What an amazing dinner! Full transparency, I had some apprehensions when glancing through the menu before we arrived; Carrot Dogs and Deviled Eggs? We met friends for dinner who rave about Frenchish and Jennifer James - and they were right. We shared a Carrot Dog, Deviled Eggs, and a Vietnamese Crab & Citrus salad appetizers and went on to entrees of Grilled Tuna and Bison Steak Salad. Stunning! The portions were perfect and yet somehow we had room for dessert; Chocolate Burrito and Madeleines. The service was exceptional and friendly - all questions were answered regarding the menu! I am guilty of avoiding Nob Hill restaurants due to traffic and construction but will not let that deter me in the future - we parked out front with no problems at all. Finally. Lived in Paris many years ago (18me, Marcadet-Poissionniers) and now live in Phoenix. Always on the lookup for good French food. Stopped in here for a late dinner after my usual Albuquerque Central Avenue haunt came up closed. Glad I stopped in. Went with the prix fixe - simple salad, petite filet, chocolat. How can a salad with two ingredients taste so good? The steak was New Mexico beef, prepared perfectly and with enough salt. That's my big pet peeve with French cooking, afraid to use the salt. They aren't here and you'll be glad. I'm not a chocolate expert but it seemed yummy. Wines by the glasses well chosen. Made plans to catch up with a friend, over some bites here, at 6pm on a friday evening, (we lucked out and she got there first, so she got in early enough to get a table without a wait, (or reservations.)) Aside from me being blind and missing the fact she had been seated further around the corner than the reception booth allowed seeing. And being in the strangely disconnected world of no cell service. (Turns out neither did she, even though she has Google Fi! which uses both t-mobile and sprint. And a few other people poked confusingly at their phones. Im guessing ART knocked out a nearby tower. Anyway enough with the not important stuff! We were there early enough for the happy hour (plus 1/2). We ordered 4 appetizers to split and both stuck with water. First round was a cute little cup of marinated olives & petit basque cheese. Served room temperature, and delightful, and was a good savory choice to get the mouth watering. Then pretty quickly our 2nd and 3rd items arrived, foie gras toast w/ figs & lardons, was the 2nd. It to was so delightful. the toast was just a teeny bit burnt, and that was fine because the teeny bit of char worked to give it a little bit of earthy flavor to go with the heavenly creamy foie gras and delightfully crispy lardons. This was one of a few contenders for best things i've put in my face in a good while. The 3rd dish was the, crispy pig ears w/ lavender+black pepper honey, I will be honest i had no idea what this was going to be like, i could picture it being anywhere from tough leather, to porkrinds, but it was nicely shredded and fried up more like a meat fried chowmein noodle. and the drizzle over the top was a perfect pairing, this was a nice mix of textures and flavors that meshed well with the lardons of the previous but was actually lighter and simpler pallet. And we all know pigs are tasty prepared so many ways! Our last dish sorta broke the trend, and it was the Carrot Dog, we split that, carrot was nicely tender but not mushy, and nicely browned in spots to give it a more complex smokey flavor, with a very nice roll and some tasty aioli. Could have stopped there and id have called it a nice supper, but we decided to grab both of the smallbites deserts. and split those too. baked-to-order madeleines, and carrot cake, cream cheese frosting, the madeleines were so gloriously fresh and amazing, and the carrot cake while being pretty dense to cut with a fork, was delightfully carroty and pleasant, and while it was rich it was not too bad and the airy sweet madeleines contrasted well! I wish i had done this with with a few other fancy places, the variety and almost tapas like sampling is a great way to try a lot of things, and due to happy hour(+.5) prices our bill was less before splitting than i thought it was going to be half tab. Probably fine most week nights, but we only lucked out to make it in without reservations on a friday. dumb luck! after this we did a stroll through the carnage of ART, saw several friends, enjoyed the nearly perfect wind free spring warm sunset. read more

I haven't been in ABQ long enough to visit her great restaurants but after my recent dinner it don't need to go beyond Central. The food and the staff are FIVE star. The staff is attentive without being distracting, they know it's about the food. It is about the food, they are not playing games with the decor, the menu or the presentation. For me all the dishes were distinctive for the flavor that the various ingredients brought together. We all have individual experiences with food, I love this place - give it a try and see if we have the same tastes. It's not inexpensive but then great is never cheap food. The few negatives: it's a little loud and there is no parking. Thanks to mayor's version of the Big Dig it is hard to get to - please try you'll find it's worth the frustration. read more

