Celebrating life and new beginnings with some old friends who were passing through town, the four of us came to Frenchish for dinner. We began our food adventure with some sparkling wine because this is obviously a French-inspired restaurant. Our server was very friendly and super-helpful with the menu; he managed to keep things moving along at a very non-rushed pace - obviously respecting the fact that the four of us were very involved in our conversation. First up, we ordered some deviled eggs for the table. A simple dish, but the way they're done here the dish is a complete delight! We then moved on to a rabbit terrine (which was simply incredible!) and a Kale salad, which was beautifully complimented with peaches. For our mains, we shared the pork loin, as well as the filet with frites. Both dishes were beautifully presented and completely delishish; the latter was also served with a great cheese plate. By the end of the meal, we were all completely stuffed, but we managed to share one dessert, which was an amazing end to an incredible dining experience. Beyond the amazing food, the lovely ambiance and the impeccable service, it was delightful to not feel rushed in any way whatsoever. What a pleasant surprise and new find. I have been coming to ABQ and can't believe I hadn't found this place before now. A local friend suggested it and yum!! The burger totally rocked, well balanced and flavored with some rocking home made pickles. The French fries where fresh cut and on point. And I can't forget to mention the homemade ketchup that was AMAZING!! They sent us some Mac and cheese that we didn't order. Well I am glad they did because that Mac and cheese rivals some of the best I've ever had. The wine list is limited and could use some more options. We did find a decent bottle but wish they offered more options. A very cool and hip part of town I want to come back to. read more

My husband and I chose Frenchish to celebrate an anniversary and so happy we did. We started with the devilish eggs, nicely spiced with jalapeño. The Caesar salad was generous enough to share, had a nice amount of anchovy in the dressing, rich, full of flavor with lots of crunchy bread crumbs throughout the romaine. His steak and frites were perfect-the steak melt-in-your-mouth tender, the sauce bold, the fries crisp on the outside. I had the black cod-a delicate fish with the texture of a cloud. The chef let the subtle flavor shine through, pairing it with caramelized squash, sweet and crunchy and hearty black lentils. Genius. Dessert? A sticky toffee date pudding. Luscious. And a French press full of coffee while my husband finished his pinot Grigio. What would I change? Hmmm. Not much. Because I faced my husband he had the fun of people watching whereas I had his handsome face and a wide expanse of wall. I would add a long mirror or a series of mirrors so that those of us facing the wall could enjoy the activity of the restaurant as well as our partners' faces. I would add a mocktail or several to the drink menu-they're festive and fun and why not? And maybe broil the top of the very English sticky toffee pudding to make it a bit frenchish, n'est ce pas? I had wanted to try Frenchish, so when my coworker invited me for dinner I was thrilled. That euphoria turned south when my French onion burger was rare, bleeding rare. She tried the salad but there were wilted bits that could have just been left under a heat lamp we suppose. It tainted my overall opinion to have to wait for replacement of things. We were visiting the area after living in Albuquerque for 6 years and what a treat to find such a well rated restaurant. We came with another couple which had not been here either. Entrance to the restaurant is nicely decorated with pretty chairs and a bar area. The menu was easy to read and offered some unique foodie options. We started with sparkling rose because we were in a French inspired restaurant. Our server Nick was super helpful with the menu and patient with us as we were also catching up with friends.. We began the dining experience with deviled eggs and I know it sounds simple but boy were they delectable! And we also had the rabbit terrine (beyond amazing) and Kale salad with peaches. Three of us ordered the specialty burger plus soup and frites and my husband had the pork loin. Burgers were packed with flavors and the frites were served with a special sauce which indeed set it apart from ordinary ketchup. The pork loin was perfectly cooked, full of flavor and the sauce served with it set it apart from any other pork dish. The wine menu had many options from pricey if you choose or to the price point that most of us enjoys where you can actually enjoy a bottle or two without dipping into savings! While the menu is always changing whatever they decide to cook is always great. I have been here twice and had great food. Sometimes I can't see from the menu what is going to be great about a dish, but it becomes obvious when you taste it. I