We don't eat pork, but they literally only had steak as an option for us or we can order from the menu, ( the chicken was being served with the pork) which was not the point of coming here to eat. It seems to be that if you've been to one Brazilian steakhouse you've been to them all. And the more you've been to the less you continue to be impressed by the lavish gimmick of all-you-can-eat steak. Such is the case with Fogo de Chao. As with every Brazilian steakhouse I've ever been to everything was pretty good, which makes it perfectly average among its peers. The question here becomes, specifically and generally, whether a visit to a Brazilian steakhouse is worth the steep price tag it comes with. I've come to believe the answer is "probably not." I think anyone with the extra money to blow should try it once, because the gimmick is certainly a cool one, and the food doesn't suck. But it's still a gimmick: All-you-can-eat steak and sides, with a buffet of good-quality first-course appetizers? That's nice, but here are some downsides: * You'd easily get a better meal for the same money at a moderately nice steakhouse, and still leave fat and happy. * The first-course buffet items are of good quality, but your impulse will to be to eat as little of this as possible to save room in your stomach for limitless steak and other meat. You will invariably feel ambivalence or regret about that after the fact. * Unless you have the luxury of never having a second thought about what a meal costs, you will feel compelled to eat until you hurt and then have some more. And if you are the sort lucky enough to have no worries about value? Well, what exactly the heck are you doing at a buffet place instead of a high end steakhouse? Quelle gauche! * Possibly most important - wine is marked up ridiculously, more than at practically any other restaurant you can find. Sure, other places may have more expensive wine, but you expect really good wine, not selections that go for $10-$15 at your local grocery marked up quadruple that price! In my mind, all of this leaves three reasons to choose a Brazilian steakhouse: 1. Because you've never done it before and want to satisfy the curiosity. 2. Because you want to treat some guests in an extravagant-yet-approachable way. 3. Because you're staging an informal competitive eating contest with your bros. And that's pretty much it. As for an actual review of my specific experience at this particular Brazilian steakhouse: With a blindfold on I could not discern this place from any other Brazilian steakhouse. I was craving for Meat Coma Friday, so off we went to a brazillian steakhouse. This is our second time around. I really like their meat varieties. We had 5 Caipiranha's... Figured we should celebrate. Sweet, tangy, limey drink our favorite next to Margarita. We came for Meat Coma so we did not spend time in the salad bar. My favorite is the Sirloin cut tender, flavorful, beefy flavor that just screams beef and hubby the chicken with Parmesan, I know how simple! He likes how lean and cheesy it is. Our server was attentive but not intrusive, they keep replenishing our cheese bread and caramelized banana, which was neat so it stays warm and fresh. This is my new favorite steakhouse. Everything I'd heard was 100% true and then some! The service is attentive as there are no designated waiters, everyone truly takes care of you. The main attraction is the traffic-light inspired buffet of meats that come to you. You hardly need your knife because the meat is so juicy and tender. The salad bar was superb, although I tried to save room for meats and dessert (and I'm so thankful I did)! The managers even double checked that we tried everything we desired, and promptly sent us another cut of tender filet mignon. I've been to Fogo de Chao in San Antonio and Dallas before, so I'm not a stranger to this particular restaurant chain. Both locations have garnered a 5-star rating from me for impeccable service, delicious food and presentation, and ...who am I kidding, appeasing the inner glutton in me. Wanting to dazzle my parents who would be first-timers to Brazilian churrascaria and to Fogo de Chao in general, I brought them to the Austin location believing that they would be just as impressed as I were with my former experience. To my dismay, I later learned that all locations are not created equal. Not telling my parents what to expect and wanting it to be a surprise, I was eagerly waiting for our waiter to inform them. When he found out that it was their first time, he asked me if I wanted to describe the process. Umm... I could, but I felt that it wasn't my job, so I politely asked him to do it. He seemed to not want to and reluctantly recited the menu (as if he's told this story a million times... and I'm sure he has) while looking around the room or staring at the ceiling avoiding eye contact with us the entire time. My parents were still perplexed because he explained everything very fast, so I eventually had to clarify it to them anyway after our waiter left. Unfortunately, this situation put a damper on our excitement coming here and had me questioning myself why I even drove an hour just for this. Anyway, I tried to shrug it off knowing that we would have multiple waiters afterwards. Perhaps, him being the bad apple of the bunch. Well, the service was hit or miss at best. They definitely were not as attentive as the other locations and the Gauchos would walk past our table multiple times despite having our cards flipped up showing green. And, to show how much the servers were paying attention, they brought our side dishes when