Decided to come here after a day at Muir Woods a little skeptical about how good an organic plant based ice cream shop could truly be (it was conveniently on the way towards the Richmond Bridge for our way back home which is why we picked it compared to other places in San Rafael or Sausalito). The shop is pretty tiny, located next to a donut shop near the netrance of a medium sized open plan shopping center. Came in there and the worker offered us whatever samples we wanted and we immediately noticed the really interesting but unusual flavors that they had. Of the classic type flavors, we really liked the brown sugar vanilla and the breakfast cereal one. The cherry special drink and the grapfruit one also tasted quite nice. But the ones that stood out the most were the thom ka and the chaat masala ones. while the chaat masala didnt end up having that distinct tanginess you might expect, the thom ka ice cream was mind blowing. It tasted exactly like having the soup but in a cool and refreshingly creamy dessert form. My mind couldn't really process it other than the fact that it was delicious. We ended up opting to pair the thom ka and the brown sugar vanilla to have a "normal" flavor to offset the unusualness of having a thai soup ice cream. We honestly could not get enough of it - it easily was one of the best ice cream scoops we had ever had and it being a plant based ice cream was insanely impressive. Frankie & Jo's will definitely be a place we will be returning to especially as the new seasonal flavors roll out so we can see what other concoctions they might be able to try and conquer. read more

Very unclear that it was vegan or coconut based without dairy. There was no signage on outside or inside. Should say very clearly "vegan coconut ice cream." Also there was no description of the flavors, for example, they could each say "coconut based ice cream with fudge and chocolate chips and cinnamon" or whatever but there was none. I'm a vegetarian and previously vegan too so I have nothing against it, it just wasn't clear at all . All the flavors just tasted like coconut ice. read more

I cannot believe how delicious this ice cream was!! Came in on a Saturday during lunch hour. Supercookies & cream in 3 kids sizes for our boss babies. The wait was a bit longer than anticipated since it was a warm Saturday - reasonable, with just one employee. Though, she was patient (despite the kids not so much, lol). The storefront was a small space, so it was hard to see the ice cream physically even though, there was a menu. Otherwise the ice cream was perfect (yes I ate my kid's ice cream!). It had a perfect smooth ice cream texture with a soft crunch from the cookies. When a bite had a cookie, it was like a blast of flavor, but not overwhelmingly sweet. Enjoyed the bits of cookies versus chunks of cookies. Also, loved how tiny the kids sizes were - size was just right and did not easily melt. A few items were already sold out, which was a little disappointing, but totally understandable that close to closing. The ice cream was really good. It was super creamy. The matcha flavor was nice and balanced, and the cookie crumble added a good texture. The date shake was also delicious with a natural sweetness. Only downside is that it's a bit pricey, but overall still a solid spot for a treat. It's also in a plaza with a bunch of surrounding restaurants so it's a perfect dessert spot for after dinner. read more

To our surprise, this cute ice cream outpost is entirely vegan friendly and plant based..what does that mean? The ingredients used come specifically from plants ~ the ice cream base is 'gum-free coconut milk and organic, house-made oat milk or solely coconut milk'. FYI, if this is something that you've been searching for or this just isn't your jam. The flavors are so unique ~ like Cardamom Apple Pie for the Fall and California Cabin (black pepper cardamom shortbread cookie) to resemble cozying up by the fire surrounded by trees. They have a kids cup which is perfect for adults and littles alike, and since this is a grab & go, seating outside. We went with the Supercookies & Cream, Brown Sugar Vanilla, and the seasonal flavor 'Candy Bag' filled with yummy vegan peanut butter cup, coconut, and toffee candies with dry burned caramel. Very good, kiddo approved, and tummy-conscious approved. To note, popular flavors do sell out because this is a small and mighty spot, but there's a little something for everyone to enjoy. Frankie and Jo's has aways been a treat when visiting Seattle, so when I found out there was a singular new location in the Bay Area I jumped up from my couch and flapped my hands in excitement! To start, you should know they only serve vegan plant-based icecream here, so it's perfect if you have lactose intolerant friends like me! The next time I was in Marin, we swung by