Delicious! Chelsea Market has so many options, too many to a point where you really need to weed through all the offerings and find out which is a stand out all around. Friedmans will not do you wrong! Quality food that was oh so good. I had a sandwich and I was in love with this place. Of course I eat enough to feed a small village, so definitely get some sides if you're a big eater like me. The fries and brussel sprouts are clear winners here. I'll definitely eat here again. I love Friedman's: it's a little overpriced, but generally delicious. I work across the street from this location and often recommend it to people for a close by, unpretentious breakfast. They have recently remodeled and it's a much more open feel into Chelsea Market. My only complaint, and I say this praying that someone from management reads, is that I LOVE their breakfast grain bowl so much and you can't order it after breakfast closes at 11am. It is so tasty and I would order it every day for lunch if they would let me (but they won't make exceptions.) read more

I guess I just ordered the wrong dish but I would like to believe if it is truly a great restaurant, everything on the menu has to stand out. Unfortunately, the brown rice bowl did not. You could say I am spoiled when it comes to inexpensive Asian food. The rice bowl is $11 and to add any sort of protein, you have to pay a significant extra. I paid $3 for grilled tofu. The bowl came with some edamame, spring sprouts, carrots, and mushroom. It seems quite healthy and the sauteed vegetable isn't bad. It is just bad I cannot justify a bowl of brown rice and sauteed vegetable costs me $11. It is also kind of bland I had to steal Lobster Place's Hot Sauce to make my food from next door a little more appealing. I guess I should have tried their fried chicken or sandwiches. read more

I like their sweet potato fries and their fried chicken. They really know how to make a good fried chicken. I would guess that they dip the chicken in buttermilk prior to frying. The chicken tastes like it was fried in herbs- with rosemary, thyme and maybe some sage. They also season with pepper and kosher salt. (A lot of places don't). Well done with the fried chicken. I could make the same quality of chicken myself (and I have) but then I would have a couple quarts of frying oil leftover and the smell of fried chicken for weeks. I like fried chicken but certainly not that much. What else if fun about Friedman's Lunch is their cozy tables that seat four and the communal table. I also like that their water is served from a large green wine bottle. Good times with great friends here. And it doesn't hurt the highline is nearby. read more

Friedman's is just one more awesome reason why "I heart brunch." I was very, very tempted to order the chicken and waffles - but I don't really eat things fried so instead ordered the Southern Breakfast. OMG - although the chicken and waffles that walked by looked oh so good - my taste buds were so happy with my order. It's actually a relatively simple plate - two eggs any style, a biscuit, fried green tomatoes (yes, I know, I don't eat fried foods), and cheddar grits. The cheddar grits stole the stage and I have difficulty not craving them all the time! The best thing about Friedman's is the quality of everything that came to our table. We stopped by here on a Sunday around 4pm to grab a quick bite to eat. The Chelsea market is pretty crowded on the weekends, so we were happy to stop by somewhere we could sit down and eat. We were seated right away and the service was decent. I ordered the Friedman's club and I must say it was one of the tastiest club sandwiches I've had in a while and it was very big! I don't normally review restaurants, but I am so annoyed by the expensive yet paltry sandwich I just got at this once excellent spot, which has now apparently become a genuine tourist trap. I used to go regularly when I belonged to the nearby Equinox and the other day I decided to go down and get their wonderful BLAT to go. Surprise: $16! And they didn't even have napkins. If you want to charge upscale prices, the least you could do is send someone out to one of the many stores in the area to purchase some napkins, for god's sake. Or work something out with one of the many neighboring vendors. There used to be a nice ambience, but they have removed the doors - the better to pull in the unsuspecting tourists - and the cacophony resulting from the combination of passing traffic noise and the restaurant's not so great sound system was irritating. The service was surly. I saw that my sandwich was ready and had to ask a server to track down the cashier to hand it to me. I got home with my sandwich and found it so thin that I actually combined the filling of both sides to make a full sandwich with one half of the bread. Disgraceful at that price. "Sucky southern stuff sucks" It's truly memorable to have food and service this bad in New York. Got up very late in the day after a long night of festivities in the West Village. Decided not to go out but peruse the available brunch delivery options. Instead of knocking on the door of reliably amazing, ie Oscar's Place, I decided to try something new. Wanted something to ease me into the day a bit. Missssaaaatttttaaakkkkkkeeeee. Ordered the Southern Breakfast with fried green tomatoes. Biscuit was dry and flavorless. Scrabbled eggs overcooked and the fried green tomatoes were mostly overly breaded with no scent of tomato. The grits were like baby food and overly cheesy. My gf ordered the salmon salad that was generically ok. What's good - The prices aren't embarrassingly high for the West Village. What sucks - Everything - Food was delivered almost upside down; Coffee had spilled inside its closed bag so much that only a quarter of the coffee remained in the cup * Forgot one coffee order and any spoons or sugar. * Coffee was supposed to be an Americano but tasted like instant I will be actively telling everyone I know not to have anything to do with this place. read more