Some foodie friends of ours had given us a gift card to Frenchish and we could not wait to try. When I first walked in I admired the cleanliness and sleek decor. We first ordered the devilish eggs and fries with lardons and cheese. Who would have thought someone could make a deviled egg so light, creamy and divine. For dinner, I ordered the seabass, my husband the ribeye. Each was delicious, but whatever they did to that steak was perfection. It was as smooth as butter, and my husby now deems it as the best steak in ABQ (besides his own kitchen of course). The service was flawless. If you want a big city feel restaurant then this is the place but expect to spend $ It's loud, open, contemporary decor makes for a NYC vibe. The farm to table food was exhibited in the unique carrot dog. Never had a grilled carrot in a hot dog bun combined with celery slaw! Was yum! Not impressed with the devilish egg which was basically an over easy egg cut in half. The foie gras ravioli was also disappointing with only 2 little ravioli squares overcooked with salty mushrooms. One of the best and most reliable "wow that's good" places in all of the Duke City. Jennifer James can almost do no wrong. From Graze to Jennifer James 101, she never fails to cook accessible French food that is lovely and delicious. Finally visited Frenchish after being away from town for awhile. So glad I made the trip. My favorite deviled eggs were back on the menu, just a bit of heat from pickled chilies and plenty of savory egg yolk filling. And 2 bucks!? Crazy bargain. I figured the kitchen has been cranking out burgers and steak frites nonstop so I chose to order something more specialized: duck breast. I got insanely crispy skin and a potato gratin studded with cream and tender sliced turnips with the potatoes. My friend took a gamble on the vegetarian crepe dinner and won top prize: THE BEST roasted squash we've ever tasted. And that was just the side. The crepe itself was tender and stuffed with more veggies and drizzled with mustard cream. I worried that after so many years the kitchen would be resting a bit on their history, but not so. Service was perfect, led by the expert eye of Nelle Bauer. Dessert of a creme caramel was shareable sweetness. When I wrote reviews for the ABQ Journal, I loved getting a chance to wax poetic about pretty much everything Jennifer James did. Maybe it's my strange addiction to French fries (and Jennifer's are the best in town) or the ever changing menu that continually makes me explore and enjoy new cuisine but either way I can't get enough. We frequent the spot and love their happy hour. Cozy up to the bar with a glass of wine and enjoy some popcorn with her secret spice recipe. Finally tried Frenchish after walking past it so many times. Interior is dimly lit and gives off a comfortable atmosphere, although the walls in the main dining area are pretty barren. I got the eldermint sparkler, it was so refreshing and the perfect amount of sweet. I wish they made this with alcohol! We both got the veal, which was lightly crusted and served with small roasted potatoes and arugula. I loved how crisp it was, and not soggy at all (like how parmesan crusted protein can get sometimes). There was a bit of disparity between our plates though- mine had 3 halves of potatoes while his came with at least double. The plates just looked just looked strange next to each other on the table. However, I felt that the portions of the veal were generous, as the entrees left us without room for dessert. Their current menu (as of labor day weekend when we went) had a $25 3-course prix-fixe item with petit filet that I hope to try next time, if it's still available. read more

Went with friends for dinner January 13. Very clean restaurant. The food however was a failure. 1. Wedge salad ordered by others. What a joke. Shredded lettuce from Sysco (most likely) served with dressing and some bits of bacon. News for chef: that is NOT a wedge salad. Wedge salad had a wedge of lettuce. Flavor was boring. 2. Hamburger: meat was bland. No char on the patty (ordered medium came medium rare). Flavorless with a stale bun obviously not made on site. 3. French fries were not seasoned and were actually chewy instead of crisp with tender inside. 4. Biggest joke of all: asked for some extra ketchup for fries only to find at presentation of the bill they charged 50 cents!!! You gotta be kidding. NEVER have I been charged for extra ketchup. That finalized it for me. Never coming back to such an overrated restaurant with boring food and is clueless about how to make a wedge salad!! read more

