The Friendly Bean is a small coffee shop located off Barry Road near North Oak Trafficway. The location for the shop can be difficult to get in and out of depending on what direction you need to go - you cannot make a left turn to get back onto Barry road on the way out. The coffee selection is very good and they live up to their name with very friendly staff. I stop in here regularly to get a good cup of coffee. The location is perfect for me to grab a cup in the drive-thru on my way out. read more

I was reluctant to try this place at first because I can be a bit of a coffee snob. After looking at some reviews on Yelp, I asked my friend friend who swears by them to pick me up an iced caramel macchiato one day and I was shocked by how good it was. It was comparable and dare I say...BETTER than Starbucks. It made Starbucks look like gas station coffee. Although, this caramel macchiato is much sweeter than I was expecting. I have to add extra shots, but who doesn't like extra espresso???? Also, the employees here are always really nice and they have a punch card that gives you a free drink after 10 drink purchases. I'm all about supporting local and when going out for morning coffee, this will be new spot for sure. read more

I had always thought that this place was drive-thru only because of it's tiny structure. After seeing people walk in while driving by, I stopped in. The place is small but has a small area with chairs and couch surrounding a coffee table and a couple of tables and a couple of barstool seats. It seemed slightly cliquish since there was several regulars there enjoying conversation, but I guess that's what I would want if I was a regular too. Well to start, I don't mind studying here. They have a decent desk area though slightly cramped. The space is small so on some days it's difficult to get a spot. They also have patio seating. Thus far, I have tried their pumpkin spice latte and vanilla cinnamon latte per recommendations. The cinnamon latte was great! It wasn't too sweet and had the perfect hint of cinnamon. The added bonus: almond milk! Most recently, I got the vanilla chai latte, and that was too sweet (even for me!), so I would suggest getting it iced instead. Do I like Friendly Bean? Yes. Do I love it? I'm afraid not. The Crows and Benetti's of the world has spoiled me! I'll be back here if I'm in the area and need a quick fix. Indeed, they are friendly! read more

This is my all time favorite place to get Cappuccino!! For the last 7 years at least. I drink decaf. And it's very hard to find a decaf coffee/espresso that has any flavor. I don't know what Friendly Bean does, but it is the best. I have visited coffee shops all over Kansas City, Neighboring cities, other states, and I cannot find a match to what friendly Bean has to offer. I like to try new coffee shops, but I'm always disappointed because their decaf is watery and does not have flavor. Friendly Bean is THE exception! read more

I do not live in this area of the city, but I did take a class at Maple Woods one semester and this place was the only coffee shop I could find that was not a corporate chain, and so I visited here every morning before class (three times a week) - sometimes after class too. Service was extremely friendly. I love seeing the owners working in a shop, and their kids - they definitely know how to run a good business. They were always very generous with my refills and punch card and helpful when I wanted a pastry or a drink other than coffee. I haven't visited here in long time because I don't live around there and the class is over with, but I would definitely recommend this place to any coffee lover who prefers locally owned businesses over chains. read more

I'm a former Louisville resident. Louisville is the coffee mecca of the Eastern United States. When I moved to North KC I was struggling to find a coffee shop to relax in and get a good cup of the black stuff. While the Friendly Bean isn't my favorite coffee shop in Kansas City, it is a solid option in the Northland considering there isn't another sit-in coffee shop in the area. The plain black coffee, my drink of choice, isn't bad. A step above Starbucks to be sure. Combine with with one of their pastries and a comfy seat in the cafe and you have a great relaxing scene to crack open a good book or answer some emails. The employees have always been friendly to me, quick to answer questions and make suggestions of their own favorite drinks on the menu. It can be an odd place with some odd employees and strange regulars, but hey, thats what makes a local business what it is right? Over all, this is an alright coffee shop that deserves your business over chains or gas stations. One because it is just flat out better coffee. And two, its a local business that is striving to serve their local customers well. So ditch Starbuck and QT for coffee and his up the Friendly Bean! read more

The coffee is good but this has to be the DIRTIEST coffee shop I've been in. I came on a Saturday afternoon with only one table occupied. All the other tables had crumbs, straw wrappers, etc. on them. It's not a very big place to begin with so it was easy to stand in one spot and get a view of every corner. Ceiling tiles has large brown spots from obvious water leaks. There were literal cobwebs on the hanging light fixtures and the shelf the stereo speaker was on. I was waiting for my drink and peered behind the counter into the "kitchen" and the floors were noticeably dirty. I don't care how good the coffee is, a dirty restaurant is a total turn off. The department of health really needs to swing by here one day. read more

It's not just the beans that are friendly - the people are too. The Northland is woefully lacking in several areas, locally owned coffee shops are one of those (it is getting better, there are two relatively new shops in or near Liberty.). Coffee shops must be one of those businesses that are easy to open if you have enough money to get started. Unfortunately for the would-be entrepreneurs though, running one seems to be a lot harder than it looks. Occasionally someone gets it right, and the proof is a shop that stands the test of time. Friendly Bean Coffee is one of those. Friendly Bean is most of what I look for in a coffee shop, it's cozy, quiet, the people are friendly (again), and the coffee is really, really good. Local coffee joints are so much better than Star$$! The Friendly Bean definitely makes that statement true! After moving in close to the bean, I popped in one morning to try the place out. It's a little hard to find at first but once you find it, you'll be glad you did. I was able to get a large drip coffee and DELICIOUS homemade muffin for about $3.50! Plus, as others have noted, you will be equipped with a frequent flyer card which rewards you with free joe after you grab 10. The staff is SUPER friendly, service is fast, the environment is cozy and provides free wifi, and would be a great place to study, meet friends, etc.! Every single coffee and smoothie I've had here has been consistently great. They make them all to order, and if you get there early enough you can grab a pastry or cookie, which are definitely worth it! Another plus is that they can make almost any drink without coffee, using milk instead for those non-caffeine drinkers out there. Or for my picky younger sister. Both iced and warm coffees are great, and it's hard not to go back every day to try something new. One last point: try the smoothies. This little jewel offers some of the best coffee in Kansas City and truly lives up to its name. Sam always remembers our names when we come in, but all the baristas are truly friendly and always make awesome espresso drinks as well as Chai and Matcha. This is the best coffee shop in the entire northland area. They started serving a different food/bakery item each day of the week and all of those items are so good! This shop is affordable, too. The line can get long, but you're usually out of it within 10-15 minutes even when it's super busy. They have tons of sugar free syrups (that are so good) so people can actually try different combinations. They have unusual flavors like rose, cardamom, violet, etc. Just go and ask for a surprise, it's gonna be good! read more