will take a great food restaurant like this any day over a lesser place with an expansive menu. You only eat one meal at a time! Frenchish is likely a three star restaurant on the average night, and a two star experience tonight. TL;DR: A collection of follies defined this experience - any of which alone wouldn't have necessarily resulted in a review. Greeted at the door, the host asked if I'd prefer a table or the bar - after choosing table, the host informed me that I'd need to sit at the bar (Open tables remained open for the duration of my stay) - the impression was that my solo experience didn't merit a table. I selected a priced-bread option, expecting a high French standard for freshly prepared bread products. The bread arrived cold in the center and hot on the outside. So much so, that I concluded it was once frozen - though possibly refrigerated. A perplexing affair for an ordered service. (The bread was comped, and replaced automatically when staff was informed of the condition.) I ordered a ribeye steak, which was cooked properly, seasoned well and under rested. The steak was garnished with a grilled cucumber that was spiced, but unseasoned - this resulted in an distracting contrast when alternating between steak and garnish - diminishing the experience. Overall, the dish would have been three stars without the garnish - two stars for the lack of care. Sitting at the bar, I was able to watch the different dishes as they were plated and sent into the dinning room. This allowed me to watch a server wipe down the service station counter, and then (almost in the same motion) wipe the edges of a guest's plate for service - a plate which was then served. I had a few hours to kill while waiting for someone in Nob Hill, so I figured I'd try (At 7 on a Friday) to get into Frenchish. I was offered the bar or the kitchen counter and chose to watch the kitchen. Good choice. These folks move, and they obviously know their stuff. The room is airy and a bit noisy in a good way, with a constant energy and buzz. The menu is clean and clear and the wine list is well-chosen. I had a split of French pinot noir that was worth the cost, but I wish it came with a glass that matched its quality. The Target special stemless was not up to my Chassagne-montrachet. A Riedel O would have made me feel better at a small cost. But that is a small quibble. On to the food! The special salad was a frisee salad with lardons, pretzel croutons, salt-cured egg yolk and mustard vinaigrette. The impression when I took a bite of all four elements was harmony. Everything worked together to create an incredible taste. The richness of the lardons contrasted with the austerity of the frisee and the salt present in the accompaniments married it all together with the tang of the dressing. A wonderful start! The soft shell crabs are that rarest of offerings- a special that is also a real bargain. At $12 for one and 7 for the second one, they are a compelling choice. Served with a bit of slaw and a remoulade, they only lacked a side. I chose the fries. They were fresh cut and arrived hot and perfectly seasoned. The crabs were beautifully cooked with a light crust outside but still moist and flavorful. And of course it wouldn't be my review without dessert! Baked Alaska with some pomegranate notes and French press coffee from a local roaster. The Baked Alaska was very tasty with the richness set off by the fruit sauce, but I thought the meringue was a tiny bit grainy on the tongue. It was beautifully presented and delicious. As was everything. So, my quibbles were the kind of thing an ice skating judge would deduct a tenth of a point for, and since Yelp won't let me give 4.8 stars, it's 5 for Frenchish. The entire experience was excellent. We called for reservations for 6 people and they made it work -we thought it was a long shot but they came through! Dinner was delicious. My only critique was that I wanted ice in my water -both waiters did the best they could! Got the "squealer" burger (no bun) for dinner and it didn't disappoint. We had to send our food back 4 times because it was prepared wrong or cold. I should have sent mine back a fifth time as it was overdone, dry, and cold. There were three servers and one didn't know what the others did. In the end they told us that it was our fault for asking for things the way we wanted. We demanded one entree free. Jennifer and Nelle, I love you. This place is great. I was so disappointed with the shut down of JJ 101, but I'm so happy to be eating at this fine establishment. Food and service are A++ The bathrooms are A++. I have to speak about the bathrooms. It's a bit chilly on a winter night with the single pane, but beautiful, glass window. There are tampons, a lint roller, and local products for hand washing. The facilities are impeccably clean and the sticker on the sink urging everyone to wash their hands, is a perfect touch. My only recommendation, please, PLEASE!! is to stock a few more local beers. Just a tad more selection would be appreciated. I don't love wine and the sparkling rosé is good, but often times I want a great local craft beer. read more

