I tried eating here about two months ago and our servers name was Ruth. The food was good but Ruth was phenomenal and really made us feel at home. We decided we would try it again this evening but we found out that Ruth was not here. I must say, while the food is adequate, Ruth made the experience amazing and I will only come back if she is serving me again. I would completely recommend when you come in to please ask for Ruth and you will enjoy her bubbly personality and that will make the food that much better. I purposely went there with other girls from Avery Ranch to have their half price appetizers. A lot of girls ordered a drink called Maitai which is mixed with rum, triple sec, pineapple, etc. You can definitely taste alcohol from it. It's $8 per glass. Because we ordered from dinner table, so we don't get happy hour deal for it. We ordered calamari, seafood stuffed avocado, artichoke dip, crab cakes and oysters. I don't like their calamari and artichoke. I like seafood stuffed avocado and oysters most. Other girls don't want oysters because it's raw. I love it because it's raw. A lot of seafood on entrees menu. Since it's a grilled place, I ordered mixed seafood grill. It's very delicious. In the end, I highly recommend their white chocolate mousse. It's so good. We all fought for it. The best thing from this restaurant. Red meat dish looks a little bit greasy to me. I will stick to seafood here. The most impressive thing is our waitress. We rotated seats whole night long, and our waitress remembered everyone and correctly split the bill to 16 people without verifying the dishes. Good job! They also have $20 Sunday Champagne brunch. We came for the Monday-night all you can eat crab legs, but they ran out at the Sunday brunch and the seafood delivery didn't come on Labor Day. We were very disappointed. But a good business knows how to turn a bad situation into a good one. Our waiter Chris was attentive and Austin friendly. My filet was tender and flame grilled the way I prefer, not broiled. Kids shared the pecan-encrusted tilapia and my wife ordered the crab-stuffed salmon. Bread pudding too was delicious. Portions were good. They comped our dessert for our disappointment over the crab legs. A very nice gesture. We'll be back next Monday! UPDATE So, we did come back for the all-you-can-eat crab legs. We liked the idea that there are two tiers: one lower price for a single serving (good for the kids) and an option to upgrade to all-you-can-eat. It was good, but it seemed they were visiting the table less frequently and were slowing down bringing refills on the crab. The best seafood ever! My fiancé took us out for my birthday and we couldn't be happier we came here! Ruth was our waiter and she was hands down the best waiter we've ever had! She was so sweet and even brought our soon to be one year old her pasta first so we could feed her then enjoy our plates after. I have to say it's a great deal to eat brunch here. All you can eat snow crab legs, prime ribs with other seafood (shrimp, catfish and tilapia), if you like snow crab legs, you have to come here to try it. Service is outstanding too. It was beyond disappointing. The kind of meal that made us mad because we had to pay for the food and experience that was equivalent to a 'before' episode of a Gordon Ramsey Kitchen Nightmare show. We ordered three dishes : the wedge salad (don't bother, it's a chunk of lettuce topped with a over seasoned piece of bacon and out of a plastic bottle blue cheese dressing). Fried calamari - texturally horrible and tasted frozen. And finally the scallop fish - saturated with blackened seasoning. It was slimy and nearly inedible. So good! Even my boyfriend who is hard to please liked it here. The food was so delicious. I came here especially for the crab legs since San Antonio doesn't have all you can eat crab legs (that aren't cold) and they were delicious! Those who complained about them, I can see why. We got there as soon as they opened so everything was fresh, however people left the buffet tray tops open so that reduces the temperature/freshness of the crab legs significantly. Came here on a whim on a rainy evening in TX. I enjoyed the ambiance as there was a homey feel and a wine bar on the side. The server was very attentive. Everything is great except my server never came by with my drink and it was just water. I got my food, and even then she messed it up pretty bad. I asked about an appetizer but did not order it. I frequent Freda's a few times/month. The happy hour specials at the bar are quite good. I recommend the fried shrimp and the crab cake. My dad loves the gumbo. Freda herself is charming and personable. It's a must for the hospitality industry, but she takes to it like a duck to water! The reason I'm writing this review is to praise the steak I had at the monthly wine dinner. I've had two amazing steak experiences in my life and this was one of them. One was in 2014 when I was in Italy on a tour with Trafalgar. Dinner was included for a few of our meals. The steak we enjoyed was tender and melt-in-your-mouth. Pure delight. Who'd have thought you'd get that in Italy? And I'm a Texas-born and raised! I've had my share of great steaks. The second was at the wine dinner at Freda's. This review is a review of this establishment on Mother's day (5/13/2018). I debated whether I should review this place or not and in the end, decided to add my opinion and experiences so that when people look up reviews, they can see the whole picture. RESERVATIONS: This was a multi-family (3 families) dinner celebration of Mother's day. One of the members called 3 weeks ahead for reservations and we had set a time to meet at 10:30am. Everyone showed up ON-TIME but we were told that there was a 30 minute wait. Now, we understand that Mother's day is one of the busiest days to go out to eat, but REALLY? If you can't honor reservations why take them AT ALL? This not only happened to us as we heard other groups make the same comment. In the end, we finally were seated at a table but it was 60 minutes after our reservation time. Additionally, walkup families were being seated ahead of our party. Because our party was large (12) and we asked to be seated as soon as possible, we ended up sitting on the patio. On this day, it was going to be pretty hot. This morning the air was stagnant and very humid which made sitting outside a bit uncomfortable. We asked one of the wait staff if we could get one of their outside fans to be turned toward our table. The wait staff said they would contact the management staff to see if it was possible. Through the meal, we never received acknowledgement if it was possible or not. THE FOOD EXPERIENCE: We've been to Freda's before and all of us were planning to do the buffet. The buffet had the Freda's standard buffet fare: seafood items - crab legs, shrimp, shrimp casserole, mac & cheese, eggs-to-order, prime rib, salad. The buffet was set up through the bar area which made going to the buffet somewhat of a challenge. Most likely because of the number of people, it was difficult for them to keep the food filled on the buffet. The crab legs which I know people like to go to Freda's to have, was below average. They are very popular and one member of the party was able to get crab legs while other members had to go to the buffet a second time before crab legs were available. Once we had our crab legs, it seemed that the crab legs sat in water too long or was steamed too long because the shells were rubbery. Attempting to crack open the legs were difficult. Also the meat in these legs seemed to have shriveled up as the amount of meat was very small. Overall the food on the buffet was average to below average. The wait staff was attempting to do their best to serve the people there but management staff (managing reservations and seating) need quite a bit of improvement and the cook staff needs to better coordinate for a Sunday brunch --- especially on Mother's day. What made this especially unsatisfying is the price of the buffet --- on a Mother's day. Quite a huge disappointment. Its been quite sometime since we've been to Freda's but if this experience is any indication of how things are run, it will probably be our last going to this establishment. read more