I will be the first to admit that I rolled my eyes when I saw the menu. A carrot dog? For eight dollars, even. A fancy deviled egg? Burgers that are 'cooked through'? Gimme a break. But I resigned myself to the fact that I couldn't get out of it. My partner's boss wanted to take the company out for dinner and really wanted us to come, so even though I grumbled, I decided to be a good sport (and get auxiliary tacos afterward if the food sucked). We had a reservation, and I definitely think that's the way to go. They were booked pretty solid (it was a Saturday night) so if you aren't into waiting, call ahead. Looks like there's some limited seating at the bar? We gathered in the smallish reception area where we were offered drinks. First thing I noticed was the big open floor plan, open kitchen, and exposed brick. Gave it a very modern, hip, industrial vibe. It also makes it very noisy. Do note that they only do wine and beer, so if you want a cocktail, you won't find it there. Not at all a big deal to me. We were seated reasonably promptly, and really, I must say that the service was absolutely outstanding. We lacked for nothing the entire time we were there. At least 4 different people came to the table with refills, apps, new cutlery, etc. Completely non-obtrusive and very professional, too. Looks like they've done a good job getting good staff, and I hope that the staff are treated well. We ordered a few bottles of wine (one bubbly, one red), which the party enjoyed greatly. I skipped it because I'm a philistine that doesn't like wine, but their wine list looks good. The staff opened them both without a hitch, too, even the champagne. Speaking from experience, that can be a bit nerve-wracking! We started off with their house bread which came out with a small ramekin of butter with a sprinkling of crunchy salt. Quite tasty, though I'd recommend serving it with a bread knife because we got crumbs everywhere. We tried both cheeses, the camembert was very good (I didn't try the other because I'm a blue cheese hater; everyone else loved it). We also got the escargot. Their presentation is a little different; it's a pastry shell filled with escargot served with beurre blanc. The pastry was outstanding; the escargot itself and the beurre blanc were quite mild but not bad at all. For dinner, I had the ribeye and it was DELICIOUS. Perfectly medium rare, with mushrooms and Bearnaise (only a tiny dollop; I would have appreciated more). People in my party got the duck, the house salmon and the prix fixe filet + frites. Everyone was very impressed with the food. The one comment was that the duck was a bit tough but the flavor was spot on. We also got a side of their house brussels sprouts which are fried and served with a sauce that's similar to a tartar sauce. Loved those. I skipped dessert because I ate half a cow, but the desserts looked interesting and some people in the party got the chocolate burrito? It looked tasty, though I didn't sample it. I would have liked to try the house madeleines, or the creme caramel. Another nice thing to note is the bathrooms! The bathrooms were clean and private, and not only do they stock them with products from Betty's Bath & Day Spa (seriously, SUCH a nice touch), I also noticed that in the ladies room, they had tampons! Really think that's such a small and thoughtful touch that makes all the difference. I appreciate when businesses clearly care about the comfort of both employees and patrons. Prices are $$$, but we knew that. We were being treated, so I'm not inclined to view it as a negative, but it's definitely something to consider. And it seriously really was incredibly loud. I found it hard to hear the person sitting across from me. So probably not a great place for an intimate conversation. Overall, I enjoyed the experience! So despite my initial reservations and grumpiness, I enjoyed the food and was truly impressed by the service. Worth checking out, and I think they do have a nice happy hour. read more

