originally wanted the Green Chili Caldo, but was told that they had run out. That's fair, as we arrived 45 minutes before closing. I ended up choosing the grilled cheese with green chili added and sweet potato fries. It was good. Son ordered the Elite Burger--hamburger patty with street corn and crema wrapped in a grilled tortilla. That was excellent. It was served with fries. Both the regular and sweet potato fries were duds for me. Freshly cut, but barely warm and just did not have that crispy fried taste. Hubby had the Green Chili Cheeseburger with onion rings. If I could give a negative star I would. We ate breakfast here yesterday and it took us 30 minutes to get our breakfast. They were not busy, many tables were empty, and it took us having to go to the counter, asking where our food was. A person walking by said oh there it is, just sitting there. She walked out to our table and assured us everything was hot. None of it was! My husband got wrong bread, potatoes were not good, and the portions were very skimpy. Needless to say, we are not going to return. We have heard the same negative comments from people we know and now we have experienced it ourselves. Had a delicious breakfast. Decided on the huevos rancheros...eggs cooked perfectly, green chili delicious; you get your choice of corn or flower tortilla. They know how to make beans and the potatoes were definitely homemade. My friend got the avocado toast. I got the Rise and Shine breakfast sandwich on an english muffin with eggs over hard with bacon. It was good but nothing really stood out to make it special. The home fries were really delicious! There was a side of salsa, I think, that didn't have much flavor or bite. The peach tea is brewed which I loved. The employees are really friendly and efficient. I previously gave a 2 star due to the decline in food quality. In response, the company replied to that review asking me to reach out to them to see if they could improve that. I emailed them and got zero response to my email. It's far worse customer service to ask a customer to do something that you say you'll act upon and then ignore them. Sitting out in the outdoor patio, we enjoyed the shade, the ambience, the birds chirping, and a very even keel environment. The food was awesome, and the staff are super friendly. by the way, when I say, the food was awesome, I truly mean, "the food was friggin awesome"! I used to love their machine for making fresh squeezed orange...not only is it gone, but nobody working there remembers ever having one. I do! Shame on you. The quantity and complexity of cakes is not what it used to be. They've gone from a work of art to a chain-standardized race to cost cutting. We ordered to-go the "Fabulous French Toast" this evening for 2 and both orders just have burnt brioche with no custard, a butter sugar sauce hardly "caramelized". Our kids each got the chicken and fries just to get dry chicken with forgotten Ranch. At just shy of $100, you hope you're splurging for the evening with your family and end up just disappointed. Flying Star has lost its high standards. We used to frequent the Nob Hill location back when Flying Star only had 2 or 3 stores. They used to be where you'd go to impress your date, celebrate special occasions, or just satisfy a sweet tooth with world class desserts that boasted of the best ingredients put together in the most elegant ways and surrounded by some the most ambient and unique dining space. This place is an ABQ mainstay and I'm a bit ashamed to admit I haven't been here in what feels like forever. We're still doing takeout out given the whole crazy pandemic situation and figured we'd try something we haven't had in a while. Bonus that each of us could get something we wanted! Hubby doesn't do well with New Mexican, spicy, etc. so if I can get it and he can get something else he prefers then it's a double win. I got the breakfast burrito with Christmas and he tried one of the specials (coconut red chicken curry) and we shared a key lime pie slice. His curry was good and something different. It was simple but still good. My burrito was delicious - both the red and green chile sauce was extremely flavorful with a good kick on the red. Both entrees were a good sized lunch the next day too which was great! While the key lime was good, I would have preferred a bit more of a citrus bite to it. The whipped cream on it was good but overpowered the lime flavor that I hope for in a key lime pie. It was good but it definitely wasn't a $7+ slice. Overall, the food was solid although a little expensive for what it was. A good local favorite that's closeby and will likely be added to the rotation. read more

I really enjoy the atmosphere of flying star but I've always thought their prices are too high for the quality of food they sell. I came on a Wednesday for dinner and got the Buddha Bowl and my daughter got the Mac and cheese. It was $15 for my meal and about $7 for her meal. That's two much to spend for a regular size meal and a small portion of not anything special Mac and cheese. In the future I will keep this as a place I come to for desserts and coffee. read more

I stopped in here with some family for breakfast and really wasn't sure what to expect. They had all sorts of options which sometimes is a bad sign to me because how good can you really be at making so many items, thankfully I was proven wrong and found everything to be very lovely. I had a London Fog which was fine but the star of the show for me was a breakfast risotto dish. I could eat that thing every day for the rest of my life and not grow tired of it. It was perfectly balanced in flavors and textures and so lovely! If meeting up with friends, it would be best to get there a little early to claim a table, since you order at the bar first then go sit down. But they were great at quickly bussing tables and I really enjoyed this experience. This will definitely be a repeat for future visits. read more

