This is one of the last few remaining mom and pop hamburger joints in the area. The concept is fun and entertaining as a train delivers your food. The restaurant itself is older and could use a good scrubbing but is still a fun experience for kids and adults. The food is really good as well. Love the burgers and tater tots. Breakfast is served but is a little greasy for my taste. This place is as old school as they come. Everyone should eat here at least once. There is another location in Crown Center but I'm reviewing the original location in KCKS. The location in Crown Center is more upscale. read more

The last time I had visited Fritz's; Ronald Reagan was president, and it looks like nothing has changed. The train still drops off your food at the table and the burgers are just as greasy and delicious. My Twin Gen Dare burger was topped with grilled onions, cheese, pickles, mustard, ketchup and a hash brown patty for $4.69. Not so value priced was the $3.69 order of Frings - the worlds smallest serving of fries with 2 small onion rings. C'mon man! Basic diner/grill menu with a serving gimmick. The concept is great! The food however is not! the burger I had was disappointing to say the least. plain on top with couple chunks of onion and a squirt of bbq sauce. Get past the looks, the taste is worse. Super fatty and the bun is just as disappointing. Tater tots over cooked, asked for cheese to be melted on the taters tots. Fun for kids and any age diner. I, alas, ordered takeout at the counter of this small, railroad-themed place and just had my order handed to me. My friend and I, both in our late 20's, visited here and had a blast! I know there is a newer, nice one in Crown Center but I really wanted to go to the original location. You place your order over the phone and it comes directly to your table via little train. There are even fun conductor hats to wear. Great for all ages!! Now, you come here for the fun NOT the food. The menu is mostly just greasy burgers and fries. Good burgers and fries, but there's nothing fancy going on here! But that's what I loved about it. Sure it looks pretty run down outside and in, it's old, but it's awesome! For our meal, we had fried mushrooms, french fries and burgers with hash browns. We were in the food court and couldn't figure out where to eat. There was a huge line at Fritz's and we decided to drink the kool-aid. We joined in and were eventually seated in this railroad themed restaurant. At Fritz's we had to use a phone to place our order. Calling in, we had some difficulty, but they finally understood us. Pretty soon a waitress came by with our drinks. After some time a train on the ceiling drove by and dropped their cargo at our table. Seriously, a train speeds by and at the top of your table, a flag arm comes out to yank the cargo off of the train. The food then slowly descends to your table on this small elevator contraption. The food wasn't great, but you are there for the train concept. Everyone was enjoying themselves watching the trains go by and hoping it would be for them. read more

The food's fine enough I suppose, sort of standard fare with a gimmick delivery, but I can tell you from my eyes' and ears' experience that the owner of this restaurant is an incredibly cheap individual. For one thing, staff are treated like disposable wipes; I saw one young lady reduced to tears after being yelled at by a manager for some mistake or other, and another young man outside on his break telling someone over his cell phone that he wasn't sure if the tips would allow him to make rent this month. Additionally, I could generously call the building "clean-ish", and the cleanliness of the phones you order with and the tables you eat off of is just enough to remind you that your immune system exists for a reason. We're hip-deep in good food around Kansas City; we don't need a restaurant that serves mediocre food while disrespecting both its staff and its facilities. I'd pass, folks. read more

This was our first time trying Fritz's at Crown Center and it will probably be the one and only time we go there. I was so excited to surprise my grandson for his birthday and bring him here because of all the trains. That was the only thing good about our experience. We received our fries/onion rings first.... they were cold! Then about 7 minutes later we finally received our sandwiches..... burgers very dry, very thin and room temperature at best, chicken nuggets tasted rubbery and cold and the chicken sandwich had absolutely no taste but SALT!! None of the wait staff seemed liked they even wanted to be there. I used to go to this place with my mom as a little girl and the only memory I have is of the choo-choo train riding across the top of your table and delivering the food. The taste of it was totally missing from my memory...now I know why. I ordered a original hamburger with frings. The frings which is a mix of fries and onion rings was lukewarm warm and bland. The hamburger had no condiments on the bun, the hamburger meat was so thin, that 2 patties didn't even come close to a McDonalds burger and it was also under seasoned. It had no pickles, no lettuce or tomato, just grilled onions and I only counted 2 thinly sliced pieces of that anyway. I guess the lesson I learned are two things. 1, visions die with the original visionary and 2, trains and glitz are the only thing needed to distract a child from seeing the truth behind sub par food. read more