Clean and light filled, the host quickly seated us. The waiter was attentive. The food was so-so. We got the prix fixe dinner: The salad came and the lettuce was pretty brown. The dressing was middle of the road; not good/not terrible. The petite fillet and fries came. When they say petite fillet, they are not joking. It was a little bigger than a silver dollar. However, it was prepared properly an expertly salted/seared. The fries were decent but on the cold side. The desert that came with was sort of a chocolate mousse. It was extremely tiny & unremarkable. There was a server assistant to fill the waters and things like that. Sweet young woman, but she seemed like a frightened dear. She was very hesitant to take any of the empty plates from the table and she casually tossed our steak knives (facing the wrong direction) onto the table, which is not something I would expect a finer dining restaurant. This is difficult to write. Discussions with Burqueños led me Jennifer James. She, I was told, will convince you that there is fine food here. Well, I went to her newest venue, Frenchish, and I'm not very impressed...though read my comments in detail to figure out why. I did not have dinner here. I had the happy hour specials...Nevertheless, I got a pretty good sense of what is going on and everything you serve has your name on it. I had two glasses of wine. The list, is judiciously selected. The pricing, however, makes no sense at all. You can get a bottle of Bara Champagne for a very decent $85, or about twice retail. On the other hand, you have a bottle of 2008 Lynch Bages (OK, a poser bottle) for $325, which is 3x retail. This is completely contrary to the standard by which the more expensive the bottle is, the less the markup. Similalry, you have the Cuilleron Condrieu at $96, or x2 whereas the Léoville Poyferré at $224 is marked up a whopping x4 retail . Again, the pricing makes no sense at all... I'd also like to see at least one decent bottle of burgundy on there...Pours on the single glasses are generous, which is nice. You make plenty of money on those bottles and I'm glad to see some of the happiness spread around. Now for the food. There is a strange soullessness to it. This is technically cleanest food I have eaten in Albuquerque. The kitchen is putting out plates that are crisp. But what I ate had absolutely nothing distinctive about it, either with respect to the flavors, or the ideas. It seemed, in every case, to go through the motions of originality, or even hipness, without ever really caring enough to carry through. So let's begin with the so-called devilish egg (even the name is bored). It's hard to complain when an item costs $2. Still the food cost is 10% and this is coming out of your kitchen, therefore it is supposed to be good. Even memorable. This had, from what I could tell, three ingredients. A barely hard boiled egg (technically sound). Shredded celery root. And micro-greens that for some odd reason had not taste... No seasoning, nothing to spark interest. Just a dreary dish. Substitute fresh horseradish for the celery root, use micro basil, a good dose of piment d'espelette, liberally sprinkle with fleur de sel and some nice coarse black pepper, and we would have something no more original but at least tasty. Something you actually want as an accompaniment to your apéritif. Next... The BLT toast. I love deconstructed comfort food. What it is about that particular dish that makes you swoon...Massimo Bottura's crunchy part of the lasagna...What makes a blt is the series of contrasts it accumulates. The variations on crunch/crispness between toasted american bread, bacon, tomato (one of a handful of dishes that survives a crappy winter tomatoes--though I like it with a beautiful summer heirloom better), and of course the lettuce (a rare dish that gets something from iceberg). The variations you get between the tartness of that crappy tomato and the sweetness of that oh-so-american mayo and bread. And finally, and not least, the different temperatures, between the warm bacon and toast and the cold lettuce and tomato (are you old enough to remember the Mc DLT? Sigh...I am). Well everything listed above is lost in this dish. The bread is a slice from a boule so this is a tartine, the tomatoes are roasted/stewed so no crunch, the lettuce, as some kind of dark shredded green brings nothing, and then there was so much bacon (very salty bacon) that I actually took a bunch of it off. Again, technically fine (though not exactly culinary rocket science) but completely uninteresting to eat. Just heavy and salty. I'd even say that the dish is too big. Give me something smaller and better please. No matter what, why even mention BLTs? It has nothing to do with it. And frankly, I'd rather have the original. Finally, the Julia Child inspired Caesar salad. I will admit that I didn't realize that JC had come up with a recipe without anchovies. Had I known I would not have ordered it. Love JC but why the hell eat CS without the ingredient that makes it (it's actually the dish that taught me to love anchovies!). Still, even with that ingredient missing, this was completely tasteless. I want to feel like I can't kiss anybody for three hours after eating a CS. Here, no garlic, no lemon, completely under or unseasoned, no cracked pepper that I could taste, and even the Parmesan (please grate it instead of shredding it--that is a no-no in my book) was oddly tasteless. This was, in a word, a large plate of crunchy water. Beautiful lettuce but absolutely nothing there. Oh, and I like my croutons to be made à la minute so they are a little warm, garlicky, crunchy, but a little soft on the inside. But that's just me. I debated having dinner and the Caesar salad was the coup de grâce. I had watched a few protein/starch/vegetable plates go by and figured I'd cut my losses this time. Will try again. read more

Swing and a miss...... I have respect for Jennifer James, and did really like her previous restaurant. Had been looking forward to eating here. She is one of the few chefs pushing the envelope in town. We were seated promptly, and the wine we ordered was good. We shared the Caesar salad, which was light and bright tasting, but would have really benefited from a few anchovies. Our entrees were just ok, I had the New York strip, which was accompanied by some bitter grilled radicchio. Was acceptable, but not anything I couldn't have whipped up on the grill at home. My wife hade the bouillabaisse, which was disappointing. There were basically 3 mussels and a small piece of fish, and one of the mussels had a cracked shell, therefore ill advised to eat. Service was where the night really took the hit. About half way through dinner we tried to order more wine, got the menu and the the waiter disappeared for half an hour. Didn't end up getting any wine. At this price point, even in Albuquerque, would really expect a better experience. Probably won't return. read more