TBH, F.S. food at this restaurants is among the City's most impressively mediocre. And yet somehow, an over-cooked-to-hell burger and drink costs $20+guilt-trip-tip. WTH! And I love places like these, in any part of the world. I use nearly every FS in Town. But I come here to work, because they allow you to set up like an office and work open-to-close. It's dope. HOWEVER ... And these first two are really a small criticism, overall, but ... One: Aside from the gardens, WHICH ARE AMAZING, the interior decor is just ridiculous. It's like they tried to maintain this "space" theme but it, whoever is responsible didn't get the message because they all looks like mid-nineties Denny's. It's almost impressingly bad. Like you can imagine a famous French TV interior designer meeting the corporate overlords who developed this huge City-Wide chain and slapping each one with his gloves, "Mais-non. C'est mal, c'est TRES, Monsieur!" Two: Holy Christ, on a cracker! Who is responsible for your music selection??? We still haven't been force-feed the World's Premiere 3-Chord band, Cold Play, enough in life, already?!? For the love of God, consult with a proper DJ with a degree in the arts. But last, is perhaps the most important, and that's the WiFi connection (AT EVERY LOCATION) but it is the most appallingly unreliable WiFi. It's practically a crap·shot whether you'll get a fully uninterrupted day. And there are days that are the exact opposite where you're lucky to get any WiFi at all. --------------- Somewhere along your corporate "food-chain," (see what I did right there?) there's more than a few people dropping multiple balls. I like these owners but I think they need some help. And they should perhaps be pay the staff better, rather than passing that on to the customer who is already overpaying, then making the customer feel guilty AF in front of a bunch of people he/she knows isn't going to be served by? folks, there is no other way to put it other than this place has turned into a rip off. the prices are way overpriced. i ordered their cheaper burger with sweet potato fries and the total price checked out at 17.22. thats coming close to 20 bucks. the burger appeared preformed and was well done / dry. i believe they may be using precooked patties as I was never asked how well done on the burger. the one dollar upcharge for sweet potato fries was not worth it, the portion size is very small. i sat down and never was asked for more water, etc. in the end i am confused if a tip is being asked for what is essentially self service. read more

This place is still on a downhill slope. The food consistently disappoints. The Avocado toast today: toast burned, eggs almost cold - and the place was only half full. The guys in the kitchen seem to be busy filling takeout orders but neglect the in house orders. How about some heat lamps? At least two of the food runners took extended breaks at the same time (sitting at their laptops and eating). It seems no manager was present for quality control and to keep the staff working. The Flying Star is my go-to restaurant when visiting Burque. The menu features great locally produced food and is reliably tasty and well made. There's always a tempting selection of bakery items in the display case up front. My favorite location is on Central but the food and service here on Juan Tabo is pretty good as well. My work colleagues enjoyed their selections especially the Crave salad and the green Chile cheeseburger. Recommended. read more

We went in for dinner on a Sunday evening. It was busy, but not crazy. Food took a minute to be served, but we are patient so that was no issue. My main issue was that most of the food was TRASH..... The chicken tenders were the SMALLEST slivers of chicken I've ever seen. Because they were so incredibly small, the cook also wayyyyy overcooked them. They were chewy, stringy, and reminded me more of biting the back of a leather saddle than a chicken tender. I wanted to send them back they were that bad, but the other half didn't want to cause a scene or make a big deal so she just ate the thin little chicken Jerky strips they call chicken tenders..... The small mac we got as a side was also just that, SMALL! and lukewarm at very best! For almost $8, you'd think they could give you a decent serving, or at least serve it hot!..... I ordered the Fish Sandwich for myself and that was at least good. Not that big either, but I'd say it was adequate compared to anything else. Almost impossible to eat without wearing it, but it was good none the less. The sweet potato fries were complete opposite of the tenders and were very under done. For this atrocious almost $50 meal I could have went somewhere else and got tons of food, that would have likely also been cooked much better. Their portions suck, their cooking of the food sucks, and their price is ridiculous. I remember other locations having better food at least, so I may try to go to another location but I'll never get food at this location again! read more

This is one of many times that I've gone to Flying Star and this time it was for brunch. I and my companion both opted for the avocado toast however, I don't like my eggs runny so I had mine scrambled while she had hers over easy. She said it was one of the best avocado toasts she's ever had. I thought mine was rather mediocre. There wasn't much to it and honestly it didn't have that much avocado on it. I will not be ordering that particular item again. On a brighter note, I tried the triple ginger cookie, had some red stuff and also a Mexican latte, my favorite. All of those were awesome as usual. While the service folks were very nice they first forgot our baked items. We ended up asking for them later in the meal and got them immediately. As I said they were delicious. The servers were super nice and very accommodating and helpful. I've always thought flying star was a bit over priced however, when you get something good, haps you don't feel as badly about the prices. I have to say though that this is why I do not choose to eat here often. With all that said, they have a great patio, decent service and good food, depending upon what you get. I do recommend that you give them a try as many restaurants are still trying to get their feet under them due to the pandemic. We all need to be a little kinder, calmer and more understanding. I ordered the Buddha Bowl with veggies and my husband ordered a BLT and fries. they both arrived in a timely fashion. The meal looked ok at first glance but on further inspection, I noticed the broccoli had a substantial and quite visible amount of mold on the cut ends. I thought maybe it was char marks? It could not have been; the broccoli had been steamed. So I asked a server and she said the broccoli came from a bag. I told her that was even worse- if there is mold on some of the broccoli in the bag- there is mold all over it. Lazy AF prep cooks! They at least refunded my meal. His BLT looked good.