One of worst experiences I had. We placed an order at 10:31 through the website, was given a 11:16 arrival. By 12pm, no food. I called. Giselle who answered said that food had been sitting there, but my ordered was voided. When I responded not by me, she said no, this happens a lot & she will call the company, 10 mins go by, no call back. So I called her and was told she can't get in touch with anyone either, but she would try to get someone to deliver my order. At this point I have no confidence in this woman so I asked for a manager, she said he was too busy. Looove this place as a solid brunch option if I'm in the area, plus I always love walking through Chelsea Market. So far they make my favorite chicken and waffles dish - the chicken is fried to perfection so that it's moist on the inside and extra crispy on the outside (super satisfying to bite into) and then they place it on top of a cheddar waffle with honey tabasco. UM YAS. Best chicken and waffles if you prefer savory over sweet. The Nova Benny is also amazing if you love eggs benedict and lox. It's a dish with two poached eggs covered in hollandaise and stacked on top of a generous piece of smoked salmon, which is then placed over a potato pancake. Also comes with a small side salad. SO GOOD. Since this is a major tourist hotspot, either make a reservation in advance or be prepared to wait an hour or so. read more

N graciously accompanied me here when we were on a diet change assignment (gluten-free for me, diabetes / carb control for him). We were too tempted by the Nova Benny and its potato pancake to actually try the gluten-free bread, but overall, Friedman's Lunch makes being gluten-free brunch pretty bearable. It's a pity that there are very, very few gluten-free brunch places out there. In addition to the Nova Benny, we shared the cheddar grits and fried green tomatoes. We definitely underestimated how much food would come out, and we ended up not finishing a lot of our food. :( The fresh salmon was deeply satisfying, the poached eggs were perfect, and the potato pancakes complemented everything perfectly. Who needs toast when you can have a potato pancake? (That said, I am a self-proclaimed potato lover). The fried green tomatoes were comparable to those I've had in the South, despite being gluten-free. I don't think I liked the sauce very much, so I didn't use it. The cheddar grits were fantastic, especially because I'd been craving grits for a while and N had never had them. Spot-on - creamy, cheesy, and piping hot, the cheddar grits put our brunch over the top. Waiting wasn't an issue either; we simply wandered Chelsea Market for the 15 minutes that we were supposed to wait, and looked at all of the food art. The décor was soothing and the ambiance was a little more mature than young adult, but I felt comfortable. Service was good. Overall, it was an excellent brunch experience; we wandered over to L'arte del gelato afterwards and then to the Highline. It's an excellent place to start the day. read more

After some yoga in the park, I was completely starving! I went with my friend to look for some good eats in Chelsea Market. We ran across Friedman's and one look at the menu was all it took to get me in. We ordered the Cobb Salad and the Market Plate (3 sides) with Asparagus, Sweet Potato Fries and Quinoa. As Rachel Ray would say (sorry to offend the Anthony Bourdain fans who abhor R.R.), "DELISH!" The Cobb salad was overall very tasty although the turkey was a bit dry and the bacon a bit overcooked. The Asparagus was grilled to perfection with just a perfect touch of char, served with fresh parmesan and a tangy lemon dressing, the Quinoa was hearty and fresh, and I can't sing any more praises for the Sweet Potato Fries which had a hint of ginger to it. The decor was cozy and down-to-earth. The service was good. They didn't rush us although we were the last guests there and they were ready to close out. Three stars for overall. Minus one star for the dried turkey and overcooked bacon. But add one star for the Asparagus and one star for the decor and ambience. read more