The buckwheat crepe also suffered from too much squash - tho nice sweet sour balance, it needed more mustard cream the serving of which not proportionate to the crepe . The flavors of filling overwhelmed the buckwheat taste- it could have been made of any grain. Duck confit salad nice enough - generous amounts of duck . Pommes fries pretty good - if you gobble them down quickly before they cool. The only good value thing on the menuReally - you have to pay for bread? An enjoyable atmosphere, form and function with modern, clean design with open kitchen. But the limited dinner menu, only six 'plats principals' with two being glorified hamburgers, disappoints. The weekly 'menu additions' don't help much either. The 'French-inspired' food is more 'faux French'. I had the tuna nicoise which was just adequate. The haricots verts were cut up into tiny pieces, so much so you had to stab at them with a fork to get a taste and overdone with nicoise olives, cherry tomatoes, red baby potatoes etc. on top of what little salad was on the plate...no boiled egg (cured egg yoke?), no anchovies. I should have read the menu closer! My friend had the 'prix fixe' which, again, was nothing special...small leaf salad, 4% filet, fries and small dessert tasting. Nothing especially 'French-inspired' cuisine about it. At the $ prices Frenchish was asking, I was hoping for a little bit more enthusiasm and creativity. Decided to try something different and it backfired! My boyfriend ordered the special of the day called the hump day burger and I had the pork lion chop. I sampled a bite from my boyfriend's plate and there was absolutely nothing redeeming about it. Imagine a regular burger but with sloppy joe sauce. The burger didn't have much integrity and almost immediately fell apart upon cutting/handling. Meanwhile I am severely disappointed with the pork lion chop. Priced at $30 I expected something scrumptious but I wasn't even given that. I asked for medium well and to my horror after consuming almost half of it, when I cut through towards the center it was completely pink/red. I commented it to one of the waiters and he just said "okay" and nothing afterwards. We weren't offered a discount or even an apology. You'd think for one of the most expensive items on the menu it would've been better. The sides were spinach and polenta. Nothing was too great and I won't be coming back. I was excited to try French cuisine, but looks like I'll have to try elsewhere. read more

I have been a fan of Chef Jennifer James in the past, but am not in the habit of dining at restaurants in The Heights...so I was really excited to see she opened a new place in Nob Hill. The restaurant inhabits the former clothing store space Elsa Ross (now out of business), and it looks amazing. The walls are painted a beautiful French blue, the design is chic and modern and the food was amazing. I had the Devilish Egg, The Rocket Salad, Gruyere Cheese Bread, and a Root Veggie crock of vegetarian casserole heaven. I also had a nice Bordeaux wine. The service was great, the place was packed (but not too insanely so) and I really enjoyed the experience. It was a bit pricey, but that's generally the way Nob Hill fancy places run. I will be back to enjoy more of Chef JJ's brilliance and hope she'll bring back the Prix-fixe menu option for a more budget friendly experience. read more

Wanted to try this restaurant since it opened. Loved Jennifer James restaurant on Menual and this restaurant didn't skip a beat. Beautfiul menu and wine list. Quality items and very knowledagable wait staff. The deviled eggs were so tasty for a first course, our dinner filets were a little bit salty and our champagne paired well. Would return. read more

Clean, modern decor and a surprisingly gracious flow, particularly for a larger spot on Central. The atmosphere is inviting, with a clearly well trained and friendly staff. And the food, well, welcome JJ to Nob Hill. We started with the pork and chicken pate, accompanied appropriately by cornichons, grainy mustard, and grilled baguette. Rich, smooth, wrapped in bacon, it's housemade and a fantastic shared plate. For mains we couldn't resist the carrot dog, and neither should you. As weird as it seems, a poached grilled carrot kind of has the same texture as a real hot dog, and this one is topped by a creamy slaw that I could eat a bowlful on my own. I would order it again in a heartbeat. The steak tartare is also top notch, very finely diced, served appropriately chilled, incorporating mustard and the right amount of salt. Of course, you can't go to a JJ restaurant without getting the burger, and the french onion burger, cooked to a toothsome medium rare with gruyere on a brioche like bun is an excellent incarnation of the dish. Finally, we stuck to potato sides, both of which (duckfat roast potatoes with some kind of tasty seasoning and nice skinny McDonalds like french fries) are absolutely worth the order. The wine list is reasonably priced and, which not extensive, clearly thoughtfully chosen. In short, it appears that you can't go wrong with this restaurant or menu. Highly recommended. read more
