If only that ice cream character was still utilized then maybe

Being there now live in Texas I do tend to come back to Ventura several times a year as it's my home city. Gone other days are hi ho restaurant which had the best corn burritos by far in the 80s. So we are left with foster freeze and every time I return they get worse and worse 3.79 for two corn burritos sitting in a bed of red sauce, all soaked up, soggy lots of cheese I'll give them that but the flavor was bland. They weren't that hot. I did however get a bonus corn burrito so really it was 3 for that price . Along with a medium drink, it was about seven dollars and some change . This place needs some renovating pretty quickly paint peeling the ground looks terrible nowhere to sit. Maybe it's time for them to shut down just like Santino's did next-door. One cashier and one cook noticeable, the milkshake station side, looked really bland and outdated equipment. Windows were dirty. Just something you wouldn't expect and they're not capitalizing on their name at all. Probably my last visit at this location one star out of five..

Located in Ventura near the city college, sits the iconic Foster's Freeze. The one and only place to find fried corn burritos. Imagine a corn burrito stuffed with refried beans, rolled up and fried perfectly. Then smothered in a spicy red enchilada style sauce and blanketed with more than enough shredded cheddar cheese. Of course, you can get a soft served cone dipped I chocolate, a banana shake, or a decent burger. But the only thing you need to worry about are the corn burritos. Parking is tight and very little outdoor seating. Plan on eating in your car. Which turns out perfect because it is usually very cold and overcast in the area. Well worth the trip if you are heading up the 101 freeway. Be sure to order extra corn burritos just in case.

Melted in a few minutes and out of the box onto the car seat.

In the past I have really enjoyed coming to this location. Sadly I will never come here again. My sister got a burrito and fries. It's hard to mess that up but they did. The burrito looks like it was smashed down flat and the fries were cold. I ordered a small hot fudge sundae. I've never had one that had the fudge under the ice cream which caused to melt incredibly fast. I asked for the sundae to be fixed but their solution was to put it in a box and add more fudge. Needless to say it melted completely within a few minutes and spilled in the car. No wonder they look like they are going out of business.

Outdoors but there is a small inside area

The outdoor patio is also very nice and calming, as well as comfortably shaded (which is great on a hot day). The food is great, and I think they are especially good on sweet breakfast items. The beignets are wonderful: crispy in the outside and soft on the inside. They aren't hollow like other beignets I've had, but I actually prefer this version. It's kinda like a light cake consistency. The sauce with them is also superb. My niece got the breakfast sandwich and I was quite envious. The combo of bacon, egg, cheese and brioche is solid, and if I could do it over again I'd order that with the hash brown (to be inserted in the sandwich). I got the chili verde and it was good, but I'd say other breakfast items I've had (the pancakes, the Benedict) are more uniquely stand out good.

The waiting was no greater than 15mins both times during the busy brunch rush. Service as prompt and the staff was very attentive. This home which was converted into a restaurant provides a unique ambiance both inside and out; the outside garden dinning was pretty well shaded and a little more comfortable than the inside dinning, the inside dinning was a little warm and humid. The beignets were pretty tasty, we went with the half and half; regular beignets and the bacon and syrup beignets to start with. On the first visit I had the chili relleno omelet with potatoes which wasn't impressive and my partner had the Nouveau garden omelet and hashbrowns and also wasn't impressed. On our second visit I had the breakfast sandwich with potatoes and my partner had the Nouveau garden with potatoes. On both occasions we had the blackberry sangria which wasn't excellent. Our servers Hector and Victor did an outstanding job.

As described "jumbo sea scallops and jumbo wild king prawns" ...and a 4oz halibut fillet. Ok so the 3 scallops were raw and the 4 "jumbo king prawns" were tiny. Not sure what they were? THEY DEFINITELY WERE NOT JUMBO KING PRAWNS! Small shrimp is what they were! We asked our server Javier who was such a nice guy and attentive throughout our meal THANK YOU!! We asked if we could have the scallops cooked more and he kinda chuckled and brought over a small plate and took the remaining 2 back to the kitchen. He brought out the most delicious scallops on a skewer, in a nice little ceramic boat/dish with this amazing creamy buttery sauce! My only question is? Why? Why didn't the cooks make it this way the first time? Seriously restaurant quality is not what it used to be! I really don't want to just chalk it up to "These are the times we live in" but back in the 80's/90's when I worked in the restaurant industry this wasn't acceptable. Just saying. Boatyard? I encourage you guys to up your game! I hope the owner or management reads these reviews I've left over the years? We've had some concerning issues with past dining experiences and no one has ever connected with me about them? And yet we keep coming back! HOPEFUL that things are better! That y'all have ironed out the bugs! Doesn't seem to be the case so do I recommend this beloved local spot? ‍ Very pricey. Mediocre food. Drinks are hit and miss... Good live music most of the time..:

Walked right over to Dukes which is literally foot steps from the beach. To my surprise, not only was it pretty busy with the World Cup on every TV, but impressively, it didn't stop the service or kitchen from being super fast. Very impressive. I ordered to go this time so I could get back to parenting and enjoying the weather. Had to be quick so I could enjoy my time before it cools down and my sunburn fully sets in. I ordered the Gizmo which is basically a grilled chicken club on sourdough. It was great. Really don't have anything to add to that other than I would highly recommend it. Anyone who doesn't love a chicken, bacon and avocado sandwich might have some taste bud issues... It came with in-house made potato chips and those were also wonderful. I smashed that thing and literally went right to sleep in my chair. What a perfect beach day thanks to Dukes. To add to my food experiences and recommendations here, the time before this, I ordered the fish and chips. In my case it was the fried fish and sweet potato fries. It was so flavorful and crispy. I highly recommend eating it there or hopefully near by so it doesn't lose that fresh crunch. However, you have to get any and all fries with their Ranch. I had to get extra as I couldn't seem to get enough. Obviously every fry needed to have a disgusting amount of ranch on it. Everything I had from here so far has been incredibly tasty and I would recommend it anytime you're in the area. Can't go wrong with good food and the beach with in skipping distance from one another.

Last December, a friend came across The Cave while looking for a place to have lunch in Ventura and…read moresuggested we give it a try. I'm really glad he did because it's the kind of place I probably wouldn't have found on my own. The first thing that caught our attention was the self-serve wine dispensers lined with bottles ready to sample. We had a lot of fun walking back and forth, looking over the different selections, and deciding what to taste next. Being able to sample wines by the ounce before committing to a full glass made the whole experience feel interactive. I especially liked that I could compare different Cabernet Sauvignons side by side, which isn't something you get to do very often. After trying a few different Cabernets, Chimney Rock ended up being my favorite. The dining room added to the experience. The cave-like ceilings, warm lighting, and comfortably spaced tables made it easy to settle in, enjoy our lunch, and catch up without feeling cramped or rushed. If you enjoy trying different wines, it's easy to lose track of time here. We started with a cheese plate, which turned out to be much more generous than I expected. It came with a nice assortment of cheeses, crisp apple slices, grapes, candied walnuts, crostini, and a savory relish on the side. It was a great dish to share with our wine. My friend ordered the tuna poke tower, and we shared the cheese flatbread and sweet potato fries. I went with the Original Cave Salad with salmon, which came with a generous piece of perfectly cooked salmon over fresh greens, apples, grapes, walnuts, and blue cheese. Everything tasted fresh, and the portions were generous enough that we left completely satisfied. One thing I appreciated was that we never felt rushed. Lunch naturally turned into an afternoon of catching up, comparing notes on the different wines, and deciding which pours we wanted to try next. Before we left, we wandered through the wine shop one more time. If you discover a favorite during lunch, you can pick up a bottle before heading home, which is a nice touch. I'm really glad my friend found this place. The next time I'm in Ventura, it'll definitely be on my list again.

Had a baby shower scheduled on a Saturday and left completely disappointed. Firstly, we scheduled…read morethis event and paid a deposit well over 6 weeks ago. The day before, the owner Michele couldn't seem to find the paperwork where we discussed menu, family style, decor, budget etc. Thankfully, we went in the day before to double check everything. Not only were we met with a misogynistic retort to everything we talked about but he did not clarify any details that we later found out would be important. The day of the event, we accidentally hit a bottle of wine bringing in the decorations. Total accident! During the party, we had to constantly find our server (super nice guy but terrible service) to take drink orders, to take food orders, and to clear the table and bring to go boxes. Drinks weren't refilled. We cut and served the cake we brought. Then our bill comes and surprising to us, we were charged a room fee (which I confirmed they DID NOT have prior to booking), charged a cake fee (just for them to store it in their fridge and NEVER told there would be a fee for bringing a dessert, despite Michele asking the day before if we were bringing our own or using them for dessert), and he charged us $50 for the bottle we accidentally broke. With all these extra charges, in addition to already paying a deposit, we were way over the previously discussed budget. I never would have agreed to his idea of everyone ordering individual dishes instead of family style plus his outrageous extra fees had I know it was going to blow the budget. He had every opportunity to tell us there is a cake fee (never have I EVER had to pay a fee to bring a cake- even our server said he felt it was in poor taste to charge us for that). We refused to pay the room fee because we already put down a deposit and were never told there would be these extraneous charges! The terrible ending happened when I slipped and fell (8 months pregnant) in the front of the restaurant RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE OWNER, who stood over me as I was on the ground, and said "you must have slipped on the wine you spilled." Never offered concern, never offered to help me and never apologized. A staff member from the kitchen ran out to help me despite Michel being an arms length from me, looking down on me. Such a disgrace. My dress was dirtied from their floor and I was left with bruises on my knees the next day. No wet floor sign, clearly the floor wasn't cleaned up properly or dried. We will never patronize this restaurant again. What was meant to be a beautiful event turned into a calamity met with a chauvinist owner who lacks customer service and compassion.