and got the Rhubarb and Yuzu, and Mint flavors. It's not as creamy as normal icecream, but the texture is close enough that you might not even notice it's made from oat and coconut milk. We've tried many flavors before and you can't really go wrong with any! The actual store is super small, basically only big enough to walk in and order your icecream and then get out. It's a line to get ice cream, so everyone is pretty happy, including the staff. They have traditional flavors, but also some creative flavors. Boon Boona Coffee (also a Washington based shop) is a special fall flavor, so I chose a pint of that on both visits. It's delicious! Salted Pistachio is probably my favorite flavor. I am allergic to coconut so this is not the place for me as according to the gal behind the counter ALL their products are coconut-based... would be nice if they had at least one exception, though. On a positive side my child loved the ice cream. He said the taste of coconut was strong and the texture was good just like "real" ice cream. My bf and I happned upon this place while visiting the Larkspur Farmer's Market. We weren't really prepared for dessert yet but who can turn down (plant-based) ice cream? -especially when one person is lactose-intolerant and the other is vegan? Not us!! What started out as "let's just see what they have", to a full blown taste-testing of nearly all the flavors, both of us each left with a waffle cone and one scoop of California Cabin. It was a unique coming together of flavors: vanilla, cardamom, pine (?? I know, but you gotta try it!), and cookie crumbles. We also tasted salted pistachio, chocolate, strawberry and a few others. Honestly, if I had a bottomless stomach with multiple stomachs for dessert, I would have eaten a trough of each flavor! Every single flavor we tasted was a flavor bomb of fresh ingredients that weren't overpowered by sugar. (we're looking at you, Coldstone!). I also appreciated that they had the ingredients posted on the wall so you can check for allergens without holding up the line with the million questions. The employee working that day was wonderful and super friendly. He was rocking a really funky shirt that fit the motif of the fun little shop. We absolutely love Frankie & Jo's ice cream--ever since we first tried it in Seattle, we were hooked. When the Larkspur location opened in July 2023, we were so excited and have been coming regularly ever since. But after nearly two years, it's honestly baffling how poorly this location is managed when it comes to inventory. They're always sold out of so many things--most frustratingly, the waffle cones. It doesn't matter what day of the week or time of day you come, the answer is always the same: "We sold out earlier today." This has been a consistent issue since the shop opened, and at this point, it just feels like they don't even try. And we're not even talking about seasonal flavors--it's the basics. Imagine going to a gas station and they're constantly out of gas. That's what this feels like. To top it off, the staff often seems indifferent or even dismissive when you ask about missing items. For a brand that has such a loyal following and amazing product, it's frustrating to see this kind of experience at one of their locations. Took the rare trip, IN A CAR, up to Larkspur just so I could try Frankie & Jo's. It is 100% worth the effort. Why they don't have a location in SF is beyond me, because their ice cream is out of sight. When I stopped by, they had some autumn seasonal flavours, so I got to try pumpkin and apple varieties that were perfect. They also have an excellent vegan caramel sauce called moon goo. Highly recommend adding that as a topping, and maybe getting some for takeaway. As for the space, not unlike a lot of ice cream shops, it is more kiosk style. Very small, but enough room to have a good amount of flavours to choose from. And because it's in the whole fancy outdoor shopping area, there are plenty of areas around to sit down and enjoy your scoops. As for the service, since they really can only fit one employee, it's possible you might arrive to an empty shop (ie, bathroom breaks and the like.) This use to be an ice cream spot by Three Brothers (miss them). I'm glad ice cream is back and it's vegan! It's still a to-go counter. Lots of picnic tables are outside of you choose to eat your ice cream and chill. Pints are ready to go if you're committed to a flavor. I recommend trying a few before making a decision. We were driving up 101N and decided to get some ice cream. This spot popped up with good reviews so we decided to give it a try. We had no idea it was vegan and kinda worried how the ice cream would taste given most flavors were made with coconut milk and of course, no eggs. That being said, since we detoured off the freeway, we were committed to trying it. Wife ordered the brown sugar vanilla and I got the strawberry milk. The coconut flavor was pretty strong in the brown sugar vanilla, but actually it was quite good. The strawberry milk flavor was absolutely killer - whoever made this flavor absolutely nailed it. While most of the flavors are made with coconut milk, they gentleman working in the shop said that some flavors express more forward coconut than others, so if coconut is not your jam, fear not, and just ask. They'll also let you sample flavors as well. This is a perfect example that being vegan doesn't have to mean being inferior to non-vegan counterparts. This ice cream is delicious! read more