I enjoyed a nice bff dinner on a quiet weeknight. Our service was great. Unobtrusive, but there whenever we needed. Our server guided us through menu decisions and clarifications (carrot dog?) They are located at Central and Carlisle. I suggest parking in the lot at Scalos across the street or behind there and walking down until the construction is finished. I did drive past the restaurant twice as the signage was lost in the chaos of ART development. This is a temporary issue, but plan a few extra minutes for parking and walking. The menu is small and changes. I decided on soup and a salad. I'd like to come back with my husband and try the steak, though. The mushroom soup was so creamy and delicious. I also ordered the brie salad. Also delicious. They have happy hour wine specials as well. The restaurant has a nice modern atmosphere. It wasn't crowded on a weeknight, but I can see how you would want to make reservations on the weekend nights. Very nice. read more

I would describe this place as simple, elegant cuisine with focus on quality ingredients. We were impressed and will be back. The pork was exquisite; best I have had! I also got the macaroni and cheese, and it was creamy and flavorful with the added bacon and bread crumbs. We had the Caesar salad as well, which I loved. It was creatively presented with charred lettuce. The only thing we ordered which I wasn't a fan of were the deviled eggs. They had NM flair (green Chile) and were much too spicy for me. For dessert we tried the creme du pot which was chocolate heaven. Our server was very busy but tried to check in when he could. The service was pretty fast. We forgot to get a reservation (which I recommend), and sat at the bar. It was fun to watch the kitchen work! I recommend trying this place for a celebratory night out. read more

Great new edition to Nob Hill. If you have a couple hours it's definitely worth the time. The food was excellent. I ordered the ribeye and Sol ordered the prix Fixe meal which was a 4 oz fillet with fries salad and dessert for $25. The service was excellent the food was perfectly cooked and it was a pretty amazing tasting meal. The only downsides was the super slow kitchen 1.5 hours from when we sat to when we ate. This restaurant may fall victim to what has killed many in Nob hill, over priced wine. $14 bucks for a glass?? Finally, serve some veggies with a steak it's Frenchish so you can add some green to the steaks. I'll definitely go back and recommend this place for a nice date spot. read more

We came here for dinner and to celebrate our 7th Anniversary. I'll recommend this restaurant for casual dining and drinks. Staff was super attentive and our server was friendly and open to give honest suggestions. I LOVE going to dine out and recognize that a suggestion is coming from the heart without diminishing the other dishes. I guess this also happens when the staff understands the quality of the food proposal. We went on a Tuesday at their opening time. I wanted to go back as soon as I had left. I started thinking of all the people I wanted to have dinner with. And I even became nostalgic thinking about all the chats at the bar I would have had with people from past times in my life. Yea, I would say I quite liked it at Frenchish. The service was eager and efficient. The atmosphere was casual but taken seriously. My husband and I both had slow cooked meat dishes that tasted divine. Happy hour wine was drinkable (thank you!) I have been wanting to go here for several months now. Today was the day and what a very pleasant surprise. I definitely would rate this a 5 Star Place. The waiter at the bar was very pleasant, patient and answered all of my five questions I had about the food and preparation on the menu. I had a drink that was a special on the menu and it was excellent. I do not remember the name, but it was on the order of the drink called aviator which contain the best Luxardo cherries. A pleasant surprise they had Deviled eggs with green chili and I also had the olives. It is also the little things like the napkins, dishes and flowers. The napkins were not ordinary in appearance and the feel told you your at a quality establishment. I found out the Chef was Jennifer James. I had heard about her from my restaurant owner friends and other professional friends and acquaintances of her excellent 5 star reputation. I was not disappointed and the experience exceeded my expectations. I will return in a week. And to add I have only tipped 50% to a restaurant in Colorado Springs and this is the second time that I have tipped 45% to a restaurant. Non-Food Allergy Review: The food was amazing!!! So tasty! The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was nice. The only downsides were that it was a little loud and hard to hear my table mates and there were no cheap