I would beg to go here as a kid. The shakes made me happy for days. In high school, this was a popular after school hangout. I probably won't come back here again. There are too many burger joints to eat substandard fare. I've eaten here before and loved the home-cooked, true-burger flavor and the texture of the burger. I want to start with how bummed I was that the train doesn't run during breakfast hours but, the food was as good as you'd expect from a decent breakfast joint. I had the chicken fried steak and it cost $8.19, add on a coffee and total bill was about $11. Food was good. Fun local spot and most of the breakfast items are even less than $7. The main thing is that it has a train theme, kids get a free hat, and that a mechanized train on a track above the tables delivers the food. Went here with coworkers for lunch. The experience is fun when you can get a table with the phone and that has the train drop off your food to your table. It was busy for lunch so we weren't able to get one of those spots. Four of us got burgers and one got a chicken sandwich. I went with the Gen Den Twin and added bacon. This burger comes with classic toppings, but adds hash browns. I hadn't seen that before and it was a cool combo flavor wise. Was glad I added bacon so I got some salt and bit more flavor. Their patties are VERY thin. I like a thin burger once in awhile. The food itself wasn't anything super special. Decent meal, and the price is beyond reasonable. I also got a butterscotch shake. It was good, but the syrup they used for flavoring was mostly at the bottom of the cup and I didn't finish it because I was full. We had decent service. Decent meal. Overall 3/5. read more

If you are looking for a good old fashioned burger then this is the place. Very simple delicious burgers that are perfectly cooked and doesn't have too much stuff on them. I prefer my burgers simple (cheese, bacon, pickles and mustard, maybe even onions) and I can enjoy one here at Fritz's. The burgers are on the smaller side to be honest I would like for them to be a bit larger. They have a very convenient drive through whenever you are on-the-go! It definitely takes longer then a typical fast food chain but it is definitely worth the wait. The sit in service is always fun. You order your food through and old telephone service and the food comes to you through a little train hence the name of the restaurant. Overall it is a solid place to get a good burger PERIOD! P.S. I ate at the Crown Center location tonight with my daughter's school group (six teens and six adults). We are in KC for a competition and have enjoyed exploring downtown. We loved the atmosphere and the food was great! I do have one complaint. My son is a huge train fanatic and I wanted to bring a Fritz's shirt back to Texas for him. After I paid my bill for my food, the man at the register asked "Anything else?" I asked him if they had any of the train shirts in a certain size and before I'd even finished my sentence, he cut me off, saying "Oh no, I have to get this line down first" and indicated the people behind me in line. First of all, I was a PAYING CUSTOMER who had just eaten there. When I told him that, he repeated "No, I have to get this line down". Second, two of the people behind me were in MY group, and the last group of people were all paying one check. When I told him that he had just lost a sale, he said "oh well, I'm sorry". This man was very unprofessional and rude and I can't believe he refused to let me purchase a shirt at the same time I was paying for my food just because there were people waiting to pay behind me. One of my friends with me offered to go back and buy my son the shirt, but I refused. I did not want to give that restaurant one more dime of my money. I did not get his name, but he was an older gentleman with gray hair. I would almost expect rude behavior like that from a teenager, but a grown adult?? OK...so the food here isn't the greatest - who cares when you can have a little train bring it to you????? Sure, this place is gimmicky but who doesn't love a bit of family fun? We took my brother here a few days ago and I'm pretty sure we were the only group without a small child in our party. On a prior visit my two year old granddaughter seemed to enjoy watching the little train make its rounds to our table, but I have a feeling her daddy was more fascinated. I can't wait to bring her back now that she's a bit older; plus she now has a little sister who needs to be introduced to the fun of a train delivering burgers. Really fun place for the kids! You can't expect gourmet burgers, but my sandwich was tasty and they have a burger with hash browns on it, that's sorta fun. But the real attraction here is the train that delivers your food. It delighted the adults and children alike. Very, very fun. Very friendly staff as well. This is your typical very decent diner, with a decided twist: delivery by train. If you have kids, I would think this place is a must-see. You place your order by phone, and when your food is ready, it is placed on a tray, suspended beneath a scale-model train, whose tracks circle the dining room. When the train reaches its station (your table), the tray is released onto a small hydraulic platform, which then lowers the food to the table. It's better in person, than reading it on the page. Go!
