Foster Freeze is a California institution. Since they have closed locations in Santa Barbara (tears) and Carpentaria, this Ventura location is where we go for our fix. The building is an original, 60s beach modern. It's a bit rundown, but it's clean and the staff is friendly, with plenty of parking and seating. Large menu of various burger shack food items: burgers, hot dogs, tacos, (fried!) burritos, chicken, fries, rings and of course, their famous soft serve! The soft serve is the thickest and creamiest, and comes in all shapes including cones, dips, sundaes, malts, blizzards and our favorite, their shakes. I have not had a better strawberry shake anyplace, including expensive ice cream shops. The crinkle fries are always hot and crispy and the food items are what you would expect - fast food but a notch up from the major chains. I get to it and here is what I notice: 1) Parking area is full of potholes 2) They only take cash 3) Only had one flavor of ice cream...vanilla 4) They charge $5 for a basic single cone of ice cream that is 3 inch tall ( including the cone. I understand they sell other things but how tf are you gonna call yourself "foster freeze" when you only have one measly flavor of ice cream. And what kind of shady place only takes cash. Being there now live in Texas I do tend to come back to Ventura several times a year as it's my home city. Gone other days are hi ho restaurant which had the best corn burritos by far in the 80s. So we are left with foster freeze and every time I return they get worse and worse 3.79 for two corn burritos sitting in a bed of red sauce, all soaked up, soggy lots of cheese I'll give them that but the flavor was bland. They weren't that hot. I did however get a bonus corn burrito so really it was 3 for that price . Along with a medium drink, it was about seven dollars and some change . This place needs some renovating pretty quickly paint peeling the ground looks terrible nowhere to sit. Maybe it's time for them to shut down just like Santino's did next-door. One cashier and one cook noticeable, the milkshake station side, looked really bland and outdated equipment. Windows were dirty. Located in Ventura near the city college, sits the iconic Foster's Freeze. The one and only place to find fried corn burritos. Imagine a corn burrito stuffed with refried beans, rolled up and fried perfectly. Then smothered in a spicy red enchilada style sauce and blanketed with more than enough shredded cheddar cheese. Of course, you can get a soft served cone dipped I chocolate, a banana shake, or a decent burger. But the only thing you need to worry about are the corn burritos. Parking is tight and very little outdoor seating. Plan on eating in your car. Which turns out perfect because it is usually very cold and overcast in the area. I went to Foster Freeze because I was craving a peach shake which I hadn't had in 5 years. First Shocker-When I got there, it was so empty, old and dirty looking that I thought it was closed permanently. However, it was open. Second shocker-I ordered two basic cheeseburgers with fries, a small peach shake and a med. freeze for $34.89! Third shocker- Cash only. Forth shocker- My husband chose the Freeze because he had a cold and did want a milky drink. The freeze looks like an icee on the picture. When we got it, it looked like a milkshake. I asked why it didn't look like the picture and she said they have bad pictures. On the receipt it said Milkshake. Fifth shocker- The peach shake that I went there for taste nothing like the homemade flavor I remember and barely had peaches in it. It was like soft serve with a few peach pieces thrown in. Sixth Shocker- The cheeseburger was basic and bland with too much stringy lettuce in it. Seventh Shocker- I couldn't believe after all of this, that the fries were tasty hot crispy and good! In the past I have really enjoyed coming to this location. Sadly I will never come here again. My sister got a burrito and fries. It's hard to mess that up but they did. The burrito looks like it was smashed down flat and the fries were cold. I ordered a small hot fudge sundae. I've never had one that had the fudge under the ice cream which caused to melt incredibly fast. I asked for the sundae to be fixed but their solution was to put it in a box and add more fudge. Needless to say it melted completely within a few minutes and spilled in the car. No wonder they look like they are going out of business. read more

I enjoy this for ice cream. They also offer a full burger, fried fish sandwich fries etc. menu. I tend to sit outside and eat my Bice cream or sit in the car if it's cold. I love the old 1959 feel to this place. They were out of chocolate today, that is why I deducted one star. It's worth paying 50 cents for chocolate dipped even that adds 200 calories! This place is dying:( I was disappointed when they disconnected their phone. They claim its due to people showing up too late to get their orders, then complaining food was cold. I like Fosters Freeze because the chocolate malts really taste like malts , not just milk shakes. I like their hot dogs too, but there was too mustard on them last time. I'll just tell them to cut back on the mustard next time. I would have given 5 stars just for the Double Decker Burger but a few disappointing things. 1 they're still using Covid as an excuse for not being able to eat in doors. 2 the fries were dark like they were sitting in grease for a while , only ate 2 fries even though I super sized. Hello, My family has been going to fosters freeze for over 30 years in Ventura,CA. Sadly, today will be our last day going to fosters freeze. We did not go get ice cream during covid, however a couple of weeks ago we went around 8:30 pm because online it said their hours (social media and the internet) closed at 9:00. When we arrived, they were closed. They said they closed at 8:00 due to covid hours. My problem was, most business updated their covid hours. They did not, an apparently it's been 8:00 for over a year. I said to the guy "did you just listen to what you said?" And he looked at me confused. I'm like you claim it's been 8:00 for over a year, so you've been advertising the WRONG HOURS for OVER A YEAR!! They had over a year to change the online hours! When asked why it wasn't updated, he blamed headquarters. Which I thought they are individually owned? I would think that falls on the owner. Sounds to me like they're just passing the blame on horrible management. Then, fast forward to tonight 6/15. I get to fosters freeze at 7:45 pm (15 minutes before they "close". GUESS WHAT? They were already closed. Lights are out and no one is there. Some poor kid that was there rode his bike over 5 miles to get ice cream, and ended up riding back without any. I'm not wasting my time driving there to end up with no ice cream. I gave them a second chance and they disappointed me again. Headquarters really needs to contact this location. It needs serious management help. Sad to say that will be the last time I will say "yum, fosters freeze sounds good, let's go get some". 30 years my family has been a customer, and tonight it ended. I wish I could taste my last cone one more time as a goodbye. I'll be going to the new mr softee ice cream place by my house that will be opening soon. Taking my business to a better business. You have got to get the corn burritos!!! I order them with sauce on the side, and single layers. They are crunchy, delicious morsels of yum, yum, yum. Just a reminder, they are not available at all Fosters Freeze restaurants. As far as I can tell they are only available in the 805 area code (Ventura, Santa Paula for sure). They remind me of taquitos but they are rolled tighter, beans only inside and the cheese and sauce are the only traditional condiments. My niece loves their corn dog too but I think she is now a corn burrito convert..........love it!! It is a piece of Ventura history - it is old - it is a little run down (patio and building exterior need some tile work. That and a coat of paint would really do a nice job for exterior appearances.) And it is Ice Milk - not "real" Ice Cream. And I never eat the burgers, fries, etc. etc. BECAUSE...in my opinion, it is the BEST SOFT SERVE in a cone from anywhere is the USA. And I have had plenty... So, a large vanilla cone - sometimes "twist" of chocolate and vanilla - rarely a cone dipped in melted chocolate...you know, that hardens after 15 seconds to break up all over your shirt.