wine options. But my husband was raving all night about how good the trout was!! As a normal review I really recommend this place! Food Allergy Review: To be fair I saw no place on the menu or website that mentions anything being gluten free! I have celiac disease and because of this I rarely eat out. I had family who wanted to take my husband and I to dinner and they wanted to take us to Frenchish, so I called a week before to discuss food allergies and gluten free options, etc. The woman on the phone seemed well educated in the subject so I happily came to the restaurant tonight. When it was time to order I again discussed cross contamination and celiac disease with my waiter, and he also assured me my food was going to be fine. Everyone was so confident that when my meal came I dug right in! But I have a Nima Gluten Tester and I brought it tonight and tested my beef cheek meal, unfortunately the test results came in after I was 1/3 of the way through eating. It was positive for gluten. I was with family and embarrassed and didn't want to make a scene and at that point I was already going to be sick so screw it I finished my meal. But in about a day or two I'm going to be super sick and I am quite bummed about this. I wish I had the time to have spoken with the staff about why this happened because they did seem genuinely confused. Still, in the end I am the one who is going to suffer from this and that is the worst part. So if you are part of the food allergy community and are looking for a place to eat, be cautious. Stopped in here on our last night in New Mexico, and the minimalist modern décor, and French leaning certainly provided something completely different than our previous meals at Geronimo, Sazon, and Campo. Different, but better? While the overall meal was quite good, some of the individual elements and overall experience probably left it 4th out of that group. That being said, food was relatively straightforward but tasty. Wife began with the green goddess Caesar, which could have used more of everything but the romaine. The cured foie gras I had was tasty, but was not expecting the thin slices to top yet another salad. My fault for not confirming it included some type of toast preparation. Fish special entrees were the highlights. Wife had the halibut with a pea puree which she really enjoyed, and I ordered the salmon with pork belly and a soubise, which I found excellently cooked and seasoned. Tried the chocolate burrito (ok, but I was expecting a little more flavor/technique) for dessert while my wife had the blueberry calfoutis, which she thought would be better for breakfast. All in all, simple and straightforward, but very well executed French cooking in a minimalist environment in the busy neighborhood of Nob Hill. While I could see this as a fun and frequent neighborhood spot, if I was in the area again on a brief vacation, it's probably not destination material. Probably 3.5 stars if I could. read more

Jennifer James can certainly work her magic to create a culinary delight. I'm just sorry it took me 28 years to finally make it to one of her restaurants. I ordered the prix fixe dinner. For $25, you get a salad, a 4-ounce filet of beef, french fries, and a small chocolate mousse. It was a memorable meal and the perfect amount for me. Let's start with the salad. It was prepared with a small head of butter lettuce opened to resemble a flower with a drizzle of homemade dressing (our waiter said from her grandmother's recipe). The dressing had citrus undertones that made my mouth very happy. My SO and I gobbled it down. I wanted to lick the plate but refrained. I rarely eat beef, but when I do, I like it medium-well and juicy. The filet was cooked to order with a nice char on the outside. The fries were flavorful and not greasy. The meal is served with a plain aioli that was creamy and lacking the cloying mayonnaise taste. It was a perfect accompaniment. Frenchish is a great example of how a restaurant can adapt to the challenges of COVID. Curbside pick-up is seamless as well as the ordering and pre-payment by phone. The carefully prepared food has been something to look forward to and a comfort during our time in social isolation. The market items are interesting and the blue cheese is excellent. Curbside menu items change frequently. Finally, the DIY meals which are sold on Saturdays have been a wonderful experience and even got my husband helping with the cooking duties! Jennifer makes the process of preparing a three course meal very easy and creates a "restaurant experience" while dining at home during these difficult times. I loved Jennifer James's last place, and I love this one. There aren't many places in abq where you get this thoughtful of a menu. Or a longer dining experience with multiple courses. There are solid classic pieces, and really fun playful items. There is also a happy hour menu, which is a plus. We had the devilish eggs, olives and cheese, and carrot dog for happy hour.
