My girl friend and I absolutely LOVE this place. We started going here during the summer and average at least one to two visits a month. I didn't like sushi very much in the past, but since I've been coming here, I'm hooked! That's not to say that the sushi only satisfies amateur eaters. My girl friend is a sushi buff and she hasn't been back to her favorite sushi house since we came across this gem. The sushi chefs are really nice and know us pretty well by now. The sushi is always fresh and VERY tasty. Some of our favorites include, but aren't limited to... 007 Roll, Shrimp Tempura, spicy salmon, and Alaska Roll. I had one of their dinner plates once, instead of sushi and it was about average as far as taste. The portion size was huge. I consider myself a big eater, and I could only finished about half of it. If you live in or near Burke and enjoy sushi, you have to give this place a try... It's AWESOME! read more

I'm giving Fortune House a very friendly 3 stars. They didn't necessarily "lose" any stars for anything in particular, it was more that they just didn't do anything to really set themselves apart all that much from any decent sushi place. Just a few points of clarification... regarding a previous reviewer... The owner is Chinese. The food is Japanese. The owner worked in Tokyo previously. "Wahhh 'Fortune House' sounds like a Chinese restaurant!" Why, because it has the word "fortune" in it? Find something legitimate to complain about. Like world hunger. My girlfriend (at the time) and I each got the sashimi box. It came with shrimp tempura, veggie tempura, tofu tempura, two gyoza dumplings, steamed rice, a California roll, and of course, sashimi. Three decent slices each of yellowtail, salmon, tuna, and octopus. The sashimi was fresh and tasty and nicely portioned. I didn't eat the octopus, mostly because I just find it bland and lacking of the soft and melty texture that I love in other fish. We came in for dinner pretty late (9:00p) so we were the last table of the night. They had an extra spicy tuna roll leftover from earlier when I guess they had made the wrong thing for a customer, and they were kind enough to offer to give us the spicy tuna roll in place of one of our California rolls at no additional cost. I was all too happy to accept their offer. Free upgrade! Bonus points for Fortune House! The spicy tuna was pretty good, and I'm typically a purist when it comes to raw fish (fish + wasabi + soy sauce... and nothing else). The tempura wasn't so great. Might not be their fault - I think I'm just not a huge fan of tempura. The tofu tempura was the best of the three tempuras. The gyoza was fine. We started eating sort of quickly because we felt kinda bad about coming in at 9:00p. They had turned off the neon "OPEN" sign a few minutes after we came in. However, our server was very kind. I guess she noticed our anxiety and so she came over and said, "Please, take your time. Enjoy." That reassurance was really thoughtful. Yes the restaurant was closing, but then the whole family (presumably the owner's family) came in and had dinner together in the back of the restaurant. Which was kinda cute, if butch dudes like me are allowed to use the word cute without losing any bro points (I'm at like -17!). We finished our meal and paid our bill, and on the way out the whole family, mid-meal, waived to us and said goodnight. Now THAT'S what I call a happy ending! As a sushi-lover, this has become my go-to sushi place (well, at least this is the best for its vicinity and quality). As far the food goes, it's very decent. It pretty much always hits the spot for my sushi cravings. I always get the crunchy spicy salmon roll; it's become a hit amongst all of the people I've recommended it to as well. If you're going for lunch, I do highly recommend getting the sushi lunch box. It's super filling and a great bang for your buck ($11-$12). It comes with a few fried items, tofu, a small salad with peanut vinaigrette, miso soup, 3 california roll pieces, and a roll of your choice. If I come on an empty stomach, I can only sometimes barely finish this one. So worth it! The food and ambiance would be ~4 stars, but the owners are just so kind :) I love coming here because they're always welcoming and bubbly. If you love grocery store sushi, or you just don't know what the sushi experience is all about, this is the place for you! Otherwise, you'll want to go elsewhere. Service was kind, but very slow. The waitress and sushi chefs were very nice. While we waited almost half an hour for our 4 rolls, they were making sushi for a lot of take-out orders. The sushi was bland, uninspired, and very dry. They were exactly what I can buy at the grocery store, but twice the price. The rolls all looked the same: avocado and various fish on the outside (all draped in the same manner), rice, seaweed, and then boringness on the inside, with no sauces or textures to be had. No passion in making this sushi. The one with eel on the inside at least had a tiny bit of sauce to lend the tiniest bit of flavor. But overall, the sushi was underwhelming and a huge let-down. This was so very disappointing. Until now, I've never had such an abysmal experience at a sushi restaurant. It was like going to what you believe is a decent hamburger joint, and them putting a McD's hamburger in front of you. Extremely disappointing. I've gone here a few times for take out sushi, and I love it! Everything I've tried so far is fantastic -- try the 007 or Alaska rolls. Their portions are generous, their food is fresh, the staff is friendly, and the kitschy decor is adorable. Don't let their lack of online menu discourage you from ordering -- they'll fax you a copy if you call! They are also super fast (no more than 20 minutes for take out orders) so you can always order and go mill about Wal Mart for a few minutes while you wait. read more