The other day it was raining like crazy, so we decided to go shopping in the closest "mall" that we know of in Manhattan. The Chelsea Market is a cool place, but on the weekends it's busting at the seems with foreign tourists. So, if you don't enjoy your personal space & you love having people shove you without even acknowledging your existence, it's perfect for you. But if you're hungry, theres tons of different eateries to try. On this day, I was super excited to try Friedman's because they can do gluten free substitutions. We got to the restaurant at 2:40pm on Sunday and they told us they'd be switching to the lunch menu. But they didn't tell us this in a nice way, it was way more bitchy. I understand that they're tired of dealing with the constant tourists, but they chose their location, they should be nice. They suggested we get takeout if we wanted to have brunch. So we did. I got the chicken and cheese waffles (gluten-free). They were very good, but extremely greasy. My friend got the cheese grits & potato pancake. The reason I gave them 3 stars was the attitude of the cashier and the greasiness of the food. read more

I love this place. It's just so casual and chill. Tonight I tried the watermelon salad with arugula, olives, feta, almond slivers, and watermelon with a balsamic reduction. It was refreshing and delicious, the perfect thing to eat in the summer. I also tried the lamb burger and the reuben sandwich. The lamb burger was so juicy, it was falling apart, but in a good way. It came with herb fries and a chunky tomato ketchup sauce that tasted homemade and fresh. The reuben was really good. If you are into reuben sandwiches, you'll love the version they have here. It comes with thick, juicy, not too salty slices of pastrami, with cheese and sauerkraut. But the best part is the bread that they put it on, it's thin, but buttery and crunchy. It was a really good compliment to the sandwich. This is not a sandwich for the faint of heart, and you probably will have some pastrami left over. Highly recommend this place. It's just a great place for a chill lunch or dinner. read more

If your looking for the worst eating experience in New York this is your place. I got a grilled cheese sandwich which I think was made with some left over crust. Or maybe just the worst bread choice possible. I had lots of time to look at it, because after I'd eaten all the bits with cheese I still had half my bread left. I also had sweet potato fries. Which clearly were microwaved. Limp and soggy. They also got my drink order wrong. My partner had a tuna melt made with a different bread than the menu said, one which she was specifically trying to avoid. And there was zero melt. And vinegar fries which were microwaved and had no vinegar. She didn't get a drink because when she requested to look at a drink menu they said ok and never brought it. Add to that it was super expensive, and the staff was rude and didn't care. And the busboy was wiping sweat off with a rag then swinging it around like he was at a big football match. Came here for dinner about an hour and a half before closing. I ordered the lamb burger with sweet potato fries which I did enjoy. I shared a mac and cheese with my party and wow, this mac and cheese had zero flavor...nothing. I tried hubby's chicken and waffles which were tasty. But the syrup...the syrup was spicy. I don't know if that's a thing people are into but spicy syrup is a no no in my book. It just ruins the entire point of chicken and waffles. It wasn't syrup with a hint of heat, it was almost hot sauce syrup. Overall I thought the food was ok but the service was really great. I arrived too late for a late lunch/early dinner at 202, so I wandered into Friedman's. Very tasty matzoh ball soup with sliced carrots, parsley and some noodles served in a cute bowl. I also had the nicoise salad. Very good, but a bit pricey. Service was very friendly and accommodating, especially as I was getting in 20 minutes before closing. Friedman's Lunch is one of my favorite gluten free spots! Most of their menu items can be prepared gluten free - even sandwiches and their chicken and waffles! The chicken baconswisswich on a gluten free roll is definitely my go to. The gluten free chicken and waffles were pretty good, but I think a lot of that is just because it is such a treat for me to have chicken and waffles! Otherwise, they're a bit spicy and dry - not sure I would order them again. They have a decent happy hour - their website says that it is 4-6, but I'm pretty sure it runs until 7 or 8 which is wonderful for an after work drink and snacks (I recommend the spinach artichoke dip gluten free). I have mostly been on weeknights and not had too much of a late, but it is a bit of a snug spot and I have heard that the wait can be a bit crazy on the weekends (blame the tourists). read more

