Parking was difficult and the place is small. I was a little nervous about the cleanliness, however, no more than any greasy spoon. Also, the number of locals put me at ease. I am glad I stayed. We had just got done doing a pre-dawn shoot of the Golden Gate Bridge at Fort Baker and we were looking for a place to eat nearby. A quick search led me to this place. We arrived a few mins before it opened and the first thing I noticed that we weren't the only ones already waiting for the restaurant to open. I really liked the attentive service and it was backed up by amazing food! I ordered The Swedish, which was a butter toasted wheat bread with grass fed beef patty, fried eggs, cheese and caramelized onion. It was delicious and very filling. If you sit inside, the tables are fairly large and if you are a small party, it's communal seating so you might have to sit with another party which isn't a problem because it seemed like everyone inside was friendly. I am with mnypny b. on this. Reasons: 40 minute wait for our food, AFTER ordering. We waited 20 minutes just sitting at our table before someone came by and the place wasn't packed. People who came in much later, were eating and almost done! They said it was because my boyfriends corned beef hash takes longer. I would have accepted that reason, BUT it came to the table cold, and tasted like out of a can. The eggs on top only warmed it up slightly :S My scramble was ok, but the hash browns were cold, along with my english muffin with coagulated "butter" on top. Bf's hash browns were also cold and hardly browned. How hard is that to do right? Three people took our drink order, but after 30 minutes, reminded someone about it. It wasn't even that busy. Dirty dish rags were used to wipe down tables before the next party was seated. Dazed and confused wait staff would bring other peoples orders to our table, then walk away dumbfounded. No eye contact with staff so you could never flag anyone down. And last but not least..... if one took a look behind the counter at the floor, overflowing garbage can, and the filth, I am sure they would not give this place such glowing reviews. The "cook" would just crack eggs and throw them behind him, landing on shelves that held bread, and most landed on the floor. The work counter was also filthy. I know, if a Health Inspector came in to do a random inspection, there would have been some code violations. There is no excuse for this. I have worked in the food industry. I also know a lot of busy restaurants that have their acts together, and have a clean environment in the process. This one doesn't. We will not be back. Too bad. It was only a 10 minute walk from home :( read more

Moved to Sausalito 2 years ago now, and Fred's is my favorite breakfast place in Sausalito. The food is amazing, and I eat here once a month! There is communal seating, which has never been a problem for me before. If you don't like it, you can sit at the bar or get a seat outside. You HAVE to try the deep-fried french toast -- I order it every time I'm at Fred's! The open-faced salmon sandwich is YUMMMMMY as well. Fresh squeezed orange juice, yes please! Now, as for the service.. it can be lacking sometimes, but if I worked in a breakfast place that was always packed, I might not be the friendliest waitstaff either, and I'm a patient person! 5 stars for the food, 3 stars for the service.. but the staff won't ever stop me from eating here!! read more

Although Fred's had promising reviews, both my boyfriend and I were really disappointed with our meals. I had the Captain Mike's Scramble and he had the Swedish Breakfast. The scramble was interesting in that it was more like a round omelette with nothing in it and a few avocados on top. I figured as a scramble it'd be scrambled eggs mixed with avocados, at the least. There was zero flavor to the eggs and even the salsa that came on the side was seriously lacking in flavor. His was absolutely terrible, to be completely honest. It was a bland slab of ground beef grilled and on top of rye bread with grilled onions and fried eggs. The quality of the hamburger meat was really bad and even more surprising was how bland it was. There were no spices or seasoning whatsoever; not even salt and pepper (or at least that's definitely how it tasted). He managed to take two more bites and then called it. We didn't make a stink about the food; we just figured it was unfortunately bad but the quality of service was good so we were going to leave it. However, when we got the bill and it was $50 after tax, I was shook. The food ended up being incredibly overpriced given the quality and I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

This is the Best breakfast I've had in years. First and most importantly, the sweet bacon is a must. It's very thick, sweet and a little spicy (cayenne). Two pieces are like 8 pieces of normal bacon, but we weren't able to stop eating until it was all gone. This is the Best bacon I've ever had. We were there on a Thursday morning, so it was pretty empty, but I can imagine that the place gets crowded on weekends. We got poached eggs which were good but not great and a deep fried French toast with fruits. I have to say that the deep fried part sounded so scary that I would never order it if it wouldn't be for all the amazing Yelp reviews. It was very very good, super soft on the inside and very crunchy on the outside and the fruits were fresh and sweet. Ahh, Fred's. Yes, I'm a regular. Regular enough that I have a special named after me. It's the Coyote Special, a cheese omelete & home fries, all covered with Fred's yummy bean chili. On the side is Vietnamese sriracha hot chile sauce, to add a kick to those who like that sort of thing. (I do.) It's a big dish, so order it hungry. Having a dish named after you does make you a little biased, but I became a regular because I love the food and ambiance at Fred's. As others have mentioned, folks share tables at this small restaurant. You might find yourself sitting next to anyone... a film producer, an anchored-out sailor from brasil, or the mayor. The Stamtisch ('regulars table') is always filled, often with opinionated old salts. Fred's is a greasy spoon, and it does that very well. As everyone has mentioned, the french toast are deep fried. (And both the pancakes and french toast have vanilla ice cream in the batter.) Yes, you should try them. Once you've gotten past the french toast (and the Coyote Special), then here are some dishes to try: . One of the 'Swedish' (see mini-essay below) . The eggs & ribs. This dish, introduced with the new owner Jian, consists of eggs and korean BBQ ribs. The ribs are marinated and incredibly delicious. Think of this as a korean-flavored steak & eggs. . Chile - I like chile, and while Freds' isn't great, it's darned good. . Blue cheese burger - Yummy, comes on a sourdough roll, and has bacon. Make sure to ask for it medium-rare. Okay, about the Swedish. There are four 'swedish' dishes on the menu, and I expect no one orders them because they don't know what they are. Legend is that they were created by Fred to tease The Lighthouse down the road, which is Danish-owned and serves danish dishes. The four dishes are: . The Swedish . The Italian Swedish . The Ham Swedish . The Italian Ham Swedish Sheesh! So here is what these are. The Swedish is two toast laid on the plate, topped with a hamburger patty and egg. The Italian Swedish covers this with sauteed chopped veggies (sweet peppers, onions, tomatoes & mushrooms.) The 'Ham' versions of these dishes replace the hamburger patty with a grilled slice of ham. I like these, and often order the Italian Ham Swedish, though occasionally I'll order the Italian Swedish. Avoid the oatmeal. It's boring and flavorless. If you want oatmeal, go to Poggio downtown. read more

All I have to say is "WOW!" The food is just like grandma's house, and by that I mean AWESOME! The corn-beef hash and scrambled eggs were perfectly prepared! (And I'm fussy!) The coffee was not your typical diner crap, instead it was a very high-quality roast with great body and amazing taste. I was there with my fiancée in our bike clothes & the staff offered us coffee to-go and as cyclists even offered to refill our water bottles. Fred's is a bit out of the tourist walking distance from downtown, so the crowd is mostly locals who seem to be regulars. We originally went to Lighthouse where there were empty spaces, but a huge line! After a rude encounter with the manager we Yelp!ed for a better brunch spot and found Fred's. The 10 minute walk from Lighthouse was totally worth it! The staff was friendly and got us seated right away. The atmosphere at Fred's is both friendlier and more comfortable with table sharing that helps reduce wait time as well as outdoor seating. Take my advice and walk the extra distance!