we were almost completely done with our entire meal. We couldn't even touch it because we were already too full. What a waste. This location also appeared smaller and the salad bar seemed to lack in size as well. At least the food was good. Unfortunately, it was quite a disappointing experience overall. Although the price is quite steep, if you can afford it, it is definitely one of the best meals you can ever have. I wish I could eat here every single day. The food here is out of this world. Servers come up to you with endless meats on skewers, and you can pick anything you want. Everything here is perfectly cooked from the lamb to the filet mignon. There are so many varieties of meat that you can't get tired of them. In addition, the salad bar is so fresh with the perfect appetizers to start off your meat feast. I also really like the bread that they serve because the texture is sooooo soft, and the flavor is perfect. The service here is the best I have ever had in my life. All the servers are so attentive, and they memorize your meat preferences from the way it is cooked to the type of meat. I could blink and my water would be refilled and I wouldn't even see the waiter. If you are ready for heaven, come to Fogo de Chao. I was extremely disappointed in the service at Fogo. My boyfriend and I went to celebrate him finishing school and was ignored by almost ALL the waiters. Out waiters name was Alexandra, and she had horrible service. She gave us the drink menus and never came back to get our order so we were with all night. Then when it was time to pay, we had to wait 45 minutes before Alexandra came back to give us our bill. We had tried to get the attention of multiple staff members INCLUDING the manger who went to every table but ours. I would NEVER recommend this restaurant and I recommend Estancia. read more

We dined here for an informal work meeting recently. Beautiful atmosphere in a downtown location with valet parking right out front. Most members of our party were meat-eaters; I am not, so I stuck to the buffet salad/fruit bar, which was impressive and spans two sides of the table in the center of the restaurant. We were seated at a large round table, and the wait service is informal, with an initial server appearing to explain the process, and other servers continually circulating to deliver meat from skewers (using two-foot long serving knives) and pick up empty dishes. This all comes in handy when you want to focus on conversation and not have to wait for a server for a particular request. You get up and serve yourself from the salad bar, and simply turn over a round card to indicate whether or not you want more meat. They keep serving until you turn it over. Basically, it's a food orgy, American style. And it's expensive. I didn't pick up the tab, but it runs about $50/person without drinks, which seems pretty high for what you get if you have a normal appetite. If you can eat like a linebacker or a teenaged boy, you might feel differently. The meat eaters reported that the meat was "just okay," not marinated or with any particular rubs or seasoning added. It looks like something you'd see at a gyro stand. Those who have had Brazilian fare said the meat here was fairly mediocre by comparison. The salad bar was tasty, however, and the cheese bread rolls are delish. So there are the pros and cons, from my POV. I personally wouldn't make it a destination again on my own, but I'd eat there again with co-workers in a similar situation, where the company is picking up the tab. read more

That's including the discounted $35 ARW price; the star rating might have gotten even lower if I paid full price. I'm obviously in the minority as most folks love Fogo. I'm all over meat; but I found a few flaws in the quality not quantity category, and the worst table you can get in the restaurant. Our party partially arrived and when it came time they seated an incomplete party to get us started so instant win for us. We sat down and ordered drinks and pondered waiting for our three missing guests; that didn't happen. Wait there's Liz! Sorry about your bad luck for the rest of the bunch who never showed; we went for it. Salad bar was decent, I tuned in on the cured meats with a spear of asparagus, sun dried tomato, and assorted cheeses. About halfway thru that plate with my dining guests already indulging in mountains of meat I slid aside the opening act for the main event. All the sirloin, ribeye, and filet cuts were delicious. Losers in the meat category included the beef and pork ribs, way too dry. As others have noted the salt flavor was abundant; but manageable by my standards. Sides were good, delectable crunchy polenta almost resembling hash browns at the golden arches, fried plantains, and mashed potatoes. The cheesy bread didn't wow me as I expected thinking there are better bites of bread in this town. The wife went for the salad bar option with a complimentary dessert for an ARW price of $23. My Caipirinha was flavorful as was Jenny's Nutty Irishman. Ol' Rooster's biggest complaint was the table. Seated directly next to the kitchen entrance, it was like the Indy 500 of meat directly behind us. As the restaurant grew to capacity our dining experience became less than pleasurable. Second complaint would be the price and knowing we got the ARW price left me thinking I'd rather not come back and pay the near $50 charge for the regular dinner. I can justify a Kobe steak that cost a Benjamin if I can finish it and I didn't get that feeling from Fogo. A good showing, but worthy of only three stars in my book. read more