If you love coconut shrimp like Outback Steakhouse offers, you've GOTTA try Freda's Seafood Grille! Their coconut shrimp are huge and so succulent, they lean towards a lobster flavor. For dessert, I recommend their bread pudding that's topped with caramel sauce. It's divine! My best friend and I eat at Freda's at least twice/month. The service is great (especially Dylan - who has both of our recurring orders totally MEMORIZED). He is our fave waiter there and always ask for him by name so we can sit in his section. Freda's has an outdoor patio with overhead heat lamps and gorgeous Christmas lights all around their property. They have indoor dining with booths and tables, as well as a bar in a little separate area too. Outside on the patio, they have a musician/band playing a couple nights per week. Tonight (12/22), they had a PIANIST playing beautiful Christmas songs inside in the bar area. It was the best ambiance to celebrate Christmas with my best friend. I order the pasta with shrimp, crawfish, however the pasta was over cooked very close to a mushy texture and the shrimp was overcooked which caused it to be chewy. Almost like chewing a chewy bar. I asked if the spice could be reduced and they yes, but they reduced the sauce. I won't be back and not real cajun food. Crackers with the gumbo were stale and the rue in the gumbo has a flour tasted with huge chunks of bell peppers and onions. read more

King crab legs ($48) were perfectly done as well as the ribeye steak ($38). I didn't have room to eat any sides, but I did have a gumbo as my appetizer. It was quite tasty and had large shrimp in it. Great lunch menu. Broad selection of fish and salads. They don't have much on the menu for gluten-free, but were accomodating when I asked. They gave me a steak salad with no dressing and the steak was perfectly cooked and tasty. The wait staff is really friendly and the service was quick. Like the other reviews it wasn't busy and if I hadn't read that it has been open for several years I would have worried about the longevity of the place. I went there for the first time last night. I think the thing that stood out was the service. The staff was very friendly, I was greeted at the door both coming and going and Stephanie was a great waitress. She kept an eye on me but didn't hover, was friendly and professional and was quite busy with other tables but did a great job with each one. I'm traveling and I like to eat seafood when I'm traveling because my family doesn't like it. I had the Jambalaya. It was excellent. All of the different fish and meats were cooked to the right level of tenderness. It had a bite, but not enough that you needed a fire extinguisher or had to be an extreme eater to enjoy it. Fan of seafood with a large appetite? Freda's is your place. They are very proud of the fact that they are locally owned and in their 13th year, and proud they should be. The atmosphere was very nice and the staff was very friendly and professional. We overheard another waiter respond to a water order with "frozen or on the rocks, with or without salt". It very fairly priced. ($4 for a cup of gumbo). It is a bit hard to find but it is located near 360 and 183 on the south side of 183 on Pecan Park. The lunch menu was a bit narrow with tilapia, catfish and salmon the only fish on the menu. The dinner menu is much broader and also fairly priced. Our waiter told us that Sunday Brunch ($26 I think) is very popular. We'll probably try it. We both started with a cup of gumbo. It was very flavorful and very rich. We had to quite without finishing. I order the Half and Half which is a crawfish dish which is half etouffee and half fried. It was good and very rich. I saved most of the etouffee for later. My wife had the Salmon Florentine. Again very large portion. The salmon was properly prepared and again, a large serving. She was not that pleased with the spinach Florentine as she didn't feel it added much to the dish. Definitely a keeper. read more

Visited Austin for the dayand ended up here aftwr seeing the reviews. Since i wanted great seafood and my boyfriend wanted a steak this was the perfect choice. Id give his place a 4.5 less .5 for not cooking the steak medium as requested. A little tidbit: we arrived for dinner at q0:30 and tbey close at 11...so it qould be expected that something my be missing. We shared an appetizer of calimari that was retty damb good. Sunday Brunch review. So, now the crab legs are served cold. They will heat your first plate for free, but every other plate after that is $5. Absurd! They really do their best to deter you from eating too much crab... I will not be returning here for cold crab legs that aren't properly cooked, or to eat Talapia.