This is the perfect place for those with a sweet tooth and dairy sensitivity! They only sell their ice creams in grocery stores in oregon and washington. So for my fellow californians I recommend you take a trip out to marin for this life changing ice cream! All of their flavors are vegan (most of them use coconut instead of dairy). Only some of their flavors use nuts so those with a nut allergy beware! The place is very small, but super cute and clean. The worker was very nice to let my mom and I sample the flavors. Note: you can only sample up to 3 flavors. I ordered the super mini scoop of california cabin and WOW. This is my new all time favorite flavor. It has a vanilla cookie dough cake thing inside. Terrible customer service experience and this is coming from a former highly loyal customer. I am saddened to report this experience and am so absolutely upset to have to write this. I have been going here fairly regularly for over a year and love supporting small businesses. Yes, their ice cream is wildly overpriced but I've always enjoyed supporting this business. Until tonight. I got a SUPERMINI ice cream and within 1 min of leaving the establishment I tripped and dropped the ice cream. Yes, this was my fault. I was as going to just throw it away and call it a wash but my partner wanted to walk the 10 feet back and ask them if perhaps they could do something seeing as I clearly hadn't even had more than one tiny bit of the ice cream. Even a tester size replacement complimentary would have made the situation better. But no, they insisted we had to PAY AGAIN for a replacement. Ok fine, maybe if I had eaten a majority of the ice cream maybe charge me. But I had one bite and not to mention especially in the summer months, we go there several times a week! I couldn't believe it. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE customer service and they clearly don't care about customer loyalty whatsoever. Never going there again and never recommending this place to anyone. Wow! The feeling of taking my lactose intolerant child to an ice cream shop and letting that choose whatever they want is just beyond words! He was so excited because usually he gets 1-2 choices, and this time he could have anything! Unfortunately the day we went they actually were sold out of a lot of options (somewhat strange for 2pm on a Friday), but for him the 6 flavors available were beyond his wildest 4 year old dreams. We also were very curious about the other menu options like the cookie sandwiches, but alas those were sold out too! Maybe once they open for a few more weeks they'll get their full menu going. Loved and had the California Cabin last Friday evening, 4/4/25. First time ever tasting Frankie & Jo's ice cream--and which to my surprise an extremely kind couple in the shop picked up my tab. ...My dog, Thank you Trip and Amy so much for treating me to a scoop! And to the founder and her business partner, and their whole creative team for making it! It's almost like this flavor was designed with me in mind because I love a n y t h I n g (Doug Fir tea for example) with the smell And taste of the sweet outdoors. And it lives up to its description: "A whimsical smoked vanilla & pine ice cream with bold, delicious black pepper cardamom shortbread cookie throughout." But most notably, while I enjoyed the ice cream's unique flavor and unmatched creaminess, what I love and support the most about this new ice cream maker that hit California, is it's the brainchild of someone, Autumn Martin, along with her business partner Kari Brunson Wright, and an entire support team--who truly care. Who care about their endeavors in this world and, by extension, their ice cream product being an intentional expression for Good. My wife and her sister were excited to try this ice -cream. In fact she travelled all the way from Dallas, Tx to try this famous ice cream. As they approached the ice cream server, they observed the worker handing a sample of the ice cream to a dog. Then she immediately put her hand in the ice-cream bin immediately without washing her hands. It was totally disgusting. I don't recommend this place due to their poor hygiene practices. read more