I love NYC sandwiches!!! The pictures are a thousand words. Bread is fresh & gluten-free. Meat is stacked one to two inches high. Soups and salads are huge. Enough for a full meal. Fantastic taste! This Friedman's has great people watching too if you sit at the communal table in the front.avoid between noon and 2 pm to avoid the long lines. I love this place. Our server Jak W was great and very accommodating despite our chaotic family of four. I think the best thing you can say about a largely gluten free restaurant is that I think a lot of people eat there totally oblivious to the fact that the place is largely gluten free and like it anyway. For me, the quality of the gluten free food eg the fried chicken and the pancakes was top-notch. Definitely will come back to this Friedman's and their other locations often. Keep it up! read more

We stumbled upon Friedman's lunch which happened to have a great happy hour drink menu. I had a glass of the white wine $7 my girlfriend had mint tea $4. I came here for lunch with a friend and ordered the tomato soup and turkey burger. I was eating my burger when i found something "plastic" in my sandwich. It was unchewable and hard. I tried to rip it with my hands to see what it was. i only had one bite of my burger before i sent it back. when i told my server she didn't apologize and just told me it was an onion. Even if it was, it was obviously a foreign object that was hard and inedible, i shouldn't be gaslight and dismissed. No apology and was only given $2 off my bill. i had asked to remove it from the bill since i didn't even eat it and I was freaked out by the plastic. Friends and I decided to stop here before drinks at the Tippler. One of them wanted fries and the other an wanted grilled cheese. This place had both so why not? Lots of things on the menu looked really good, but I ended up opting for the special of the night which was a Cajun chicken burger with Cajun spiced chicken breast, avocado, bacon, spicy mayo, pepper jack cheese. The burger was the size of my face. They put three (thin) slices of chicken breast in it. I would have preferred one thicker slice because it would have been easier to eat (my burger was falling apart left and right) and the thin slices can easily be overcooked, which is what happened. The chicken breast was a bit tougher to chew than I would have liked. Instead of avocado it was guacamole. Not bad, but would have preferred avocado because it would have paired better with the taste of the rest of the burger. The rest of the burger was amazing. Thick slices of bacon and the spiciness had just the right amount of kick. My burger also came with a side of fries. I got sweet potatoe fries. They were kind of soggy and over fried. There were one or two fries that was burnt. No good at all. Overall though I felt were satisfied from the burger and the service was great. The noise level not too loud either. read more

After we were seated, we waited about 15 minutes before someone came to our table. Others were seated after us and we're taken care of before us. I am a pretty patient person but was actually considering leaving when we were finally greeted. Our food and drink order was taken simultaneously. Nothing fancy. An OJ and a soda. Our drinks came out after our food. In the meantime, my water glass sitting on the table had someone else's lip print remaining from a subpar washing! See attached pic. This place was exemplary. We were torn with all of the food options in the Chelsea market, but this little cafe takes the cake. We came on a Tuesday morning for brunch and dined in. Despite of it being a little busy, they were very on top of things and the food was out quickly. French Toast, B.E.L.T, and Nova Benny. Service was great, menu was detail oriented and staff was very on top of things. Every dish was delicious and even better than we expected. There are so many options at Chelsea Market and I will eventually get to all of them but today, lunch was at Friedman's Lunch. They are pretty strict about not bringing in outside food which is annoying considering the lack of seating at Chelsea's Market but if you are quick you can snag a good table somewhere along the hallway, outside of Friedman's Lunch. One really positive thing about this place is that a lot of their options are also available w/ gluten free versions which delighted my gluten free co worker! They deliver 10 blocks up and down and 2 avenues over. They also take credit card. My co worker had the burger with a gluten free bun with rosemary fries. I had the Southwest Turkey burger. Came in to Chelsea Market looking for a late breakfast on a Sunday morning. Not knowing what I would come across, this place looked good. I honestly didn't know the name of the establishment until looking at my receipt a few days later. I was seated quickly, shoe-horned in at a large communal table. At first I was apprehensive about the seating but it was actually nice. My order was taken quickly. I ordered the BELT which is a "BLT" with fried "E"ggs in the sandwich. When my order came out the BELT looked amazing and came with a side green salad on the plate. The sandwich was large and I wondered how I might finish it, but I did. :) As for the communal table environment, my order was a conversation started with the people next to me and we wound up talking for about 20 minutes.