This review is for their service. Their food is delicious but I recommend ordering take out and throughly checking your receipt. My boyfriend and I ordered take out from here after shopping at Walmart a few times. We dinned in one time near closing and we were the only people there beside another group. Because we were budget conscious I was adding up the total cost of the meal in my head with taxes. After we finished the receipt came out almost twenty dollars over my calculations. There were many charges that didn't make sense. (Prices that were too low or too high from what I wrote down earlier) I asked the grandma who was helping us the whole time for a receipt with what we ordered next to the prices, not just prices and she looked at me crazy. We were tired and didn't want to make a scene so late and after they were so kind the first few times so we let it go and have never been back. My advice to the restaurant is to start printing out receipts with what is being charged and the prices, not just numbers on a piece of paper that state nothing. New to the Burke area, a friend recommended Burke's Fortune House for nearby Sushi. The boyfriend and I stopped by here for one of our weekly date nights and knew that we cannot judge a book by its cover. Many times, the establishment is located in a strip mall and does not look too appealing from the outside and Fortune House is exactly that. We have been back a handful of times so far. The inside is on the smaller side with very simple table wooden table tops and very little décor, if any. The food is surprisingly tasty. We have ordered almost every sushi roll on the menu and have had no complaints so far. The bento boxes are probably the best bang for your buck, for about $12-15, you get plenty so much food, California sushi rolls, big pieces of vegetable tempura, salad and soup and your selected protein. Usually service is fine. Nothing great. But the last time I came here the service was horrible. If the restaurant is not crowded, the few wait staff is able to provide decent service. However, on the weekends when the restaurant has more than 5 table tops filled, they are so frazzled and stressed. I came in during their prime dinnertime on a Friday night and only seats that were open were at the bar. No problem, I don't mind sitting at the bar, so my sister and I sat ourselves down. You could already see how rushed the staff felt. It took probably 10 minutes to even be acknowledged and another 10 minutes to them to return with our waters and take our orders. There was a stack of their menu in front of us on the sushi bar and everytime a new customer would come in, the staff abruptly reached for it without saying excuse me and even bumping me and my sister at times. At the end of my meal I did not finish my ramen (not tasty btw) and when I asked for my leftovers to be boxed up, the lady rudely dropped a plastic container in front of me instead of nicely taking it to the back to be boxed. Service was so slow and rude throughout our entire meal, it really last a terrible impression on me. They acted like a mess and did not know how to run a business correctly. Before this, I thought Fortune House was a decent Japanese restaurant nearby, but now I don't think I would ever return. I understand that most Asian establishments don't have the best service or table-side manners (and it doesn't bother me), but given the location in Burke and the majority of their customers are local Americans in the area, there isn't any excuse for this. We got it to go and even when we were about to leave she scared us... The people working in the restaurant were yelling at each other in different languages and there was so much chaos and confusion. For the food don't eat the chirashi here. The rolls were decently priced and portioned. I ordered the Rainbow Roll and the Crunchy Spicy Salmon roll. I thought it was pretty darn good but my friends chirashi was warm and the fish were not fresh at all. I'm pretty picky when it comes to Sushi. Fortune House rates as average in my book, a cut above supermarket sushi but not near excellent. The restaurant itself wasn't too clean. The tables were dirty and sticky as were the glasses. The Sushi platters were worn, the wood stickers were peeling off and the presentation didn't seem to make the sushi more appetizing. The sushi itself is decent. The spicy rolls were good as were the crunchy rolls. The eel seemed extra dry and the tempura shrimp just didn't taste right. The appetizer salad is pretty uninteresting which was just iceberg lettuce drizzled in peanut sauce. The miso soup was decent. The prices aren't bad but I've definitely had better sushi for cheaper. My first time here after a few people told me how great it was I ordered sashimi deluxe. Great variety, generous portions, fresh, and such a reasonable price. I also had hot sake and it was also very good. I was asked if there was anything that I didn't like before they started my order. Order came with miso and salad. The food is amazing, fresh salmon everyday, Tuna and taro almost always available. Lang and his wife are great hosts if you happen to drop by. I've eaten at the restaurant only on a weekday during lunch and the service was very attentive and friendly, I've also ordered carry out and was pleased with my food just the same. It's such a great deal for all the food you get with it. They are always super accommodating and willing to substitute the California roll for other rolls per request. They also will offer their suggestions and opinions on what rolls to get, which is fine with me since they are the experts. My favorites are the spicy tuna and spicy salmon.