Poor service when my boyfriend and I went for our one year anniversary, and it was really empty. There wasn't a real problem with getting the meats but the waiter was not very engaged and did even ask us why we were here or anything. I think most waiters at these type of interactive restaurants are ya know...interactive? I think maybe I'm a little picky since I've had such great experiences at chauma gaucha, fogos, and really expensive restaurants in general, such as Ruth's Chris or Uchiko. If I'm going to pay for a high end price tag, I expect high end service and especially on a light night. There were maybe 5 other tables filled... But...the meat is tasty, but maybe on the saltier side, and the sides are delicious. Carmelized plantains or whatever ftw!!! And you can never have enough of that cheesy bread!! While this is great to impress, I guess. I would take bae somewhere else, but I get that Fogo has that great reputation. This location is in the heart of downtown Austin and the service is exceptional so you can rest assured your meal will be perfection. You can rent event space here too such as their upstairs room which has stunning views to impress every guest in your party. They recently started doing happy hours Mon-Fri from 4:30-6:30 which in itself is a reason to come celebrate. They have small plates and signature drinks such as their refreshing and delicious Caipirinha (made with silver Cachaca, fresh limes or strawberries, and cane sugar) half off regular price! And if you still haven't worked out your holiday plans yet they are doing a Thanksgiving dinner this year that I'm sure will be epic. I would call and reserve a spot for that soon if you are interested. You do have the option to come here only for the salad bar which is stocked with high quality goodies, but let's be real. This place is for carnivores! If you don't walk out of here anxious to get to the privacy of your car so you can unbutton the top of your pants to breath then you didn't do it right. Start by going to the salad bar because they truly do have some good stuff but keep it light! Then when you are ready the server will bring you a clean plate and you will flip your card from red to green to indicate it's business time (aka, you are ready for meat *giggle*). Oh my word. Before you know it you will be swarmed by gauchos holding racks of goodness and they will inform you what each item is. Take the tongs provided after telling them how you like your meat cooked and grab the meat they will slice just for you. Everything is delectable but what I couldn't get enough of was the leg of lamb (they have chops too) and the Picanha which is their signature Brazilan steak that tastes a bit like prime rib with a salty exterior. The gauchos here not only serve the meat but they are the ones who cook it as well. New to their menu also are a few different fish choices like Sea Bass and shrimp. The dinner comes with a few endless sides served family style which are mashed potatoes, fried polenta dusted in Parmesan cheese, a chimichurri sauce for the meat, caramelized bananas, and most importantly little cheesy bread rolls that are made with crack because they are addictive! I doubt you will ever ask for a refill because the servers are so prompt they will do so before you can even notice. If by a miracle you have room for dessert, they are certainly not an afterthought here. They have 14 different choices and my favorite is the creme brûlée. The parking isn't bad here as well. I believe after 6 some of the street meters are free, but you also have the option to valet for $10 which is what I did. Don't miss out if you have the chance to dine here! Fogo de Chao is expensive, and its a chain. But whomever designs the menu and the salad bar is a mad genius! I've been to other gaucho restaurants and they are never done as well as Fogo. Everything at Fogo is actually very classy, from the nice bottles of Pana water that is served with the food, to the white table clothes and extremely polite wait staff, but the food is where they shine. The Brazilian cheese biscuits are the best I've ever had, all of the sides are delicious and taste freshly made. The mashed potatoes never taste old or like they are made from a powdered dehydrated potato. Actually the salad bar is more than enough food for anyone, the hearts of palm and olives and smoked salmon could be a great meal alone. I could just eat off the buffet and never need to have anything from the actual menu. The meat which is the key to every gaucho restaurant is cooking around the main room on large sticks you can hear and smell it cooking. You get a coaster that you can turn over to signal the waiter to start bringing you food. They will bring by every dish and offer you some as long as your coaster is on the correct side. The cuts of beef and lamb and sausages are amazing. All you can eat fillet minion might seem like over kill, but its a thing of a pure joy. When the waiter gets to your table with the meat fresh on the spit he begins slicing you off pieces of whatever he has the portions are so generous that on more than one occasion I have had to tell them to stop. There is a special cut of beef here that is only available in Brazilian restaurants its called Picanha and it may be the single best thing ever! Think beef bacon. All in all the food is mind blowing good especially if you love meat, I also found the selection of South American wines more than adequate. I had a nice bottle of Malbec with my meal and it totally brought the experience together. I know Fogo is expensive buts its one of those situations where you get what you pay for.
